Does the sensation do 5ghz wifi? - HTC Sensation

Does the sensation support 5ghz wifi? It didnt see my 5ghz network for some reason.. strange if it wouldnt since the mt4g had it.

My Sensation isn't picking up the 5ghz from my router either.

Its probably a software thing. My G2 picks it up but my Sensation doesn't. Downgraded to 2.4 for now

I don't think it has a 5ghz radio... I had the same problem and looked up the specs, could not find anything about 5ghz anywhere.

.............

Damn this stinks. 5 is better range..

Well, not exactly.
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelessfaqs/f/5ghz-gear.htm
"The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. Thus, 2.4 GHz networks cover a substantially larger range than 5 GHz wireless networks. In particular, the higher frequency wireless signals of 5 GHz networks do not penetrate solid objects nearly as well as do 2.4 GHz signals, limiting their reach inside homes."

True but as long as you have good signal 5GHz has less inference as I understand it.
I have not seen the 5GHz option on my G2x, will have to try again.

Potential trade-offs either way you go, but bottom line the Sensation doesn't currently handle 5Ghz.

What a crock of crap. 2.4 is so saturated.

Virtuous Unity
I currently use stock rooted MT4G, but have started to enjoy the Virtuous Unity Glacier ROM that gives us Sensation's abilities. I have noticed that normally the Glacier finds 5ghz w/ no prob, but w/ Virtuous Unity it's gone. I suspect a missing device file in the ROM build, but don't know where to find what's missing, or how to re-integrate them. Any ideas? I have both the stock ROM for TM Glacier and the 1.27 Unity ROM.
Spec:
MT4G unlocked, rooted, and nand for reversion.
Factory Glacier and Virtuous Unity Glacier 1.27

Sorry to bump this from the dead, but does anyone have any proof that it only has the 2.4 GHz band for WiFi or that it's a software issue?

Have you tried turning on wifi hotspot? Maybe it uses 2.4 for standard data and 5 for creating a hotspot? IDK, just throwing it out there.

It is not a software issue.
It simply does not have a 5GHz radio...
One hint is also that on the specs page you only have 802.11 b/g/n and not 802.11a which is 5GHz only...

Are you sure you were seeing 5Ghz access points? I have yet to hear of any dual band device...

MT4G definitely picks up 5ghz N I am using one now....S4G does not

The G2 and the MT4G only do b/g/n but they can both connect to 5GHz WiFi.

After checking, I've seen that MT4G is also 802.11a capable (not only b/g/n like our Sensation) which means it's a dual band device.
Sensation on the other hand is not.

so wireless-N is not = to 5GHz? and My iphone4 also can't pick up my router's 5GHz

Wireless-N

Is anybody experiencing issues with Wireless N connectivity on the Captivate? Everybody and everything is telling me it can do Wireless N, but it wont see my Wireless N network at all! I've done everything i could to the router to make it as simple as possible for the phone to see it, but it never works!
Anybody know what the deal is on this? Seems to me like it doesnt have Wireless N capabilities.
2.4 Ghz band only. If your router is 5 Ghz your Galaxy won't see it at all.
2.4 works for me. Using a Linksys WRT320N from Sams.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
works fine with netgear wndr3700.
However, it does get slightly less speed than my laptops on speakeasy speedtest

There we are! Thanks for that info! Where did you find that? Maybe i overlooked it everywhere i've seen it.. But thats the case! Mines running 5GHz right now, thats why its not seeing it, i changed it to 2.4 and it worked beautifully!
We, or at least I, found it in the specification for the chipset that runs wifi/Bt/gps wherein it specifies the frequency/speed of the N to be N-150 which means 2.4GHz bands in conjunction with the b/g connectivity. Ah if it were only a/b/g/n... then it would have worked at 5GHz

802.11n 5GHz band NOT supported

Looks like the 5GHz band of Wireless-N is NOT supported. Why would Moto drop support for this? Looks like another step backwards. Does anyone think this could be turned on via software? I know the EVO 4G had it's entire Wireless-N radio disabled by HTC out the gate and it was re-enabled via software by XDA Devs.

I believe that they used the Wilink 7.0 chipset which would have 5ghz support. However it's my guess they didn't want to include a 5ghz antenna for size and cost. Just my guess but I doubt seriously the Razr will work 5ghz if this turns out to be the reason. The Wilink 7.0 chipset allows for all comm on one chip and no external GPS chip with lower power.
I went 2.4 N on my router so it goes through walls better. 5ghz would not have had the range I needed

5ghz Wireless N?

Does this phone support 5Ghz wireless N?
I don't think so as "a" is not listed on the wireless specs. I believe "a" is the 5ghz
So, you would have N at 2.4gz
5ghz has mixed reviews for Smartphones--
Correct, no 5GHz 802.11n available.
IEEE 802.11a is nothing new, it's an old protocol dated from 1999 but running on 5GHz.
But since they like to make everything backward compatible, as soon they have the 802.11n on 5GHz, they also include the 802.11a.
(To bug more, the next standard is 802.11ac and will be exclusively on 5GHz.)
The One S don't seem to have the 5GHz enabled, but it's a design choice by HTC as the Snapdragon S4 support the 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz (according to Wikipedia)
htc site doesn't list the "a"

Wireless "a" is irrelevant to wireless "n" whether its 5Ghz or not.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda premium
agreed a although it operates around 5gz is inferior to and different than n which operates on MIMO technology (multiple signals and antennas)
just haven't seen a phone spec list with n and 5ghz, not that there isn't one
just thought manufacturers used a to denote 5ghz whether n or not--maybe wrong
either way 1s doesn't have it

As I said, when the device run the N on the 5GHz band, they also include the A for some stupid backward compatibility that nobody cares since the A is as relevant as the B is. That's why nearly all N (5GHz) devices have A listed as well. Therefore, if A isn't there it's more likely that the device don't have the N (5GHz).
The evo 4g lte must have 5ghz then..
I wonder if we can't enable 5ghz, I know on the incredible we hacked WiFi to enable N.

I think that WiFi-N 5GHz need a different antenna configuration =\

P5100 a/b/g/n - Can't see my home 5Ghz network

The specs indicate that the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has a/b/g/n capability.
Why is it that mine doesn't see my home N (5Ghz) network? (the router is broadcasting the SSID and I can connect with other devices)
Anyone else experience this? or know the reasoning?
Thanks.
Why don't you try to change that wifi router?

802.11 N can use 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz (depend on hardware spec), and usually 5 Ghz spectrum are used in some high end / outdoor router. Almost all smartphone and handheld device use standard 2.4 Ghz, so you can set your router to use 2.4 Ghz and "n" network.

Help getting wifi 5ghz

Hello.
I an having an issue with my sm-g955fd phone. I need to use the 5ghz frecuency for wifi and I can't seem to make it work. Flashed Renovate Ice 9.5 and tried many different csc's but none enables 5ghz wifi. If anyone could point me to which custom rom to flash or csc to try. I would be most greatful forever.
Thanks in advance.

How's 5ghz work when on stock OS?
Does it support the 5ghz wifi (hardware wise)?
I know most devices are still on the 2.5 or 2.4 (don't know exactly which).

Yes of course it does. All Samsung phones have used 5GHz for years.
If there is a problem getting an S8 to work then it's either a (rare) fault, or due to the custom ROM.

All S8/S8+ variants include support for 5 GHz WiFi. Are you sure you have properly set up your AP? Does the 5G connection work with some of your other devices? Try getting closer to the AP. If it does not work by then, it is likely a hardware fault.

As others have stated Samsung phones and other makes of high end phones have supported
2.4GHz and 5GHz wi fi for several years.
Although I wouldn't expect your problem to be caused by a custom Rom else other users of the ROM would likely have reported the problem , I would suggest putting a standard official Samsung rom on your phone at least until you get your wi fi functionality.
I would suggest a free play store app like wi fi analyser to easily determine which wi fi signals are seen by your S8+
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer
Also be aware when you do get 5GHz working you will notice higher data bandwidth than with 2.4Ghz but less range from your router to your phone before signal drop out.

I did some research and on gsmarena I found that Galaxy S8+ uses the Wi-Fi 802.11 (https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s8+-8523.php)
Went on Wikipedia and it seems that this 802.11 support communication in the 900 MHz and 2.4, 3.6, 5, and 60 GHz frequency bands. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11)
Also, I checked my home network and the router is working both on 2.4 and 5, however, the 5 (which is set as another network) can't be used y any device (no laptop or smartphone).
I don't want to create confusion here, but it seems this 5ghz frequency is not as usual as the 2.4 one. And by checking my Internet connection speed on the 2.4ghz frequncy, it looks like there is no advantage of using the 5 frequency (my Internet speed on wifi is close to the Internet speed via Lan cable).

802.11 has a large number of subcategories
802.11a
802.11b
802.11n
802.11ac
and a vast number of others.
These have different frequency allocations and different channel bandwidth.
I could have explained better that in some cases 2.4Ghz will give adequate throughput (at or close to your internet speed)
802.11g is a 2.4Ghz standard with maximum of 54Mbps
However if internet speed is much higher as in my case then I get benefits from using
802.11ac 5GHz standard with single link bandwidth up to 500Mbps.
I would agree that wi fi using 5GHz probably not as common usage as 2.4Ghz which can have additional benefits as less potential for interference from nearby wi fi that uses same frequency range

I use 5G all the time..have high speed internet so see big diff. Since you say none of your devices can connect to 5G, you should play around with channel used..know there is a diff between US and Europe and channels used.
If you see same speed from reg wifi and hardwired lan line..5G will not make a diff.
Thanks to everyone i deffinitely cant get it to work. The reason I need 5ghz is cause i am using a slinstudio device wich works only on 5ghz frecuency and i cant connect to it. So i tried other 5ghz networks and found that i cant connect either. I guess i will have to change phones or something but its a shame i cant get it to work.
Another potential solution is to check your router's IP blocklist. I had the S7 Edge and now the S9+ and apparently the phone may spam the router with UDP requests making the router think you are performing a DDOS attack. Clearing the IP your phone is using from the block list may resolve the issue.
S8 on 5ghz WiFi
To get your device to run on 5ghz WiFi all you need to do is ...
Open WiFi connections ...
Add new network ...
Type out your SSID followed by a (space) and the number 2 ...
So ... if your SSID is homeWiFi ... you need to add homeWiFi 2 ... the pass key is the same and won't need changing

Your router is likely using a channel assignment that isn't available to your client devices, check the ETSI standards for acceptable use on the 5GHz band if you're in Europe.
