Okay, this is a two part questeion:
1. Does the TF have a default video player? I tried to play a .avi file and it said that it failed to open (i navigated it using the file explorer)
2. If not, which is the best video player to use? Most of my files are in .avi format
It does have a video player. If the stock one did not play it then install moboplayer.
Sent from my Captivate
But when i click on oneof the videos after i installed mobovideo, it goes to the video mode and then goes away. What do i do?
A lot of video players can't run hd. Rockplayer(lite) works for avi files.

Change the decoding setting from hardware to software. Then moboplayer will work. Moboplayer settings.

For some reason only about half of my videos on my sd card are playing properly. They work fine on my computer but once transferred to my phone either crash instantly or I get a prompt that says "This video cannot be played". I have multiple file types, mainly .mp4 and .avi Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Download a player from the market that plays the codecs you listed. The reason some files are not playing is the lack of codec support

Correct, the default video player has limited codec support. My favourite video player is MoboPlayer (available in the Market). Most of the videos I watch are .avi format and MoboPlayer works great!
I already tried that. I dl'ed moboplayer and qqplayer. Neither worked. It did the same as the default and just crashed as soon as I tried to open it. (The video not the player)
Just thought i'll share,
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&feature=more_from_developer
its a multi-format player called MX videoplayer(in case the market link doesnt work).
so far seems good, comparable to mobo player
**edit 18 Aug 2011 **
Here are a few other players that have been mentions in the replies here, i'll put the links here
Mobo Player
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clov4r.android.nil&feature=search_result
i'm using mobo and mx both
DICE Player
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial&feature=more_from_developer
seem like there have been good stuff being mention about it. Thanks to zephiK for letting us know.
I found out that the dev for DICE is actively answering questions on this thread so look out for post by juami (the dev) and if you have specific questions( [email protected] )they are happy to help.
the player i'm waiting for is from VLC.... heard that they are having issue coding the library files(C++) to something android can read.
nice find! downloading now
edit: nice interface still waiting for a video media player that can decode AC3 audio on honeycomb.
Good player...but can't specify a folder to look for videos in.... have videos on microsd card and can't find them when searching for media files

Personally I started using file explorers for opening video files. It usually agrees more with cifs and the standalone ones usually just work better. I'm loving this player tbh. Space bar is pause and play, a feature, as an editor, is welcome.
thanks. I was looking for a decent video player.
Damn it seems to work good but it doesn't handle mkv's.

You can now Update today!
@david279: it handles it. processes video but no audio in H/W.. vice versa in S/W.
and yeah yeah i know I can handbrake to fix it etc etc but I want it to work out of the box without converting
Awesome.... great player....stuck between using this and moboplayer
That was a fast update/fix..... Devs do listen to us normal people hahaha

Cant use it to stream from dreambox, vplayer works very good for that.
What a great find! Thanks for sharing.
I noticed that the sound seems better with this player than others that I've tried.
I'm happy camper!
Another Honeycomb player is out named DICE Player. I had good experiences with it on my phone including mkvs with AC3 audio AND I can confirm that... IT WORKS ON TF101 with the newest version that came out today.
https://market.android.com/search?q=DICE+player&so=1&c=apps
MKV + AC3 Audio working in Hardware Acceleration!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.trial&feature=search_result is the 3-day trial to see if it works.
Edit: About a 3 second lag at the beginning but it plays fine afterwards.

Yeah I definitely bought it. $3.95 is a good price, it's the first media player that actually uses hardware to decode. I just love it because it decodes AC3 audio and uses hardware acceleration.
Whereas, on other players including this one and RockPlayer,MoboPlayer, etc.
When they decode in hardware: no audio, video is fine
Decode in software: video lags, there is audio
This one meets both of them half way and says "bye!" to handbraking to get video files to work.
Works very well on my phone and saw that there was a update to it. I just had to get it for my Transformer when I saw Honeycomb support!
MX Player works better than moboPlayer on my Transformer, and plays 720 video faster from my SD card. Awesome.

Which one? OP video player or Dice?
I did get dice to stutter a bit. A 1080p inception got it and tron legacy had some problems. These were streaming though.

Wow.... works perfectly w/ 720p mkv's..... now if other free movie players would do this
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Could not get it to player any files from microsd card though
Edit: also extracted subtitles did not work on 3 files I tried
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
dice seems to be pretty good but, having some issues accessing my sd card and files with subtitles (gallery to dice trial don't seem to show subtitles and subtitle size and such options don't seem to work)
Can anyone with the full version confirm that works correctly in the paid for version?
what kinda files are the movies yall watch? and where to get them? vuze?
I have tried many apps for testing videos and I stopped to MX Video Player and MoboPlayer. I`m trying to see an .mkv movie (1.5 gb). Using hardware decoding I don`t have sound and using SW I have sound but image slows down. Any ideas? (all apps tested have this problem)
Hmm.. i haven't tried playing a .mkv yet.. but i've tried a 1.5 .avi file w/o any problem.. hope someone can jump in here re your question.
m using Mobo btw..

.avi files are playing fine.
m4v is fine here. Haven't tried mkv yet though.
I had issues with. mkv as well. Since then using .avi or.mp4 and no problems.

mkv's don't seem to work. Especially if they're HD. I think the only way to watch them is to convert the file unless your phone natively supports mkv which the desire s does not.
HD mkv works for me in MX Player when I overclock to 1.2 ghz. No syncing issues.
But does not work on stock ROM.
I got my tf300 yesterday and it great except for one thing. I get no sound when i play my mkv 720 movies or series? I have tried both streaming and local. Tried diceplayer, the built in player and moboplayer without success. MX player worked when i turned of h/w and used s/w instead but then the movies "lagged". Cant get it to work, Anyone have a clue what i can do to make it work?

MX will play them via HW but you need to click the sound key next to the HW/SW button and select the other audio track. Worked for me.
Ah, that works, Thanks. Anyone get any other player to work?
I have had good results using BS player lite. And it is cool because you can change brightness by swiping up and down in the left side of the screen and change volume the same way on the right

use dice player , i can stream 1080p movies from my nmt perfect
I was having the audio issues too with MKVs. Switched over to BS Player. All Be Good.
I use mx player to switch streams on mkv's with no problems

DO NOT DOWNLOAD VLC PLAYER FOR ANDROID!
VLC is still in development, and apks have not been released. If you find a VLC apk, it is not real or it is based on very early, probably buggy code. One person that mentioned having it said that s/he had very intrusive ads. Judging by all other VLC releases on every other platform, the real VLC for Android will not have ads, or at least not obnoxious, intrusive ads.
Diceplayer plays 1080p nicely, as long as you don't got dual audio.
Glad to hear MX player can handle different audiostreams! Now i can get my anime on!
I'll guess i will use MX or bsplayer then. I just find it a bit odd that the same files plays with no problem on my galaxy S2 with dice player..

SOLUTION!!!!
Absolute EASIEST SOLUTION!!!!!
Im running serviio from my pc and typically steam to my samsung tv's
But the easiest solution to stream directly to my s3 (i747 aokp task650)
Is:
Download and install these two apps
1.Bubble upnp https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp
2. Joe VLC https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=the.joevlc
Ive used mx and bs in the past, but this solution is just too easy and fast...
P. S. Ive streamed everything from small avi family guy episodes to 15gb mkv bluray files and this setup is boss..
Only issues i found was minute pixelation when in full screen mode on large files 12gb+ and some buffering when i jump around in said video but other than that its awesome.....
Enabling hw decoding in JoeVlc app takes care of any pixel issues but eats battery...
Happy streaming!
got it
yo
just do to ( in the MX player) Settting -> Decoder--> download custom codec
than u will be direct to a website .. just follow the instraction
worked perfect for me..
thank u it works good
VLC media player has been officialy released some time ago works great with .mkv

Has anyone tried streaming an xvid video over wifi via a samba share using ES File explorer? Mine will not play. I'm on the stock kernel.
I've not tried to stream from ES but ive done it from splashtop browser no problem.

Samehere. Ended up using allshare..works great.
I just set up a share in Ubuntu 11.04 and copied a Sherlock (tv show episode) xvid video to the shared folder.
I am using a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with stock rom and NOT rooted - NO mods.
Oddly enough, when I click on the video using es file explorer it gives me the choice to run Mobo Player OR Mx Video Player but NOT the player that came with the tablet.
I couldn't get the video to play with the Mobo Player. I was able to get the Mx video player to stream and play it perfectly BUT only after setting the Mx video player to software decoding. It would not play with hardware decoding setting activated in the Mx video player.
Mx video player is free on Google Play apps.

annoyingly I am having similar problems. Hardware decoding only seems to work properly when I am playing a file locally. Whenever I am streaming a file via dlna it turns into a glitch fest.
What is strange for me is that nothing worked at all not even mx player until I had installed v player. Prior. To installing vplayer i was having errors about filetypes. Eg 'unsupported filetype video/x-msvideo.
Now vplayer is uninstalled and still everything functions correctly however I am still left without hardware decoding when streaming.
I am currently using minidlna server because its cli based, simple, light and faSt.
Anyway I hope someone has some answers as to why this is happening
The audio format might be causing probs. Also hw decoding does not like variable bit rates.
