Can anyone comment on third party app performance with Mango? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have found that 3rd party apps are lackluster in their scrolling mostly. Just wondering if anyone has noticed any difference so far? I know they said that list scrolling would be improved but im wondering if its still completely dependent on developers to use Mango coding to their advantage or whether Mango inherently improves. Eg. IMDB--app is great but it still suffers from choppy/laggy scrolling throughout the interface. Anyone?

I noticed the same issue as well, i was pretty stoked to get smooth scrolling, haha

I thought the apps had to be re-compiled and re-submitted for them to see that improvement? Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, all the apps I just tested were very smooth/responsive - including IMDB.

They could always be coded more efficiently, but Mango is bringing OS wide improvements to this. Check out the keynote day 2 video at Mix11 this year around the 1:02:00 mark I believe.
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/belfiore/04-13-11mix11.mspx?rss_fdn=Custom
The difference is going to be profound, especially since smooth scroll and responsiveness will be present while things load in the background now.

believe it or not...thats my number one thing im looking forward to in mango, for me its stability and smoothness over anything. of course the other 500+ features are pretty cool
Fast forward to 17:54 to see the feature:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Q9jiLoFM0

Definitely smoother, even with the same apps as before the update. Twitter apps are noticeably smoother when scrolling, and there's less lag when they're grabbing new data.

Everything is much faster. Love it.
BTW, is it only me or did they remove the animation when going to the start screen? I miss it.

noticed that when watching a few mango videos, hopefully it will be in the final release

Certain apps now scroll wonderfully. It was like the scrolling issues never existed. Its awesome.
But not all apps do this. I guess some of them have to be rewritten or maybe some were never just optimized to begin with.

Yeah, a lot of them scroll much better just like MS claimed. A few apps however, do not get more responsive scrolling wise. Facebook and imdb are the ones I noticed.
All the other twitter apps and things that have long lists scroll perfectly though. Great great great improvement.

Have you updated to the latest Facebook app update (2.0)? Ever since that update and Mango, scrolling has been buttery smooth, and even performance overall has just been better.

Yeah I have updated it. The first section of the app is fast and smooth. But when I go to "most recent" that is where I experience the pre-mango scrolling

Honeycomb 3.1 announcement

So we should be seeing Honeycomb 3.1 for our transformers in the near future.
Google only showed a new task switcher and adjustable widgets as two new features. Shouldn't this be called Honeycomb 3.0.1? I'm not terribly impressed... I hope they fix some major force close issues and general bugs in the next release....
As for task/memory management, I wish they added a feature that allows us to exclude apps from ever being closed. Going back to a browser and having it reload 5 tabs EVERYTIME consumes a fair amount of bandwidth and time.

I feel the same about the update, seems very underwhelming. I wanted to see new games etc but that was non existent.

We are already at 3.0.1, but I agree with you doesn't seem like too much though I do like the new features.
I don't know what the heck google is thinking, but they need to focus on building a STABLE Android OS and really dumping resources into getting apps up to par with apple.
Instead they focus on remote light switches and facial recognition gimmicks... if quality apps don't start coming soon, it won't matter what flavor of desert they put out as it will be weak.

I'm sure they don't... I'm not sure who's giving them ideas like this, but when I upgrade my browser on my PC, it's not a Windows 7.1 update... with google, something as trivial as resizing widgets (which has been possible via 3rd party apps for a while) seems to qualify as a substantial upgrade.
Oh well, whatever keeps people excited.

Stop and think for a moment. They are releasing a new build of an OS. I'm sure that the resizing of Widgets is not the only thing they are doing. I would be willing to bet there will be plenty of fixes in the update.

Yes, little things. This should be a 3.0.1 release. The USB host thing... my Archos was using USB devices and it was running froyo! LOL
I'm looking forward to 3.1 anyways. I hope it's more stable than 3.0.

Some notable updates
- An updated home button, while still appearing the same, will now take the user to the most recently used home screen panel when pressed in an app instead of always taking the user to the center panel. (my pet peeve so far).
- PTP will allow users to connect a digital camera directly to a tablet so that the tablet can import all of the camera's photos.
- Web pages can now be saved for offline viewing, and the browser also offers faster zooming and support for hardware accelerated plug-ins.
A simple feature request. Allow us to choose which folders we wish to display in the Gallery. I'm unable to use it as all the album art from my music as well as bitmaps from apps really clog it up.

I think it's fairly good. USB host thing is cool, and resizable Widgets and a better browser good too. Also "UI transitions are improved throughout the system and across the standard apps. The Launcher animation is optimized for faster, smoother transition to and from the Apps list." So should overall feel smoother and no ui lag.
Honeycomb's pretty solid as it is and with these changes even better. Not sure why people are so disappointed really, what did you expect to be added?

This blocks music appearing in the official app. PowerAMP and other 3rd party apps can't find music on the microsd in Honeycomb.

I really hope they fixed the market app. That is my biggest pet peeve. You scroll down for 30 seconds, click on an app to check it out, click "back", and now you are back at the top, have to scroll way down again. When trying to find apps to install it is a huge pain.

I'm pretty sure 3.1 will support hardware acceleration, that to me is a HUGE improvement. Flash rendering should be a whole lot better. I already think Honeycomb is a very solid OS and the new features are exciting. As long as they keep rolling out updates I'll be happy.
I must admit what was announced at IO was underwhelming, but who cares? Are you used to Apple esque keynotes that praise "new" features that have been available on other OS's for years?

Hey I was just curious as to why you would recommend this over the stock browser (cm7 nightly 75). I used dolphin back when I think it was in version 3 and although impressive I didn't really see the value in it. Just wondering if anyone can provide some user experiences. Thank you so much!
Ummmm, yeeeeeah I would recommend it without a doubt. It's has the speed of a 4g stock browser i would say even on 3g and it loads pages very quickly.
I'm not impressed. It is definitely better than the stock browser which is horrid - lack of features and loads extremely slow. However when compared to my daily browser, Opera, it feels gauky.
Compared to opera it loads just as fast, displays flash just as well, webpages look just as good. But the app itself just doesn't look good.
Dolphin has the tab bar on top, which makes it easier to access, but it isn't done well. I would rather have them remove that and use the tab page they have that is similar to sense previews. It takes up too much space and is IMO ugly.
The guesture menus are a great idea. And they are easy to bring up. Again, however, I don't like how they look. Either they should take up the whole screen rather than just part. Or have a transparent background so that they are "overlaying" the webpages.
Also, I had it FC on me a couple times while loading pages and changing settings. Not an issue for me as its beta.
The one thing I really like about it over any other browser I've used it that you can change the user agent in settings easily! Opera you can, but you have to edit the opera:config and its a pain.

[Q] Tablet super laggy and slow already...and it's pretty new

Hey guys,
My gTab is only about 2months old and it's already behaving like old equipment. the boot time is more than a minute. Many applications take a good ten seconds to load. The new Google+ FCs each time I tap the message or places button. The Dolphin browser takes forever to load.
I'm running CM 7.0.3 with pershoot's .32 kernel to fix the WiFi issues. Any suggestions as to how I can get the lag out of this beast and whip it to shape?
Ginger behaves like this, especially cm7.
Do you have widgets running? I had a weather widget once that made my tablet run laggy. As soon as I took it off pow!!! Back to normal
Well, yes. I have WeatherBug running, along with a few others. Also, my Google+ repeatably crashes each time I try to tap on the pencil icon to enter a status message. Is this known? Also, does any1 recommend upping to the 7.1 CM?
I'm considering heading back to Froyo for full speed.

I just found that using my fake location make G+ work. It's a location issue.
As I mentioned before, I think going back to Froyo is the only way to get good performance. I just tried the Brilliant Corners Froyo-based rom. Since Vegantab 5.1.1 is pretty much done with (no one is supporting it or issuing updates), this seems the best option if I wanted something more mainstream with proper driver support.
I'll be honest, there's stuff I miss from CM7 (particularly the Gingerbread Bluetooth stack and flawless netflix), but as a whole the device seems much snappier.
It was a bit of a headache changing bootloaders to 1.2, but it looks like a lot of more interesting developments are happening on that side of the loaders now anyway.
Can you point me in the direction to get this new ROM? I'm not interested in BlueTooth or Netflix on the device.
Some 'construction-type' or resource gathering games are persistent after you exit them (Bug Village, Paradise Islang, Gangsta) so the game can can give you an update while you aren't playing. I've found that killing those apps really helps performance and doesn't affect game play when you launch again. I've also seen an increase after killing some weather apps, but others don't seem to affect performance at all.

G'day champ,
I understand what you're saying, I also had these problems. I don't tend to like Maxthon, Firefox is also still in what feels like an early beta stage.
I've moved towards Dolphin Browser HD, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I'd provide more info, but I'm in a rush.
But let me know how it goes for you, as I'd love to hear your feedback on it.
Are we not liking Chrome, either?
yeah agree , before it was good but now i use chrome beta!
I got ics but I don't have any problems with my browser .
There's nothing wrong with the ics browser on my phone, and I think it's better because it has more functions.
ICS browser works fine for me on my nosense VI rom.
i tried chrome too. not really my cup of tea. im ok with dolphin though. you guys probably forgot what the gingerbread stock browser was like. I jus moved from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich and the difference is huge. i mean this new browser is ok, but i just wish it were more responsive and smooth with the rendering and pinch and zoom
I'm sure it'll be better after official release guys... And chrome is decent but I'm holding untill its released from beta

Yes thank you I have been having this problem too. I have only noticed it in Yahoo! Mail though. I have uninstalled it yahoo mail though. I have a full release version of ICS too. You would think they would check that with such popular programs as Yahoo Mail.
Thanks for the info. I've flashed a few ics roms & every1 of them has an unpleasant browsing experience compared to stock GB, especially on the desktop of utube. Does dolphin HD scroll & pinch to zoom smoothly on the desktop utube? I'd like to know b4 I reflash again for the 20th time. Thanx in advance

I'm using Chrome Beta, and has so many bugs. I use Opera 11.62 for my computer's browser, but Opera on mobile doesn't like HTML 5. So, I still use Chrome even though it kind of sucks.
Yes it does.
Though this may work better in devices with hardware buttons such as the Sensation (I wonder if it does):
There's no standard menu button and you have to hunt for it in each application, as in all of ICS
The menu "...." icon, in Google's finest new style, is unintuitive and most often hidden
Can't search the page or perform a menu action withotu abandoning my current scroll position
But I've had even worse issues:
I can't find where can I change my User-Agent so that I don't get the crappy "mobile" sites from everybody; I haven't paid 500 € on a large screen phone to get crippled versions
I can't find where can I add custom search engines
Screen estate is often wasted with yet another obnoxious toolbar made of obnoxious Google style icons (i.e. ugly, monochrome, abstract and unintuitive)
And that's just from 5 minutes of use. Back to Opera Mobile — I suggest you do the same; it's faster, has better features and a much better UI (well, anything has a much better UI compared to Google's stuff since Google+).
I've choosen for myself "ICS Browser+".

Scroll lag / stutter?

Hi,
I've noticed that some apps run very smooth, but others can lag for no reason.
For example Play Store. When you open Play Store and start scrolling to the bottom of the home screen (lets say 3-4 rows of apps per swipe down) it lags a lot. It's nowhere close to being smooth. Even when you're at the bottom so everything has loaded, it still isn't smooth when scrolling up and down using normal scroll speed.
Reddit is Fun is also an app that has lots of lag / stutters for me.
Does anyone else experience this?

no. i haven't yet experienced any (major) lag in any app (have Play Store obviously and Reddit is Fun installed).. currently on 1.13.401.1.. also as some apps are smooth for you and others not, i would say blame the apps, but lag and smoothness are such subjective terms that I can only say I don't see any lag.

Do you have a password manager such as LastPass installed? They can cause lag issues if you have the accessability option set to fill passwords in apps.

Thanks for your reply.
It's strange to me that the top of the line hardware can't even manage to make scrolling a default app like Play Store feel smooth. Even when viewing text comments within the Reddit is Fun app isn't always smooth. That's just scrolling text, not even loading images.
I guess I have to deal with it then. I expected more for this price range.
It's not the device. It's just poorly written apps. Compare for instance Facebook app and metal on older devices. They do the same thing but the experience is night and day. This a fairly new device so updates will come but playstore always stutters no matter the phone. It's been like that for years and I tried maaaaany devices
yes it has absolutely nothing to do with the hardware/device. like @mlodykaras said, it just poor coding.
Okay thanks for all your feedback guys!
Let's hope Google will learn how to write applications for Android correctly :silly:
Well to come back to this. The lag is just insane, there's no other way to put it. When I compare scrolling through the same text with my old Lenovo K3 Note, the U11 lags and stutters all the time while the Lenovo K3 Note doesn't stutter at all. That's just scrolling through text!
I've noticed that if you change the Interactive governor to Performance, the U11 doesn't lag anymore. But this isn't great for the CPU and for battery life of course.
Video 1 shows a 1080p 60fps Twitch stream. You can notice there are some spikes and overall it's close to the green line.
Video 2 shows the same 1080p 60fps Twitch stream. You can notice there are no spikes and overall it's not even close to the green line.
Video 3 shows the same comment thread in Reddit is Fun. I start by using the Performance governor and you can see me switch to the Interactive governor a little later. It's clear there are a ton of spikes using Interactive.
This really shouldn't be happening on such an expensive device.
I've even reverted back to stock using RUU, fresh install no restoring done. Same issues.
I have also noticed few apps other than play store. I am from India and some apps like BookMyShow & Inbox from Gmail stutters and there are always some frame drops. I tested BookMyShow in One plus 5, it runs very smoothly. Idk why it is like this and whether it'll be corrected or not.
My old debloated Galaxy S6 had smoother scrolling in apps in comparison with HTC10 and U11. HTC should adjust some kernel settings ot OS to fix this, it is very annoying. I really hope it will be fixed with Oreo update.

I don't think it would get fixed with oreo update as its not something that requires an overall new version of android.
Had it supposed to be changed, it would've changed by HTC in those 2-3 updates came out till now after the launch.
Problem with HTC is they do not take or even consider feedbacks unless there is some major major glitch.
For HTC this scrolling stutter and overblown of highlights and light sources in camera is just minor issues and they don't care about it.
On the other hand, there is google which takes every feedback seriously and tries to improve the Pixels on the software level as much as the software can.
