Cognition 5 Beta 2 with TW 4 - Captivate General

I have a modified zip file from DesignGear with TW4 but don't know how to share for those that don't know how to modified it.
This was my first time changing anything on any rom, but since I have used for the last 4 days without any issues, I thought that it might be a good idea to share.
I hope that I'm not offending anyone here.
Thanks,
Brasus
Download link is http://www.4shared.com/file/wuoYJ07-/update.html
This is a work of others and I just tried to make it easier for me so I hope others can enjoy as well.
Major thanks to :
designgears (ROM MAKER)
I can't find the name of the user who pointed me to this
and ofcourse the dude who extracted the files for this to happen.
Instead of using Cognition 5 beta 2 in CWM use the Update zip file at the link above, it is the same with the exception that has TW4 as the launcher.

where's it at bro?

In my pc, but if you know of a site the I can upload to and share with people let me know.
Thanks

Good job! It's a great first start. If you could make a package that just installs the TW4 that would help out the people already at Cog5b2 from having to reflash.

Thanks! Flashed this last night and it's been working great all day. Is that a themed version of the TW4 launcher?
I went ahead and swapped it with the TW4.5 launcher by fragg0r and Swiftwork and that's been running great as well FWIW.
If anyone else is wondering I just grabbed the TW4Launcher.apk from this threadrenamed it to TouchWiz30Launcher.apk and put it in the place of the original TouchWiz30Launcher.apk in /system/app/. Reset the permissions to match other apps there and rebooted (not sure if reboot was necessary).
Appreciate the work brasus.

Thanks, I'm going to try to put something together and after testing with my device if all goes well I'll post it.

where is TW4 from?

Sounds intriguing.
I've been on Cog 5 b2 for about a week now and really like it (but I still like my Zeam launcher).

Devs haven't ported lockscreens over... We've had Gingerbread less than a week!
I think nopcodex90 was working on some lockscreen porting.
There are very few mods out there for the Gingerbread releases due to how short of a time we've had it. We got good dumps last Wednesday and didn't get custom kernels compiling/building until Fri/Sat.
oh okay that's cool. thanks!
Just use Widgetlocker, it's a great lockscreen replacement. (And it can look like Infused 1.5)
Widgetlocker or GOTO Lockscreen are good replacements.
Widgetlocker has more customization, but GOTO looks damn good. lol
First of all, stop with the Qs on the dev thread.

Infused 1.5 used the AOSP lock screen, correct? (I tried looking in the topic for it but didn't see it mentioned)
If so, because gtg is slow and tried hijacking my Sensation in my other thread, I added it for you guys: http://www.mediafire.com/?sci0nxexducdrjs
Since CWM is still messed up, this is just a plain old ordinary file. To install it, copy the file (android.policy.jar) and place it in /system/framework, replacing the one that is already in there. Then change the permissions to 0644 (everyone has read access, and only owner has write access. All other checkboxes are left blank). Then reboot and you should get the AOSP lockscreen.
Also, please back up your current android.policy.jar. I am not running Infused 2.0 so I have not tested this, however I just made the exact same changes to my ROM about 20 minutes ago and this worked, so there shouldn't be any problems, but it is still a good idea to back it up anyways in case there is.
alright thanks a lot i'll try that.

[Q] Stock Sammy SMS Messenger?

Ok, so I know I might be in the minority on this, but is there anyway to get the default/stock Samsung messenger for the Charge? I'm fairly new to all of this & am running a custom rom that has the AOSP messenger.
I liked the Sammy messenger over GoSMS/Handcent/Chomp, so if there's a way to find the APK, it would be much appreciated

you should be able to rip the stock mms.apk out of one of the stock debloated rom .zip packages, it'd probably be better to match froyo with froyo (EE4) and GB with GB (EP1Q/EP1W)

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it won't let me install the apk. I've downloaded & unziped imnuts rooted stock rom (EE4). I transferred the mms.apk file to my SD card & tried to install using ES File Explorer. But every time I try to install it I get a message saying that it was unsuccessful.
Do I need to bring over the mms.odex file over too? Or maybe the mmsporvisioning.apk file?
I do appreciate the help though

if your on gummy charged, all my themes have a themed stock mms. i like sammies better too.
I tried out GC 2.0 & the cool themes, but right now I'm on Humble 1.62.
As much as I liked the themed messengers in GC, I still liked Sammy...simple, easy to read & hassle free.
Thanks guys

mount your file explorer of choice (Root Explorer is recommended but Super Manager is a nice free alternative) as read/write then yes drop in /system/app and you should be golden though it might require a reboot to take effect... I should have mentioned this in my previous post as this is what I meant, it probably would've saved you some time

Tried that, but it won't let me paste the MMS apk from the EE4 Stock extract. Just says it can't be moved. Still won't let me do it....maybe I'll just have to get a diff messenger, though I really didn't want to go that route.
Appreciate the advice anyways

Ok, first off, thanks for all the input guys. I really didn't intend for this to turn into a mini-flame thread regarding roms. I just wanted to know how to get back the stock sammy messenger & I was finally able to do so.
Using the Humble 4.22 CRM zip, I deleted the MMS apk that came w/the rom & brought over the apk from the stock roms. Flashed the edited rom & violla! Done & done
Thanks again for everyone who offered input & suggestions. I just couldn't install it via file explorers or just trying to install the apk itself. Just a shot in the dark, but it worked & I learned something.

NEW SOLUTION FOUND - Restore ORIGINAL Verizon Visual VoiceMail

OK... First and foremost all credits, thanks, kudos and appreciation for this solution goes to Virus, this solution comes from their work.
This will restore the original Green icon VVM that many of us have been missing, and cannot find in newer roms.
(Screenshot at bottom)
The difference between this one and the newer version is that this one is integrated into the MMS/SMS layout which in my humble opinion is the best looking and most elegant solution. the last time i saw this working was in one of the earlier versions of
Eternity ROM mecha_signed_060812_063718
so i started there and extracted both the VVM and MMS apk, both are needed.
then i tried to simply install into the latest Eternity ROM without success... : (
On a whim i tried to install via a theme... and Voila success. : )
so here is the solution, i modded the theme zip for Eternity 1.0 so that it only replaces the MMS and VVM and this worked twice in testing.
So far as i know this should work in any rom with HTC Sense, ASOP will not support the mms.apk therefore it wont work on those roms, but i can only guarantee the rom i tested in...
this will replace your MMS.apk in Sense roms, but this shouldn't be an issue
For ICE CREAM SANDWICH look here... http://www.teambamf.net/topic/4331-romics-leak-for-htc-mecha-7006052-403-08212012/
let me know if you run into any issues
instructions
remove your current VVM
(I recommend a rooted uninstall such as Titanium, Rom Toolbox, or whatever)
then boot into recovery
wipe dalvick
wipe cache
install update zip
reboot
I never knew there was any way to get vvm on any aosp rom. That's why I switched to gvvm. I would have kept vvm had I known.. Great work.
ok nevermind, i just loaded up MiniBAMF and the ASOP version did not work.
The MMS.apk needs sense to work, and therefore since that wont happen on an ASOP rom the VVM.apk didnt load.
i have removed the ASOP version.
Sorry guys... : (
Since I already have gvvm set up and you cannot delete your phone number once foolish enough to give it to them I won't be changing back to vvm. It is still a great accomplishment and I hope others can use it. Nice to see folks still putting this kind of work in the tbolt.
Wonder if this is gonna work on the liquid ics ? The version. I had on liquid 3.2 won't work.
that depends, i have a thunderbolt therefore i cant test ICS, but if ICS can run a gingerbread version of the mms.apk then yes. but i dont know enough about the mms.apk on ICS to speak intelligently on this...
Awesome accomplishment!!
+1!!
Thank you for helping the Thunderbolt community!!

AOSP/AOKP MMS.apk with Quick Reply Working on Touchwiz based ROMs!!!

Stumbled upon this recent discovery and just wanted to share the wealth! I extracted the MMS.apk from AOKP build 4 to see if it would work with Touchwiz and it does! Quick reply in the notifications window and all. Install it like any other system app; you'll need to be rooted and have a root explorer:
1. Download MMS.apk from below
2. Move to SD Card
3. ***Backup Touchwiz Messaging App "SecMMS.apk"*** by renaming the file to "SecMMS.apk.bak"
4. Move the downloaded MMS.apk to system/app
5. Fix Permissions to rw-r-r
6. Reboot
7. Hit your dougie or other victory dance of your choosing
I've attached screenshots to show that this is indeed working. The ROM I tried it on is incubus' JellyWiz RLS7 but it should work on any rom. I'm not responsible if you brick your phone or mess up your messaging app but it's pretty straight forward! If you're scared, go to church... or just nandroid :silly:
This is my first "helpful" post so if it's in the wrong section or if I've done something else that may cause WWIII than just let me know and I will fix it. I didn't see any other threads like this one though!
Edit: Didn't test thoroughly enough and as other users have pointed out, it FC's when trying to send or receive a picture message. Still, for someone who likes the quick reply, emoji, look and feel of AOSP, I think that it's a small price to pay. Also, this will ONLY work on Jelly Bean Roms!
Thanks

Edit: FC when trying to send a mms
You should probably add that this will only work on jellybean based roms.
Edit: i'd like to point out that this isn't the most recent version of CM's messaging app. It's missing a lot of the things that they added.

it crashes when you send or recieve mms
Would love to have this though! Its a start...
I've been trying to get this to work since the day I bought the phone. I was using (and still am on my work phone) an inverted AOSP MMS.apk that I just absolutely dig. I was sad when it didn't work on Touchwiz ROMS.
I dug a bit deeper. I got to where you guys were at, I managed to get it to install on a JB TW ROM but it crashed on MMS, just as you all are experiencing. I dug deeper.
I next tried a logcat to see if I could sniff out the issue. Nothing was glaringly obvious as being the issue. I even went so far as to Pastebin it for a well known dev on here, and he pointed it to it being the Gallery as being the issue. Since it's an AOSP app, it was probably looking for an AOSP Gallery. So I tried that. I replaced the TW Gallery with the AOSP Gallery. Still, nothing. The dev hasn't had time to really help me out since, he's a pretty busy guy and isn't even supporting the device, he was more helping me since we're more friends than anything else.
I'm going to see if I can get ahold of another dev on here and see if he can spare some time to help. Problem is, he doesn't have this phone, but I do believe he has a Galaxy Note, or the Skyrocket. I PM'd a few devs supporting our phone with ROM's to ask if they could help, and I didn't receive a response. If anyone knows anyone who can help, I'd be glad to pass along what I have.
I would REALLY like to get this working on TW ROM's. I'd settle for the old school AOSP inverted one I'm using, but the CM/AOKP one is probably pretty similar.
I managed to get an ICS, AKA non Quick Reply version, working with TW builds. Should work with any ICS/JB builds. The file is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1921429

Thanks! It was plagued with issues to start, just trying to get a flashable zip of the stock ROM together was a nightmare, and since there wasn't one any where on the internet to use as a base, well... had no choice but to make one. I'm going to release a non over clocked version as well. This one is still close to stock with a few mods and tweaks, so enjoy and I'll keep working away at bringing a true custom to this phone

Good Job!
I flashed it on my Discover today and it worked flawlessly.
By the way, I didn't make the OC script. It was FitAmp, the credits should go to him.
What launcher did you use? and good job on making a working rom for it, I had been messing around with trying to cook one in the kitchen app for the SS730G. I may give that one a shot with flashing this one, the stock rom on it is having issues anyways as when I try to shut it down it reboots 9 times out of 10.

I may give that one a shot with flashing this one, the stock rom on it is having issues anyways as when I try to shut it down it reboots 9 times out of 10.

Launcher pro, the only launcher I will use since I bought my first droid, runs clean and light. There's always the option to change to whatever launcher you like, for me, on this phone, runs the smoothest and that's what I'm going for here. Many changes still to come!
Kitchen is a great tool for learning AS LONG as you take a look at every change you implement with kitchen, in the update or updater script itself. The one thing about it is, that if you fully rely on kitchen, even if it does work, you won't learn a thing. All of the changes kitchen makes, can be made in terminal and text editor (Linux) to give you some hands on experience

I'm partial to the Nova Launcher myself, but I know what you mean. While the stock launcher is better than the standard Samsung Touchwiz crap, it definitely could use a speed increase on this phone.
I keep hoping and dreaming that someone will be able to port KitKat to this phone. I just flashed the current SlimKat rom on my Nexus S and I'm impressed with how fast the Google Now launcher performs on it. Maybe with this one overclocked to 1GHz and it having 512 megs of ram which I think is a little more than the Nexus S had it would make a different.

Kit Kat was built to run on 512mb, from everything I've heard it utilizes memory way better than any other version yet. I'm going to look at porting ROMs to this device, but one project at a time . It should be possible though. Even if I can port a stock 4.4.2 and start customizing from there, I think this phone would benefit tremendously from it, more so then newer more powerful devices.

I flashed my 730G with this rom, so far it looks good. I may switch the launcher to a different one but other than this it looks and appears to run fine. I can't test the radio at the moment as my net10 sim is cut down to nano size and I can't find my regular sim to nano sim adapter. I know I have one but finding it will be the fun part.
Double check the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS etc, make sure they turn on and work. They should as they work fine on the 730m, but you never know. I haven't seen the build.prop for the G

And check your root too. If root works than the rooting process is the same for both. Just open root browser and if it asks for superuser access you're golden. Plan to add terminal and cpu tuner in the next update.

The wi-fi and GPS appear to work fine. I still haven't been able to find my nano to regular size sim adapter. I wound up replacing launcher pro with nova launcher, and I also installed Titanium backup which I used to integrate the google keyboard. After I switched over to it, I froze the samsung keyboard which was a pain in the ass to have to work with. You may want to look into switching the keyboard if you have a preference in a future release. I really like the google keyboard myself.

I've considered switching the default launcher to nova, or I should say I've tried to. I've had issues with everything I've tried, except launcher pro, and lightning launcher. Lighting launcher is actually extremely fast and lightweight, I think the app itself is less the a MB, but its far different than your standard, familiar style of launcher so I opted out. I've tried solo, which is nearly identical to nova, except there's no pro version, all "pro" features are entirely free. I've also tried KK launcher, again very similar to nova, but all three of them will not load after the initial setup screen. Just don't work well as system apps. Loading them into the data partition should solve this problem, but they install with a file size of 0 MB, and again, won't actually load. All of them work fine when installed from the market, or from an apk, just haven't had luck packaging them with the ROM. I'll look into the keyboard thing. I prefer Swype, but given it's a paid app, I can't really incorporate it, and I don't want to just include a 30 day trial app in the ROM. I'll keep plucking away at it tho. Thanks a ton for your input

ok I just wiped it and went thru setup, it worked with no issues with the samsung keyboard and the nova launcher as system apps. maybe this will help for customizing the rom further? Also it might be a good idea to remove the updater app just to be safe. While I don't think that they would ever push out a rom update for the samsung S730M or S730G it might cause issues if someone who didn't know better used the updater app and downloaded a rom update. It may not be an issue, but I figured it was worth mentioning
I wanted to give an update. I was able to successfully use your rom as a base to make my own custom rom. I had to extract the updater script binary from yours to drop into the appropriate folder in my working folder. I'm going to do a little more fine tuning on what apps I want to include but I should have it ready to share soon.
Also, I finally found my adapter so I was able to read my Net10 sim in my S730G, other than it not having the correct APN which I had to manually enter It worked with no problems once I setup the APN, full signal and no issues with downloading anything once the APN was setup.
OK I've finished the 1.0 version of my rom. it can be found here
Thanks but
before I flash this I want to know if anyone knows where I can download the odin flashable stock firmware for this device. So glad that this is out though but this phone is only 4 months old for me still got 8 months for something to go horribly wrong with it
Thanks! Overall OK.

There is no Odin flashable ROM for this phone. I do have there stock flashable zips tho. Worst case scenario, you Odin flash recovery, then flash the stock zip via cwm. I've been working on CM 9, and have not been able to get it to work, but no matter how many times I've flashed it, I can always flash back to stock via recovery, haven't bricked yet

following!
I'm new to flashing in general so I am just learning what the process entails, but I just put CM11 onto an N7 '13 and I am very impressed with what people are doing. I also have a sluggish Samsung Discover so I'm very interested in how this work proceeds!
Best of luck everyone and thank you Atmu5fear, hopefully I can share my experience soon as well.
