Temporary solution to Death Grip issue - HTC Sensation

I decided to make a new thread from another thread's reply so more people can see it.
Hi, I dont know where to start....I will try to explain as English is not my native.
I bought my Sensation few days ago and I was very sad as you guys after discovering mine also has death grip issue. I took mine back to the shop and asked them about the problem. They tested my Sensation with their wifi modem and no matter how I holded it in landscape, it only dropped 1 bar. I thought may be because their modem is so close to me so it couldnt prove the problem with them. I took it back home but inside I was still very unsatisfied but wondered why with their wifi, even I tried to walk far a bit but it still didnt drop much.
I went home and tried to configure where the problem is. I remember the shop wifi channel was number 6. Then today, I went to a book coffee shop and with their wifi, I again can hold my Sensation in landscape and the signal was still very strong. I used Wifi analyzer and saw their wifi channel was 6 (normally we leave our wifi at channel 1 by default).
The question raised again why at those 2 places the death grip issue do not occure however it does with my house's wifi. My current wifi modem wireless n, no matter I tried to change its wifi channel to 6, death grip still occured. I change to another old wireless g wifi modem and configure the wifi channel and bump!!! I am writing to you guys in landscape and the wifi is as strong as it can be, only 1 bar dropped.
So to my knowledge and hope, as your hopes too, this is a software related (or maybe hardware related but it will be very sad) that Sensation has problem with wireless n. With wireless g, I havent tested with other channels (1 to 11) but with 6, I am vey happy with the wifi signal right now.
I hope these info would help very much with the death grip issue. I nearly sold my Sensation yesterday after posting it online but I decided to keep it. Now, I am happy that I made the right decision after discover where the problem is.
Edited: I also need our big community do more tests on this and see if the problem has been correctly addressed.

You change channel in your wifi modem/router.

Hmmmm will check that out. I think mine's only a single channel

This may be a resolution depending on 2.4 GHz interference in your area, but I happen to have my access point using channel 11 and the death grip issue is still a problem for me.

[Q] So, anyone having WiFi issues with their Sensation?

My WiFi constantly is getting dropped. Even when it's just sitting on my desk in front of me. So I'm not even touching it (not death grip related). I'm about 15 feet away from the router. Anyone else having issues?
Here's the distance I am from the router: http://twitpic.com/5che9y

hahaha. Yeah, I haven't been on active in about a year or so, but not so much a noob . First thing I did was a search (which is down right now) and hit the first few pages to see if any topics had anything in the title. I guess I could have done a google "site:xda-developers sensation wifi" search.
So.... How many out there are having non death grip related wifi issues?
LOL
Yes there are and will be a influx of newbs because of this phone but it won't be the last time either....
Back to topic.
Some may have wifi issues and is warranted. No I am not talking about the death grip issue, just that there is an option on the phone to increase reception by going to the advanced menu of the wifi setting. There is a toggle that reads to the likes of wifi best performance.
This is probably for some instances where wifi is weak but some should try and report back if it helps.

Yeah, I've got that sucker checked, and am still having the same issue.
Yes! I have posted another thread about this somewhere in the last 24 hours. I am having wifi issues. My download speeds seem to drop to <10% of normal and the only way to fix it is to cycle wifi off and on. Upload speeds remain the same. This problem is definitely not death grip related since the phone is on a table for most of these tests.

I have read recent threads to see if tmo has your correct IMEI on file as well as an updated SIM card. I did both yesterday. I activated the sim I had that came with the phone and confirmed that the IMEI was indeed correct on tmo's system. I did this via live chat.
After doing that, my data has been pretty constant. No hangups here. I use wifi both at home and at work and connect without a hitch.

same issue here. phone is on my desk here at home about 6 ft from my router and it just drops randomly. its quite annoying. im not touching it so its not deathgrip. though it has done it while im holding the phone vertcially (that is, not holding the top where the antenna is). for some reason i have a hard time getting anything other than edge in my house so i have the wifis on all the time.

well, since i have the option, i decided to try another router. i was using a linksys/cisco e3000 with dd-wrt firmware. the 2.4 radio was the only one on and it was set to g-only. i still have my old linksys wrt54gl sitting around so i plugged it in a little bit ago. obviously 2.4 g-only mode and this is also running dd-wrt. ive been fiddling with my phone here in the same 6ft range and ive not had one drop. perhaps its a router specific issue? i dunno. ill see if i have any more issues tomorrow
I made a thread about my wifi issues a week ago when I got the phone, but I'll join in here too.
My phone just refuses to actually associate with a network most of the time. Stellar signal strength, something else is going on.
the WiFi status menu accessed by dialing *#*#4636#*#* may be able to help some of you.
Mine will say the following:
then
Network State: Disconnected
Supplicant State: SCANNING
Network State: Disconnected
Supplicant State: ASSOCIATED
then:
Network State: Connecting to [insert name of wireless network here]
Supplicant State: ASSOCIATED
then back to:
Network State: Disconnected
Supplicant State: SCANNING
When it is in "ASSOCIATED" state, it lists a signal strength, BSSID, link speed, and MAC address of the AP. No IP address of course, it doesn't get that far. The scan results shows about 30 entries (half a screen full of tiny text) all the same SSID, one per AP and the APs are all over (big tech company with a very solid network).

just to update, ive had my sensation running on my old router for about 4 hours now (with the "best wifi performance" option OFF even) and not a single drop, even holding landscape. it seems the phone and either the e3000 or the version of dd-wrt on the e3000 have issues working nicely together.
I'm experiencing the issue where my wifi bandwidth drops to a very slow (roughly 300 kbs) rate after spending some time on my wifi network. Restarting wifi on my Sensation immediately resolves the issue, only for it to crop up again sometime later.
On the topic of it being a router issue, my home network is 2 WRT54GLs WDS'd together (running Tomato) that offers no issue for any other computer or phone.
I returned my first Sensation that was experiencing the issue and received a second, which acts in the same manner.
Quite frustrating, as I rely heavily on wifi at home as even my cellular reception is not the best where I live, forget data, and use wifi and wifi calling to get by.

Death Grip and wireless mode.

So, I've been afflicted with the death grip issue at home something fierce. If I hold the phone in landscape mode as if I were to type with my thumbs, the wifi cuts out. It doesn't seem to matter how close I am to the wifi router or if I turn on Wi-Fi best performance. At home, the network is configured to use 802.11g for compatibility with some older devices.
At work, I run an 802.11n network (I'm the IT Director). While I've got much better access points and better line of sight, I have similar sorts of distances. With 802.11n the death grip issue seems less significant. The network never drops out completely (I lose maybe a bar) although network *traffic* seems to stall to a degree. This is true even if I go into other rooms where I don't have great line of sight.
I'm still doing some surreptitious testing (since I have work to do, too) but I thought I'd ask the rest of you if you're having seriously issues with the death grip, what mode is your wifi in? 802.11g or 802.11n?
I really haven't had this problem, when I hold it in landscape it goes down 1 bar but comes right back,I'm starting to think its device related ,just like the HD2 some of them had wi-fi issues and it was just the hardware couldn't do nothing about it but exchange the device
I used to have this issue until I changed the wifi performance to maximum and out a gel skin case on. Now mine doesn't even drop a bar from 2 rooms away.

I would notice the signal go down when I held it in landscape but it never dropped completely but last night I got the real effect of it. I was streaming a movie from my computer and viewing it on my sensation using splash top (only about 15-20 feet away from the roiter) Everytime I held the sensation and touched the "death grip" spot my video would stutter.. Tried setting the wifi to max performance and I have the tmo gel case on.
I guess one difference between this and the Iphone antenna-gate is that if HTC does consider it a problem and does fix it, they only have to replace the back cover and not the whole phone
I heard someone said foil on the outside helps out the issue, but it looks really ugly. Wonder if we can come up with a fix that can be done on the inside of the cover. Maybe attach more wiring to the connections or something..
Wonder if those cheap cell phone singal booster on the inside cover would help out at all.. hey if foil did then maybe one of the will shrugs
I just have to say I don't think this "death grip" is a hardware issue .... I think it is a software issue. I had a g2 and flashed cyanogen ... Worst WiFi reception ever. Went for a more stock based Rom and bingo! Also I noticed if you turn off mobile networks from the task bar and turn on WiFi, you will have superb WiFi...
On the sensation of course. Lol

Trying to Figure out the Wifi-Death Grip Issue
Something Odd happened to me, i wanted to share with the rest of the comments here because i have not been impressed with my Sensation's performance so far. I have had the normal low volume and the erratic sense speeds along with what Phil showed when trying to use the carousel, but nothing was more annoying as with the wifi issue. I got it five feet from my router and i have two routers and one is open and one has PS2K. I tried it with and without the cover and behold i lost my signal when i held it in landscape or put it lying flat. I decided i needed to go to a T-mobile and complain about it, but while i was waiting to be attended, i went ahead and started playing with the sensation they had on display. To my surprise i could not duplicate the issue at all, I checked their version and went to the advanced setting under wifi and it was no put on maximum performance. I pulled out mine and as you could imagine, i could not duplicate the issue anymore. I was puzzled because although i lost some bars, it remained connected and i did not lose the signal completely or as easily when i was at home. I decided not to look like a fool and when across the street to a Best-Buy, and logged onto their open network and had no issue again i tried to put the death grip on it, put it in landscape or lay it flat on it's back and although i was looking some bars, i could not duplicate what was going on at my house. I went back home and reset my routers and the issue is still there. So from what i can tell, i think we may need to find out if this issue is with some routers only or with the encryption used.
FYI: I have a N1, IPad2, HD2, MY3G and don't have any wifi or death grip issues with any one of them so i am seriously leaning to a software issue.
Whatever, the issue i can see Why Phil and a lot others do not see this issue and i can understand why a lot of us are experiencing the issue. Hope something is found out soon.
Routers i use:
DLink (DIR 601) Open network
Ambit WPA2-PSK
(i have tried changing channels and updating firmware on both routers)

Cant take the WIFI issue anymore as I think its Hardware

The design is to blame for the wifi issue. IMO the G2x rebooting problem is less severe than this. I use wifi 90% of the time and ive had 3 units which all had this issue.
The others that dont, I dont know how you got lucky, or if you got a bad ass N router and thats the trick, but I cant take it. I cant even play a online FPS game in my room without losing signal. Anyone want to prove me wrong in that there are a few good ones? and if so please post a video?
Death grip here also. I guess I'll just have to live with it.
However, there is one good thing. HTC can release a cover with a design that won't have the issue (they won't, but I hope there will be some 3rd party ones)

"Deathgrip"? WTF is that. the iPhone disgusts me, thanks for this.. now it's running rampant all over the internet even when it doesn't make sense.
There is obviously a problem with the WiFi signal strength and yes it's a design/hardware issue. Exchanging the phone won't fix the problem.
I solved it by moving up a WiFi router in my room that repeats the WiFi signal from my main router. I had the secondary router already running DD-WRT software which is required for this type of thing.
Why didn't you just continue your other thread? 2 about the same thing is a bit much
No deathgrip here, I've tried and tried. Dunno what to say Brah. Works the same with my N router and my G router, Perfectly.

It's got to be ground issue.
yeah. i have been with mine for 2 weeks and since about just a couple of hours ago the wifi wont work. it was working fine all day then i was going to check fb and it said that there was no connection. it clearly had full signal. i restarted the phone and worked well. then later i was going to access the camera app directly from the lock screen and it froze, it wont do anything. pulled the battery and turned on the phone. after turning on the phone i turned on the wifi and it will not connect. it detects the signals and tells you all the info about it but it wont connect. it stays in a loop saying obtaining ip address, disconnected and scanning and then goes back again to obtaining ip address and so on. i have done 2 hard resets and restarted the router and nothing.btw the router is in the same room just a couple of feet from me.
EDIT : i think i jump the gun too fast. tested my ps3 thru the wireless network and it connects like 50% of the time. again the ps3 is in the same room as the router. went to my cousins house and the phone conected to the wireless effortless on the first try. i dont know if it is the phone or the router.i dont know what to think anymore.
The Sensation doesn't have brilliant WiFi reception and can't hold on to a weak signal if you hold the device, whereas something like a laptop could.
But with a good signal it does work well and for me that's a fair trade off at present. Yes it could be better, but is there a perfect device.
Typing this in Starbucks at present over WiFi and yes in landscape, and I even have my fingers covering the back of the device
Full signal strength. Same at home.
I tried this in another Starbucks, I lost connection every time in landscape mode, returned in portrait, that has been the only time that I could recreate this death grip issue.....

I've seen a few issues lately with the Cisco/Linksys E1000 routers and wifi. 3 out of the 5 i installed in the past 6 months kept dropping wifi, even right next to it. Probably not what you have, but just in case, i thought i would mention it. At $50-$60 they've been a popular model lately.
I am using a netgear n router and I still have signal in the basement and second floor (router is on the first floor)..I haven't noticed any WiFi problems but I have only had the phone 3 days...but I use WiFi calling all the time..

Wifi death grip -- Who has it?

Since I can't find any recent posts about the wifi death grip issue which many Desire S users seem to have, I'd like to start a poll to see how bad the issue really is and what could be possible causes.
Please fill in the poll. It would also help to post your specs together with your answer to see if the phones with death grip all have something in common.
Something like:
HBoot
Rom
Kernel
Radio
Date of purchase (If you still have/know it)
Simlock yes/no -- If yes, brand
Color (Grey or black)
Also, please keep in mind that you have to be a few meters away from your modem to properly test if you really have the death grip.
Thanks!
date of purchase 3 months back
brought the device for full price
black
the rest is in my sig
i have tried all rom/kernel/radio combos ,but its still there
the latest radio makes the problem a lot less intense than before
also people say they face problems with g routers, those who use n routers don't seem to have this problem(i am unable to verify this as i only have a g router)
so can someone test with a n router & the radio im using?

I bought my phone a month ago. It was shipped S-off so I rooted it. Stock ROM, black.
I have experimented with the deathgrip multiple times in various locations, the result is always the same.
As soon as I cover the back panel with my palm, WiFi strength drops by exactly 2 bars. As an example, the connection is excellent and I have 3 bars but as soon as I cover the back panel with my hand the signal drops down to 1 bar. If I've got a good connection with 2 bars then doing this results in a lost connection of 0 bars. It works like clockwork, doesn't matter where I am or which WiFi I use.
There definitely is a deathgrip issue, what bothers me the most is that this happens quite often when I'm using the phone in landscape mode, like texting or playing something via WiFi.

I didn't even know there was a wifi death grip for the Desire S, I've been using it for 2 months now and did not seem like an inconvenience for me.
When I hold the phone near the top, covering the back with my hand the wifi drops- I find this really annoying as it limits to how I can hold the phone..
i also have it. its annoying.
I never completely lose wifi and I never seem to notice a loss in speed but the signal indicator always goes right down.

[Q] Nexus S extremely poor wifi

Hello there,
i know that this topic has been already debated several times but I couldn't find any solution to it.
I'm running MIUI 1.8.19, android version 2.3.5, kernel version 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3, baseband I9023XXKB3.
Wifi signal is extremely weak, few meters away from any router and the connection becomes extremely unstable making the wifi experience a total nightmare.
I've been previously tried NSCollab and also different baseband configuration files but nothing seems to get things better.
For what is worth (even though the wifi is bad anywhere and with any router) my router is a Linksys WRT150N running on DD-WRT.
The Nexus S wifi thing seems to be a little bit controversial. Some users seem having no problem with it, some other experience the same problems i do.
Question #1: is that a hardware, software or both kind of problem?
question #2 : is there any workaround that would allow me at least to comfortably browse the internet from my bedroom (5-6 mts away from my router) without getting disconnected every other 30 sec?
Thank you in advance,
D.
You kept a phone that can't hold a wifi connection over a distance of 5m? I'd have returned it on day 1.
It's normal that the distance of WIFI on smartphones is less than say a laptop or pc, but 5m is definitly not normal.
Verify w/ other wifi networks, same problem = return it. If not, bad luck, might be the combination of your phone + the router not working properly.
You can try changing radios to see of that improves your situation, for some it did.
Yes, it is normal having a weaker wi-fi but my blackberry has no problem at all. it is the nexus and it seems to be quite a widespread problem around the globe.
Well i was abroad on business and couldnt return it. Just looking for clues....
I know that netarchy's kernel uses updated wifi drivers, you can try flashing that and see if it does anything.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Hi there,
i tried several kernels: netarchy, matrix and also installed MIUI and also tried the MIUI Brainmaster ROM. Same result: in my bedroom the wifi signal score a miserable -85/90 db. Is there any kernel out there optimized for wifi? I mean, it seems that the wifi weakness on the nexus S is a common problem.
Thank you in advance.
It sounds as though you have a hardware problem or a router problem. I have to go to a room in the other side of my house to get -90 db and even then it doesn't disconnect. I have to get about 200 feet away before it disconnects.

Also it might have something to do with interference on whatever channel you are connecting on but I don't really know enough about wireless networking to help you troubleshoot that.

What i'm wondering is wheter Samsung uses different wifi chipset on the same phone cause i'm not the only one complaining about it. just google "nexus s weak wifi" and you'll see hundreds of people with the same problem.
still wondering if there's a software solution to it.

It has been documented that the Nexus S uses an under powered wifi chip. The chip uses less power but with that comes a weaker signal.
mine seems to be weaker than average...
Yours does seem weaker than normal, but no nexus s has decent wifi range.
What I have done is purchase 2 old linksys wrt54gl routers, have them both loaded up with DD-WRT and then link them (bridged mode or WDS if you prefer) and situate the routers in either end of my house. I have a decent sized 3 bed detached house, with a 70ft garden, I can now get a reliable wifi connection near the end of my garden on my nexus, where as previously I couldnt get to the back door
Might be an old thread, but I just traded my trusty HD2 for a Nexus S and god I hate the WIFI reception on this thing.
I am on stock 2.3.4 Rooted with KD1 radio and 2.6.35.14(Pete's) kernel. Tried just about anything out there, and nothing worked out.
Being a Pure Google experience phone, I was expecting a lot more happening for this phone, but it seems that my 2009 released HD2 was way better for all it had to offer.
Subscribing to this thread!
WIFI is fine for me, same as with HTC Desire, and stronger than iPhone 3G...
Its terrible on my Sprint Nexus.
Where I have an Ipod touch and a LG Optimus, they get an 'excellent' connection anywhere in the house. The Nexus drops the connection all the time, shows a 'poor' 5Mbps connection.
Will swapping the phone do any good?
OK.
I bought my Nexus S yesterday and I was soooo disappointed because of its poor wifi reception... But...
I am a network Administrator and a few minutes ago i just couldn't beleive that about 10 meters away from our Cisco Antennas i had about 89db signal so i started playing... and guess what i now have 55dbs at the same spot! What i found out is that Nexus S doesn't work well with High Frequencies so I disabled channels 8-13 and my AP had to work on the low channels and BAM! everything works fine now (My phone is in stock FW)
I hope I helped

I found this channel number which it uses to make no difference to the wifi performance.
I tried channels 1,6,11, no difference.
The phone just has poor wifi.
As a note, usually I don't use the low channel '1', as this gets interference from microwaves more than the upper channels.
just bought a Nexus and and experiencing heavy wifi issues.
I tried changing AP channel but doesn't fix.
Testing signal strenght with a LG Optimus one for comparison:
1- LG: -72db. stable
2- Nexus S: -85db web pages loading fails quite often.
Tomorrow my NS will return to the store. Bye Bye
