Yesterday on my road trip, I was using the GPS. Had it on for like one hour, and towards at end when I went to turn it off, I noticed that it was really hot on the back , especially towards the button area. Also the screen was really hot. Is this normal? By the way, I don't know how to check CPU temp, but I got a program and it showed the battery temp at 40c/104f.

I'm interested in this topic, so ran a test on my Vibrant.
Went into Google Nav and set a route. Let the phone sit on a table for 1 hour. Screen stayed on the whole time. The charge dropped from 98% to 80%, and the battery temp ended up at 31C (87.8F).
Two factors may have made the results somewhat better than yours. First it was in my air-conditioned house the whole time, rather than on the dash of my car under the sun through the windshield. Also, the screen brightness was set to lowest, rather than max as it likely would be in the car.
Once I get my Sensation replacement I can run a similar test on it.
What did you use for the temp?
My phone gets very hot when using the GPS. This is on my 45 minute commute to/from work. It is almost too hot to hold.
Sorry to troll but I was outside today and my evo shift heated up to 139 degrees and I was only running my music player. No ill effects from the intense temp either... Shocked the hell outta me to see it get so hot though. My solution was to put shifty on an air conditioning vent, after 20 mins, back down to 90 degrees...

I used app Android System Info for battery temp.

Heat that high will shorten battery life.

Comparative and helpful 'trolling' is welcome!
I mentioned his in the Q&A forums but I average about a minute per battery % when using the GPS. At night in an air conditioned car my phone gets up to 39C with the GPS running. Yesterday I tried using it on the golf course like I have every other android phone I've ever own with Skydroid and the temp got up to 52C.
i'm getting another unit sent by t-mobile CS in a few days. i'm gonna extensively test it to see how it responds, i'll report back
Same thing occurred to my phone. I honestly have no idea if this is normal behavior as 3/4 phones had this heating issue either on the charger or off.
I am using my phone on GPS and my battery is getting very hot also. Just browsing the web is what I'm doing but should this happen when I'm not under direct sunlight or the phone on my car dashboard. Anyone else experiencing this and have a solution?
Newest version of Google Maps (ver 5.7) claims to have an update that improves battery power management during navigation.
Be aware that the Android Market app does not detect there's a new version. If you look at your apps Google Maps does not show a pending update, but if you select it the Update button shows up and it does the update.
Other good feature is the ability to download map segments for offline use in a 10 mi radius from any location.

Mine, after about 25 mins of use - gaming and surfing on the net - reaches 44 degrees celcius and bottom of the phone gets really hot.
This happens in normal use not while charging.
Is this normal?
What temps do you get?
Also I am experiencing signal drops for the gsm network, but I do not think this is related to heat issue.

Doesn't get that hot for me with hours of use gaming, surfing, playing music, etc. But yesterday when streaming music via 4G, charging in the car in the sunlight (N1 dock power cord), without the ac on on a 90 degree Fahrenheit day the thing was easily 100 degrees F. Hope it's just an issue with the charging cable and heat of the day combining.
mine has reached 113 degrees F just from playing peggle for around 20 mins...
Around 87F on average usage unplugged...
got to 110 degrees playing Cut the Rope
Mine reached 50°C while charging and an active app that kept the screen on. Outside felt cooking hot when I picked it up.
Mine got to 113 deg after only 10 min of playing fast five...really worries me as this is my second unit, first one was perfect built, no batt issue bt the power button was crooked than a MOFO lol..if this continues i mite return this one too, bt then I worry about getting another unit that has another issue...its like u can't win with this things

My wife's got hot enough today to shut down while she was using it.
I'll be playing with it tonight for a while and see if it was a one time deal, mine doesn't have that problem at all.

your new phone doesnt have the crooked power button? i thought everybody had that
Had a file transfer going while playing some games - ended up at around 50c with the bottom of the phone extremely hot.
When i stopped things and tried a reboot - phone went into a reboot loop - so went to pull out battery to hard reboot. With cover off -- very hot - not just battery but area with SD card / SIM is too hot to hold.
It would definitely burn my fingers if I tried to hold there.
Dammit, mine is also getting pretty hot. I wasn't even playing games on it when I noticed how hot it was getting. I was showing my family a few pictures on it, and in 5 minutes the lower part of the phone became really hot. Never had that happen with any other phone before. Hmm...

haha i thought the same too until someone posted a pic of their "normal" one and i was like hell nah, im returning mine for a diff one, which now has a perfectly level power button...problem is though that first one had no problems and the batt never got hot. this second one's issue is the batt gets really hot after a few minutes of usage in which the phone gets uncomfortable to even handle.
Yesterday my G2X was really hot it was over 110 because of the weather... So how hot is too hot and what to do to protect the phone when you have to be in sun? Any advice?

Here is what LG says:
Humm... Max Storage temp is about 122F, so I'd be careful about leaving it in a hot car during the summer, especially in direct sunlight. The Operating Temp is about 113F ...
There is Thermal protection built into the phone so if the heat gets excesive, it should shut off, But personally I wouldn't push it to that extreme. I use a little app called "Battery Indicator Pro" that makes it easy to see what the reported temperature of the phone is.
If the phone is uncomfortable to hold, then it's too warm... Remember, Heat is NOT a friend to Electronics of any type.
If your phone is getting too hat to hold, I'd contact T-Mobile or LG Support about getting it repaired / replaced. LG can be reached at (800) 793-8896.
I noticed mine was warm (about 40c) when using my data and just surfing. When it went up to 45c, I turned the data off immediately. I let it sit for a little bit and it went back down to the 20s.
It was the first time it got that warm so I'll chalk it up to the weather.

101 in KS?? And I thought TN was bad.
Heya,
Last night I was playing Angry Birds in bed while plugged in a Kidigi dock. All is well. Now let me define some preconditions first.
The phone does get hot while:
1. Charging
2. Screen is on for a long time
3. Heavy CPU load
4. That goddamn hot weather isn't helping either
Right?
Put above conditions together. Temperature is 48.3C. I never thought I'd need to use a cooling fan on a phone, honestly. I did that to an overheating AMD desktop some time ago...
The thing is I knew there was something going on not by feeling the hot phone (remember the dock part?) but by seeing the LED strangely cycling through all three colors. Anyway I shutdown everything running, turned off the screen and kept my fingers crossed. The flashing stopped almost immediately as it dropped one degree in an instant. Took it 15 minutes to cool down to the normal 38C.
I looked around and didn't find a definitive answer for this one, even on HTC's site where they supposedly list notification color meanings. Therefore I now define a new one, let's call it "I'm just about to blow up now, k10xbye".
Has anyone else had such a drastic overheating case with this type of notification?

I monitor my battery temperature by dialing *#*#4636#*#* which takes you into a section called testing, and then selecting battery information. This displays temperature along with other info. At one time, it actually said overheating. it has not happened again but if it does, I will seek a replacement unit. There is no way that any of this, your sceneraio or mine, is normal.
It's not normal. Heavier games with 3D don't do that. Max temp achieved was 42.

My EVO4G used to do that when I had it in the tank bag on my motorcycle listening to Pandora. The plastic cover would cause it to heat up and the led would cycle and it would stop charging and shut down.
There is a reason to this. The battery is mainly lithium. Lithium is highly reactive (read lots of very hot flames and sparks and excitement that you probably don't want going off near your girlfriend or dog or sensitive government documents). They use the same type batteries in RC aircraft, only lots bigger, and youtube will show some pretty spectacular lithium battery explosions, if you care to search them.
Imagine that going off in your pocket.
Ouch, a little....
Heh shutting down is reasonable, heating up till shutdown during normal use is not. And yes I watched those videos on YouTube when I got my wrist charger.

Recently I've read that there are some battery temperature issues by OneX int'.
It rises up to 50 even 60 degree in a short period of time when using the Navigation, 3D game...etc.
Due to safety concerns, the OneX will automatically stop the battery from charging once the B-temperature arrives 50 degree.
I think it bothers a lot especially for navigation, if there is not much left or almost empty in the battery after you arrive the destination......
Please confirm if this still happens by HTC One XL (LTE) version.
Thank you
---here are some more Information..........
1.The LED indicators will blink in red-green-red-green....to tell you the battery is too hot (50 degree).
2.Switch to telephone-call mode, and use dailpad to input *#*#4636#*#* you can check your battery temperature here (thanks xfinrodx ).
3.Take 99 photos with burst mode in one shot (turn off the 20 shots limitation in advance) and do it couple times, could cause 50+ high temperature too?!

Haven't seen mine go above 37c. I've had my screen on for a couple hours, am about 1/2 way through downloading a 400MB game and it's sitting pretty at 29c. It is laying on a cloth on my desk, plugged in to an AC charger. Maybe I'll post back with temps after playing the game for a while if you care
Where do you find the temps?

Warmest I could get it was by playing a game through almost a whole battery charge. 38.8c is as hot as it gets for me... my Atrix used to hit 45-50 just looking at the home screen with no widgets and a static wallpaper.

Since you came by via the search, I am curious about your hardware version.
Is it International version with Tegra3 quad core or LTE version with Qualcomm S4 dual core?
Over 50degC? It will surprise me if its a LTE version.....
I have to agree I can't see mine go beyond about 35c hardly even with me playing on it all day. (Rogers One X).
It's the international Tegra chipset. I'm running ARHD.
Battery Monitor Widget and System Panel Lite are what I use to check battery temps. Today I was driving to my doctor appointment and listening to music with my beats headphones and my phone got to 98 F. It felt warm but my doctor told me that it's nothing to worry about because logic boards can withstand some pretty intense heat.
I had a 90 minute phone call the other day, half of which was on speaker, and noticed the phone was feeling 'hot'. so I checked and I was at 39C, not too bad.
my one x gets over 60 degrees too easily...
got one time 64-65 degrees just by using the augment app(which uses the camera)...
60 degrees also appear when shooting photospheres
over 50 degrees always appears when using the camera...
running aosp rom(happens in sense roms/stock aswell...)
That's normal when you're using apps like that.

Hi everyone,
I'm about a week-long user of the M8 so far, and I'm loving it. I've been a fairly long time HTC user as well - I started with the Ozone, then fell back to a feature phone until I picked up the Incredible 2, which lasted for a long time.
At any rate, I'm no stranger to hot phones, literally. During my commute back and forth to work, I would use my Inc. 2 to record the drive with Dailyroads Voyager, while simultaneously monitoring road conditions with Waze. My good old Inc. 2 would power through those tasks like a boss, while at the same time burning up, and usually unable to pull enough power from the car USB charger. The only way to keep my phone stable was by running my car's defroster to blow cold air over the phone.
Now that I'm up to date hardware-wise, the M8 is no exception in the power house category. It can even keep charging while it's doing these things, although it does still get pretty warm. It's currently in a protective case which seems to dissipate the heat pretty well.
My question is, how warm do you guys let your M8 get? (Note: I'm rooted, but still running stock with no sort of overclocking involved.)
The only time I've ever had heat issues was when I mounted the phone to use as gps. And this was under direct 90 degree heat. Other than that, I've had no problems with heat whatsoever, even on prolonged lte usage and video watching.
My experience might be isolated though. I'd say, if your phone is uncomfortably hot to touch, you should probably ease up on it to be safe.

Yeah, always with the GPS navigation it seems. I wonder if this is something that can be fixed software wise (I.E filling a bug report to Waze/DRV), or if it's more on HTC's end for software/hardware...
I would assume it was just the metal body absorbing direct sunlight but I might be wrong. My HTC rezound used to double as a portable heater the way it used to get hot with extended usage. This one doesn't seem to be like that though.
Usually only heats when running tether for a period.

That's been my experience from the Inc 2, as well. So it seems like the mobile radio may generate quite a bit of heat...
I recently accidentally let my M8 get too hot while listening to music with it laying in direct sunlight face up. Didn't think about the black screen absorbing so much heat, got so hot it went into safety shut-off. It was almost too hot to touch, but after a couple minutes off it was relatively cool and turned back on fine with no problems or battery issue.
Low 40s Celsius is when I start to get uncomfortable. It's still safe, I just simply don't like it that warm. I get mad when my OC'd Intel cpu hits 60c even though 75+ is fine. I'm just anal about temps I guess

Thank you, I've been looking for a CoreTemp-like feature for my phone. I'll give this a try!
I've been hammering on my new m8 (swapping roms, installing massive amounts of apps, running tests, playing games ) for over a day and the phone has never gotten beyond lukewarm. Nothing close to what my m7 used to do
I never look at the temp. It will auto throttle if it gets too hot anyway. Just use the phone how you want and don't worry about it...
Well, I gave the temp monitoring thing a try (very cool!) and I don't think my phone ever passed 65 degrees Celsius, which I guess is ok. So no worries it seems!
