Who's got better ril? - Thunderbolt General

I am an avid fan of both omfgb and cm7, but found omfgb to be more efficient in the data handoff since its release.
I live in an area with both 3g and 4g but also use wifi at work and home. Omfgb seems to handle the switching better, but its not perfect as we all know how difficult the ril merge is turning out to be.
My question is that now cm7 is using the gb radio, is the data switching better than its earlier builds and is it working better than omfgb. I will try a cm7 attempt but am interested from an anecdotal and technical perspective.

Slayher is working with xoomdev for their ril so they're similar minus what xoomdev did before he started talking to Slayher.. notice how they both started supporting MR2 radios at the same time because they'really working together

Yes, I've see their activity and am impressed. Aside from rom stability and features, does either rom have an advantage over the other with data handoff. I guess that is my question. I've tried cm7 in the past and found the there was too much manual switching of settings so I switched to omfgb and found that data handoff was better, but I am wondering how the new radio plays into things.

I guess ymmv, but I only had to toggle once after a reboot on CM7 with MR2, and my speeds are as fast as when I bought the phone.. I've heard stories both ways though so I guess it's dependent on you lol

Intrigued by 1.92 oc. Which kernel/rom combo is best for that support?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
To be honest its not advisable to get to 1.92. Too unstable and performance gains over 1.4 are minimal. If you want fast, run perfect storm 1.4 with ziggys kernel oc to 1.4. Gingerbread roms are nice but unstable and the accompanying radio is horrendous. Finally the gb kernels are not good yet since the source has not dropped.

Thanks! I waited for the lg revolution and that thing is a total bust. Excited!

I personally like Imoseyon's kernels best. Lots of good ROMs available. Play with your options and see what suits you best.

I don't believe so. If you're asking because of the radio issue, check out CM7. It's Gingerbread and has a working Netflix but without the brick risk.

It's not prefect, but no rom is. The main problems are:
1) toggling from wifi to mobile data requires a reboot, although there are reports that this has been fixed
2) some people experience buggy data connections while many do not
Not any kernel will work but Imoseyon's does and is quite good (arguably better than on Sense roms). There are others as well.
While it's pushed as pre-alpha, it's plenty stable enough to run as a daily driver. Many people do. I would rather run it than a Sense 2.1 rom.

I've been using CM7 for about a week now, there was an update on Saturday that fixed the wi-fi and data connections work fine. Only problem I noticed was going into an "Extended Network" area caused 3G to drop, but if you enable international data roaming it connects back to 3G.

Modem Issues w/GB Builds

There's been a lot of discussion about the low WiFi signal from most, if not all, of the Gingerbread builds. Many have speculated that it's simply a display issue and not a performance one.
My wife has a stock ROM (Froyo) and I have the GB build KH1. I did a test comparison of both the WiFi download speeds and the 4G performance.
The KH1 ROM *way* underperformed the Froyo one -- to the point where her stock ROM was at least 2-3x as fast as the KH1 build. 4G performed similarly. WiFi Analyzer also showed a huge difference in signal strength.
I then installed the KH2 modem and tried the same experiment and while it improved it somewhat, it was still woefully lacking in speed over the stock Froyo ROM.
With that said, has anyone found a prior modem build that works better than what's been released recently? This is a huge issue for me and while I love the GB build, to lose that much connectivity speed is troublesome.
There is a thread with all the modems on them, check the bible, you can flash each one to see which is best for you.

I don't think its a modem issue with gb. I've tried them all, wifi still sucks.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
Yeah not much you can do here, there will be more leaks..as wifi is still horrible and unacceptable for such an expensive phone..samsung just have to get it right!!
Thanks for the info and confirmation. I was afraid that we'd have to wait for the CM7 release. I've tried several of the modem releases and nothing has worked any better.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
yeah its just gb..if its really important just flash back to froyo..but theres good benifits for gb..netflix,skype video calling, better battery life..and all around smoother

I just jumped in neck deep and flashed the latest GB rom KII, Doc's new kernel and was surprised at my wifi speeds. before on stock froyo my wifi was sluggish and intermittent. Now as a matter of fact my whole phone is faster, very snappy. I'm very happy seems like I got a new phone with a duel core cpu
Thanks to all!

Cm7 with faux 0.4.3 kernel. Everything works. Bluetooth and apns are fixed. And its 2.3.7 gingerbread

You can download an app called getril from the market it will check
you're ril(radio interface layer) to see if it matches you're baseband and if not will also allow you to change it, its not custom ril's but will insure you have the right one.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
CM7 stable with the morfic kernel is awesome! Ver. 2.3.7 and all components work fine except for small apn fallout but a hard reboot fixes that issue.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I have tried CM7 and Weapon. With CM7 I encountered problems with WiFi calling not working reliably (a hard reboot would fix this but I found myself having to do this often) and losing apns (I hear that this may be fixed now), so I finally gave up and tried Weapon G2x.
For me Weapon G2x has been rock solid and everything I need works. I have heard that some people have trouble with HDMI out at 1080p, but I have not used the HDMI port on the phone yet so cannot comment.
I have not tried EB.
I like Euroskanks CM7 kanged cherry pickings. Good stuff.

How do you like the new baseband?

There are several threads regarding the V21Y baseband, but 99% of the posts concern release dates and installation instructions. For those of you who have flashed it, how do you like it so far?
Seems to give better battery life and better GPS lock on. That's what I have experienced with it. Too bad there's no custom ROMs yet
Gps is vastly superior, so is wifi calling is perfect so far. Everything else works better fine. Since I use both on a daily basis it is a great upgrade for me. I always had RIL issues before those are totally gone now.
I miss the customization of cyanogen, but full functionally wins over little stuff
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
Don't know about the call quality, because I unfortunately have my service disabled at the moment (not being able to pay the bill tends to end in that)..
But everything else, this is by far my favorite so far. I haven't experienced any bugs that I was used to having, and GPS works far better than before (yes you can use GPS without cell service, if you don't mind not having the ability to download maps)...
Faster. Stable. And way better battery life
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
I think mine is a combination of the new baseband and Beats audio.. (if that effects the incall sound) but, if it does.. a combo of those two make my calls sound great. I used to have trouble hearing people cuz it sounded bad, but now it is better.

Did you flash the beats audio mod on stock 2.3.4? The latest worked fine or an older?
I think I flashed two. Don't think I noticed a difference on the newest one so tried to the old one. Left it at that and Now I feel like it shounds great. But it could be all in my imagination lol

Its good but its useless if I can't flash Cyanogenmod on it.
Everything is good. Just can't flash roms. First day on the stock rooted rom. Battery could be a bit better. In at 10 hours and 40% how can I improve this on the stcok rooted
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
It is so vastly superior to the old one it isn't funny. I can only speak for myself, but for the first time, I've not flashed anything since I got the leak. That's saying a lot, I used to flash 2 or 3 roms a day.

to be fair, 21e was never good to me, but 21y has been superb past several days. I miss some of the customizations of cyanogen, but I would not give up the perfect GPS, better wifi stability, and flawless wifi calling..
GPS is now equal or better than my iPhone.
Of note, my peak 3g/4g speeds are lower, I used to occasionally see a
10 megabits down on old Ril, but now with 21y I seem stuck at 5 or 6 down but ...I get those speeds in more places... And TMobile ping is always better than ATt..and att is never faster than 5.5 megabits so....draw your own conclusions

I have read a couple comments in other threads that after a few days people started having some problems and had to factory reset (or something), has this happened to anyone?
For stock only rooted it does great. I removed some bloat. I don't see better battery. I found better battery using 21e and faux's ds kernels. It is by far the best stock rom I have used. I am sure I could get better battery out of it if I changed some setting like sync. Any one have a good list of things to change, set and remove? I am very please so far. Can't wait to see some custom Roms and kernels.
Sent from a phone... do you really need to know more?
So the new baseband just has better battery and GPS lock?

Best rom for simple mobile?

I got simple mobile running on my g2x for my wife. And data seems slow it wasn't before I had to mess with apns a lot to get it to work. And the web wouldn't work unless I checked request desktop version. And the Facebook app won't load gives me unstable server or some weird ish there. I'm running eb ics 4.0.3 I believe and I tried a few other ics rom. Any help is good

Any flaws with cm7? Not too fond with it. And if you can what are some pros about cm7?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Simple mobile runs perfect on my phone, just got with them a week ago and everything works. On temasek(?)'s latest ROM.
Benefits of cm7? Lol too many to list.
cm7 or a cm7 based variant is definitely the most operable option for the g2x at the moment in terms of every day usability and stability. I don't really know why you would be particularly against using it so if you care to detail why you don't like it aside from the fact that its gingerbread based perhaps we could help you to consider juny. eb ics may well be the reason you're having the problems you're having, a lot of the ics/jb variant roms have data drop issues. if you haven't and are deadset on using an ics/jb rom, try paranoid android, kashmalaga, or the hackfest roms.
