Hello guys. I am new to android coming from windows mobile. Where is the file or folder for the ringtones? With the windows mobile, I can navigate very easily and look for files. This one (android) seems to be hard to find.

You need to download a file explorer. I use ES File Explorer.
Also if you're looking to add your own ringtones/alarm sounds/notifications then add a new folder to the root of your microSD card & name it Ringtones/Alarms/Notifications & put the sound in the respective folder.
As for finding the ringtones that are currently on the device? I have no idea
Ah yes of course, as above you need to download a file explorer.
I personally use Astro, but check out the market and try a few and see what suits you best
Why they don't ship one install I don't understand, but I'm guessing its too stop people meddling under the hood too much as if anyone would eh
You also need S-OFF to change anything on the /system partition. As already said just create a folder on the SD card called media and stick your MP3s, etc. in there

Hello everyone. Although n00bs aren't allowed here, I do want to ask you a question that might be very n00bish. And maybe a little inappropriate. Or asked in the wrong section of this forum.
But here it goes: I want to try and edit a savegame for a game on my HTC Hero (baseball superstar 2010). So, first I tried to locate where all the files for this game could be installed on my phone. I did not succeed.
But with help from this forum, I found out that I might find the files by using Astro File Manager. I can use this app to click on the .apk from the game, that I have on my sdcard, and then choose the option 'browse file'. There, I find a lot of files! So, the first problem is solved.
The second problem is, that I cannot edit any of the files I then find. And I cannot find a file that has the datestamp of today, or yesterday, when I last played the game. Shouldn't there be a very recent file with the saved game data in it somewhere?
For me, it would be a lot easier if I could browse the apk on my desktop with a simple explorer. But if I hook up my sd-card to my pc, I cannot open the .apk. How can I accomplish this?
I hope I gave a decent description of my problems, and hopefully anyone can help me with A) finding out which file to edit B) how to open or edit this file and C) what to edit!

Use 7zip to open/extract the .apk file. You can use winrar too, but I like 7zip better. I'll try to find a link in a minute, or you can always google it if I don't post back quick enough for you.
Your questions are reeallly noobish ;-P
Apk files store libraries and other static files of your applications - there you could find images, texts, code, etc., but not runtime data like savegames. Look into /data/{package-name}/ - you could find package name in many places, I think it's in Settings -> Manage applications, but I'm not sure.

I have done something in the meanwhile, and that is: buy the real deal from the market. I no longer seem to have the .apk, but that should be no problem. Now the real game is officially installed onto my phone.
But ... where? I have tried looking in /data with my file managers, but they say that the folder is empty! So... where are my apps installed then? They must be on my phone somewhere. Do I have to root my phone in order to see anything in the /data/folder?

I'm not sure, but I think so. This directory is read-protected, so apps can't steal data of other apps. And I've mistaken: it's /data/app/{package-name}.
Hmmm. Do you know a good way to do that? I have a HTC Hero with the 2.1-update1 firmware (so my phone tells me!).

I think I'm correct in saying yes. I use RootExplorer and can see my apks in data/app, but if I use AndExplorer I can't.

Hi There,
I've opened another thread to stop the clutter, but: I have installed Root Explorer and used (I thought) Universal Androot to root my mobile phone. It did install Superuser, but when I open Root Explorer, I don't get a prompt to put it on the superuser list... so nothing seems to work. Do you know what I should do, and how I can do that?

You might be best searching your phones forum for a solution unless someone can offer you help here.
Iirc, savedata and settings would be in /data/data/com.gamevil.bs2010/
probably in a folder named "files".
start by looking in there.
other apps would be in /data/data/[packagename]
Hey community, I have just picked up one of these tablets in the hopes that I can use it for some slick new ways of remote desktop and various other work/play related functions.
I've been reading the forums here for the G the past two straight days. I tried flashing my system to TnT 2.0 found on the forums by the one and only Roebeet, Alternate GTab Firmware - TnT Lite (stock based, adds the Marketplace), but I am having issues.
First off I'm wondering if when you say root do you mean inside the /sdcard folder? because that is where Windows 7 is defaulting me to when I mount the drive. This I feel is the cause of all my issues because I thought the update.zip and /recovery were supposed to be on root. Maybe I'm just confused and need some explanation.
If there is a thread I missed that explains all this for a newbie let me know.

yes the root is what pops up when you mount it to the computer, just copy and paste. root means do not put in another folder just on /sdcard
I'm a newb here, but live in an AIX environment, so I hope to help.
System root is /
The onboard storage (16gb) is mounted as /sdcard
The user micro slot is mounted as /sdcard2 (side note: hoping I can get the vold.fstab to mount sdcard2 under sdcard)
I believe from reading through the TnTLight thread, that you want to put the files under /sdcard, not system root.
Somebody will correct me in short order I am sure.

That's correct. Root is / but you want the upgrade files and folders in the /sdcard directory.
Ok thank you all for tha clarification. I am following the direction correctly then. I have placed the two files into the correct 'root' directory and when I hold down power and volume ^ it does start to run the flash, but then it simply shows me the ! in the triangle and restarts. When I go in to look for the files I put there they aren't there.
Should I try and just use Clockworkmod? Or maybe someone who isn't a programmer has made this work and has some more helpful hints. I am in this communities debt as I really want this to be a cool tool/toy for me but if I can't do what I need to I'll bring it back.

Did you unzip the file you downloaded from the link here? So that you have both an update.zip file and a recovery folder? Sometimes people just rename the downloaded file update.zip and put it on their sdcard, and then get the exclamation point. The download file needs to be extracted first, to give you an update.zip file and a recovery folder, which you then copy to /sdcard (which will look like the root directory when browsing in Windows).
Great question Jacindc, and yes I have extracted the 2 files update.zip and /recovery to the root of my tablet. I am trying to remove and set my G back to some factory base to try this process again. Let me ask you a question in return. Can i use the built in ES file explorer for this process or should I use Astro or does it not matter?
Also what are these files? DiskCacheIndex11214.tmp I have several of them in root and I'm not sure if they are from my mess ups or what.
Ok update, I've found a /mnt dir on the root and inside there are duplicate folders that exist on root such as /sdcard, /sdcard2, /asec, /secure and /usbdisk....I'm confused why there is this duplication. I guess I must confess I attempted to root the G using; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843376 but when I tried to then run Titanium backup it would say no root access and I didn't see the superuser app in the drawer like I did on my Moto droid when I rooted that.
Wondering if I should try a complete wipe and type using the vanilla loader found on the forums...another question, does Windows 7 recognize your device as an Nvidia Harmony?
Last edit/update for tonight me thinks...it would seem I've borked it pretty bad because I can't get the thing to copy any files over. It says I have in Windows, so I safely remove hardware, and then unmount and go look in the download dir or the root and nothing...so not sure what I did but lol I got this one I'll return it and get another to try again I guess.

I just bought an Viewsonic G-Tablet with Android 2.2 and the latest update from the official site. I'm some kind of disappointed with the interface. From what I have read I can install other stuff on it with best and quicker interface.
I'm very familiar with PC & Mac's OS, but with the Android I feel like a dummy.
I would greatly appreciate if:
1-you tell me which one is better?
2-give me cleared & details instructions on how to do it.
Please do me this favor, because I feel like this tablet is a good tools and I wish to keep it.

Most people are first installing CLOCKWORKSMOD RECOVERY and then putting TnT-Lite 2.X.X lately.
I've searched the forum on this, and unless I'm using the wrong key terms (very possible) I havent found any info contributing to this.
When downloading an app from the Android Market/Amazon Market, where exactly does the *.apk file get saved to? I like to have all my apk's in one area when flashing a new ROM, so I can just install them one after another (apps, widgets, live wallpaper, etc...)
Also, can anyone provide me with any info (preferably some link) in regards to Android's file management system, ie discussing in detail what folders hold what information and what that information pertains to?
One other question, what exactly is the difference between a filepath like:
mnt/sdcard & /sdcard in regards to opening/saving a file to/from those locations??
Apologize for the multiple questions, just thought Id save posts in doing so, and sorry if the information this is readily somewhere in the forum.

Here is a start:

If you are rooted, use ES File Manager or Root Explorer or the like
to open up the file system.
Go to /sdcard and you will see the file system. Most of the file managers
will let you toggle to / and you can see the file system from the root side.
Literally, that's the basis and if you're a lot more knowledgeable than me
you can work down from there to the various sub-folders relating to the
OS functions.
Hope this helps get you started to where you want to go.
IMO, I don't ever get into the file system like I have done with Unix or Linux
in the past. Most of what I have needed to do under Android I just do using
one of the file managers like free Root Explorer.

P. S. -- When you hook the tablet to your PC and look at the "G:"
drive or however else it shows up in Explorer -- you are looking at /sdcard.
I understand what you are saying, and I am already familiar (atleast Id like to think so) with the main directories (sdcard, sdcard2, etc..) of the file structure, and what info. they hold. My tab is already rooted, and I have Root Explorer, ES FileExplorer, and Wifi File Explorer installed.
What I am looking for is a detailed description of what each folder (default Android structure) is for, and what information is stored in them.
For Example:
/acct: This folder holds...
/data: ...
/data/data: ...
/sdcard: ...
/mnt/sdcard: ...
Guess you could call it a Definition/Guide for the entire Android Directory Structure/Format?
Like in my initial post, where is the default location that downloaded apk's from the market go?
Sorry if my post was misleading, I'm just trying to gain a better understanding of the Directory structure just so I can better navigate through the various file managers and more efficiently find what I am looking for.
I would think the Android Developer's Site would have exactly what I'm looking for, but I haven't been able to find it. Thanks for your input though!

WP7 Root Tools if your device is Developer unlocked and Interop unlocked. But what good is a file explorer for WP7?
WP7 Root Tools is what you want! The version 0.7 alpha is installed on My phone. You can find it in this forum.

you are able to have a look in every folder. so you might be interested which files are stored within your apps, or you want to change some config files, or load dlls for further analysis on your pc ;-)

I've used Heathcliff's WP7RootTools 0.9 to extract a file from an installed apps IsolatedStorage. The app in question was installed from the Marketplace, but I want to modify some of the files it's saved to it's Isolated Storage.
I extracted the file I wanted to edit by using the Explorer utility in WP7RootTools to copy the file to the "My Documents" folder, and renamed the extension to docx. From there I could simply go into the Office Hub, where the file was now listed, and emailed the file to myself.
I have made the edits to the file, but now need to get the file back into the app's Isolated Storage. This is where I have now got a bit stuck
I've tried copying the file to SkyDrive, and using the Office Hub to download it from SkyDrive to my phone. The file downloaded and is cached on the phone somewhere, but the file location, according to Office is not "Phone". This is normal, as Skydrive downloaded documents are not saved to the "Phone" location until you open the document and do "Save as".
I cannot of course open the downloaded file, as it isn't really a .docx file. Files loacted in the "Phone" location show up in "My Documents" in the WP7RootTools explorer. SkyDrive downloaded documents I have no idea where they are located?
Can you guys help? Does anyone know the path to location of SkyDrive downloaded items on the phone. If so, then I can easily just use the WP7Roottools Explorer to copy the file back to the apps Isolated Storage.
Is there a better way to copy a non-Office file back onto the phone?

Options:
1. Do exactly what you've been doing, but save as .txt instead of .docx. The phone can still open this, even though its probably a binary file, and save it to the "Phone" location. Then you can copy it back and rename it.
2. Use an app that gives direct access to the phone's filesystem from the PC, like TouchXperience+WPDM, or Root Webserver (see my sig)+your favorite webbrowser.
3. Use any other way to get a file onto the phone, such as emailing it to yourself, using IsolatedStorageexplorer, or putting it in a XAP files and installing that file. Then move the file with WP7 Root Tools.
I recommend approach #2.

I used TouchExperience.
1.On my Fully unlocked Device(I assume you can do this with root tools), I installed a file manager that gives full access to the device.

2. I installed TouchEperience on my PC. After giving the WP7 app, Root tools rights, it should show most of the file system(on the PC) but, not all of it. So I created a new folder in \Windows (temp).
3. On the Phone, I hunted down the file I was looking for from Isolated Storage, I copied it to the \windows\temp folder.
4. Used the PC TouchExperience and browsed to \Windows\temp, there was my files, I copied them to my PC. USed the File Explorer to delete the files in my \temp folder(to make sure they were gone).
5. I edited the files, copied them back to \Windows\Temp on my device via TouchExperience on the PC. Then used the file explorer to copy them back to the Isolated Storage.
Note: The file explorer I posted a link to is GREAT, it can even edit files (basic text editor) in Isolated storage. I found a way to Cheat on a marketplace Xbox live game (didn't try others), right before the achivements, so they were really easy to get
I'm sure there is easier methods but, this worked for me...

FYI DavidinCT: Cheating XBL games is very risky. Microsoft often can detect it (for example, if you get one achievement that would have required getting another first) and they can and will permanently ban your Xbox Live account for doing so.
That all said... why didn't you just use WPDM (on the PC) to copy the file straight to the IsoStore of the app? So much easier...

To be honest, I only did it with a game that had an error when I got so far, so the final achivements of the game. A Game with a Known issue but, no fix.
And I just really wanted to see if I COULD do it...
I used WPDM but, the PC version even with my phone fully unlocked (custom rom on my VZW HTC Trophy) and using Root tools 0.9 to give full to TouchExperince root, would not see all the folders and would not see the IsoStore. SO I had to copy the files to a folder that WMDM could see.
Personally, the new File Explorer above is awsome, it's even got a editor in it, I didn't even need to go through all that......
