i rooted my Nexus S following the instructions on the following link
http://jaxov.com/2011/02/how-to-root-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-nexus-s/
on a final note it stated that:
"At this stage, you have successfully rooted your Nexus S on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread but your phone will continue to replace ClockworkMod Recovery on reboot. To prevent your phone from doing so, follow the steps below:"
what's the perpose of ClockworkMod?
i'm asking because once i brought my NSN back up, it started syncing with Google, and re-installed all my apps that were removed automatically.
if i rename the install-recovery.sh and flash ClockworkMod, would that create a problem with my backup on google?
i do not want to install diffrent roms, i just wanted to root my phone to get advantage of a few apps out there.
thanks in advance

1. You need cwm to flash roms. Also you need it to backup and restore incase you need it.
2. Renaming install-recovery.sh will only stop your android os from restroring your original recovery instead of cwm. It will not mess up your backup from google.

i did the change of thename, but the funny thing is when i rebooted my phone this morning, the name changed back to install-recovery.sh

It could be that one of the thing you flashed modified that or some sort that's why it's not restoring the stock recovery.

You could just flash a new aosp rom. That way you're as close to stock as possible plus you get more features.

i flashed infin1ty and i like it...i'm debating if i should try NSCollab
have you tried it, any feedback?
Nscollab is pretty much cm7 but with minor changes. You might like it. I actually liked it. But I'm more into stock so i used an AOSP rom.
Just make a nandroid then try it. You might like it.

i can't find nandroid on the market
where can i get it,
Thanks
Nandroid is a backup of your phones current state.
To make a nandroid, boot into clockwork recovery, then go to backup and restore. Then select backup.
This will automatically backup your current installed rom, kernel, apps etc.
Making a nandroid is always recommended before flashing a new rom, just in case something goes wrong while flashing, you can restore back to your previous state.
Sent from my Nexus S c",)
Nandroid is like going back in time to a previous state. Takes a while to do.
I personally don't do nandroid backups. But as a beginner, I'd recommend it so you can lean back on that.
The only nandroid backup I currently have is of stock 2.3.2.

Oh and I forgot to add. Your radio is not backed up by nandroid. But no worries. There's a guide in the android development forum for flashing new radio and where you can also download all previous radios.

why do i need to update radio to NSRadio-XXKB3
currently i have I9020XXDK1
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884
KD1 is newer then KB3, so technically i'm downgrading...
i guess i just need more info, can't figure it out
i guess a better question would be, do i need to update the radio to KB3 from KD1 in order to flash NSCollab??
thanks
never mind,...the nscollab instructions stat to download the latest radio
next time i'll read the instructions 2ice

no you dont have to. you can flash nscollab with any radio that you have. some people have better coverage/signal on a specific radio. i think it varies by location but im not entirely sure why people get better reception on the other. you should experiment too which radio is best for you. you can use speedtest from the android market to test your bandwidth.
heres the link for the android development thread of the radios.

Update to one of the rooted ROMs. I've been running Fresh 3.1.0.2 for a while now with great success. The Netarchy kernel makes it even better. Just be sure to flash the ROM first then the kernel, if you decide to run a custom kernel.

You don't ever take anything over the air front Sprint or HTC. Download a froyo rom from here...then flash it like you flashed when you rooted the phone...then flash the radios the same way.
It sounds like you have some more reading to do.

i actually tried taking the ota then, it would downlaod, but would not install, just ended up a few times and the droid and a triangle with the exclamation point in it, did that a few times and said forget it, found a rom to flash that was done by netarchy with the HTC ota final build, and it worked perfect, so i'm happy with the outcome.

Have any of you guys flashed both this and noobnl's ROM? Currently Im running noobnls and its pretty stable so for. But it still has TouchWiz. So since Boss is suppose to run stock, can any of you tell me if Boss is as bug free as noobnls?
What custom kernel does this rom have. When I check settings>about phone>kernel version it says 2.6.29. Isn't that the stock kernel for DI07 or am I mistaking?
Since Andromeda Galaxy has shown me bad battery life thus far, I'll be testing this out when I get home. Is it based off of DI07? I know it says newest OTA in the OP, but I wanna be sure.

I tried to flash this 4 times and it flashed ok. However, the problem that I'm running into is that my apps does not reinstall. I tried Mybackup Pro as well as Titanium backup. I even manually re-installed all my apps from the market. On all occasions, i get the message that everything was restored. But when I go to my app drawer none of my apps are there. I turn the phone off then back on and i get a black screen with the capacitive buttons lite up and it doesn't go any further than that.
have anyone else ran into this problem?

Guys:
Don't follow any instruction to flash this kernel on your captivate running official froyo I897UCKB1. I tried all advices and ended up bricking my phone. Luckily the unbricking method you can find.in xda saved me. But, i had to flash.back to JF6 (2.1 eclair stock) using odin3 and then went back to kies mini to get the official froyo. I am writing this for people who like to use stock froyo instead of any.custom roms. I had to waste my time because.some.people suggested a few methods without knowing it for sure. Most suggestions are great in this forum (thats how i used serendipity.for a while). But, some or one of the bad suggestions can brick your phone real bad. So, ask as many questions as possible before going with a suggestion you see. Preferably look at how to videos. If there are none out there. Then, WAIT!

With blue CWM recovery you should be able to flash CM7 with a normal flash in CWM. If you boot loop, pull battery and reflash. The gapps is all the google apps you need, Cyanogen can't include google apps in the Rom. If you download gapps through rom manager, pick the latest one. I actually downloaded gapps from the Cm7 wiki. (the link for it is in the OP for Cm7 Rom) Flash the rom first THEN gapps and you should be good.

Ya thats what I meant by normal flash lol. I know when flashing from red you need to format but, I can't remember if I did so when flashing from CM7 to MIUI or if its needed. You can try it without, and if it doesn't work then format, just make a backup before you do. I just remember the format system part is before you flash the zip a second time after a battery pull.

Hi all,
I'm an inspire noob running exist's 4.0.3 asopX version 26 and he recently said that he was going to update us to 4.0.4 for version 27. My question is can I back up what i have to the sd card, do a reset, then recover everything using 4.0.4? Or will i need to do a wipe and manually put stuff back on?
thanks
As Long as the recovery you are using is compatible with your backup, then you can restore it with any Rom you are running. Backups from CWM are not always compatible with 4EXT recovery and vice versa
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA
OK. Got it. Thanks a bunch

I don't think glevitan understood your question correctly, or maybe I don't. I took it you want to back up your apps and such, not the ROM version itself. And to restore everything back on the 4.0.4 version. This has nothing to do with clockwork or 4EXT recovery.
If he releases the 4.0.4 ROM as an update and does not require a full wipe then just install it over top of the 4.0.3 ROM. Most of the time the DEV requires a full wipe though.
Usually it is best to do a full wipe and restore user data with a backup app like Titanium Backup. But you only want to backup and restore user apps. Restoring system data can really mess your ROM up severely. Google contacts will resync when signed in.

haha Now that I see your reply I guess that I didn't get what he was asking...well, he will come back and get what he wants or will ask again...
I will say, no matter how inconsequential it seems, DO. NOT. RESTORE. SYSTEM. DATA. between major android versions. Let me refine that. I back up my playlists using Titanium Backup. I figured this was an insignificant thing and restored it when I moved from CoreDroid to aospX. Firstly, it didn't restore my playlists; secondly, I had to factory reset the phone < 1 day later.
That said, I WILL be restoring playlists and contacts going from AR26 -> AR27. I'll report either here or in the dev thread if it causes problems, but I have 6 g(mail | apps) accounts plus my FB account, and it takes me a considerable amount of time to get the duplicates regrouped.
Hope I helped. BTW, the free version of TiBU is pretty good, you just have to confirm every install. To me, it was worth it to get the pay version so that I could restore all my apps without confirming every one (right now I have 45-50, that's a lot of confirmations). It's also nice to be able to back out of a buggy new version of an app, or to be able to go back if you don't like the new version (I'm looking at you, FB.)
oh i see now. looks like i really lucked out cuz i flashed AR27 and his 4.0.4 then did a recovery. I thought it was a bit odd that it still said 4.0.3 so I came back here. Doh! okie dokie. I'm redoing a wipe and clean install and I'll just push all of my apps back from my google account.
Thanks for all the pointers about Tia Backup
edit: cant type

Young, check here. Remember to thank the OP.
I really appreciate all the help guys but I've flashed both the InspireMod 0.5 and the one you both provided the link for. Unfortunately it still doesn't record sound. I am trying to send a message via MMS by recording it. But when I push record it gives me an error of Internal Application Error. I'll try downloading different apps to see how they work. Its just kinda odd the stock recorder doesn't work
Thank you all for your help.

Huh. I'd tell you to check with eXistz in #aospx, but he's away most of the time.... it's like he has one of those "life" things or something.

You should have placed this in the ICS Q/A thread. Do NOT use the development thread for questions. thats why the restriction is in place, so people learn the ropes a bit before they are allowed in there. I would redownload and do a full wipe and reflash. And try to record your mms BEFORE you put all your apps and stuff back on there. Need a clean environment before you can dig deeper into this. Only thing you should put on after installing is inspiremod before doing your mms test. Id love to help test with ya, but i always remove the default mms apk from my phone :/
OK. Now I know. Which messaging app do you use?
