Great Combination: Swipepad and Folder Organizer! - Android General

Thought I would pass this tip on, for anyone interested.
After trying numerous methods of app organization and launching, I have settled on an excellent solution - Swipepad and Folder Organizer, in combination. I use Folder Organizer to organize all my apps into 20 folders, each of which I can then access at any time (from within apps, or from anywhere on the phone) with Swipepad, by setting each of 20 Folder Organizer folders as a SwipePad link.
See the attached screenshot. Swipepad lets you "pop up" the customized pad at any time, no matter what the phone is doing. This provides real multi-tasking.
I also use Swipepad's MoreSpace add-on to add more customized pads, and to increase the number of slots per pad.
Two excellent programs, which combine very well, although neither is free. (I have no connection with either, other than as a user).

Om love Swipepad too -- it's so cool and easy!

I own both apps.
Unfortunately, on my MIUI INC, trying to launch any app from Swipepad freezes the whole phone. I guess it's my fault for running an exotic configuration.

And now, I find that Swipepad will break any third party screen brightness apps/widgets, so you will only be able to control screen brightness via stock android controls.
I have tried to get the dev to address this, but he does not seem interested in doing so.

The picture is from an earlier version of Swipepad, before the pads became circular.
To customize a portal image, create a Folder Organizer folder with the icon and label you want. Then link the portal to a "shortcut" of the link to that Folder Organizer folder.

PPL - Pocket Programming Language..... and the *fruity theme*

This IP lawyer has something interesting to say.
And you can get the theme from his page
After launching the theme (by the way, it's VERY EASY, just put it in a folder in your wizard), everything works except the banner clock just show "0". Wondering if you get the same on your wm6.
Also, it would be nice if the calender icon can display the actual date and the clock icon can display the actual time.
Cool but also here the time is 0 0
Very cool app. Looks pretty good and that without needing to install the application. I did try a wizbar adv iphone skin once, which had a lot more features.
But anyway a nice prog to play around with.
could you remap those icon with the config.ini file?
i tried, but most mappings still point to the setting i have on the "Stock" icon.
wondering if anyone here know the PPL and interested to further develop the application. you can download the program for free from the official homepage here: http://arianesoft.ca/index.php
I'm going to look into what I can change with it. The whole deal is fairly cool, but I hate the lag when switching to the "lock" screen. We'll see what we can come up with.

I don't know if you've noticed yet but you can indeed remap the icons with the config.ini file. Simply rename the extension so that it is config.txt, and inside it the various buttons and their paths are shown. Edit those paths the the desired program's location on your phone, then rename the config.txt file back into config.ini
Something I'd like to ask: Can we change the time at the top of this app? I believe that it's just the wrong time zone, since it is 8:44 here and the app shows 3:44
Cool app.
Time shows nothing here though (just 0 0)

Organizing Apps in folders ?

Hey people, i have been looking under tree and rock to finde some sort of way to organize Apps in to folders, in the main menu. With no luck so far.
I am i just blind and stupid or have Android made the same mistake as apple did with no way of organizing applications (albiet, appels problem is a bit bigger than Android's).
Anything to help me keep my Main Menu Organized ??
Kind Regards

"main menu" being application launcher drawer/cube? Or home screen?
Stock application launcher drawer/cube doesn't have the option, and I fail to see why anyone would need such an option, given that -
1) Home screen supports folders.
2) There are plenty of apps that allow grouping applications in "folders" of some kind (virtual ones) on the home screen.
Your "main menu" is the home screen(s), not the application drawer.
How about 'Apps Organizer' from the market.
- You can set up categories
- Apps can be in multiple categories
- Assign custom or predefined icons to these
- Both widget and shortcut support to put these categories on your home screens
- Fave apps so they stick to the top in the folders
- Optionally have all folders/categories as subfolder from 1 main folder. Now that cleans up everything into a single icon.
It's a lifesaver if you use a ton of apps and want to stay organized imho.
nice apps organizer
for me it has been FolderOrganizer by Fabio Collini for quite some time...
After trying every app organizer I could find I settled on "tag home" to fix this problem. You can create tabs in the launcher, sort the apps by tab, prioritize the items in the tab sort them, have an app under multiple tabs, (easier than remembering if gmail is in internet or communication) and you can shortcut the tags onto the desktop as folders. plus, it's free in the market.
Just my 2 cents, and that's about all my advice is worth....

I am also looking for an efficent solution! But i think we have to wait until apple releases its OS4.0, which will be able to organize apps.
Then suddenly there will be apps developed for android who do the same thing. Its sad, that it has to be this way...

Why would you think that? There was Advanced Launcher for 1.6 that did this, and many home alternatives that do this. It's harder for rosie because it is closed source.
PS. You can make a folder on the home screen for a long time and dump applications into it, just like the magical iPhone can't do yet.

Advanced Launcher doesnt work at all.
Does Rosie mean Sense? (Sorry i just got my first android device)
I didnt find a decend Homescreen replacement that has this feature. Only Tag Home Launcher, but this app slows my phone down (very noticeable!).
The Replacements, which worked fine (for example ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro), didnt have the ability to sort apps in the draer/starmenu...
If you could point me to an working replacement I would be happy!!!
But, coming from windows mobile my experience is: nothing new is developed until apple does it and then sudenly the market is flooded with apps, that do this. ( I was looking for more finger usability since Windows Mobile 2003SE ^^). Of course there are few exceptions...
But please proove me wrong!
About the ability to create folders on the homescreen: I know this ability exists! But in my opinion one big advantage of android is the widgets on the homescreen. I like my homescreen to show me the time, my appointments, the weather...
For launching purpose i would like a simple menu with all my apps (categorizeed, sorted the way i want it )
the way I see it: the iphone has no homescreen it only has a launcher. But soon this launcher will get better than the one from android (now they are equally bad^^) and that is when i think apps will be released to overcome this differnce. But it should be the other way around...
But again: please proove me wrong!

And here is a video showing how apple implemeted it:

its low res, but i am sure there will soon be a better video...
So until I find the perfect solution I'm using the folders created for the on-screen but I'd like to be able to rename the folders. As an Android n00b is that possible?

To change the folder name:
-Open the folder.
-Touch and hold the bar at the top of the folder.
This should give you the "Rename folder" dialog box.
Good luck.
You my friends are the greatest!

[APP] Auto Shortcut - Generate Shortcuts With Custom Icons - 0.2 8/20/10

This is a little app I developed mainly because I got tired of changing all my shortcut icons by hand every time I wanted to try something new.
It works by a folder of icons on your sdcard and matching them to installed applications by name. For example, Browser.png gets mapped to the Browser application.
This is more of a test version i'm looking fro people to find bugs and try other devices.
If you are having problems:
Please send me your log by using the button from the main menu.
Known Issues:
- Very long list of notifications.
Changes:
- 0.2:
You can now edit the title of each app.
I have included a test set of icons, Token Icons, original can be found here: http://brsev.deviantart.com/art/Token-128429570
Now this is cool. Gonna try it out. Only thing is certain apps I like to change the name of when I create shortcuts with BetterCut. Like changing XScope to Browser. I suppose I could do those one by one with BetterCut though.
Adding name changing would be pretty easy.
That would be awesome!
Will try this one for sure
Works really great. It's convenient. Only work involved is naming the icons which can easily be done from your computer before you put them on the sd card.
Updated, you can now set title titles of each shortcut.
going to try it, thanksssssssssss
When I tried it, the buttons of the app did not work properly.
I ran into a slight problem. While selecting the icon folder.
Drilled down to folder.
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hmm
Hit back button...nothing
Hmm
Screen turns black, osmonitor looks maxed out.
After around 5 minutes, maybe more, go into osmonitor and kill auto shortcut.
droid x
Froyo
350+ apps
I have the Droid Incredible, when I get to step 2 "select shortcuts to create" and I tap on create button nothing happens. I could go back to step 2 but I can't do anything on step 2
I'll take a look and throw in some log output data to see if i can find the problem.
could we have some images to test? I want to try this but I have no worthy images to replace my current icons
I added a test set of icons on the original post.
Those of you that are having problems, can you give me your device names and android versions.
didnt work with me
i choose the folder
n' then it shows step2 but nothing listed under it
although i named the icons really easy names ( browser, facebook, phone ) !!!
nexus one cyanogenmodRC3 rom
Did you make sure to capitalize the names? Currently it is case sensitive, perhaps it would be best to ignore the case.
Works on my non-rooted ( ) Evo....anyway we could get more icon packs?
Awesome stuff man =)
I will try on both my HEro and my Magic.

Is there a better way to sort my applications?

Ok so I'm coming from the symbian world (all hail the legendary N95). I like my captivate for the most part but one thing I find slightly annoying is scrolling thru a couple pages of apps to find what I want. I would like to have application groups or folders (i.e. Games, Utilities, Commerce, Misc). Is there a way to do this on Android?

My best advice would be to use a home page to hold folders that house the apps that you use. You can put folders on your homes pages but not in the app drawer.
Another idea: LauncherPro puts your apps in alphabetical order which makes it a little less annoying.
Ok thanks. I suppose the adding folders to the home pages is one workaround.
Yeah the OS on default lets you choose to sort your apps alphabetically in the app drawer, but then you have those times when you know the app you're looking for but can't remember the name (maybe just I do). Would be nice to have some kind of order...
If you leave it in Customizable grid I belive it will add the new apps to the last page, in the order you install them.
But I agree the folders on your home page sounds like the best solution for you. I don't use them myself but I have heard that once you restart your phone the contents of said folders will alpabetize themselves, so you cannot keep a specific order within a folder on the homd screen.
"Apps Organizer" (free) is what you need.
"More Icons Widget" might be good, too, but I haven't tried it.
Another vote for Apps Organizer - labels for apps, multiple labels per app, folders for your labels with custom icons, and the ability to star favorite apps and have them appear first in folders. Auto App Organizer is nice enough too, but I always ended up having to fixs its categorise by hand anyway, auto-categorize never uses your custom categories, and somehow it has completely lost the ability to launch Maps on my phone.

This is what I do. The only time I touch the app door is to add a newly installed application to a folder on the home screen.
I use app organizer and it is wonderful.
My issue is the massive apps folder. Is there any way to remove the entries in this folder?
I segregate my apps in appropriate folders but I would like to pare this folder down as I move the apps to wherever, I would like to use this folder as an indicator of those apps that I haven't yet moved to their new homes.
An alternative would be to have all new apps appear in some other entity from which I could move their references around.

[Q] Home Screen Shortcut Project Question

Hi everyone, noob here.
I come to you for advice after exhausting my ability to Google properly.
I have an idea for a homescreen project and I will try to describe it as clearly as possible. I am running a Motorola triumph with cm7.
I saw a screenshot of someone's phone which I am hopeless to find again.
HERES WHAT I WANT:
On my main homescreen I want shortcut links to other homescreens that are organized by function (work, communication, social, gaming). I would like those shortcuts to be text-based, but larger than the standard icons.
As far as I can tell, only adwlauncher ex has shortcuts to other screens. I don't want to swipe, nor zoom out to a view of all screens to select.
The reason adw bothers me is that there is seemingly no way to change the size of icons. I downloaded desktop visualizer but it does not give me the option to choose one of adws "screen 1,2,3" shortcuts to configure.
In the simplest terms, I want adws screen shortcut links with the ability to resize or change them. Maybe I'm missing something simple (this is my first Android and I've only had it for maybe 45 days so that's probably likely), but I wanted to seek advice from the best forum for information.
Thank you for following my meandering mind, if you have any questions I will try to clarify.
James
I hope it's OK, I don't want to make a bad impression, I want to bump this thread.
Have you tried folders I have four system media tools games with hundreds of apps between them.
There's an app called smart shortcuts that organizes stuff all so.
