I am done with Samsung after this. This is the second Samsung smartphone that I have owned where after sale support is HORRIBLE.
I was wondering how many people feel the same way.
Is the Captivate your last Samsung phone?
Most likely the last. If it weren't for the screen and snappiness after the lag-fix, it would probably have been returned by now. After the lag-fix I'm fairly impressed with the speed of the device, just wish the blasted GPS would work like it does for iPhone, HTC and Motorola users. I feel cheated. Downloading new apps from Marketplace is another point of weakness for those of us in the land where 3G is nothing but a dream. There is a problem downloading apps on the Edge network, sometimes they start downloading right away and other times you got to walk away from the phone for a few hours and it'll download when it feels like it.
My wife has the Rugby II from Samsung and I'll be darned if that thing won't last for days without a battery charge. Amazing how long it manages to live without a battery recharge.
Abso-freaking-lutely
I thought samsung had gotten serious when it said it wanted to be the #1 smartphone manufacturer and they promised a strong commitment to software updates since they knew that their name was garbage in this arena. Well I bought a Captivate on release day and its been nothing but trouble ever since. Random reboots, GPS that's non-functional, etc. Then finally 2 months later they release a supposed GPS fix, that 90% of the people cant even install on their phones and it doesnt even fix the GPS, mine works worse now than before. And on top of all that now my digital compass is unusable, it always points 90-180 degrees in the wrong direction. On maps its funny, I'm driving one direction and it points behind me or perpendicular to me. And dont even get me started on the completely pathetic battery life. 12 hours on one charge is completely unacceptable. Iphone4's that are using the same CPU/GPU get days on their batteries. The S-AMOLED screen looks pretty good (not as good as the retina display, but better than just about anything else) but it is a total battery hog.
I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish I had just gotten the iphone4, its so much better, its not even close.

This is my second samsung phone in 10+ years and my first smartphone from them
I'm actually complete opposite from you maybe because i haven't had any issues outside of the GPS and i'm more than willing to give them a chance to fix it. It's not like i'm using the GPS all the time for the fact that i live in nyc
If they can't fix the GPS to work like it should (like on the Nexus One, Droid, etc), then yes, this will probably be my last Samsung phone. They've screwed people over with the Behold too (atleast I think that was the phone).
HTC isn't known for great reception, but I loved my Nexus One and wish I wouldn't have sold it now.
Hardly. I've gone from an old Sammy flip phone, to the Blackjack, to the Jack, to the Captivate. Whole family is on Samsung's now, Flight, Impression, can't think of my daughter's at the moment. Love Samsungs!

No, but only because of xda
If I had to rely on Samsung for support, then I would have voted yes. The JH7 update has been a fiasco. Without this forum and the dedicated work of designgears and clockworkmod, my phone would still be in an unstable state from the failed (at 100%!) installation. I'll be sending both of those guys some money to pay for the great support -- it's unfortunate that companies like Samsung and AT&T don't have a clue and can't provide the same level of service. Keep in mind that Samsung has full access to every detail of the hardware and software while our guys have done everything through reverse engineering. Incredible job!

I never used a samsung smartphone before this one, but when I had regular flip phones, I wouldnt use anything other than a samsung, I loved them. Everytime Sprint came out with the newest samsung flip phone I'd run to get it, they are just excellent phones. Everytime I strayed from samsung to try a razr or LG, etc I always regretted it within a week and went right back to samsung. But I am utterly disappointed in this captivate. I am kicking myself everyday for not returning it within the 30 days to get an iphone. I kept holding out hope for fixes for most of its shortfalls and everyone keeps saying how open android is, well so far nothing. No fully functioning custom ROMs, no cyanogen, no AOSP, and you have to root and hack like hell to get any customization at all. Its no more open than the iOS, on that you have to jailbreak but then you can go to Cydia and there are thousands and thousands of apps and customizations you can load.

You do realize you're comparing a messaging phone to a smartphone right? No smartphone will consistently give you that kind of battery life with any kind of use.
Great Tech, GPS is ok at best./......my first android device, and i like it a lot.
I really like this phone, but if Samsung doesn't fix the GPS for current Captivate owners, I will never buy another Samsung product.
And, either way, I won't go with AT&T again either.
I had the iphone 3g, 3gs, and the iphone 4 for a few weeks. I also had a nexus one for a while. All great phones, all great GPS accuracy. I left my iphone 3gs for my Nexus One because of the voice to text, and the google navigation. The iphone 4 dropped almost all my calls. It went back fast. I went with the Samsung Captivate because it trumped my Nexus in a lot of ways. I did not expect this GPS issue when I purchased it. By the time Samsung had announced that the GPS issue was indeed an issue, I had already returned mine 3 times because the GPS would not lock. They announced a fix sometime soon in the future, so I stuck with it. I would gladly go with another android device if it was available for AT&T and was comparable to my Captivate. The only other device close is the Sony Ericsson X10. I am not going back to 1.6 and no multitouch.
Unfortunately this is the best Android that will work with AT&T's 3g network at the moment. Samsung built an awesome device, they just need to fix the GPS.
Yup, this is going to be my last Samsung phone.
Samsung is just too incompetent.
I had an HTC before this and it wasn't perfect and there were many vocal members that thought negatively about it. My fiance has an iPhone and is always complaining about it. When I look at Motorola threads I see lots of complaints.
I'm seeing a pattern here. No phone is perfect.
This is the best phone I've played with though. I rarely use GPS so that obviously doesn't affect my like/dislike of the phone. And from what I can tell most people are angry because of the GPS.
I can't honestly understand what the big deal is with GPS. Do people get lost that easily that they need to be looking at a GPS map every minute of the day? I'm sure for some jobs it could be a mandatory thing, but I'm just a little mystified at how many people are upset about GPS like their lives depend on it every day or something. Maybe I'm just lucky that I don't get lost easily, or can follow directions from mapquest?
I'm not trying to insult people with GPS issues, I just truly don't understand how so many people think the GPS issue is a deal breaker. Especially considering it will almost surely be fixed sooner rather than later.
And if people are upset about the update from Samsung not working... patience? I mean you're on the XDA forums posting, so you must have some experience here and know that when there's a problem with smartphones it gets fixed pretty quickly by the community you're a part of. So what's the rush to condemn Samsung for a buggy patch that'll probably be re-written soon anyhow?
This is my first Samsung phone. So far I'm pretty impressed. I had Apple 3G, RIM Blackberry Perl, Motorola Razor, Sony Erickson (forgot the model #) ect... So I had tried so many different brand in my years owning regular cellphones and smartphones. But so far, Samsung Captivate is the best among them all.
If Samsung would come out with a dual core or three core cpu, 4 to 5 inch monitor, front facing camera and 1080p video recording smartphone next year, I'll definitely get it...
I kind of knew that all OTA firmware updates from all major cellphone manufactures will have some kind of issues. That's why in the future, I will download the firmware and install the updates manually.
I agree with sschrupp. Ignoring the GPS issue, I've had no problems with this phone. I had iPhone before this, and I liked it, but not as much as I like this phone. Android satisfies the need to tinker and tweak (thank you XDA). The hardware is pretty darn good too. I get good reception here in the boonies of Kansas, the screen is gorgeous. ignoring GPS issues, I really like this phone.

I agreed with you. No cellphone is perfect, especially when they are made in China or other asian places... they bound to have some kind of defect or it will not last more than one year...
Wow you guys are crazy
This phone has been great, the best I have owned in years.
So the OTA update didnt work for you because you modified your phone from the original state? Boo Hoo. You cant expect a patch to work for your modified rom when it was designed for stock
yes If i can find a nexus one under 400 bucks this thing is gone tonight. i could care less about GPS since (call me old fashioned) i just look at what street to take but the fact that i have to wait until october for froyo id rather deal with edge on at&t then eclair and no CM
This is my second Samsung android phone, in both cases,
I wasn't satisfied with the way Samsung handles their customers,
the only reason I gave them another shot is because that
product looked promising.
My first galaxy I7500 ended up with 1.6 when samsung decided
they no longer working on it because it cannot handle android 2 (which drakaz proved that was a lie)
My second handset is their flagship, wtf? why should I flash this expensive pos all day long in order to get the advertised features working?
The same goes with my samsung T240 lcd screen and it's software which doesn't
support windows 7, one year old screen!
I'm tired of this company, I will never, ever, buy anything from them - gonna
swap it with dell streak at least they have western standards.
Samsung should kick some asses.
I don't know why you bothered coming on here, you want sympathy? The only feature this phone really has had consistent issues with is GPS which I think is overblown by the community as is.
Other than that, I really don't understand where you are coming from, or why you have felt like you've needed to flash the phone daily. Just because there is a new revision of the current ROM you're using doesn't mean you have to have it. If it works well enough just wait until the development cycle reaches a stable release.
I've had this phone for quite awhile now. I flashed unleash the beast for fun, and when 2.2 came out, I flashed that. I couldn't be happier, this phone can handle a lot. I do miss cyanogen, but that isn't sammies fault.
Please, outline your issues more clearly.

My main issue is the GPS, overblown? it's not working for me at all,
it's not usable, not when driving a car.
It works for the first time and then the performance decreasing, Tried everything - Stock Rom, froyo, I9000 roms, cog roms, jupiter fixes, the "secret" gps settings,
everything - driving my car on 35 mph and it shows 0.
The phone itself has great potential, good hardware specs, blazing fast, it can run many applications at the same time, pretty good battery awesome screen and it looks good, but it's not enough for premium product, if you ask me.
We don't even know if Samsung is going to fix it, maybe they'll release the fix
with a new product.
Not here to get sympathy, just saying we don't deserve that kind of treatment,
Samsung is not apple, and we're not blind followers.
Update: Just before I flashed it back to stock rom and selling it
I gave my cappy one last shot - Cog 2b5 with jupiter 6 without touching lbs settings -
well, it works outdoors, I'll take it for a ride around the block with my car and see
how it goes today, tomorrow and one week from now.
I still hate Samsung though.
damn.. i just paid my Captivate at ebay.. now i'm seeing this..
anyone want to protest this?
The GPS issue is not overblown. It has been, and continues to be, a huge issue with this phone.

I agree, GPS is definitely not overblown. Samsung really shouldn't have let this get out of product testing without functional GPS. If Samsung treats Galaxy S users as poorly as they treated Behold II and i7500 users, and we don't get updated past 2.2, I'm never buying another Samsung ANYTHING in my life.

Unless you're giving up on navigating capabilities - Don't buy that phone, just don't, it has really pool gps reception and we don't know if samsung can or
will fix it some day, they don't give a #$$# about us.
Besides that, the speaker volume is pretty low.
If you don't need the GPS feature, you may find this phone awesome - I need

Ok, really mature, I'm just a whiner, my 700$ phone (yeah we don't have at&t contract here) gps doesn't work, and I'm a whiner because your house

All the other posts about broken gps that were posted by other whiners, all the

Even this one as well:

Really mature, what are you, 12?
There's a chance GPS will work on bicycle, since sometimes it works
when i mount it to my car's front windshield.
Okay, I personally like samsung and think that the GPS issue is overblown, but that's just my take on it. Ever since I flashed froyo my gps has been dead-on within seconds. I think I can safely compare it to my tomtom. I loved my samsung katalyst when I had T-Mobile, and I love this phone as well. And as for flashing constantly, I think you just have the "flashing disease" Which I also have.
And if you want a phone that won't "frustrate" you, go buy an iphone. Maybe you can jailbreak it and do something snazzy with the icons.
The Cap is a fine device. It's not the best and definitely not bug-free, but it's a great device. I went hiking with my friends last weekend and my GPS worked just fine. My friend's Motorola Droid's GPS didn't work. +1 for Cap, -1 for Droid. Now hush while I try to get 3 stars on every level of Angry Birds.

Yeah, I like flashing, I admit, but it get tedious when
you can't solve basic feature that should come out of the box.
Dell Streak maybe, but only after investigating it's problems deeply, if any,
if not, I will wait, it sure won't be samsung again, they lost one customer for good, seems like I'm not the only one got frustrated from their products

I wish I could enjoy playing games after knocking my head on the steering wheel
because I lost my gps reception and got lost, stuck inside a traffic jam
driving the wrong way.
+1 for angry birds though (I found Raging Thunder 2 addictive as well).
Aside from the battery needing to be drained a few times to get actual battery life from the phone, i've had no issues. Second day i owned it, loaded 2.2, GPS works faster than my 3GS ever did and now rooted with cognition-I may end up keeping this phone afterall.
Also, CM6.1 looks promising.
Not to say the streak is bad, i'm sure it's also a good phone but I wouldn't expect the kind battery life i want. The only thing that would make me return my captivate would be if the Desire HD is announced state side.
Using stock JH7 and GPS works fine. Not great but fine.
And even at that it works way better than my Touch Pro 2 did, and thats an HTC device
(I dont trust most custom roms at the moment because in my experience they introduce more bugs than they solve)
Since some of you guys report your GPS works properly, I started wondering,
maybe the cappy's navigation capabilities are better inside the u.s?
I don't see any reason why, beside the ntp settings inside gps.conf,
which, I've changed to europe and verified the replay time.
Anyways, didn't have good reception inside my car, so
I flashed it to back Eclair, again, I-9000 jg8 this time with reorient 1.3
(pain in the ass), GPS worked pretty good outdoors,
gonna take my car for a spin around the block again.
see what I'm talking about? this is the second rom flash I did today, I'll
keep you updated, maybe it will help for those who live in europe/asia/middle east.
If it will work good who knows, maybe I can try installing cognition 2b5 over this one, instead over the stock, see if it helps somehow.
So I picked up my Inspire this morning. Here are my initial thoughts coming from a Captivate with a custom ROM (where everything, including GPS works perfectly).
Screen: better contrast and brighter colors on the Captivate. screen size doesn't make that much difference.
Weight: Inpire is HEAVY compared to the Captivate. And bulkier.
Speed: Inspire is faster. Loading maps and Earth for example
Apps and Widgets: in most cases, Inspire wins hands down. Email and contacts are so much better IMHO
Camera: Captivate takes better pictures and has anti-shake. Inspire has better post production enhancements which makes final picture better on the Inspire.
Video: Captivate wins hands down. Was a replacement for my regular camera. Inspire is choppy, especially if you are moving. HTC doesn't have thus right yet.
Video player / playback: interesting one this one. Stock video player app better on the Captivate (much). But using 3rd party, like Rockplayer, is much better on Inpsire. Still nothing as good as Core on my HD2, but that's another story! Should be better than it is on Inspire.
Typing: both are excellent. I typed this on the Inspire landscape and its been a while since I didn't feel fear at typing something so long on a screen.
Sound: Captivate wins hands down. Inspire is a major disappointment after the Captivate, for both in call and speakerphone. HTC still needs to fix this.
Data: no question Inspire is faster where I live (NY).
Boot speed: same. Slow.
Battery life: too early to say. I had a custom ROM which meant 3 batteries a s day on the Captivate.
Battery door: WHAT THE FU## WAS HTC THINKING? Inspire is a disaster. Feels like I will break it every time I open the door (and with that small battery its inevitable that I will need to do so). No way you could change that on the move. Madness.
Overall: Inspire is a better overall experience. Since the day I got the Captivate I have tried to make it have the look and feel of HTC Sense! But I will miss weight, screen brightness, camera, video and sound of Captivate.

Over all, I agree. The battery is not much of a concern to me ad I charge at my desk at work and have a car charger, though. Same goes for sound. I am either in my office or our datacenter. In my office, I can hear the vibration in my pocket of my jacket sitting on my coat rack. In the datacenter, I hear nothing but three hundred servers and large san arrays.
Those are really the only areas we differ.

@OP Thanks for putting this up. I'd like to hear from more people who jumped to Inspire from the Captivate!
On a side note... would you rather be inspired? Or captivated? Seriously, these phones are getting some epic naming schemes! Oh wait...
I want to add that this is the first time in a while that I feel satisfied with a device out of the box.
I don't feel i need to tinker with anything...
OK that parts not true really, is it! I HAVE to root it so I can sideload, remove bloatware and tether for free. etc. here we go again...

I'm thinking very seriously about calling AT&T and asking them to switch me to the Inspire. I've had 2 different captivates and this one has random shut downs and a crap GPS, just like my first one.
I'm Inspired!
Hi folks. After having 2 Captivates and both of them being buggy, I decided, hey I'm still within the 30 day return policy with Costco, why not? Plus I heard from many disgruntled folks about how Samsung is hard to deal with. So, I went and got the Inspire and its like night and day! The display, the calender, the email, not to mention the boot up times and speed are all above par compared to the Captivate...I'm very happy with it. Now to find a case!
I made the switch and am never looking back

Well I am coming back from one day on the dark side...
On a whim yesterday I went to AT&T store and picked up an Inspire. Tonight after work I will be taking it back.
The big deal breaker for me was that it doesn't support BT voice dialing, to my knowledge none of the HTC droid phones do??. The "enhancement" has been hanging out there for a year or better and it's not fixed. I tried the stock voice dialer, and ones from multiple other sources but it just wouldn't kick off the VD from any BT device.
You can root the Inspire (read downgrade ROM and root), but then have to install a diff ROM (the only one for now) since the root process breaks the sound and the source I'd bet will be a few months behind so you can't yet "play" with it like you can the captivate. Big thanks to attn1 though for the work he's done to progress it as far as it is, ON LAUNCH DAY.
All in all I agree with the OPs opinions and findings above and it's not a bad device. That being said I have been able to overcome most if not all of the issues with the captivate since there is SO MUCH development being done around it. I've had/have 3 of them. Sent one back for sleep death, have two now, one as daily driver and one as a dev phone and neither of them have any real issues.
A lot of people have had issues with the captivate I know but for me it's a decent device and is a lot more mature for someone that wants to have a toy as well as a phone, and the captivate just "feels" better to me. Not feels better in my hands... but the whole experience is just better for me.

I would say give devs a chance on this phone, it is still brand new. I remember the early days of Captivate development, there was a whole bunch of nuthin'.
As for BT voice dial, I have heard good things about Vlingo in car. Give it a shot, at least.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I know things will progress with the device and it won't be long before there will be ROMS, Kernels etc. I just learned my lesson of not getting a device too soon.
I actually tried Vlingo and Choice Dialer... IMO they were horrible compared to the voice dialer on the captivate and they also didn't work with my BT in my truck. I have a BlueStar 2010 in my truck and it works great with the captivate to initiate calls from the OnStar buttons and use it purely via voice. I couldn't get it to work with the Inspire unless I physically touched the phone first, which is the point of my whole setup. I can simply get in the truck and make or receive calls without ever touching the phone. It's no reason whatsoever for anyone else to shy away from the phone, that's just a deal breaker for me.
Huge upgrade. Much better battery life + gps. And sense is so much better.

Gotcha, I know what that feeling is like. I went the the BB Bold 9700 from the 3GS. I hated it overall. Wound up going back to the iPhone.
Which is really sad for the BES administrator...
I just got back from the corp store with my Inspire!!!
Now to figure out the best way to sell my craptivate.....
I want to see some nice side by side photos of the Captivate vs. Inspire... Front, side view, back, etc etc
All you guys switching from the Captivate, how much are you paying? I talked with AT&T this morning and they said I would have to wait until April and then I could get the Inspire for 99 dollars plus a 75 dollar equipment fee.
I got the Inspire for my wife and I want it for myself ...... So if there is something I can do to get it faster, that would be great.
After seeing all these "I'm leaving" threads, I'd like to do a little experiment. It's quite obvious some of you bought the G2X thinking it would be the perfect phone, void of any major flaws.
I'd like to compile some data and find out what device the G2X replaced for you and also if you are bonified happy with the G2X.
For me, I came from the Nexus One (which I still have and that is now collecting dust), and I am very happy with my G2X. My particular device has difficulty maintaining UV while sleeping and also has some minor backlight bleed, but I am still very happy with my purchase.
BTW, the reason I posted this thread in General, is because all the "announcement" threads are also located here.

So far, none... I guess I missed them all before they left.
I came from the nexus one as well and am happy. Only froze on me once, no reboots and you only see any screen bleed if in a dark room and a black screen. My only complaint is my data seems to lock up after using it a bit and I have to resort a minute or 2 before it works again.

I had that problem occasionally with my Nexus and also with the G2X now. I think it's more of a problem with tower load than anything else.
I also came from a Nexus One.
I love this phone. Mine is rock solid. Kinda feel bad for everyone who seem to be having so many problems with theirs. Although I can't help but wonder if the problems are actually that widespread or if its a very vocal minority.
I came from the HTC EVO and I am very happy with the G2X. The G2X, in my case, only have a slight light bleed at the very top corners, other that, everything else is bugs in the software that will eventually get straightened out.
The EVO...was definitely the worst phone I have ever owned based on physical quality control.

Believe it or not, but that's the first time I've ever heard someone say that... Did you try multiple devices and get all lemons, or just settle with your first one? I have several friends that have EVO's and love them... given they aren't what you'd call geeks though. Maybe the EVO really was too mainstream to be accepted by geeks like us.
On that note, maybe the G2X can also be placed in that category, albeit at a slightly higher level... in other words it takes the geekiest geek to enjoy the G2X despite it's flaws.

I came from the Dell Venue Pro...a Windows Phone 7 device. Not new to Android...having had the Cliq, My Touch and the Nexus One...I ordered my N1 about 2 minutes after the site went online that day
I am still very happy with my Dell, and WP in general. But I am estatic about my G2x. No buyers remorse, no regrets
I came from the G1 lol.
Huge improvement however the g1 had way better GPS and battery life.
I've not experience any crashes our reboot but I did experience a few "battery overhear" issues

LG G2X Running Cyanogen 7 #50
Came from the HD2 running CM7. I loved that phone...and now I love this one. I've only had two reboots...both times shortly after plugging it into my laptop (connection?). The only other complaint is the the scuffs and the small chip out of the glass from dropping it three times. Stupid me, I had no case or screen protector; and the concrete isn't kind. Anyway...I love it!
You know... I remember when I got my G2X and I tested the GPS on the stock froyo rom. It locked in seconds... I'm thinking the GPS problems will all be fixed with a new set of drivers.
WOOO! Thought I had a problem phone since I was not getting any data and after tmobile removed all data connection, and re-added, all is well again. This is coming from not getting ANY data the last day.
This phone is now the beastziLLa I thought it was. No issues here other than battery life which seems to be random on my end (pretty much no drain overnight, but does typically last the entire day for me).
Great phone! (coming from a rooted/modded HD2 which I still love and dont know what to do with it, anyone looking for an HD2?)
Peace!
I came from a mytouch 4g...but had a hd2 for a while...and so many other phones...g2..cliq2...sidekick 4g...but this phone seems to be what I was looking for...I'm a phone person so ill soon get the sensation ..
But I still love this phone..
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I had a MT4G which was an excellent phone, never had any issues with it. Despite its flaws, I love my G2X equally though.

Just realized we're from the same city! Wow...
I came from the G1 too. Ran everything since CM5 to Froyo By Laszlo. Too bad the dev's test phone blew up. He could have kept the development going. Right now I'm on my 2nd G2x, because my first one had a screen defect...and a dead pixel...and GPS issues...and random reboots...It pretty much sucked.
I desperately needed a replacement. But I wanted to give the G2x another try because I like the G2x overall. I'm not quite liking the Sensation yet, even with the features it has over the G2x. The date number for the broken one was 5-06-2011, and my new one is 5-14-2011. My replacement certainly works better, but I don't think I can flash ANY of Faux's kernels onto it. I haven't tried Trinity yet though.
Other than that, it works perfect. GPS works, Wi-fi, no reboots. So far 5 hrs off the charger and it's at 71%. It's a toss-up. You have a chance to get a good one or a bad one. But if you get a good one, it's a keeper.
I came from whats in my sig had that phone for 2 years and loved it Bought my g2x on launch day. Totally happy with the phone I did get one replacement 6 days in due to major screen bleed. New one has it in the extreme top corners but nothing I cant live with. I have had 3 reboots but the phone was full operational by the time I picked it up so again nothing I would complain about. I didn't have much hope for battery life as battery technology has long since been behind the curve in advancement. I average with features turned off and moderate use (look at news 2 or 3 times a day the occasional youtube video search for wire schematic, constant texts from the wife) about 11 hours. Now with all the features on GPS, wifi, and such and the same moderate use about 6 or 7 hours. but if I add in an hour long charge sometime around mid day everything is perfect. It's a bad ass phone, I am happy with my purchase and with the Dev support I see roaming in here I will probably sport the G2x for the next 2 years lol.

That is so cool! What a small world! Nice to have a neighbor on here
I came from a G2, loved that phone because of the easily removable battery door, hardware keyboard, and LED light. However, I am very satisfied with my G2x even though I miss those three features.
My previous phone was the Nexus One. I was EXTREMELY happy with that phone. Best phone I have ever had by far. Before that was the G1. That phone eventually got slow and sluggish and the Nexus One never did. It was smooth from day one up until the day I had it a week or so ago. I don't really regret selling it since I technically got something better, but i'm not sure how much more I like this phone right now.
It's great as far as the look of the phone. It's a fast phone. But the GPS not working is a huge turn off right now. I don't use it a real lot, but I use it a small amount at work when driving. The GPS was extremely slow and sluggish the few times I tried using it. It would sometimes take a little while for the GPS to start as well. Aside from the GPS, I haven't really had any other issues. It has restarted a few times that i've actually seen, but that isn't a huge deal to me. The battery life has been pretty good.
I gave up my G2 for this G2x and, I haven't had one problem with it.
I do miss my G2 but, my wife has one now if I want to go back to it.
First off this isn't another comparison to the G2x thread, but more of a Thank God I switched for the sensation thread.
The sensation Is gorgeous. At first it looked funny to me, but then, it started to look and feel like my old N1 (the back anyways). I love the design. The shell that completely cases the screen is awesome. The way their back is half the phone is incredible. Only thing id change is id put speakers on the bottom, I loved that about the G2x.
Speed is awesome. Yes its not as wham bamm boom boom like the g2x fast, but it is consistent in speed and its plenty fast enough considering the amount of recources the phone is using,( I.E. Sense and bloat). Like someone else mentioned also, its almost as if the apps on the sensation load faster, respond faster, etc. That could be due to the extra .2 ghz i guess.
Camera completely destroys the G2x. If camera was your strong point on the g2x, well the sensation has just as good of app for the camera and takes a pic a hell of a lot faster than the g2x. Although I think the G2x FFC is light years ahead of the grainy Sensation FFC. G2x actually took sweet FFC pics.
The Video camera is great. I love how if you get out of focus at any point, just touch the screen and let it refocus. the g2x wouldn't refocus worth a turd.
GPS is also better than the G2x. At first g2x was good, but then it just started taking longer to get locks.. Pissed me off. The sensation so far is a steady 5 seconds.. My tracks was also very nice. SO happy
Battery. Honestly Ive never really seen a difference in any of my phones.lol From the Htc touch, tp1, tp2, n1, vibrant, hd2 etc. They all seem to have the same general heavy use time (constant) but so far IMO its about the same is my G2x, but I was one with great battery on the g2x so that's saying the sensation has it good.
screen is awesome as well. WE all know there are 2 types and honestly I could really care which I get. Its not the selling point to me in the phone. Anyways its nice. The 4.3 really don't feel that big from the way they cut down on surrounding material beyond the screen. They fit it very nice into a little for factor and IMO the design of the back is how they achieved this.
This is my first sense device. Ive never been a fan cause it was to bloated and just wow. Sense 3.0 seems nice. Theres a lot to customize, but things are very organized and laid out nicely. Im still kinda learning the ropes, but all around I think its a darn stinking good UI, YETTTTT is a little hard on the battery.
Damn Damn Damn, Did I say Damn? I wish we had root. I need Screen shots, remove bloat, and download some of those cool apps that I didn't know even took root, until I re downloaded them and it denied me access. lol Who knew root was so important. lol. Although Im getting along without it.
Reception is good. My g2x struggled here and my sensation does much better. So 2 thumbs up for that shiat stew.
General bugs i've noticed are Just a ****ass piece of dust under the screen like 5, but honestly there so small that most people wouldn't (I read the smallest line at doctors that they dont even use on the test, just did if for ****s and giggles) see it and trying to get it replaced would be dumb since they probably wouldn't see it and Ive got all together a flawless device. I also never see them, period. Unless I'm in the sun and got all the other dust off (which is hard cause it instantly comes back, and even then, if you screen has em on em anyways, who cares about a few underneath unless it grows) and searching I cant see em. There is the Wifi bug, but I never experience it. you literally need to block the back, but it wont just do it anytime, its only when signal is weak for me. Almost like they got the DB vs Bars wrong, (if wifi uses even DB). Other than that. I have nothing wrong with mine.
The g2x man. Started out ok. GO to market place while on wifi, and it kicks you off wifi although still shows the wifi bars. Basically it just switched to data until you toggled back. I hated how the browser barely scrolled, to go down a long page you had to finger fuk the **** out of the screen. The camera was not the best for a 8 mp, and the video was pretty choppy. Then theres the screen bleed that at first didn't bug me, then it just was noticeable. My phone was solid though other than those issues, no reboots, until about 5 weeks later. Then it would happen probably every 2 days.
All in all if anyone is on the fence. Don't be. I was, I wanted to think my G2x was the **** and a software update would make it all better, But why wait? That still may not even fix the issue anyways. If your looking for the better phone by far all around? Then the sensation it is. EASY
Its actually nice to have a nice reliable phone. SENSATION FTMFWWWWWWWWWWWW
SORRY FOR MISSPELLINGS, PUNCTUATION, ETC. Im no college grad
I know a couple ass holes over in the G2X forum who won't appreciate this. As you know, I have both devices as well and prefer the Sensation over the G2X. There are a couple guys over in the G2X forum that will defend that thing until it blows up. They don't want to admit something else is better than the phone there stuck with for a couple years.

And as JRwin knows I also have the g2x. I havent been able to do a side by side comparison yet because I traded one of my G2x's for the sensation and the other one LG had for repair. It's on the fed ex truck today. I do notice though that the g2x was a lot faster but to be fair it's running vanilla android and it was overclocked. I kind of do miss my G2x though and am looking forward to getting it back from LG today. The only issue I really had with my G2x was screen bleeding. It was acceptable on one (the one I traded) and really bad on the other that I sent to LG for repair. I think they are both great phones(if you get a g2x that doesnt have tons of issues which seems to be rare)
I really do love both phones. The guy from phone dog I think put it best. The G2x is a Ferrari that looks like an ugly car and the sensation is like a BMW 5 series, really nice looking and also a good performer but not as fast as the Ferrari

Maybe once you go back to the G2x you will realize sensation ftw? or maybe thats just your experience. Either way, great post. I also said to a lot of people before that guy said that, " the g2x is a muscle car with no bells and whistles and the sensation is a luxury car with bells and whistles just not as fast as the muscle car". lol
very true?
Also I think the route you go is great. Send in for repair instead of waist another store device and it will probably have a issue as well. My sensation is issue free other than a couple specs of dust so if I ever get bothered or it gets worse. Im doing that. Sending it in. I want this phone. lol

Ive tried cm7 up to build 55 before dumping that DUMP. CM7 was buggy shiznit. Brightness cant even be changed. lol Gps bad, in landscape screen sensitivity crap, and lets not mention the 20% off battery meter even after it was apparently fixed.
GB on the G2x will not be released for a while, and will bring more bugs.
For real, go in landscape, and try and touch the bottom of the bottom letters. lol they dont respond. Something wack with that phone.
I've been using the Verizon Fascinate (Galaxy S) since launch. When the G2x came out, I got that on launch day to check out T-Mobile and a potentially awesome phone. The G2x was okay, but it didn't feel like a full step up from my Galaxy S series phone. Then it got a little buggy and I didn't have confidence in it. I returned it and cancelled at the end of the 14-day window, because I felt the Sensation may give me the step up I was looking for.
I received my Sensation in the mail yesterday. Honestly, I'm ready to tell them to port my number NOW and cancel Verizon, but it hasn't even been 24 hours yet. I'll be patient and see what issues arise over the next few days as I know some issues take a while to surface (based on what I've read). Even so, the Sensation really is an awesome phone. As already written, I wish the speaker was somewhere else like on the G2x, but that's a design flaw most phones seem to have nowadays for some reason.
I also didn't imagine all the issues LG/T-Mobile are having with the G2x. Things have been real shady since the phone was launched. I'm real glad I jumped off that boat when I had the chance. There doesn't need to be any hate between any phone users - even if they use an iPhone. You have every right to love your device and dislike another. That being said, the Sensation definitely feels like a winner... but it is too soon to tell for sure.

Yeah, I have to agree about CM7. I didnt have too many issues with CM7 but being a CM7 user on other devices I could tell for sure CM7 on the GX2 still had a long way to go. I was actually running Faux's rom the last week or so I had it and it seemed the most stable for my daily use than any other G2X GB rom.

Everyone that defends the G2X always does so with caveats. A phone should just work. Every high-end phone's going to have quirks because of all the crap that's crammed in to them. But at a minimum a phone should:
- Only turn off and on when the user wants it to
- Dial and receive calls consistently
- Bluetooth should allow you to store profiles, connect automatically to paired devices, and provide consistent sound output
- Wi-Fi should accurately find locations, connect to them quickly, remember them, and connect again automatically
- Allow you to switch between 2/3/4G and Wi-Fi without issue
- GPS should work consistently
The O2X/G2X have problems in all the above areas (except for the seven seemingly perfect phones all the apologists own). I don't care if a phone has eight-cores clocked at 3.0ghz if it can't do the above well its speed is useless. The O2X/G2X will be remembered much like the Yugo and original Hyundai Excel when all is said and done.
The O2X was released with the same issues the G2X is suffering. LG's had six months to develop fixes. The same people that broke it are the ones trying to fix it. I hope for all its fans sake LG eventually gets it right but based on their track record I'd bet against in Vegas if I could.
Samsung's been monitoring issues with the SGS2 and has so far rolled out three updates to the ROM and four updates to the camera firmware in six weeks time. I'd guess from history HTC will be just as attentitive. Why would/should it take LG six months of customers begging and being inconvenienced to get a fix out? Their competency has to be questioned.

I'm 24hrs in to my Sensation. I have both yes. I got the Sensation because my son has it. It looked like it was worth the try.
I can't say I'm as impressed with the Sensation as you are. I probably won't keep it. But, that does not mean its not a good phone. It's impressive in its own right. Some things are better than the G2x...other things, not so much. I like Sense. I like the Camera speed, I like the stupid locking ring. I like the snappy performance, after setup. And the thing I liked the best, when going to a web page, I could read it right off...without the resizing required in the G2x.
Locked or unlocked bootloaders hold no important place for me. The Chefs on XDA are great. They do wonders with everything. Unlocked bootloaders are their domain. When the Sensation is unlocked...they will jump to it.
To me the Sensation feels off. I was a Nexus One fan and this does not feel like that. Close...but enough difference.
Right now there are enough good things between both phones to make everyone happy. If people feel they cannot wait for the fixes and updates on the G2x, the Sensation is a great choice. I can't blame them for wanting to have a phone that equals most of the expectations they had when they paid good money.
To each their own. I refuse to belittle anyone for 'jumping ship'. Its only natural to defend your own choice. Its also natural to ridicule those that do not agree with your choice. Both phones are good. It's like arguing which playmate of the month is better....Miss/Mr. January or Miss/Mr. February. For me, Don't worry, you be happy....ok?

This is an excellent post. I expect my phone to work like my Desktop or Laptop computer, turn it on and everything works, with the G2x it has been hit and miss!
WOW.. So I sent in my g2x because this one had really bad screen bleeding. The other 2 I had (one mine, one my daughter's) didnt have it nearly as bad as the one.. anyway.. I got it back today. On the repair form it said cause: scratch, action: replaced case (housing)
umm the phone didnt have a single scratch on it(it was brand new!) so they did a repair that didnt need to be done, and my issue still remains. I call them, he gets the repair facility on the line and they tell him screen bleeding is normal with TFT displays. I tell them I have two others and while they have it and it's acceptable, the one I sent them was very severe and protruded to the middle of the screen, not just the corners. Plus if you hold it on an angle you can see a white light bar across the top(which was not present on the other two) He gave me a supervisor who is now trying to get a supervisor from the repair facility to see if there is anything they can do in this case, but she doesnt think there is anything that can be done.. really LG?? really?? First and last LG smartphone I buy..

I feel exactly the same way. The horrifying thing is that Google's deciding between LG and HTC for production of the Nexus 4G this Fall. I hope folks from Google read XDA. The O2X is selling for 20% less than the SGS2, Sensation, and Atrix in Europe. I wonder why?

All good points. It really doesn't matter if someone does or does not have those issues. If you do, its important to you. Period. Only you can judge just how important it is.
Stop with the caveats....like it or not....move on...or not. Period.

I ask this purely out of curiosity, not to be antagonistic. How do you use your phone that any or all of the above would be acceptable? I'm starting to think there are two different groups of phone users here: 1) phone as a workhorse, and 2) phone as a hobby. I consider myself a part of the first group and my G2X became history (at great expense) when it rebooted itself in the middle of a conference call to Asia. As a hobby, I could see where the idiosyncrasies of the G2X would actually make it fun but as a device to depend on, not so much. To each their own I guess.
