Free Wifi/USB Tether - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

If you want to get free tether and avoid the 15$ charge. You are able to trick T-mobile by changing your user agent in your registry. I have tested this and it works. It does encounter a few problems with loading some web pages because it thinks that you are surfing the web from a mobile browser.
Steps to take (windows)
1. Press the windows key + r (open run prompt)
2. type regedit (registry editor)
3. Windows Vista and above click continue to allow it to open
4. navigate to ---> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/InternetSettings/5.0/UserAgent
5. You will now see a registry called default, do not touch this one, click Edit --> New --> Multi Value String
6. Name this new string Version
7. Right click it and click modify...
8. Now type Android 2.2 And click OK
9. Now close out and you can successfully use your Mobile AP(Wifi Tether) and your USB Tether.
(Note: If you are having problems while browsing from your dedicated internet, just go back into the Registry Editor and delete the Version string. You can always add and delete it as you need it.)
If I posted this and everyone already knew about it, I am sorry. I have not seen this topic come accross the forums.

Isnt that just an alternate tether method? This is just so tmobile cant block you by trying to upsell the tether plan to customers. I was able tether my phone for about 2 months and then randomly bam... Blocked and forced to pay 15 dollars a month extra. This is just a way around that. If that app does the samething then my bad lol.

Sounds like it'd work, but wouldn't every site you visited become mobile?
For example, youtube.com would change to m.youtube.com?

Is it normal for T-Mobile not to charge you for tethering? I personally haven't done it, but my sister did for a few months already. Our plan never got charged.
I actually asked a T-Mobile rep, and they said as long as T-Mobile doesn't detect it, you won't get charged.

Yes i know. They do not start blocking your tether until they realize that you have been using a computer for about a gig of data. If someone would have let me know that this bypass was possible i would have never started my 15 dollar tether. Like i stated before this is simply informational.

the phone virgin mobile triumph, why people can't take the time to spell out words i will never know. (yes i know my punctuation sucks.)
Let's get back on subject, but still, calling it the VT is a bit retarded, it's called the Motorola Triumph, so you would call it 'MT', like everyone else....
Theres a build.prop you can flash from the android forums that changes your phone model so you can download hulu and other apps.

Isn't that what b_randon14's mod accomplishes? It's available alone or as one of many package deals... (the one that makes you're phone act like a thunderbolt in the market).
Forgive my grammar, Swype is messing it up purposely.
Edit: this indeed works.

I apologize for being retarded. Will this allow my MOTWX435KT to watch Hulu on the Dolphin HD browser as I was able to do with my Atrix? Or does it just let me use the Hulu app to watch Hulu+ ?

No, forgive me for being stupid. I assumed the "Hulu Hack" would allow Hulu+ to show up in the market. I messed around with the build.prop quite a bit but for whatever reason Hulu just don't work. Not for the Droid X or the EVO... at least, not my spoofs of them.
In Opera Mobile in Desktop mode (O> Settings> Advanced) I can view the Hulu site okay... I think. No promises though.
Thank you for the suggestion. That is the same method you have to use in the Dolphin browser (settings-desktop). When you try to view a video it says that it does not support this device. There was a "hack" that was cooked into many of the roms for the Moto Atrix that allowed you to view the videos. Here is a link to the page that got the devs started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016183&highlight=hulu Thank you very much for your input.
I'll look into that, but in the meantime I'll still push Opera Mobile: You see, it's totally different than the stock browser core, and it's even part server-based.
So the spoofing it does isn't just a fake user agent (like Browser, Dolphin, Miren etc), it could actually be convincing Hulu your phone is a legit desktop computer. Regardless, I haven't gotten it to work, so your input would be valuable too
Edit: I looked at this and I'm still a little fuzzy on what exactly he did to fix the Hulu problem. Flash player isn't included on the Triumph, so updating it is a no-brainer. SQLite3 is included in most ROMs. I don't understand the following command so I'm afraid to use it
Code:
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db "UPDATE carriers set preloaded='false';"
This doesn't seem like it's relevant to CDMA/Sprint/VM at all, since it's about APNs.
Code:
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db "INSERT INTO carriers (name, numeric, mcc, mnc, apn, user, server, password, proxy, port, mmsproxy, mmsport, mmsc, mmsc2, authtype, type, current, preloaded) VALUES ('AT&T (FREE TETHER)','310410','310','410','wap.cingular','[email protected] CINGULARGPRS.COM','','CINGULAR1','','80','wireless .cingular.com ','80','http://mmsc.cingular.com ','','-1','','1','false');"
I'll scratch my head for a while.
Thank you for taking the time out to look at this. Sadly, I am just an end user of all the great work the Devs do. I am always more than happy to test things out as I have more balls than brains .
Yeah, sorry... I was testing out the Hulu desktop site and it kinda starts loading with Opera Mobile, which gave me the impression it might work. Then it claims I don't have the right device. And I mean heck, even Youtube is fooled by Opera Mobile.
Unless maybe it works on wifi or something...
Edit: I overlooked this. If you have said balls, perhaps copying the libflashplayer.so file from the location specified.
2) Copy libflashplayer.so from sdcard to /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib using root explorer and make sure the permissions for libflashplayer.so is rwxr-xr-x or chmod 755 the file.

Wifi Direct in Captivate

Ok I saw this option in the android system menu to turn on wifi direct, but I couldn't find anything further than that. How do I actually transfer files thorugh wifi direct??
Update:: MEthod for wifi file transfer from one phone to another.
Youu'll need ES file explorer on one phone and Swiftp on another
1. Toggle Wifi tethering on, on the device from which you will ransfer files.
2. Now connect the other device to this AP created by the tether.
3.Now on the same device(the one connected to the AP)start Esfile explorer and got to the ftp tab
4. Go to settings>scan. Es file explorer should now automatically find the other phone,
Just wanted to bump this thread....seems like no one's interested but I think wifi direct is awesome! and i know our phones are capable just that the right software is needed.

Open your browser and type in about:debug and hit go.
Then hit the menu button and select "settings".
Scroll down to the bottom where it says "User Agent" and tap that, selecting Android, Desktop, or iPhone.
Still wont work for some websites. Check trigger errors in the debug output for more information.

Depends on the browser. Opera, Dolphin HD browser and Skyfire allow agent switching. On my Opera, with the agent set to Desktop everything is like my laptop............I hate sites in mobile mode !! I used all the above browsers and the latest Opera has stuck with me. Dolphin is also great, but Skyfire is a little iffy for my tastes. Haven't used Firefox too much.
My 2 cents.
EDIT : Oh yeah, I remember why i like Opera..........Adobe Flash rendering in Opera is very good..........I watch entire live sports events with no hiccups.

[GUIDE] How to bypass T-Mobile's tether block using Firefox

Hello everyone, so I recently finally got blocked from tethering by T-Mobile after a long time of sucking it out of them by being rooted and on a custom ROM like all of us here.
The way they know you are tethering on their network is by the User Agent that is sent to them by your desktop/laptop computer browser. When they see that a regular browser is accessing their network, that's when you get the infamous T-Mobile Hotspot Screen we all hate.
I've recently discovered a Firefox Add-On called User Agent Switcher found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/?src=search
Download it and install it to Firefox. Then download this (right click, "Save as") http://techpatterns.com/downloads/firefox/useragentswitcher.xml
Go to Tools>User Agent>Edit User Agents (a window pops up) click on "Import.." and add the .xml file you just downloaded.
Then pick a User Agent that resembles the Sensation webkit and BAM! Free tethering for all of us.
I'm using it right now
NOTE: If you use a Googlebot User Agent, you will be able to tether and always load up full webpages instead of mobile versions. - Thanks to The Archangel and chadwick3nser for discovering this!
You can also do the same with chrome.

What are you using to block the IP address? I was thinking just changing the IP to not be the standard DHCP that the phone would give you still shows it coming from another MAC address on the same connection and would be obvious to the write sniffing rules?
I realize this isn't a requirement I've been using the UA for a while from canary but I easily see them stopping this workaround w/ better sniffing rules.

This is a very bad advice as pretending to be a googlebot may get you either blocked or banned from many websites (especially if they use ZBBlock) as this behavior is rated as a spammer/bot activity.

Okay I've been tethering fine for a while on FF, but T-Mobile finally blocked me yesterday... I figured out that it was the second I started to watch a YouTube video. Guessing they're able to see activity on my cell account at the same time as my login is accessing YouTube and put 2&2 together...? (That may be obvious to some...)
Anyway... I may try the user agent spoofing but this is really aggravating since I'm traveling right now and the internets in my hotel are $10/day.

Anyone figure out how to use netflix while spoofing in Firefox? I've been settling for Amazon Prime instant video, but I'd love to have Netflix back. With the UA spoof, Netflix won't play movies. At least I haven't figured out how.
This method no longer works for me

The easiest way yet to get tethering. NO decompile/compile necessary!

Hey guys!
Thanks to scrosler's brilliant discovery that all it takes is a simple "Yes" response from a server to enable tethering and seeing his method of modifying the TetheringProvision.apk file in oder to replace the entitlement.mobile.att.net with his server I just thought why not simply edit the HOSTS file in /etc ???
So I fired up root explorer and opened /etc/hosts, then put as first line:
74.208.15.145 entitlement.mobile.att.net
save/exit
That's it !! Now I was able to go to my own server and look in the log file what exact URL the phone is calling and found it's calling /mhs1
So I put a index.html unter /mhs1 that just reads "Yes" *with no newline afterwards!*
And voila!
Hotspot activates!
P.S. I encourage everyone with the possibility to do that to use their own server. Maybe Scrosler will be so generous to host the /mhs1 index.html on his server as well and provide his IP address. This IP here is a test server that is probably going to go offline in about 1 month.
And it gets even easier...
Using any of the ad-blockers out there (I use AdAway), just enter the HOST entry in the manual redirect list. Now it's not even necessary any more to browse to the /etc/hosts file
See attachment!
Or you could just use this. Even easier.
