[Q] Move Power Button? - Verizon Droid Charge

Is it possible to eliminate the power button / move it to another button?
One of the biggest (pretty much only) hardware complaint for me is the power button on the side of the Charge.
I am use to having the power button on top of the phone.
I am always hitting the power button by mistake. What a pain.
It would be nice to move it to the search button.
Please help, Thx!

Your take on the perfect (Android) button placement?

Back button on the far left? Second from the right?
Power button on the top? On the side?
Softkeys or real buttons? On-screen (a la Honeycomb) or off-screen?
Do we need a search button at all?
A lot of sweat, blood, and saliva has been spilled over it. [citation needed]
Now it's *your* turn to join the fray!
If you were to design *the* perfect Android phone, what buttons would you give it? And where? And what would it be like?
Or maybe you don't even care about how the buttons are placed, as long as the manufacturers could just agree and they all make devices with similarly-placed buttons?
Me? I'd personally place the buttons sorted by their frequency of use, starting from the leftmost to the rightmost (from the most natural to the most awkward for my thumb to press). Back button - Home - Menu - Search, from left to right.
But I see how this would be an issue to left-handed people, so I'd settle for Back and Home button in the center, and Menu and Search flanking them. That's fair enough I think.
I would love to experiment with placing the back button on the top of the left side of the phone (indexable for right-handed people, and thumbable for left-handed), but I can see how this is not for everyone I'm not even sure I'd like it.
However, if manufacturers could just agree on the placement of the buttons, that would be good enough for me.
Whether it's hardware buttons or touchscreen buttons ain't an issue to me.
I'd place the power button top center (index-fingerable).
I find volume buttons useful only during calls, so I'd like to have them function as volume buttons only during calls. During idle/homescreen/any other scenario, they would become two (customizable!) shortcut buttons (a la Blackberry). <-- if only one thing from my dream phone is manifested, I hope it's this one. Two wasted (and often pressed by accident) buttons, turned into something more useful.
If I wanna be detailed about it, I guess the volume buttons should be on the center of the right side of the phone, so one of them can be customized as shutter/camera button (although I wont use it as such, preferring to tap the screen instead).
How's yours?
I think power button on top right side, lock button under, or like you mentioned having them function as volume buttons during call. Do completely away with search button, add in maybe a camera button where my search is, but make it where you have to hold it for a second so you do not enable it accidently. Have a designated capture button for the camera, that also functions as a silent/vibrate setting out of the camera.

Different people, different preference. Perhaps a default Home key, + 2 customizable keys where the user can choose their preferred key to be assigned.
I'd have the Search Key and Back Key always on the screen.
Menu key shouldn't even be on the phone. That should force app developer to design and create user interface with menu function incorporated in their app for consistency purpose.
I would love to have buttons on the back of the device
Now that I'm getting used to honeycomb (and apps developed for it), i can assure you that the search and menu buttons are not really necessary. i'd want a device with a back button on the left, the home button in the middle and a end call / power button on the right. that's it. oh i actually forgot a volume rocker at the usual spot at the side of the device.

Hmm.. No search button.. Interesting.
I find it useful to search things from the homescreen without having to open a particular app first (be it Market, Springpad, Contacts, Evernote, etc.), but I can surely live without it

Oh, you even made the pic!
Your opinion is interesting. I can easily see why the search button isn't really necessary, but the menu button? Substituted by long-press, I presume? (I never tried Honeycomb for any longer than 2 minutes )
I'm beginning to get glimpses of what ICS is gonna be like Keep it coming, guys! Let's crowdsource this!
Thanks to the moderator who moved my thread. I was hesitant on where to put my thread, but finally decided on the "General" forum, even though my OP contains questions, because I thought it was more of a "discussion" thread instead of a particular question trying to uncover a particular answer (which is what Q&A usually is)

[MOD][ICS] use search as power button

hello everyone, here is a mod which will let you use your search button as power button. this package is created for those who have broken power button
by applying this mod you can use the search button to lock your device or to get the power menu
as the search button is capacitive touch button you cannot use it to wake your screen but you can use your volume button to wake your screen
today in almost every custom rom there is a option for waking mobile by pressing volume key
download
Surely will save someone's broken power. I tried, it works, and I will include it in next version of my ROM.
Good use for useless button! Yay!
looking forward on your next release
This may not belong here, but I thought if anyone knew it would be you... Is there a way to re-map the menu button to pop up recents instead of menu, and then menu on long press?

Nexus S 4g - Disable broken power button?

I've already read through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596085 and used this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1524858 for remapping my search button to my power button, along with using volume for wake. I have done both of these, and that works just fine.
But, my problem is a little different.
My original power button didn't just stop working, it is actually malfunctioning. Meaning that the power button is being hit at random times, even when I don't press it (or the search button which is now my power button). It is extremely annoying and difficult to use the phone.
Does anyone know of a way to disable the power button completely? I'll settle to using search for off and volume buttons for wake, but I need a way to disable the original power button. The button remapper app from the thread above includes a way to remap or disable every button, except the original power button.
Thanks for your help
It says it all in the second link you posted. Read it all.

No.
Like I said, I want to DISABLE the power button completely, because it's malfunctioning. I have ALREADY remapped it to the search key, but the original power button keeps pressing itself, turning the screen on and off, bringing up the boot menu, etc.
The button remapper app allows you remap or disable every button EXCEPT the power button. So while you can remap search to be power, you couldn't remap power to be search (or in my case, disable power completely).
Anyone?
You would have to physically disable the button yourself.
I don't think its possible to fully power off your phone, but what you can do is map the volume up or down buttons as a wake key. I myself want to do this and am still searching for the solution, but if you want to take a crack at it:
The file buttons you want to edit should be in here. somewhere(system/user/keylayout) Root explorer can help you edit the layout without changing the format. That's as far as I can take you for now

[Fix]Power Button Not Working[LG][Otimus Net][P690]

Hello guys,as our LG ON[P690] is a OLD device, now I've started facing some problems with my Power key, Volume DOWN key, and sometimes Back key. All these keys don't respond on my device. Facing too much of problems when it comes to Power key because i cant even lock the device nor could wake up the screen when its locked! Too much of battery gets drained when the screen stays awake! some how i found something for this problem. Wish to share with you all too..
Here is a mod that remaps your search button and makes it a power button and your power button as search button. It works on all Andro vs. i.e GB,ICS,JB,KK. As far as our device is concerned it works on GB,ICS n JB too..
So here is the link to the thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634368&highlight=search+as+power
