[GUIDE] So you want to customize your gTablet? - G Tablet General

Hello all,
This is just another post I am making to hopefully help newbies who may want to mod their gTab but are not sure where to start. xda has an overwhelming amount of information on it and it can be difficult to sort through it all. I hope that someone who just got a gTab or just decided to mod it will be helped by this little compilation.
Now, the first thing we should discuss is what "rooting" an Android device actually means. When you root a device you gain superuser (root) privileges on the ROM you are running. This is only useful if you do not plan to flash a custom ROM, or, in other words, you want to use the stock Tap'n'Tap (TnT) software, but be able to use superuser apps like TitaniumBackup or RootExplorer. Most custom ROMs come rooted.
Now that we've cleared that up, lets talk about what you are actually going to be doing and the stages of the g tablet boot that you will be modding. The gtab boots in 3 stages, it will first load the viewsonic birds screen, here it decides whether to boot the recovery image, the APX bootloader (for nvflash), or the main ROM you have loaded. To change what it does you wither hold the power button (main ROM), Power&Vol+ (recovery kernel), or Power&Vol- (APX bootloader. To flash a custom ROM you install a custom recovery known as ClockWork Mod.
LOADING A CUSTOM RECOVERY WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!
So if you don't want to do that, stop right here! I didn't care, but you might so be aware. Now there is a third thing to consider gTabs ship with two different bootloaders. Information on this topic can be found HERE. It is very important that you know what bootloader version you have before continuing, I soft-bricked (see Troubleshooting) my tablet the first time and had to recover it because I didn't check my bootloader version before trying to flash ClockWork Mod. This guide is meant for those who are on the 1.1-3588 bootloader, if you have the 1.2 bootloader you can either find a guide for that bootloader or downgrade your bootloader (this is what I did) with instructions you can find here.
Once you have CONFIRMED that you are on the 1.1-3588 bootloader, continue.
Instructions for installing ClockworkMod can be found here!
After installing ClockworkMod Successfully, you are well on your way to enjoying your tablet's fullest potential. Now you can flash a custom ROM.
Instructions for installing a custom ROM can be found here!
Some ROM's I highly recommend and their features:
VEGAn-Tab 5.1.1 - Best 2.2 ROM I used.
Dev Thread
VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition - Awesome 2.3.3 ROM! One of the best and most useful ROMs I have used. It is able to make your tablet ready to use immediately.
Dev Thread
TnT-Lite - I have never used this ROM but I have heard good things about it. Worth a look.
Dev Thread
Cyanogen Mod 7.0.3-STABLE - This is my current favorite ROM, but is not as out-of-the-box useful as VEGAn-TAB, VEGAn is an extension of Cyanogenmod, but it is based off of Cyanogenmod 7.0.0, which doesn't support even partial hardware video acceleration or Netflix streaming, therefore I use CYMod 7.0.3. With Cyanogenmod you have to download an update zip file to get google apps because of copyright issues. You can find instructions in the Cyanogenmod Wiki.
Dev Site (not hosted on xda)
Troubleshooting!
OMFGXOXROZWTFYOURUINEDMYTABLETOMG!1!!11! - No, I didn't. Please explain your problems well if you need help! I am not responsible for anything that happens to your tablet, ever
My tablet won't boot up!!! - If you can't boot your tablet this is a soft-brick, but fear not! It can be recovered (usually) Follow instructions here!
How come google apps are missing? - Look up a few lines!
I want to be able to do x!!! - Talk to the developer of the ROM you chose, not me!
Final Note: This is a compendium of useful info for newbies, putting a custom ROM on your tablet does void the warranty and can be tedious, and none of that is my problem! Hopefully anyone who was confused about the process they are considering taking on is now more in the know about what they are going to attempt. Personally I think the gTab is useless without a custom ROM, and that this is essential to making your tablet useeful, I now carry my tablet with me everywhere and would not go back on this purchase in a millon years!
Enjoy and happy modding,

[Q] Confused about Root, ROM, OTA, etc.

Sorry guys but I am very confused about some fundamental basics in the Android customization world. I understand that rooting a device simply unlocks it with optional enhancements. Installing a ROM changes system properties for customization or further enhancement.
Where does kernal fit in?
If Asus releases a new OTA firmware, do I have to reverse the rom AND root before installing the OTA update? Or do I simply have to reverse only the rom before the update? Or do I simply have to reverse only the root before installing the update?
I used BRK's pure root method on my Transformer last week. I've been thinking about installing Revolver or Prime roms on my Transformer, but I am reading that Asus is releasing a new firmware OTA over the next week or two, which leaves me a bit lost on what to do. Do I reverse the root before getting the OTA? Do I keep the root and get the OTA? Do I apply Prime/Revolver rom before the OTA? If I apply Prime/Revolver now, do I have to reverse that before getting the OTA?
My end goal by the end of this month is to get the latest firmware AND have Prime/Revolver rom on my tablet. Please advise on the simplest, straightforward method. Thanks for everyone's patience.
IMO.......(I said mine). Wait until the custom roms come out based on the current update. Hopefully it will solve some of the stupid bugs 3.2 introduced. Then install CWM and then a custom rom of your choice. I recommend Prime but thats what I use. Try them both or just stay stock with root.
No need to due all the switching back and forth since the ASUS update will be the basis of the new custom roms. One overwrites the other
A kernel in basic term link OS and software to phone's hardware.
Usually when Asus release an update, doesn't take very long for one of the dev to
incorporate it into a custom ROM. If you want to run Prime or Revolver I say go ahead and flash it.
Does that mean I can leave my root alone and just continue to apply updates from whatever rom that I use? So new Asus firmware updates will be incorporated into roms? For example I can expect to get Asus updates through prime or revolver, and never have to download directly from Asus again? That's assuming revolver and prime continue getting developed of course.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk
They mean rather than getting OTA updates from ASUS, wait a while after an official update has been released by ASUS and keep checking the Prime and Revolver threads for an updated version from the devs.
The updated custom roms will include the ASUS update.
But it means waiting longer for each update, as you will have to wait for the XDA Devs to incorporate the new ASUS update into their custom prime or revolver roms.
But it means you can leave ROOT alone if you want.
ROOT is not specifically "Unlocking" the device, it is giving the user, and apps ROOT Access to the ROOT Filesystem. So apps that need to access or modify the filesystem, can. Stock non rooted devices such as mine, have no access to the root filesystem - which is good and bad.
Good because you have much less chance of bricking the device, and you continue to get OTA (Over The Air) updates.
Bad because certain very useful programs can not be used, such as Adblocking apps.
Personally I find official updates, and a stock device have more advantages than rooting it and having to use custom roms which may have multiple problems and no official solution.
Ok ill put it in easy to understand terms
Kernel = Bios
rom = windows
root = file write access.

+1. Good way to put it for new users, since everyone understands Windows.
The kernel is like a manager. It is what starts all the hardware and software of the tablet. It makes everything you click and do work. All the underlining things you don't see happen is mostly the kernel.
Rom is just the OS. The user interface, the apps you use, etc. It's the same as Windows or Mac OSX. (not the same functionality, but the same concept/idea)
Root is a bitter-sweat deal. It allows you to customize your device more and use apps like Titanium Backup, Adblock, and other system improving apps. The bad thing is, if you don't know what your modifying in the root system, you could mess up your device. Usually a backup restoration can fix this or you can find help here. I got my first Android phone, the Droid 1, on a Wednesday, by Saturday I was rooted and running roms. Like everything, rooting has its risks, you just have to be careful and smart. Don't download sketchy apps that ask for root access. I try to only use root apps that are mentioned on XDA or from a trusted dev. (usually someone on XDA)
I mentioned back restoration. That is done from a custom recovery. The one we use is called ClockworkMod. Essentially what it is, is a installer and backup combo. Through it, we can install roms, themes, and system edits. We can also backup our current system, so that if anything goes wrong, we can go back to before we hit that problem.
When Asus updates the firmware, it's better to wait for a dev (in our case, Roach) to release a prerooted version. Just makes it easier for us, since we can just flash (install) it without having to go back to stock and all that jazz.
Welcome to Android. Always nice to have someone new join our gang.
Kernel, this one i posted on another forum

A rom is a storage file for all the GUTS of the software, bootup stuff, stock or modified items dealing with user interface and other software. it is bundled together to make it one complete unit so you dont have to do files individual to install, tweak and what have you. This is a real bad description of what a rom is, but dont want to confuse you. Instead of having files all over the place, it is in a form much like a box.

Simplest reply to this is..
1. Install custom firmware pf your choice now.
2. When the newest version of your rom comes out. Install.
Thank you everyone. That was made clear as crystal. I will install a rom and get updates through them. I'm leaning toward revolver for ota updates.

[GUIDE] Simplified Root/Unroot for LG Ally [2.2.1]

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BRICKED PHONE
Nobody has seemed to post a Guide for this device on xda so might as well!
I think the Ally came Froyo 2.2 but we are at 2.2.1 right now so it should still work.
List
#1: Rooting
#2: Custom Recovery
#3: Flashing Custom Roms
#4: Unroot
#5: Some Roms
Rooting
#1: So ye want to root eh? lets get down to the basics...Rooting is the process of gaining administrative rights to the phone so one can do customizations that aren't normally allowed. Rooting can make your piece of junk phone into a beautiful artwork, basic root user can still use many useful things such as, Custom boot animations, the use of a PS3 Controller (Not sure who would use a Ps3 controller on a ally but who am i to judge xD) for Games or Emulators to play some of the good ol days of Nintendo, you are also able to use a wii mote BUT does not require root. we are also able to uninstall all the bloatware the carriers puts onto the phone like Facebook or some other stupid app you don't use. Flashing custom Roms, say you aren't liking the normal Stock features your phone comes with you are able to change the OS, a higher Android version or maybe a port of a different ROM.
Rooting Instructions:
YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A MICRO SDCARD ANY SIZE (2gig preferred)
1. Turn on USB Debugging (Settings - Applications - Development) and turn on Unknown Sources in (Settings - Applications) you can turn this off if you want to when we are done rooting
2. Method one: Tap this link from your phone GingerBreak and download the apk named "GingerBreak-v1.20.apk" in the second post. (be sure to hit the thanks button for Chainfire on the thread )
3. Download a file explorer from the play store such as androzip, astro file manager or if in your status bar tap the file when its done and install it
4. Method Two: you are also able to put the apk file onto your phone from your computer using your usb charger. just drag and drop onto your micro sdcard and install a file manager that will install apks.
5. Open the app and tap the root button to start the root process, It can take around 10 minutes, and will restart automatically when complete, if attempt fails, restart phone manually & run it again. Slam bam in a can, you got root!
Custom Recovery
#2 Congratulations on rooting your phone! Now to check if we have root for sure, check your apps drawer for a new app called SU or Superuser (if you don't have this retry Gingerbreak). if so go to the play store and search for a app called root checker (you may remove once done with it). open the app and tap verify root, if something pops up tap allow and theirs your proof of root. Now before we start flashing goodies and roms onto our phone we need to get a custom recovery. for this guide we are going to use Clockwork Mod but if you want to use twrp or amon-ra recovery go for it, my good friend venkat kamesh has given us a link to both twrp and amon-ra check out the second post. Go to the play store once again and download a app called Rom Manager, tap recovery setup, select the first option (install or update recovery) look for your phone model (should be LG VS740 or LG ally) and let it install and reboot.
1. Method one: back at the main menu tap reboot into recovery (if you want a little simpler method skip to step 4)
2. use the volume buttons to move and send button to select and make a backup of your stock ROM to your micro sdcard.
3. Method two: in Rom Manager here is a option to make a backup from here i don't use it but i guess it gets the job done.
WARNING DO NOT FACTORY RESET FROM THE ANDROID SETTINGS IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE USE ONLY CUSTOM RECOVERY WIPE DATA
Flashing Custom Roms
#3 Flashing roms can be done from Rom Manager but i will be showing you how to flash them from Recovery. download the ROM you want FOR YOUR PHONE ONLY (JUST BECAUSE THE ROM YOU WANT HAS SIMILAR SPECS TO YOUR PHONE OR SAME PHONE BUT FOR DIFFERENT CARRIER IT DOES NOT MATTER YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE </3) and get into recovery mode from Rom Manager. if you haven't made a backup make one now. once your done with backing up your stock, select wipe data, next select flash zip from SD Card and look for where you put the rom you downloaded onto your rom and congratulations you have Flashed your ROM! if your Rom comes with a gapps, you flash it after you flash your ROM so you have working Google apps such as the market and several other things but not all ROMs require them. (most likely only android 4.x.x roms)
Unroot
#4 You can only unroot if you get back to your Stock backup or you are on stock, Either SuperSU or Superuser should have the option to fully unroot.
Stock recovery (only use this when you are on rooted stock)

Thanks for adding it so quickly! My ROM is not the best LG Ally ROM, but it runs. It is basicly if LG had made Android 2.3.4 for the LG Ally. Just with a few bugs. WARNING: Camera flash does not work.

Of course, i read over it before adding it, ill have to try it myself.
Any of these roms still out there.
I Just wrote a huge explanation of why I was looking for some of these roms, but when i pecked" the "post reply" The thread told me game-over, and I respawned with a fresh new palette. :/
It would be well appreciated if someone could hook me up with the necessities to OTA and rom this (aloha). I can't find anything, anywhere...
I was fortunate enough to find a CWM image and velocity rom when i first got this from the good ole granny awhile back, but long story short, I no longer have them in my collection.
So I'm currently stuck at
2.2.1 ------Android version
FRG83D --Build (whatever that means)
2.6.32.9 ---Kernel
And I'm not sure if I messed it up flashing the wrong roms without doing the OTA, but it doesn't seem to be functioning properly, or as proper as i'd like it to...
If I could get ahold of some lightweight roms, supporting gapps, (and preferably oc'd), as well as the stock necessities to OTA this thing and make it decent again I would be overjoyed , I realize i could be just wasting my time but worth a try, (i hate to see such a nice keyboard go in the garbage. : D)
I basically either want to make this thing into either a handheld gaming emulator for the younger gen relatives (If that's' even a possibility), or just settle with an ip webcam///tinyCam pro app, to scare off all of the future nasty intruders that may come along someday .
If anyone has anything they could somehow get to me, it would be much appreciated.
If not then I guess i'm stuck dinking with my dualboot oneplus 2 chrooted with nethunter.
but of course... even that has no keyboard.

I could be wrong, but usually with older phones, You want to flash to the highest OTA that you can get to, because you did that it updates to the highest supported (optimized) radio and kernel, i believe the reason for doing this is that all roms higher or at the OTA build level use those assets but dont install them if you flash a rom that way, if you think its not functioning properly, its either the rom itself or as you said didnt flash properly, honestly i havent done anything android related in a very long time, the best advice i can throw at you is using a different rom, the only rom i would probably think you should use is the velocity rom really, You wouldnt want to do any overclocking on it, i know for sure it wouldnt give any performance improvement. i was also a little confused by what you wanted in your post.

Lack of OTA is probably my problem then.
I'm constantly getting an ota update notification, but currently have cwm installed with root.
I might have a stock backup somewhere, but I believe i'd have to take off cwm and root in order to get the necessary ota for velocity rom to run correctly.
Although i may be wrong.
I guess what i'm asking for is, if anyone might have one or all of the following
stock-recovery.img
velocity rom
Amonra or CWM
and whether or not they could dig it up without too much hassle.
I know it's old stuff, so i'm not too worried about it if it's not available anymore. No biggy really.
Thanks for the reply and explanation btw, needed a bit of a refresher

"...but from all the reading in the forums and bleeding eyes..." for that?! Nah...
1. Unlock: get the apk from asus site (V8) for it. If you run into problems, downgrade to 4.1 and use ver. 7 instead. This is not an unknown issue. Once you're unlocked, it will remain so forever;
2. Recovery: if you stay on 4.2, you can't use CWM. Must install TWRP (2630-4.2 is the latest, I believe). You can use CWM on 4.1, but if you're gonna upgrade anyway, might as well flash TWRP throughout. Choose your recovery carefully: 2.6.3.0 is for 4.1 bootloader (10.4.x.xx); 2.6.3.0-4.2 is for 4.2 bootloader (10.6.x.xx - your current rom). Do it otherwise and you risk bricking your device! That done, you can change roms to your heart's content.
Basically, downgrade to 4.1 if need be, unlock, upgrade to 4.2, flash TWRP, then custom roms. Don't mix roms with incompatible bootloaders though: read the rom threads carefully, Usually, they will warn you at the beginning which bootloader is required for a particular rom. Hint: 4.3 roms definitely need 4.2 bootloader. Have fun.
Note: if you happen to upgrade to 4.2 and like it that way, you can flash Nvflash bootloader (10.6,x) and use CWM 4.2 recovery instead. Credit to Noahvt for pointing that out. A glitch in my case: I could flash, but could not back up. CMW is unreliable, and should be used only as a last resort, as in you don't have a working touchscreen.

[complete guide to rooting/flashing your zte engage]

---------- I have personally done this on my ZTE ENGAGE V8000 ---------
--------------------- IT IS ALSO A LOT EASIER THAN YOU THINK ---------------------
Now let's just start this out by saying that there are A LOT of resources for all the information you would ever need to root your device, and where to go from there... But, as I am sure you are finding out, EVERY phone has to be treated differently, and there is no -1-way-is-THE-way-for-every-phone scenario. ESPECIALLY for the wonderful ZTE ENGAGE v8000. So this is just how i made it happen on my phone, starting from knowing absolutely NOTHING about rooting, to having it done and finished now and working FANTABULOUSLY. I went through a lot of headaches trying to figure this out and read and read for DAYS, ruling out non-credible sources like that link that always pops up 'SUPER EASY ROOT FOR ENGAGE v8000' blah blah, i read that that method had bricked all kinds of phones, so i decided to stray away from all that nonsense and talked to different people and am compiling all of that info into this one post. HOPEFULLY it makes it easier for you. Your use of anything here is done at your own risk. I nor anyone else is responsible for your phone. And rooting your phone will void your warranty. Having, said that and gotten it out of the way here are the steps you will need to take:
BASIC INFO LINKS (that i found helpful starting out as a NOOBY NOOB! haha):
Now just an FYI, this way DOES NOT REQUIRE YOUR PHONE TO ALREADY BE ROOTED, but you can always go that route if you'd like but dont ask me how haha.. i've included some links below for your benefit though...
Rooting and Roms Explained
Lifehacker How-to Flash/ROMs
Custom ROMs Info
Re-done EASY Root Method for ZTE Engage
Tips to Not Brick Engage
ZTE Engage Roms
GOOGLE SEARCH
How to Root ZTE ENGAGE
SEARCH AND READ THE HELL OUT OF XDA DEVELOPERS
anyway, the list goes on and on... you get the point. I will also include links in each section that is necessary.
Now don't get overwhelmed... once we start this thing, and you being doing it, it is a piece of CAKE, really...
****REQUIREMENTS****
Cricket ZTE Engage V8000
(this is NOT for the Engage LT N8000)
The only other requirement is you can boot your phone into recovery.
Yes this can be installed in stock recovery.
No you don't need to be rooted.
BE PREPARED FOR A LONG JOURNEY, this will take time.
****READ THROUGH THIS AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE YOU DO IT****
**WARNING**
This rom will wipe all data upon install so make sure you have a backup or don't care if data is lost
Also, this will most likely VOID your warranty, continue at your own risk
There is a RISK of 'bricking' your phone, as with ANY rom, but is HIGHLY UNLIKELY
STEP 1
BACKUP EVERYTHING on your phone, send contacts to SD card, PICTURES, Any text messages you need to keep, Documents, GAME SAVES, make a list of ALL the apps you have installed (or back them up using your own method of choice), Be prepared for your phone to be SET BACK TO FACTORY DEFAULT meaning *****EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ERASED*****. so back up whatever you want to keep and/or think you want to keep. Now I am a perfectionist, so i made 2 Backups, this was my PRE backup-backup. haha. If you are fine with just trusting that the CWM backup will keep everything then wait til later when you will do an entire phone backup in case anything goes wrong, and also to prevent bricking using CWM, or any other backup app of your choice. I literally just copied EVERY file from my phone to a folder on my computer AND did a phone backup.
I used an app called MY BACKUP (get it from PLAY STORE) because it allowed me to backup NON-ROOTED, so i could backup BEFORE i wipe my phone, which will make this a lot easier for me in the long run.
Guide to Backing up/Restoring
LOOK AROUND and figure out what ROOT apps you would like to have on your phone. Make a list so you know what you want BEFORE you erase/Backup your phone, or download them and put them on SD card, so you will have them afterwards. im referring to apps like ROM Toolbox, My Backup, NANDroid Backup, Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, GooManager, some sort of ANTI-VIRUS, SETCPU, etc...
30 Best Apps for ROOTed Devices
----- check and double check you have saved everything, there is no going back once you've started -----
STEP 2
DOWNLOAD CWM [Clockwork Mod](for your specific device, this guide is for the ZTE ENGAGE V8000 SPECIFICALLY)The following link brings you to the main thread which has more information, INSTRUCTIONS and a Q&A posting... feel free to READ EVERYTHING, its better to know too much in this subject than too little. Now you want to get the Unofficial_CWM-v6.0.3.3-V.zip because the official is just the image, not a zip and you need zip to install and the stock one is just if you later decide you dont like whatever you have done and want your phone to go back FACTORY DEFAULT. Like, if you dont like the new ROM on your phone and want your old normal -android- OS (4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) back. The difference of those confused me at first. Now, do not skip ahead, this part is for DOWNLOAD only, do not attempt to install yet!!
CWM & Stock Recovery Thread: Download and Instructions
More Information and Instructions for ClockwordMod Recovery
*Save .zip for later
ALSO DOWNLOAD the Stock ROM, just in case you want it later, if you dont like the ROM we're gonna install on your device, you have this incase you want to go back to the stock settings. Now, do not skip ahead, this part is for DOWNLOAD only, do not attempt to install yet!!
CWM & Stock Recovery Thread, Download and Instructions
*Save .zip for later
Download S420 ROM. This is going to be the ROOT ROM. It's the main custom rom that we are installing on the phone, the one that will REPLACE the ICE CREAM SANDWICH ANDROID OS and VOID your warranty. It is still based off of Ice Cream Sandwich 4.04 or whatever, because ZTE has not (and probably will not) release an update for their devices to go to jelly bean, or any higher. (kitkat, etc). SORRY GUYS, we're stuck with ICS. Now, do not skip ahead, this part is for DOWNLOAD only, do not attempt to install yet!!
S420 ROM Thread: Download and Instructions
*Save .zip for later.
Copy downloaded files to SD card "Computer > Removable disk > ______ "
we are only using CWM right now, save others on SDCARD for later use
Now, BEGIN installation of the CWM .zip
INSTRUCTIONS: link, SAME AS ABOVE
STEP 3
AFTER CWM is installed and working CORRECTLY: We need to do the PHONE BACKUP. You have a few options here, you can either GO INTO CWM AND RESTORE IN THE RECOVERY MENU or Go to following link, and follow instructions: (IT HAS PICTURES)
Creating and Restoring NANDroid Backups using CWM
Other Options for Backup
Or you can just use the default backup tool provided by CWM, which is what I did.
------ Now that your ass is covered... we can continue ------
STEP 4
Now, getting a ROM on your baby.... THERE is only ONE that i found for the ZTE ENGAGE, which, you guessed it, is also by senor Stedman420... what on earth would we engage users do without this guy? haa... NOTHIN that's what... He's got a ROM called S420 for our device, and as far as i can tell, it is the only one that is modded in any way. YOU DOWNLOADED THIS EARLIER.
Now, just follow his INSTRUCTIONS for installing
BOOM your done!!! Now just restore all your stuff and you are one rooted mofo.

Cricket Engage LT n8000
I have a Cricket Engage LT n8000 and need a custom ROM like CyanogenMod. I heard this is the number one custom ROM. What do you think I should do?

Hey, So with older phones its kinda tricky because, ultimately, it depends if anyone else has modded that ROM to work with your device... please DO NOT just install any ROM on your device it will most likely brick it or make it unusable. I havent had my ZTE engage for quite some time now so I am not sure as to what has been done since then, but this forum might help you http://androidforums.com/threads/roms-for-the-zte-engage-v8000-or-lt-n8000.722734/
My best suggestion would be to google the heck out of it and see if you can find someone who made CyanogenMod compatible with your ZTE Engage, but it might not be possible so you might have to use one of the ones in the forum i posted (the roms i posted in here will not work, but you can still take advantage of the help links i posted they will take you to VERY useful sites that might be able to answer your question)
Good luck and happy rooting!

Android to a dummie

Hello
(sorry for my english)
I'm a noob in this world and i need some help.
In the past few days i've been reading a lot of posts in this forum but to a noob it's a little bit hard to understand somethings.
So, i'm using this topic to ask some questions. If there is another thread that answer all my questions and explain things for a newbie, feel free to tell me and apologize to create this new thread.
I have a smartphone android, Galaxy S2 with android 4.1.2, all locked to the provider (I know that there is a specific forum for this smartphone and i read some threads).
Now, i want to make it a ROOT and maybe try new ROM's.
Let's start with the questions:
-To make a root, it's better with kernel exchange or with a simple file?
-In the future, if i want to install another ROM, having the root made from the kernel that is with the phone (using a file in the SD Card) may cause some problems? To do this it's better to go to root insecure kernel?
-Why i need to change kernel? which is the benefits?
-It's possible to restore to the previous kernel?
-What are necessary to backup the ROM that actually i have?
-Changing one time the kernel, i can install all the roms i want or i need to install another kernel's?
Thank you for your atention, and one more time, sorry for my english!
@pedrocrv,
Your English is fine! Don't worry about that, man.
Here is my opinion.
Generally speaking, you don't need to replace your kernel. Replacing the kernel can both drastically change your device's performance for the better, as well as render your device completely unusable, which in Android terminology is called "bricked". If your device is "bricked", it is completely useless as an electronic device, making it nothing more than a brick.
But to get back on topic, it's normally only developers like myself who need to replace the kernel, and even then only every once in a while. It's somewhat unsafe for new users, because one little mistake can lead to a huge problem. Trust me, I've seen them here on XDA myself. Don't become one of them.
However, using and flashing ROMs is a whole different story. ROMs normally change aesthetic parts of your device, like the look and features. If you follow the instructions given to install the specific ROM very well, it is practically impossible to brick your device.
If you find a good ROM, go for it. It's almost definitely going to change your device in a very good way.
So to wrap up this post, basically (for you):
Replace the kernel = bad idea, don't do it until you have more experience
Install/flash a ROM = a great idea, go for it if you find a nice one!
The most important thing to remember, however, is to m a k e a b a c k u p. Once you make a backup, you can mod your system however you want without fear of bricking.
Hope this helps.
@thenookieforlife3
Thank you for your explanation!
I understand what you said, but in one thread of my smartphone i see a lot of people talking about rooting their phones but for this is needed to use another kernel.
I want to root my device, and in a near future maybe install one ROM of CyanogenMod (and try others too), but i'm afraid of rooting because that story of changing the device kernel and using Odin... I don't want a brick
Another question:
If i find a file to root my device without Odin, but i don't have the 100% that it's the file indicated for my device, there is some problem if I try to root with that?
And, as i see, there is some diferent files, how i choose one? it's indifferent or one file have specific itens that another don't have?
Thanks a lot!

like Thenookieforlife3 said you do not need a kernel, you dont need one to root or install roms/custom recovery's, they are just for tweaking things or being able to overclock. So, first of all, you are going to have to tell us your model number (or which carrier your phone is on) so we can direct you to the right root guide, s2's are fairly easy to root so dont be scared we will hold your hands the entire way!

This. ^
We can definitely give you a hand, but we do need a few details to make sure everything works out.
hello again!
@Trozzul and @thenookieforlife3,
Thank you!
So there is the information asked for: (see the attachment for more details)
Bandbase: I9100BULS1
Kernel: 3.0.31-889555 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 31 14:48:54 KST 2013
Compilation Number: JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
I have another questions to do:
-What vary from file to file on root?
-What is a AOSP ROM? Where I can find a rom that is almost empty of trash, like i think it is a Stock Rom?
-In the information given above, wich is more important to see if I can install that rom? Can I install a rom that is not XWLSD?
Many thanks!
Answers to your questions are in red.
Thank you! You're very welcome!

Compilation Number: JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
I have another questions to do:
-What vary from file to file on root? Normally not much changes from root method to root method - basically, if anything does, it's negligible to you, meaning that it won't really matter. What does matter is that the root method actually roots your phone.
-What is a AOSP ROM? ASOP stands for Android Open Source Project, and it pretty much means that it's a ROM that is as minimalistic and "free of trash", as you say, as you can get it.
-Where I can find a rom that is almost empty of trash, like i think it is a Stock Rom? Here are a few good ones:
AOSP NeatROM for S2
CarbonRom KitKat for S2
SuperNexus for S2
-In the information given above, which is more important to see if I can install that rom? Can I install a rom that is not XWLSD? The ROMs that you can install will be labelled "S2" and "I9100". Don't try to install any other ROMs unless they have those labels.
Hope these help!
I understand what you said!
For example, the AOSP NeatROM have a version that is not AOSP. What it means?
To Install other ROM's i need to root first?
And now, how i simply root by a file?
@pedrocrv,
Answers to your questions in red.
For example, the AOSP NeatROM have a version that is not AOSP. What it means? That means that there is another version of that ROM that is more full of extra features, a.k.a "trash".
To Install other ROM's i need to root first? Yes.
And now, how i simply root by a file? It depends from method to method - some methods are apps that you install and then hit a "big red button", some methods are files that you have to flash through a custom recovery, for example, ClockworkMod. Basically, just read and follow the instructions that come with each root method.
again, thank you!
So, if i find some thread that talk about a file to root, it's just follow the instructions and it's done?
how I know that i need a custom recovery? mine doesn't work?
what is flashing?
Thank you for your attention!
@pedrocrv,
Once again, answers to your questions in red.
So, if i find some thread that talk about a file to root, it's just follow the instructions and it's done? Yes, that's right.
how I know that i need a custom recovery? mine doesn't work? The rooting method will tell you in the instructions whether or not you need a custom recovery, and if it does, it will tell you which one to use and how to use it.
what is flashing? Simply put, flashing is installing a file (normally a .zip) that has been specially formatted via a recovery method (custom or stock).
Thank you for your attention! No problem!

im sure we should introduce him to cyanogenmod, cyanogenmod can be more stock than Asop most of the time, Asops nice but there are most of the time little additions that the creator likes, plus if cyanogenmod installer is compatible for your device he shouldn't have todo much!
@pedrocrv , im not trying to steal his thunder but im trying my best to explain it to you too if he left anything out, otherwise if you guys want me to i will back out .
Custom recovery's are basically a way of getting out of a bad spot and being able to Flash new Roms, if you get stuck in a bootloop (stays stuck at the samsung screen for a very long time, the first time you flash a rom you should let it sit for it can take awhile for the first time you turn it on.) you can most likely get out of the problem and be able to backup your stock firmware if you decide you dont like rooting/custom roms, it does stuff the Stock recovery does not do.
Flashing is basically as thenookieforlife3 said its so you can install Roms, when you hear the term flashing think "installing".
@Trozzul and @thenookieforlife3,
Thank you for both atention! i'm learning a lot of things with both of you!
I know cyanogen, and as i search in the wiki of cyanogen page i think my phone is compatible.
What I need to do with the installer? And if i use the installer, how I backup my actual ROM to future problems or needs to come to origins?
stock ROM-> My actual ROM?
Custom ROM-> a new one
So, if i understand everything:
With my actual recovery i'm not able to install other ROM's. But, with my recovery, i'm able to root my device unless the root method needs a custom recovery and it say's how to install it right?
With the root by my recovery, i'm able to install other ROM's but I will need to further install a custom recovery right?
Many thanks :good:

Yes your stock rom is what the device comes with when you buy it. every device method of being able to get custom roms is different, so when you do get a new phone always do your research, sometimes you can root it and dont need a custom recovery (thats only if you want to stay on stock rom) sometimes you need a custom recovery to get root. with my S2 what i needed todo was get a custom recovery first, installing cyanogenmod already comes rooted so you can make a backup of your stock rom without rooting it.
so i dont also exactly know which device you have, where are you from? it looks spanish in your phones setttings with that screenshot, region is important. is it a GT-i9100 or a GT-i9100b? take out the battery and tell us what the model number says there. this is important for the cyanogenmod installer.

There's very little difference between the i9100 and the i9100b, but the difference is enough that there is a separate CyanogenMod installer for both models.

@thenookieforlife3 i think the cyanogenmod installer installs a CWM right for his question on it? also look at these stated on the Cyanogenmod wiki for the GT-i9100
WARNING:
Some second-generation Samsung Exynos devices are potentially susceptible to a "superbrick" caused by performing a factory reset with the stock kernel, which effectively kills the internal memory in the device. It is highly recommended you do not perform this operation while using a stock kernel for safety reasons. To make sure you aren't running the stock kernel (only needed when coming from the stock ROM), fully install CM without performing a factory reset and reboot to recovery before you perform the factory reset.
WARNING:
If you used a non-official method to remove a provider lock, your /efs partition may become corrupt! It is highly recommended you make a backup of this for safe keeping before attempting to modify your device, especially if you plan to remove such a lock.
WARNING:
The newest Gapps package (20140606) is too big for the /system partition of i9100. Please use the 20140105 package instead. This message will disappear when this is resolved.

Should we tell him to run a benchmark and tell us his CPU?
@pedrocrv (Edit:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antutu.ABenchMark download this app real fast and tell us what CPU you have) so the cyanogenmod installer will be the easiest thing for you, even though installing a custom rom is insanely easy this is basically a one click method, note that all of your data will be deleted so back that up somewhere where you can save it and put it on your phone when its done installing. so as i asked thenookieforlife3i believe that the cyanogenmod installer will also install the latest and best custom recovery for you (CWM: Clockworkmod will be a huge term like CM: Cyanogenmod you will hear a lot, they are both very popular for being the most stable.) it would be stupid enough for it not to install it as well, but if it does not we will show you an easy app that will install a custom recovery, basically one click just like cyanogenmod. now as i looked on the cyanogenmod site, the installer IS compatible with your phone and will install a Stable version of Cyanogenmod 10.2 which is android 4.3. note that the highest right now is CM 11 which is android 4.4.4 kit kat but right now is what we call a "Nightly".
i will try my best to explain this to you, there are four stages that cyanogenmod puts out i will rate them from lowest to highest: "experiments" "snapshot" "nightly" and "Stable", you only need to worry about nightly and stable, Stable is basically the final product the last update for that android version so its the most stable and with less bugs and this is what you want to aim for, Nightlys are Nightly generated updates that update bugs every night asked by people like us to be fixed, Honestly Nightlys are Very stable and are perfectly fine.
Now you might like Cyanogenmod 10.2, personally a lot of my phones run 10.2 if its available, you might like kit kat (Cyanogenmod 11) better instead, honestly try out 10.2 first and if you dont like it, you can update to Cyanogenmod 11 (they push updates out like how samsung would push out updates.) without deleting your information on CM 10.2, im sorry if i confused you at all please ask a lot of questions if needed!

Yes, installing CyanogenMod installs ClockworkMod as the default recovery.
Yes, let's have him run a benchmark and tell us the results.
@thenookieforlife3 and @Trozzul
Again, thank you for your patience!
I'm now running the benchmark!
Let's put new question's..
-With CM 10.2, it comes with root, and how to unlock the SIM?
-With CM 10.2, in wich phase of the installation I will be able to backup my stock ROM?
-Imagine that after sometime I want to go back to my stock ROM, What I need to do, because i will have another recovery?
-WIth the CM 10.2 I will have my RAM memory more free?

@pedrocrv,
As always, answers to your questions in red.
-With CM 10.2, it comes with root, and how to unlock the SIM? @Trozzul, if you'd please answer this question, that would be great, because I don't know much about SIM unlocking.
-With CM 10.2, in wich phase of the installation I will be able to backup my stock ROM? You will want to make a Nandroid backup before you do anything at all in relation to rooting and CyanogenMod.
-Imagine that after sometime I want to go back to my stock ROM, What I need to do, because i will have another recovery? You will use either the "Install update from SD card" or the "Install .zip from SD card" feature. I don't know exactly, but if that time comes, please let me know and I'll do the research necessary to help you out.
-WIth the CM 10.2 I will have my RAM memory more free? It all depends on what apps you have running at one time. I personally use Advanced Task Killer Free to kill apps directly after I'm finished using them, and that frees up a lot of RAM. CM probably overall will make your RAM memory less free, but if you use the app killing trick, you won't ever have a problem with it.
In the attachment are the images of the test Great, thank you for doing that.
