[Q] Market Downloading Problems? - Milestone XT720 General

i was downloading the game Samurai Vengeance II, but when was installing, an error : " Unknown Error - 18" came out. Any ideas whats this error??

I had that issue a few times when downloading games on 2.2. ROMs. The simple fix is to unmount your sd card, download the app and then remount after. There is a more complicated way to fix the issue altogether I think.

It is a well known error with froyo. Connect your phone to computer in usb-mass storage mode. Make sure you computet can see the hidden files. Open your sdcard and open the .androidsecure folder (the period before the folder means it is hidden). Look for a file listed smnn...something, it is the only file in there that would look out of place. Delete it and unmount from your computer. Then redownload and it should install. Google unknown error 18 and it will give you the specific file name. Been awhile since I had to do that, so I can't remember it exactly.

Yep. Delete that and you are good to go. If you flash a new rom or move in and out of your backups and are using native Froyo app2sd, it will come back and you'll have to delete it again.
What rom are you running? If it is one of Kahl's, then you can use Link2sd or app2ext and avoid that problem completely.

[Q] newb problem How to rezip a rom

I have googled this alot and have not found any helpful results. I have unziped a rom I like to remove some .apks and add some of the ones I always find myself re-installing. I also have been playing with the build.prop, and the framework. I'm not trying to steal anyones work I just want to have a fresh version of this rom when I go back to it (which I do about once a week). my intent would be to flash, enter my wifi and google passwords, and start using it. I know I can just do a backup and reinstall that, but this has been helpful with my trying to understand how to build a rom and what makes it work. My question being what are the steps to rezip this rom into a flashable update. I have tried dsixda kitchen with no luck, just reziping it, and some other dumb methods. What am I missing here? plz help thank you.
also don't think it matters but this is for a o.g. evo
we got same problem, i edited a working rom for galaxy y (adding and removing some apk) then i was like huh??? what to do next, tried zipping it but doesnt work. hope.someone will reply here.
Sent from my Nokia 3310 running ICS
The problem is the signature verification of the ROM. We sign the ROMS when we create them.
No idea what custom recovery you might use but there should be an option to disable it before you try flashing.
I hope this helps.
No I have cwm and I disabled signature verification, it still starts fine says updating than immediately says its failed

I also just have it in the folders it unzips in then inside a folder and I just zip that folder is that not right I don't know lol hope someone can help

That's what's wrong. You can't zip an entire ROM as a folder then zip that folder. Doesn't work that way.
Open a ROM. See how its packed. You'll have a system folder, data, sdcard perhaps. But that's how you package it.
This isn't as easy as you think. You can't just hack stuff up and expect it to work if you don't do it properly.

No I'm leaving the folders inside the ROM intact. everything is in a folder with all the folders ( data folder, META-INF folder, system folder ect..., and the boot image inside that single folder and then I am ziping all those items in the folder into a zip. I just can't get it to flash it starts then after a second of installation it says aborted.

After reading this more I'm still understanding that the data and meta, system folders are in a folder, then that folder is zipped.
This is incorrect way to package it. The data, meta, system etc needs to be zipped all together as one. Not in a folder that is zipped. Make sense? Hope this explains more.
I'll try that I guess Mabry them all being in a folder is the prob I hope thanks man

just tryed to flash it and now after it almost finished flashing I got
"update sdcard/romname/blah blah. failed"(status 6)
does that mean anything to you besides that I messed something up?

Your welcome. Every phone works a little differently but get used to having problems and fixing them. Part of the struggle. And to me the fun. I love troubleshooting.
i think just open the zip (not unzip it)..
when dialog box open,,you can choose the apk or the others you want to delete..
if you want add somthing to zip,,just open the folder location you want add that,,and than drag n drop the file(s)..
thats it..
than close the dialog box..
winrar will ask you to save the change or not,,choose,,save..
its work for me..
P.S.
use the rom by yourself..
as your personal rom..
if you want to publish it,,ask the permit from the devs..

Help please! Phone wont boot. Need adb expert.

Hey all. I did something silly and deleted a file in system/bin folder while troubleshooting a problem. I made a backup of the file before deleting it in sdcard/download but my phone wont boot so I can copy the backup file back to system/bin. I am able to get my phone into download mode and I believe I could copy the file via adb. However I do not know how to get adb to recognize the phone in download mode. I type...
adb devices
and it states "List of devices attached" and there is nothing under the list but when I plug my phone via USB it shows "SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device" in device manager so I know my pc is recognizing it. I have used adb before with batch files like 1click root and things like that so I know its just me not knowing the right commands to get my device recognized.
Any and all help is appreciated! I just need to copy 1 file from sdcard/download to system/bin and I would assume it would boot back up with no problem!
Thanks!
do u have cwm installed?
I just installed CWM v5.5.0.4 via download mode using this method. http://www.theandroidsoul.com/skyrocket-root-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery/
So now that I am in CWM I am trying to mount things like /system and it shows an error mounting /sdcard and I get that error messaging for mounting all except mount usb storage which works great. I was however able to get the file off my phone but now how do I get the file back to system/bin?
Yes.. you can (and really should) flash CWM from download mode via your PC/laptop. A few weeks ago I did something very similar and soft-bricked my SR by renaming an in-use file (framework-res.apk)... I also only had 3e, so couldn't just restore a nandroid or flash a rom zip. Go to the Dev section and find the thread by Copperhed ("Root the ATT SGH-I727 Skyrocket..."). read through the OP and follow instruction exactly. You will be Odin3 flashing just the CWM recovery partition... this will NOT trip your flash counter. If you are already rooted, you should retain root... if not, you can root via his OP. After you have CWM recovery, there's a way you can mount the sdcard so you can transfer files between your PC and SR... then, you can put the sbin file back and see if it reboots fine... if not, with CWM installed, you can flash (via zip.. not Odin) any rom/kernel/modem zip package you want.
Even though I installed CWM from a different source I thanked you anyways DoctorQMM! Now that I have CWM installed how to I transfer the file from my pc to the system/bin directory? I have been able to mount usb storage and it show up as a drive on my pc but when I mount /system nothing shows up. What am I missing?
Thanks for all your help! I am almost there! ^_^
hey, I recommended it first . Seriously though, download a kernel from the dev section, any kernel. Open it up in winrar, winzip, etc... and delete everything except the system folder. Now take the bin file u copied to ur computer and put it in a folder called bin. Put this bin in the kernel zip inside the system folder. Now delete everything else in the system folder. Put this file on a microsd, slip it in ur phone and flash it through cwm. this will put the bin back, and allow u to reboot phone
JDub... PM cdshepherd.... he's the one who shared with me you can use the mounts and storage option in cwm (then click "mount USB storage")... then you can copy files between your sd and computer without having to do what I did (which was pull external sd out of SR, mount in micro adapter, plugged into laptop and loaded files on the sd... then put sd back in phone.. booted into CWM and flashed the rom zip I put on there). Yes.. you are close! If you can't get that one file back to sbin on root, you could try to flash a stock rom/kernel zip (KK1 or LA3)... you only need to put that rom/kernel zip on your sd or external sd so CWM will see it.
icenight89 your right you provided the inspiration so I thanked you as well and appreciate the explanation. I will perform it now and see where I get. Let me understand this correctly in steps..
1. Download a kernel, any kernel.
2. Open it up, delete everything except the system folder.
3. Create a folder named bin and put the backed up file in the bin folder.
4. Delete everything else within the system folder except the bin file and bin folder. So it should be /system/bin/xxx.file
5. Put this on a microsd card and flash it through cwm. I assume I do this by selecting "install zip from sdcard?"
Thanks for the continual help! ^_^
I am having trouble with the kernel part. I downloaded a i727 kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340114&page=2. Opened it up and it has boot.img in it. Am I missing something?
Alright. I downloaded the kernel from here http://www.mediafire.com/?85g701ate11zdc9. The kernel contained a folder named system and deleted everything else. I then added the folder bin and added the backed up file I deleted to the system/bin/ directory. I then mounted usb storage via CWM and put the new .zip in there. I then selected "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from internal sd card" located the zip file and selected "yes." I then get the following read outs...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
--Installing: /emmc/sgh-1727-skyrocket-att-original-kernel_2.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
So it looks like it is not installing. Am I doing something wrong?
wrong kernel, download this one:
http://faux.androidro.ms/sky-kernel-010b1.zip
delete everything from in there except system folder, including boot.img, and follow instructions again, should work

download a rom from Dev section. Doesn't matter which one. Try silvers rom you'll like it. Mount USB storage in cwm. Copy rom to sd. Eject SD from computer. Go back to main menu in cwm. Wipe data/factory reset. Wipe cache partition. Wipe dalvik cache(under advanced in cwm) format system under mounts and storage. Back to main menu in cwm. Install zip from sdcard. Choose zip(rom) you just placed on your SD. Flash it. Reboot device. Enjoy. And make a nandroid after it boots for the first time.

Did you make a cwm backup of rom you were using prior to this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
No, I did not make a nandroid backup. I had to install CWM from download mode and then I was able to get into CWM all without booting.
I appreciate your time in writing a solution however I am not interested in wiping everything and starting from scratch which is what your proposing. I simply deleted a file in system/bin named mediaserver so system/bin/mediaserver. When I rebooted the phone would not boot. I made a backup of the mediaserver before deleting it and placed it in the sdcard/download folder. All I need to do is copy the mediaserver file back to system/bin/ directory and phone should boot backup as if nothing ever happened. That's is how I understand it. Its just missing a file and I know what the file is and I have the file I just need to figure out how to copy it back over to where it belongs.
I do know how to install stock and other roms but after spending numerous hours on my first phone, SGS Captivate, to experience others roms like Darky's Rom the end result was that it was not worth me having to keep up with all the releases and bug fixes, loading in working kernels to make things work correctly and the like. I would rather just stick with stock. Its just a personal preference.
If anyone knows how to copy a file from my pc or from internal sdcard to my Skyrocket using Download mode or ClockWorkMod using any means but without wiping my data please let me know. Eventually if I do not get a solution I will be forced to revert back to the stock rom but I would rather leave that as a last resort.
I look forward to any other suggestions!
Thank you!
Without the ability to push/pull with adb your running out of solutions. I do hope that you get your skyrocket up and running no matter what method you use. And I do hope that someone with the ability comes along to help you. My way is prob the easy way out. If it were me ide cut my losses. Start from scratch, and try to figure out where my prob starts. Good news is there is a great community with plenty of help. Good luck mate.

[Q] Update.zip to restore apps?

hey guys i just wanted to ask something. Its possible to install apps via update.zip immediately after flashing ROM rite? I searched XDA and found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917922
but im not sure how to do it and anyway the meaupload link for that download is down. Btw since all my app data together is more than the data partition of the phone (>200mb), is it possible to make the apps link to my second partition of sd card via update.zip script or something? Hope u guys can help me!!
Does anyone know how to do this? if possible i think it would save a lot of time as when reinstalling via titanium backup. this way would be more hassle-free if possible.
So no one knows how to do this? ok then nvr mind i guess it must be too hard or something....
Why not just use an ext partition and app2ext?
Creating an update.zip is possible, but it's not very convenient. Esp keeping it up-to-date.

srry if im asking a really dumb qn but does that mean that if u install apps to ur ext2 via link2sd, u dont have to install them again on new ROM?
App2ext is different from link2sd (but they both use ext partition.
In link2sd you usually create /sd-ext/link2sd folder, reboot and then use the Link2SD app to manually move apps to /sd-ext/link2sd. This is good if you want to mix apps on SD and internal.
In app2ext (which I'm suggesting) you instead create /sd-ext/app folder on sdcard and reboot. All your installed apps will be moved there from internal memory and new apps will be installed there automatically. They will still be there after you factory reset or install a new ROM. (To preserve application data you need something else such as titanium backup)

You can learn by studying the gapps package used by CM or any other update.zip. The "magic" is inside the META-INF folder. META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script has the installer commands that do things like mount /system and extract files, set permissions etc. The final step is to sign the update. OpenRecovery allows unsigned updates, but you should sign anyway even using testkeys--it forces a sha1 verification of the zip files to detect corruption before the update is applied.

oooh i can kinda understand the code in the updater-script. for eg: ui_print to print to screen, package_extract_dir to extract files to the directory in whatever folder u state. but what is the update-binary file?
The update-binary is the program that reads and executes updater-script.

I just copy it. It's probably in the AOSP source somewhere but I've never looked.

[Q] Is it ok to delete apk files after installation? Please read further.

Hi. I just found out that apk files are kept in the device after installation of the app.
I just recently downloaded a file explorer app and I found out that the apk files of the free games which I downloaded and installed from android market are kept in this folder:
/mnt/asec (I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace)
There are individual folders for each game, and in each folder are a lib folder and the apk file. For example:
Fruit Ninja folder (which is found in mnt/asec folder) contains a lib folder and an apk file.
Fruit Slice folder (which is also found in mnt/asec folder) contains a lib folder and an apk file.
My question is, is it ok to delete these apk files? Will the games still work?
Also, can I send these apk files to someone else via bluetooth so they may download the apps without having to visit android market?
yeah you can delete the apk file after installing any app for it to still function, I do it all the time. Yes you can send the apk file to your friend so they can install it. If you're still cautious, try doing a trial run with one apk file...send it to your friend first, then delete, see if it works.
The .apk files are like setup files for windows. Once installed, you don't need the apk, especially if you are backing up with Titanium or similar backup program.
follow up question
Hi. Thanks guys.
Is everything from the android market ".apk"? Is it possible that some have a different extension? I downloaded a dictionary app, I can't be sure but I think it's a .zip file.
Thank you.
pakattack
I tried to delete the apk file. It cannot be deleted.
However, I copied it to my sd card, uninstalled the app, re-installed it using the one already in my sdcard, and it installed just fine.
I still want to be able to delete the apk file that is in the system though (/mnt/asec).
Any ideas or do I just have to deal with it?

Yes, you can delete the APK after installation. But the APKs in /system/app/ need to stay where they are to function appropriately

I accidentally deleted bluetooth. I flashed(?) the stock recovery found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/pure-xl/general/twrp-recovery-root-blu-pure-xl-allview-t3269447 and had no luck. Do you mean you uninstalled one of the Bluetooth apps in System > Advanced Settings > Apps > All?
If so, please use some sort of root explorer app (you have to be rooted first) to navigate to either /system/app/Bluetooth or /system/priv-app/Amigo_Bluetooth and install whichever .apk that appears to be not installed. I believe this should fix your issue.

Alright so the .apk file is missing from system/apps/Bluetooth. The one in amigo_bluetooth is still there

Interesting.
I've uploaded my /system/app/Bluetooth folder here. Could you please download that, extract the folder inside to somewhere, and either:
Push the folder via adb using the command adb push Bluetooth /system/app/ while your command prompt/terminal is in the same directory where you extracted the "Bluetooth" folder (cd DRIVE:\your\directory\path\Bluetooth (Windows) or ~/your/directory/path/Bluetooth (Linux) ).
or
Transfer the extracted "Bluetooth" folder to either your microSD or a USB Drive, plug it into your phone and move the folder to /system/apps using your root file explorer app.
Finally, install the Bluetooth.apk inside (which I'm assuming is the one you uninstalled since it is missing).
Let me know how it goes, thanks!

Glad it worked!
Do I creat app folder?
I don't have a /system/app/ folder, just a /system folder with subfolders, none are called app.

Can you check again? Make sure you go to your system folder from your phone's root directory. It should contain almost all of the default apps installed on your phone when it came out of the box (with the rest of it being in priv-apps).
I have the exact same problem as the OP - I tried downloading the said file but my phone says the file is corrupt - can someone please send an updated version?
Same problem, file corrupt.
Bluetooth got erased because the system detected that the app was sending sms by itself (or so it said) and thus deleted it. I have the same problem as the one above, the file seems to be corrupt and can't install the .apk
Please, if there is another way to solve this say so.
Same problem...
I have the same problem as above, my phone detected the SMS permission and said it might cost you money and recommend an uninstall. I never realised I would be able to uninstall Bluetooth without being rooted but it did it anyway - maybe it's an android bug?
Anyway, I tried downloading your Bluetooth.apk and reinstalling but it said file corrupt.
Any help would be much appreciated! Sounds like this is a bug that's been going around...

following this thread will allow you to reload the factory rom to default settings, including all factory apps and files. this is a "OEM reset"
to the fullest, bringing phone back to factory sent condition. (be prepared to do a few ota updates when done)
pay attn and read the whole thread (Yes I know its long) especially when it talks about SP Flash tool...

Thanks for the info.
I dont know yet if a simple apk via adb could fix the problem here instead of flashing the complete device
Fixed
Hey, I had a look elsewhere and found a forum on the Lenovo website (can't post link here), hopefully this will work for you too.
Basically you want to go to Settings>Apps>Reset app settings and that'll do the trick.
Good luck!
