When I had the ATT stock I got the lock in seconds. After flashing and putting different ROM its like 5-10 min.
Is there a difference in the gps.conf or anything else?

The one I am on (Android Revolution 5.1.8) and GingerBeast (2.1.2) I had before this, I generally got lock in seconds, and with an accuracy of 5-10m.
I would say the GPS on sense based roms with the correct gps.conf file works just as good as the stock rom.
Right now I'm using Android Revolution 5.1.9 and I get almost instant lock (about 5 secs) and 5~7m error.
Radio and RIL also play a very large part in it as well, I have had great luck leaving the gps.conf file as is and just flashing the updated stock radio/RIL combo. Locks in seconds unless obstructed.
This also includes CM7 Nightlies after 57ish.

Running Leedroid and getting lock in seconds down to 10 foot accuracy! Best I've had in any configuration. Running latest stock radio.
Running leedroid and my GPS is rock sold. While driving @70mph I get 10/10 in less then 10 seconds. New radio and ril.

Works fine for me on cm 7. I don't turn it off and on. With gingerbread its really not necessary in aosp type roms it only activates when needed the power drain is minimal.
funny, i just flashed back to the stock rooted rom with sideloading (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042) because I've realized I had ZERO dropped calls or connection issues on the stock rom. i was using ar4g 3.7 anyways because I found it to be the most stable and quite quick. wish it had a custom kernel.
back to the point, I had issues getting GPS working on that too, even with matching ril and radio. hopefully I won't have any more issues with this rom
For myself, it was much better when I was on stock rom, but since I love testing out new roms, I've learned to live with it... At least it'll still work most of the time.

I think stock GPS SUCKSSSSS!
Dang I was just playing with this guz I'm kinda a GPS freak, and this Inspire, if one thing sucks, it's the GPS. Forver to get locks, and closest accuracy radius ever achieved is 7 meters....any suggestions? GPSFix, GPS Essentials doesn't seem to help. Ugh...guz me likes me my accurate GPS on my phone thingy....I was hoping that when I root it would improve but this feature probably doesn't get a whole lot of attention form the devs (?)
Edit: It is marginally better than the aged iPhone 3G I had, but I took it apart when it almost dead (I kilt it off by some wild ass idea I was going to refurb it) and there were signs of oxidation around the GPS antenna, which makes sense because my perception was that the performance degraded over time.
I have had no major problems with my Inspire 4G while on Inspire 4G ROMs (well... Stock, rooted stock, and Inspired Ace which is customized for the inspire.) On every DHD ROM I have installed, there seems to be a problem with touch input. When typing emails, searches, SMS, and other things random keys will just stop working! Sometimes I can tap them repeatedly and fix it while others you have to exit whatever app you are in and open it back up. It gets really annoying.
I am currently on CoreDroid, but have had this problem with TB Fusion, RCMixHD, and RCMix3D as well. Since Inspired Ace worked fine I tried flashing its HTC_IME.apk to see if this fixed the problem. It didn't. I seem to be the only one with these problems on the Inspire. Has anyone else noticed? Does anyone have any suggestions for what could cause these issues?
(Yes, I am aware of the problems flashing ime packages from other ROMs can cause, I was just trying to see if it fixed the problem. I had to backup zip ready to flash in case it caused FC problems...)
Thanks in advance guys!
I'm using leedroid and I have the same problems of random keys not working at random times.

Wait so there is no possibility of ripping the drivers from stock and flashing or getting a kernel with them? And how come it worked on Inspired Ace? Did gtg465x get the driver issue fixed? Not trying to sound angry there just a bit perplexed since IA was dhd based....

Might be hardware than, I do remember it being brought up and it's unfixable.. I've had it happen on factory stock plenty of times. I just change my screen to horizontal and fixes it.

Hmm... Well mine never did that. Only failed to rotate a few times due to a few malfunctioning third party apps... If i find a fix I will post it.
I've had this as well and thought that maybe it was Better Keyboard having an issue with either the Inspire in general, or CoreDroid. So this is happening to others using the stock keyboard. Glad it's not just me.

No you aren't alone... I consulted gtg465x and he only edited a few things in /system/customize so I flashed the IA /system/customize/default.xml and it seems to have greatly improved. Noticed one of those such lags but it is not the one out of every hundred that it was. I typed this a few other things multiple sms one of which was long and only had to tap one key multiple times to get it to work. And only three taps at that!
If I further test it I will ask gtg for his permission and post the default.xml in a flashable zip.
Now all that is left to do is edit build.prop to make my phone say inspire not dhd then flash from mdj v21 to 23, calibrate battery for this ROM (grr... Coredroid updates wiped my battery stats while it was only at 63 percent charge during install) and then I can finally be happy and leave my phone exactly how it is! Yeah that will last all of what? A week maybe? Haha nah I am happy on coredroid!

I've had this happen to me on multiple ROM's and it always seems to be the "e" key that stops working for me. I just restart my phone or change input methods and it usually fixes it for a while.
Wish there was a permanant fix cause it does get annoying.

According to my research, editing the build.prop file on Sense ROMS doesn't directly reflect what is listed in About Phone. It seems that you have to edit default.xml in /system/custom/CID.... before installing the ROM
Yeah I read the same thing.right after i posted that... Oh well! Maybe when I get bored enough to do it. And after further testing i concluded that changing the default.xml to disable some of the keyboard layouts and things as gtg465x did didn't really help all that much... On the bright side, i may just go back to inspired ace and use uot kitchen to customize it

So nobody has any other potential fixes for these freezes? Has it happened on every ROM you guys have used or what? I tried replacing my customize folder with the one from ia with cut down keyboard languages and layouts but no luck. Maybe we can find a fix!
EDIT: There may appear to be some confusion here. The problem in reference is not that the keyboard fails to rotate, gets stuck in landscape, or shows that a message is being typed and nothing appears on screen. The problem I am having here is that certain keys in random order at completely random times do not work but the keys around them do. This results in messages such as "Hey that bnd sunded relly gd" instead of "Hey that band sounded really good!!!" because the A and O ceased to function and likewise the exclamation point which is with the A. Also, at times the key will show it is being pressed but stops registering before the symbol it relates to is pressed. These problems exist on stock android keyboard and on sense keyboard. Hopefully someone will find a fix in drivers or something otherwise we will have to wait for a cracked official OTA GB update if that ever happens as they say it will...

I´m having the same issue, and it´s driving me crazy!!!
It´s weird, because I´ve had this phone for months, and had no problems, until a week ago.
I´m on Stock ROM BTW.
no solution? this is an on going problem and hard to ignore...
I have to agree with everyone here.. It is a pretty glaring flaw in the Inspire. And many people think that it barely happens.. But it is a problem that occurs for me at least 5 times a day and that is not an exaggeration. Everything that I have been reading does say that this is an impossible thing to fix.. Just a bit frustrating. Does anyone have a way that lessens this from occurring?
ive had this problem also for awhile. ive had it on every custom rom that i can think of. i used coredroid and cm7 for awhile. right now im using miui. ive tried 3-4 different keyboard at least, and had this problem with all of them. the keyboards accuracy also seems to decline. when switching to a new keyboard the problem initially goes away, but it eventually starts doing it again with the different keyboard.
finally! thanks you, guys. Finally I get support for a bug that supposedly didn't exist. I have been out of the rooting and ROM flashing game for a few months, as I got a new Inspire and never got the chance to root it. I finally caught a break from school work and got fed up with having to do battery pulls on the ATT stock ROM (terribly made, I must say. Sense froze daily.) I rooted and flashed the trusty old Inspired Ace and what do you know? flawless. as always. I flash the new coredroid 8.1 to see if the keyboard bug still persisted. For the first day, I had no problems. Then the freezes came back. I think it is very possibly a side effect of the undervolt kernel. As for those that say all phones are not created equally, and my processor just can't take the ROM, is that really likely on two phones in a row while the inspired ace ROM works flawlessly?
Edit: Also, for those that say stick to IA if it works, it hasn't been updated in a long long time and never will be since GTG465x moved to the Captivate
It's not that people don't beleive you, its just that this is not a common enough bug for it to be a software issue. It has to be a specific hardware malfunction. I have never had this problem on any Rom configuration that I have used. I have never seen it as a reported bug either.
Sent from my Inspire 4G Using XDA Premium
Good point... It just still doesn't make since since one DHD ROM didn't do it all yet others do. Coredroid I is not doing it nearly as severely cd6 did. So maybe there is hope that it is a fluke combination of hardware and software bugs rarely manifested.

Bump
Well, in preparation for android 4 I decided to get used to AOSP ROMs since they will probably be more widely available than ICS Sense ROMs. After using cm7.1 for just two days, the bug is still there. Note that this is a different inspire than the thread was started on. Does anyone have any solutions? It just makes no sense that this bug does not occur for me on Inspired Ace or Stock but does on every other GB Rom I have tested. For everyone reading this with the urge to pop a comment at me like "Stupid, stick with IA if it works," that ROM has been abandoned since May 5, so it is outdated. Any hopes for ICS roms solving the problem?
Keyboard app is not the problem. Does it on touch input (sense ROMs), swiftkey X, swype, and android default keyboard.
As some of you have come from the captivate know what I did there with Rom Q&A threads. I am doing the same here. In an effort to clean up the site. All Rom related question shall from now on be posted in the proper Q&A or will be deleted on sight.
I feel like I'm posting incorrectly here but this thread says CM Q&A so if i am I sincerely apologize but here goes nothing...
I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 RC1. Before i installed CM7 i did a wipe of data and cache.
The google navigation app works for about 2 or 3 minutes then loses gps signal. I have to exit navigation then bring it up again and it will immediately get a gps fix then disconnect after another 2-3 minutes. I have really searched around for a fix and i'm not even sure which one to try.
Below are the threads that i have found that may fix the issue. I don't believe they will since the problem isn't getting a fix which it does. It it just losing the fix after a brief period of time.
If i use MapQuest it works flawlessly. It just really bothers me that i can't get a stock app to work...
Which one is the most viable? If non of the threads below will help can you politely point me in the right direction?

This is how it works for me as well. Just toggle GPS off and back on while still in the navigation app. Should come back up and stay on from that point on.

There is a way to quick search the phonebook with the stock CM7 dialer, but there's an extra keystroke involved. While the dialer is up on the screen, just press the search button on the bottom right of your phone. Then you can quick search through your contacts.

I had a issue with mytracks and GPS. It seemed to cut out frequently and when the trip was done it logged me as going almost twice as far due to zig zagging in my track.
Very low data speeds in CM7, what gives?
I'm new to android and to rooting. I understand that CM7 does not support 4G, but I'm not even seeing 3G speeds when I have it installed. My speed test results are averaging in the 0.4 - 0.5 mbps range down, and similar or some times better up.
On ANY other rom I see better speeds. I'd be ok with similar speeds to what I saw on my Iphone 3g, but when I tether right now on CM7 it makes me long for the good ole days of dial up. Seriously, I frequently see sub 56kbps speeds.
I WANT to use CM7. I love all the tweaks and features, but the data is so slow! Any suggestions to how I could fix this and get back to my 1.5 mbps 3G speeds?
Radio: 26.06.06.30
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G
Kernel (What ever came with the phone? Ive not changed kernels that I'm aware of)
Thanks,

Did you make sure the APN's are correct? There is a APN thread in the dev forum.. If you are in 4g area you should see faster speeds than 1.5Mb.. Iam in dallas and see 3.5Mb down 1.1Mb up.. Either way, make sure the APN settings are correct.
By chance has anyone's phone gotten laggy at random or where it'll temporarily hang/freeze in the later builds?

Something this severe hasn't happened to me yet. I might see a little sluggishness from time to time, but it doesn't cause the phone to hang or freeze.

+1 on one7dchevy's suggestion. CM7 works with HSPA+ / 4G just as well as any other ROM (I've seen speeds up to 6-7Mb/s), as long as you've got the right APN config. Link to the APN thread is in my sig - be careful though, the OP of that thread is a real jerk.
BTW the radio version you're using is just fine - and the RIL that comes with CM7 works fine with that radio.
Posted this question over in the CM forums but they seem to get alot less traffic than here. Figured I'd give it a shot.
Flashed this device a while back. Now it's randomly losing GSM signal, wifi is fine. When I attempt to scan for a network provider it just errors out.
It's a AT&T device, Inspire 4g
It's running: 7.0.3-DesireHD
baseband: 12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0099HM (Jan 27 2011, 16:12:49)
Having to swap to and from airplane mode every few hours to maintain signal is getting old. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this is my daily handset and I'm missing way to many calls. I've confirmed with my gf's captivate that it's not random network outages.
I even rolled back to an old nandroid backup where this didn't happen and it continues to happen.

I've been (mostly) lurking on XDA boards for a couple of years, having had a Droid X, Droid Charge, and lately an Inspire. I am a confirmed flashaholic, and historically rarely stick with one ROM for longer than a few weeks.
The Inspire though, presents an interesting and somewhat frustrating problem. In a nutshell, I am unable to hold a GPS lock for longer than 3 minutes at a time on anything other than a Sense ROM. In digging around on the boards, it is clear that this is a known issue on the Inspire (Desire HD too) running anything built off of CM7. Now, for the average user this might not be a huge deal, but I drive a tow truck for a living and rely heavily on GPS for trips, every night.
I have attempted each and every fix available for this problem, with no lasting success. It's a shame because on occasion I love to run pure CM7, and the Inspire has a superb CM7 hybrid available in Absolution. And now the AOSP ICS builds are nearing completion, but they still present a problem due to the CM7 parts used. Why am I stuck with Sense on this device in order to use Navigation effectively?
To be clear, I love this phone, not going anywhere, and I've got Sense 3.5 growing on me just fine, currently running Mikrunny, but I do miss the stripped down speed of CM. Why was this never addressed by Cyanogenmod's team? It's documented, even on CM's own boards. Can't blame the devs here, they are working off of source that is inherently bugged, or deficient, IMHO. Have tried countless market app fixes, GPS Test, GPS Status, etc. Found a great thread on the Desire board that greatly improves the number of satellites visible to the device and the speed of the fixes, but none help hold a lock longer than 3 or 4 minutes at a time. Frustrating.
Purpose for this thread? Well, to vent a little I guess, but more importantly to see if anyone with deeper knowledge than me on the topic has further insight...a HEAVY GPS user like myself perhaps?

I'm having very good fixing and holding on black ice ROM with crypted's agps fix ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252011), specifically the "at&t flavored" option.
I am also using CM7 and I found that modifying my gps.conf as described in this thread really helped me. I was having troube getting a lock at all, would try for 10 minutes, but now I can get a lock in under 1 min.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
I use GPS Status to get the A-GPS data.
https://market.android.com/details?...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lY2xpcHNpbS5ncHNzdGF0dXMyIl0.
I've also found that turning the gps off and back on at the initial signal loss works well. I field tested my inspire using an ics rom on a 2.5 hr road trip. It did lose the signal within the first 2 minutes, but toggling the location services button fixed it. After the first drop I kept the signal for the entire trip, both ways
I may have found something, but I need a few others to try it out and see if it is reproducible.
If folks here are comfortable modifying their build.prop file can anyone give this a shot and post back here if it worked for them?
Change
ro.product.model=Desire HD
to
ro.product.model=Inspire 4G
Reboot.
Test the GPS without toggling.
A couple of caveats. I'm running on the BlackIce ROM (a CM7 derivative which does have the gps toggle issue still) and I have applied crypted's AGPS patch (which improved the lock considerably but did not fix the toggle bug).

Doesn't make a difference. Download GPS Status from the market. Before you fire up Google maps run GPS status first. As soon as it downloads the assisted gps data fire up Google maps and you will be good to go.
GPS Status is useful but it doesn't address the toggle annoyance.
Did you actually try the build.prop edit?
I also use blackice with crypted's 3.1 gps patch. Google navigation is buggy, but I like to drive my very light car out in the stocks on the twisties where their is edge, gprs, or nothing. So, I use Navigon. It's gotten better now that garmin bought them and the routing engine is leaps and bounds better than Google. It works flawlessly.

Are you serious? Its a $40 freakin app! https://market.android.com/details?id=com.navigon.navigator_checkout_us&hl=en
I'm dead serious. It's worth every penny if you need gps and don't want to be subject to the propagation of radio frequency for your map data. It works very well. Some people ***** about it not working, but my guess is that they are incompetent. Also, navteq has the best map data for North America. I can uncheck a box and it'll route me on rural roads that would require a custom rock crawler to traverse.
Also, I tend to get the best gps and everything else results with radio 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M.

But the question is, will it come on by itself without having to toggle it off and on? Mine gets a fast fix and will stay connected so long as I toggle it off and on and don't let the screen time out or close the program. Any of that happens and I have to toggle it again. This is with CM7 nightly 260.
I am using a stock Inpire 4g (for now). FWIW, If Google maps/navigation is the first app to attempt to access the GPS after the GPS has been turned on, it will never get a signal lock for me. I have to run GPS Status (a great app) before trying anything else. Sometimes this means toggling GPS off and back on, running GPS Status, waiting for lock, and then resuming Google maps/navigation. Even if I start Google, realize my mistake, and then run GPS Status with Google still in the background, GPS Status will "see" as many as 10 satellites with strong signals, and never get lock. I only have to run GPS Status once after GPS has been turned on. Then, if I leave the GPS on, I can use any other app as much as I want with no problems.
My current phone got stolen, so I need something on a budget for the meanwhile. I was thinking of getting a captivate since it has lot of development with stable ICS builds..
My only concern is the GPS ? I had heard there were problems initially with early galaxy S units, resulting in poor GPS performance. Do they still exist in ICS roms or were they fixed ? Also if anyone know were these on hardware side or if they were just software bugs?

There are several threads on the gps problem and it's not related to rom, per se. I am on GB and changing the etc/gps.conf file has made my GPS reliable. The position of the GPS antenna inside the phone is far from ideal and samsung didn't ship it with best settings in the gps.conf file.
if you search for 'gps.conf' you will find the threads. it is pretty simple to replace the gps.conf file or edit it.
Some ROMs include the gps.conf fix.

I love many things about my captivate, but the GPS is not one of them. There are fixes that help some, but it still seems too unreliable. If I'm driving it loses signal all too often.
Gps
For a decent gps signal I flash H3llstorm GPS Fix after flashing a Rom... Still Doesn't compare to other devices signal strength, but makes gps usable
It works on CM9, AOKP and MIUI
-Sorry for bad English
GPS, also, depend on your baseband version.some baseband firmwares consumes more battary charge, but gives better GPS signals. I use XXJVT modem and have no issues with GPS signal.
I figured out something cool. If I hold my captivate up to the windshield it will lock on nicely, whereas if it's in my lap when driving it won't. Then I have a windshield mount where I keep it. It's been working better. This has been true on AOCP and jelly bean.
Running aokp kang build 4 GPS locks normally < 30 sec

After flashing to latest stable Cyanogenmod 9.1 my GPS is very good. I get 8 out of 9 satellite lock in about 5 seconds where it used to take 30-40 seconds with stock ROM and about 20-30 with 2.3.5 ROM I used for a while. That's in exactly the same spot right in front of my house.
that's the only thing i hate about Captivate @@
GPS is unbelievably weak, it has to combine with gps from mobile network, i can never use pure gps with only satellites @@
The GPS is my least favorite component of my Galaxy S.
I do use my Captivate as my GPS while geocaching.
I find that for best reception I have to hold the phone so the back is pointed up. To do this is is slightly over my head and I have to look up at it. Going though some trees and leaning over the phone it will loose connection. In the car driving I only find occasionally it will loose connection. In the mount on the dash it is in the ideal orientation.
My Transformer Prime tablet has an even worse GPS but the update external GPS add-on improves the GPS to be much better than the Captivate.
If it realy matters you can get a blue tooth GPS that can work with this and probably any phone you might upgrade to in the future.
I am running ICS on my phone and under Location Services there is GPS source to select different GPS. I just tried to connect using bluetooth to my Garmin car GPS but the only bluetooth functionality it has is to send sound to car stereo. and I could not even pair the Garmin with the Captivate.
Lots of bluetooth GPS receivers to choose from on eBay.
This thread might give you some more information of some of the units others have tried.

I am going to stick with the GPS in my phone. It has worked good enough for two years and will be updating my phone in Feb or March.

Honestly, you don't choose the Captivate for its GPS. Although, many ROMs have GPS fix and makes it usable. I can't say I had much issue with mine, it does the job it needs to do but depending on your connection, it might not be optimal. I did lose signal for a few seconds while driving but never lost signal to leaning over it tho eh
I almost want to say that the Captivate has the worst GPS out of most phones but I don't have much experience with other phones. The captivate is decent though and I think with the latest versions of JB, it seems to operate much better.

I've noticed that the google nav app maybe sensitive to the accuracy of the system time. When the clock is off by more that a few seconds, it seems to consistently report my position incorrectly, by 50 meters or more, in the same direction.
For example, when driving southbound, it will show me driving south, but 100 meters off the road to the east and this offset will persist until the clock is corrected.
I've installed clocksync app and set it to sync time every hour. It seems to help: Google nav doesn't give the persistant offset, but it does lose lock sometimes. I just toggle gps enable in the status bar and it recovers.
My gps.conf file uses the hellstorm fix. I am running GB debloated stock rom with Corn 7.06a kernel.
