Hi,
I am a new rooted user and have been following all MT4G threads here at XDA pretty closely. Can anyone help me know which kernels I can flash on the 03012011 Nightly(cm_glacier_full-11.zip ). I haven't ever flashed a kernel and I don't know what it does and how it helps.
I'll appreciate any info that you can give me.

Well you can use dumfuq's SmartCMKernel or Faux's CM7RC v1.3 kernels. ATM you might want to go with dumfuq's as its the most stable CM7 kernel other than default. You can find it in development section, once downloaded to SDCard just go in to Recovery and wipe cache, davlik and then Install zip from SDCard> Choose from SDCard> Select it wherever you put it and then flash it as you normally flash rom's. Then reboot and let it run for few min and let it do its thing.

Thanks for your help. Getting this kernel now. I heard about setcpu and Quadrant. Do I need those and how/what are they used for? what kind of difference would this kernel give me?
SetCPU - name explains it but if you don't know its controls clock frequency, so you can over/under clock and even set profiles.
Quadrant - benchmark app its just to brag how high score you got nothing special, don't let it get to your head it means nothing as the synthetic benchmark no way translate in to real world performance its just pissing contest lol
Keep in mind in CM7 you have built in mCPU performance controller to to handle clock frequency which you can access via Setting> CM Setting> Performance> CPU Setting.

You do relize you allready have a aftermarket kernel installed when you download any Rom here in the forums, right? Its ok to install different ones but FYI you dont need to in order to overclock.

Thats up to you as only you know what you use so you can better utilize the resource. I mean if you don't use anything no reason to OC it to 1.8ghz lol that way you will kill battery.

What are the differences between dumfuq's and faux's? Is there an advantage to one over the other? I've always been using faux's the whole time.
I keep going back to just using the stock CM 7 kernel clocked at 1.5 honestly I think it gives the best overall performance (on my phone at least) and honestly I had issues running over anything past 1.7 with any kernel but again that could just be my phone. I had it oc'ed at 1.7 for a while and now I have it clocked at 1.5 and notice I have less FC (not that I had many at 1.7 but def more apps would choke from time to time) This phone is pretty fast bone dry stock with no oc'ing but it runs beautiful at 1.5. I dont really notice much performance difference from 1.5 to 1.7 but I do notice a battery difference
I' am total noob so sorry for asking stupid questions. I have install stock ICS and now I flashed with GLaDOS V2.2 kernel. In my settings or app drawer I don't see some kind of customization. I want to know where and how to adjust the speed of the CPU to work on smaller frequency ( to have better battery ) and to adjust the screen colors ( GLaDOS V2.2 voodoo setings ) ?
Also I have green flickr when unlocking the phone (when I was on stock kernel I didn't have this problem). How to fix this?
Again sorry for asking stupid questions but I really can't find answer with search function on this forum.
P.S. I have Nexus S GT-I9020T on Wind, Stock ICS ROM 4.0.3 and GLaDOS V2.2 kernel.
Well I'm kinda a newb to the nexus but I have the same setup, had to install voodoo from the app market and used setcpu to change cpu. Setcpu is not free.
Can somebody tell me why my rgb settings won't stay.
I was thinking that Voodoo and CPU setup have to be implemented in the standard setup menu of the ROM. I think that on CMD 7 they were implemented inside the setup menu.
Install NSTools from Market.
Thank you for the help.
Hi all
I am really a newbie to this Android world, I recently bought a Google Nexus S (I9020T), and I have been looking for some ways to maximise its ability, and I came across something called Voodoo Kernel.
What is it exactly? What is the benefit of using it on my phone please?
Thanks
It's an optional feature of a kernel which provides a much better driver and config for the sound equipment in the nexuses.
Voodoo colours allows you to change the white balance of amoled displays (all nexus s besides i9023).

Thank you very much for your quick reply.
So voodoo kernel is basically a kernel contain Voodoo colours? That's all?
(btw, how is kernel different to a ROM?)
So in order to get this feature, do I have flash a completely new ROM please? or I can just download it and install on my phone?
Thanks

A ROM is the Operating System.
A kernel is the interface between the ROM and the hardware of the phone.
You can install a ROM with its own kernel, and after this, flash a new kernel, leaving the rom intact.

No, it's not just colours. As Harbb said, it contains a better audio driver too...you will feel the difference if you often listen to music on your nexus.
Don't think that you will need another ROM. Just flash a kernel that supports Voodoo and get the Voodoo Control App from the market. Given this app, you can change different voodoo settings.
I think I may get it now.
ROM is the operating system, like windows 7
Kernel is similar to the drivers in windows.
so all I need is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876132 ??
and installing/flashing a kernel will not wipe out my data, is it correct please?

Almost . Kernel is like the engine of your ROM. Flashing a new kernel will not wipe your data. Just boot into recovery then wipe cache and wipe dalvik-cache. After that, choose zip file of the kernel, install and reboot.
The link you posted is not the only kernel which supports voodoo. A lot of kernels have this feature like Matrix, ICUP, Glados,....
A ROM is the full OS with both kernel and apps, like a installed copy of Windows 7. The kernel is the part of the OS that manages many things from talking to the hardware, managing tasks/apps executing concurrently, managing memory, etc. I don't know if the kernel in Windows 7 can be easily replaced, but it's very simple for Linux based OS such as Android.
If you want Voodoo, there are two ways to get it. You can root your phone, then download Voodoo Control Plus (I think it's still on special price right now), it will load the Voodoo Sound driver for you. You don't need to flash a custom kernel. But this will only give you Voodoo Sound, not Voodoo Colour. For Voodoo Colour, you must flash a kernel with Voodoo built-in. Depending the ROM you are using, you must pick a kernel suitable for your ROM. Ie. ICS ROM must use a kernel built for ICS, the same goes for GB.

As I know very little, can you recommend me one that is good for Android 2.3.6 in terms of the performance and battery life?

Seems, as if Si_NZ is far more expert than me. I didn't know that Voodoo Sound works without a proper kernel .
Regarding a good kernel for GB, I like the Matrix kernel. It's a good combination of performance, battery life and stability. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100448&highlight=matrix, try the cfs version) But take into account that this is just a personal opinion and that there are a lot of good kernels out there. Have to go to sleep now...

does it matter whether my Android is 2.3.6 or 2.3.5 please?
By the way, why would you choose Matrix please? GLaDOS seems quite good as well (lots of features), also Netarchy seems good as well.
(Just wanna gather information and learn from other experts!!)

Yeah, that's the right one. And no, I don't think that it makes a difference if you have 2.3.5 or 2.3.6.
Of course, Glados and Netarchy are decent kernels too. I chose matrix because it gave me a really good battery life (lost only 3 percent during a whole night) and it's overclockable to 1,46Ghz and I think it has all the mods from glados builtin too. but just try the others too...
Thank you so much, I will find a time to flash a kernel today, may report back my experience.

I'm not sure if it works with ROM Manager, cause I've never used this. I've always used Clockwork RecoveryMod to flash ROMs and kernels.
Are you rooted and have ClockworkRecovery installed? If not, go to the Nexus S General Forum and there you will find Step-to-Step Guides how to do this.
If you are already rooted, boot into recovery and you'll find a backup option in the menu. When it's finished, just follow the steps I described a few posts earlier (wipe cache, wipe dalvik_cache, install kernel).
Thank you again!!
I just love this forum, people are so willing to share and teach!!
How to Remove the CPU Speed limit of 600Mhz on Android 2.2, When I use Andoird 2.3 on this Device [Commtiva Z51], I am able to Clock the CPU at ~800Mhz, I want to do this on Android 2.2, I have a rooted Device.
Maybe a CPU Tuner

What you are referring to is known as overclocking (oc)...in order to overclock, you need a custom kernel, since (mostly) the stock kernel doesnt support oc

[Fyi, Android 2.3 is better than 2.2 in a lot of ways...]

??? What are you trying to tell??
Typed using a small touchscreen
I already have No-frills CPU control from the play store and it works but not over 600Mhz and yes, it is Overclocking (OC), I am running a custom rom, Android 2.3 Roms are available but i am not using those as they drain the battery really fast (even without overclocking). It seams like it is a limitation with Android 2.2 as I have tried other Roms also and they too have the same problem.
No nothing like that...
Oc is kernel dependent...you can make an oc kernel for froyo also...
And if you oc, you will get faster battery drain, and maybe heat issues...
Typed using a small touchscreen
Overclocking
Currently I am using this Rom (Jellybean <link> slinkme.co.cc/jellybean <link> [Added like this as I cant add links now]) , As far as I know this supports overclocking. And also if this kernel does not support Overclocking, Can you give me a OC kernel for Android 2.2.1 (This Rom).
All devices are different, and so is their kernel/rom/etc....you cannot use stuff for my device on yours...
And jellybean is sypposed to be android 4.x/5...and not 2.2.1
Give me a screenshot of the stuff written in about phone...then maybe I can point you to the right direction...
Typed using a small touchscreen
Jellybean is my Rom name, it is Android 2.2.1, I want a Kernel that Supports OC, Do you have one ? Android Jellybean is 4.1.
My Device : http:~//~slinkme.co.cc/mydevice (Remove ~ for the link)

the easiest way...ask your rom developer to make a kernel with OC support. you can't compile a kernel for your device and neither me since I don't even know what your device is.

What kind of PHONE do you have & ROM are you running? THAT determines the kernel.

Nice work here. Just what we needed. I have one request(which if you know me you know I hardly ever make them). Any way in a future release you might be able to get Badass as a governor and sio as a scheduler? I find that combo works incredibly well an another phone of mine and would love to see how it treats the 4g. Also what are you using to set UV if System Tuner ain't sticking? I really hate Set CPU so I'm hoping for another recomendation. Thanks for this.

Let me look into finding and understanding the Badass governor, as well as the schedulers. I try to be conservative and only put things in that I understand, rather than just throwing in the kitchen sink. I agree that both governors and schedulers can impact both user experience as well as battery life.
OK, I found a better source of badass from showp1984 / "Bricked"
On the UV table, I need to work through how Linux deals with what I am used to knowing as sysctl as well as what the various apps expect.

Is it possible to backup the kernel before flashing yours? I tried to use the SGS Kernel Flasher from the market place but it isn't compatible with TWRP. Or is it recommended/manditory that I completely reflash the OS, then flash the kernel, then just restore apps using Titanium Backup Pro? Still getting the hang of it... I just have it burnt in my memory not to restore a backup over a different kernel... thanks to bhundven

Do a nandroid prior to flashing so if something breaks you can revert.
TWRP will backup your kernel. You will also need a backup of /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko Using TWRP to backup /system will cover you there.
I flash more kernels every day than I want to admit. The kernel is in a different partition than the system or data, so the chance of corruption of your "ROM" is pretty small. The only file changed in /system should be the bcm4329.ko (WiFi/Bluetooth module).

but......sad to say 4 me, i dont see any difference in battery life (running cm9, kernel it came with lasted about 16hours with wifi on and only txting), with this kernel my phones battery life only last about 8-10hours (thats with and without wifi on), trying my phone on 200/1400 and at 55% (unplugged it about 7 1/2hours ago), but my wifi has not been on. (i also saw a very bad drop rate, lost 17% battery life in about hour 1/2(wifi was off and it was just sitting)not sure if its because its set at 200/1400 or something else, and i have no other apps running in the background), im not to worried about it since im trying to buy a new phone soon, so for now im trying to make the best i can out of this phone.

Glad to hear it is solid for you!
Have you tried switching to the smartassv2 governor? It is not set as default when the kernel boots (you want a robust kernel when you have to boot into recovery).
