[Q]How to get the most out of a kernel? - General Questions and Answers

Hey every if this or something like this is already I've tried the search and only got kernel downloads.
My question is how to use a kernels features? The only thing I know how to do with a kernel is too install it and I do nothing else with it lol.
And I know that everyone's experience with kernels is different

What would be the best rom?

Which rom should I flash to my nexus? CM7 or is there a better one? I'm all about speed and flexibility.

Honestly there is no "best" rom. Some like cm7 the best, some like stock the best, some like rom xxx or yyy the best.
You will get 100 different answers if you ask 100 people. The best rom is the one that works best for YOU. Honestly what I would do is (assuming you already flashed cwm recovery) back a backup of your current setup, flash a different rom and try it out. Don't like it? Restore your backup. Try different rom/kernel combinations and see what works best for you and your phone. There is no "best" overall, just whats best for you.
Yea its best to experiment with all of the different roms and kernels then find what you like best.

I'm using Miui 1.7.1/netarchy 1.3.4 cfs and its very snappy.
I'm using MIUI 1.7.1 also but I have Netarchy 1.3.6 on mine overclocked to 1.2gh and my phone is very fast with good battery life.

there is no best rom, its all about preference. with many roms to flash, you could try and see what works for you. to me, i got hooked on miui 1.7.1 and netarchy kernel.
the beauty about NS is you will find many roms for it, have fun with it
A good indicator is to see: "Nexus S Android Development" forum,
there are the officiale rom thread, you can see the most popular rom there (number of posts per thread).
It's not an answer but an indicator of the popularity.
Thanks to all of you for your input. Looks like i'll try Miui with the netrachy kernal. Let y'all know how it goes.

Alright, let me explain what a kernal does, so you'll understand why exactly they don't work.
The kernals main and only feature is to maintain the hardware and how the phone works, entirely. It's not actually Android User Interface (AUI), but what makes the AUI work and give the usability of the phone to the user.
Each phone has a different base kernal, making it impossible to used on a phone with different hardware. The only kernal available for AOSP/CM is the one that it comes with. If you choose to use the Sense ROM's, some of them work with the OC/UV kernal RomanBB posted linked here.

[Q] recommended ICS kernal?

Hello all. I just installed the latest version of ICS by EOS. Now I'm just looking for a good kernal to run it with. Now I saw this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478971
I'm not sure if I should use this kernal because its in early development.
So could anyone point me in the direction of a good working kernal? The one about seems legit but I don't know if its stable or not.
If you are using the Team Eos 1.0 you don't need a separate kernal they have their kernal imbedded into the Rom
...
Yea I noticed that they have they're own kernal. I flashed ICS using clock work mod. I was just wondering if they're was a better kenl available
I don't know if it's "better" but Rogue also has a kernel (with an e) that you could take a look at.

UV/OC CM9 Kernel on MIUI?

Ugh... I really don't like asking questions, so let's keep this short.
Am I able to use the CM9 kernel on MIUI? Specifically, Lithium's build.
I know MIUI is based on CM9, but on some phones, MIUI needs its own kernel.
Thanks for the help!
You can try it out. For science.

This is my only decent phone. I'm not going to risk hard bricking...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
do a backup, u know the drill. An incorrect kernel/rom combo in this case won't hard brick, maybe a soft one, thus the backup. Hard bricks only occur when u flash a kernel that isn't for our phone, as these are device specific

new kernel dev needed

Since we lose intX and his kernel, anyone can take over his kernel and continue to update? Lets take a look the dev forum, except mohans rom and kernels , almost all thread is cm ,aokp roms.
Don't think you're gonna find help this way. Since the only incentive is interest, you'll just have to wait.

I've been thinking about building a custom kernel.. there are some extra modules I'd like to include anyway.
I've built the Linux kernel thousands of times, including cross compile for arm and custom patch sets etc.
But for some reason when i tried building an Android kernel a few months ago it just wouldn't boot no matter what. So don't get your hopes up.
I'll give it a shot though when i get a chance. You mainly want some extra governors? Under volt?
I'd rather start with a fresh cm base and merge in specific things as i go.

Ill be doing kernel builds and theming soon. I can do rom builds but we have enough devs for that at the moment with the rookie thread bringing in quite a few new devs. I have done things going on with my 4 daughters but as soon as I get that worked out ill be moving to kernels. Will be about a month before I have my first custom kernel released.
