I'm sorry if I'm telling people what to do but this forum is ATM to messy.
The moderator should clean it up by pinning the guides to the top and making a "Rom bible" thread where we could locate all the different ROM's.
FAQ thread should be made as well.
I was hopping that we could help the admin with this and not just complain about the situation. So here I start (Please fell free to correct and add things):

ha ha i think that was funny. Functionally this is very useful. What aplhabet priority will you give to arrange it. Just continue with what you have started I hope the Mods take note of this.
Yeah i agree with the op, i hope mods will take care of it!
All you had to do was ask
I'll get this done today or tomorrow. Appreciate the help in getting the links together. I don't have a Defy, so I'm not familiar with all the procedures etc...
I'll definitely do an "FAQ" type thread for all the main guides.
I'm not 100% sure about a ROM list as that is something that will always be changing and require update all the time. I think it may be easier just to let users find their own ROMs?
Opinions?
That would be cool!
Maybe you could include a link to the wiki page. It would than be easier to keep the ROM list up-to-date.
PS: You can find the Defy wiki-page at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Motorola_Defy
I added the links to the wiki page.
OK, seems good, so the ROM part is done aswell.

It would be workable but it would need two things - ideally a Mod dedicated to the Defy section or at least actively monitoring it and secondly when someone starts a new thread about a ROM, to PM said Mod so that they weren't having to constantly trawl through the section to check for them.
I also think it would be useful is all thread titles were formatted similarly - if it's a ROM, start with [ROM]; if it's a guide, start with [guide] etc etc.
That and trying to keep question threads out of here, have them all moved to the general section.
In fact, now that I think about it, isn't it possible to have it so that any new threads hidden until authorised by a Moderator? That way any threads purely asking questions could be weeded out immediately and, indirectly, the/a Mod would end up aware of any new threads that needed to be added to a FAQ/sticky thread and also fix any badly-formatted title.
I know it would potentially add a slight delay to new threads appearing if there were an Mod actively monitoring the Defy section it shouldn't be too bad.
Sorry for just suggesting ways to increase your workload but I'm just thinking out loud...

I'm happy to keep a list of ROMs up to date if I get help in being informed of any new ones etc....I visit all my allocated forums MANY times per day (probably more than I should, even at work ), so that's not a problem. I'm always just a PM away, any time of day or night, unless I'm asleep
Because I visit all my forums so often, there's rarely a time when there are any question threads in the dev section...I like to move them as soon as I see them, so thats another issue I am managing no problem.
I was considering implemeting the same method as you suggested, using the [ROM], [Guide] etc tags in each thread title as they work well in other forums. I'll create a sticky with more information tonight after work.
The Defy forum has become a lot more populated over the last month or so, which is why things are getting a little more cluttered, so hopefully we can all work together and keep it clean and structured
Please feel free to suggest anything else you think will improve the forums

Sorry, didn't mean to suggest otherwise.
I just wasn't consciously aware of you having been around here and also since you're managing 9 sections eek, I thought maybe it would be unfair to ask so much.
I mean, I've done the moderating thing (elsewhere) but I doubt I could've dealt with that sort of load.
About moving questions away from the Dev section, I had also wondered if it might be worth having a sub-section for questions rather than throwing them into the General section, that way it's easier for people to see if a similar question had already been asked.
But I guess most of the questions will be about particular ROMs/Guides etc and will therefore be asked in that thread, so maybe that'd be unnecessary...
Nah nah, it's ok, I know you didn't imply anything
Yea, it's a difficult one with question threads...most of them are related to ROMs or a particular ROM...and if not they are usually general enough to be put into the General forum, which is intended for general chit-chat on a device, or questions.
Some mods like to have a Q&A dedicated sticky thread in the dev section, but im not a big fan of these.
I think the FAQ/Guide sticky should help somewhat in reducing the number of question posted in the dev section.
I was thinking, some sort of Glossary/FAQ thread/post would also be quite useful.
Terms like 'ClockworkMod' and so on get thrown around and whilst there is a thread on how to install it, there isn't really anything that explains clearly to people starting out what it is.

take it easy, u might hurt ur self
ok its not quite in the right place, but no need to bite his head off.
anyway, in answer to your question, the way i removed the branding from my vodafone DS was this
http://revolutionary.io/ download this tool and follow its instructions, this will root your phone and give you a recovery tool that will allow you to flash a new ROM onto your phone.
With the phone rooted, you will be able to back up your data using an app from the market. Titanium Backup is the usual favorite.
EDIT : may be wrong about it providing root, I personally skipped the backup step as I had no data to lose, but if that is the case there are guides in the forums for obtaining root access
next look through this forum to find a ROM that suits your needs, from the sound of things you want the stock one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230029 should suit you.
download the zip file and transfer it to your SD card.
next you need to reboot into your recovery mode by turning the phone off, then hold the vol down button and power button together and selecting recovery from the menu
finally use the volume buttons to select install zip from SD card, and point it at your downloaded rom. it may take a few mins so allow it to finish then select reboot phone.
again this first boot may take a little time, but once its up you should have a debranded ROM as if you had just bought the phone new.
Add the details for your google account and redownload your backup app so you can restore your data and you are good to go
thank you very much for your help,
I shall give it a try,
by the way, will be able to install official updates on it, or will I have to stick with custom ROMs for ever?
thanks again

Nooo, not forever. Just until you get a new device
But seriously: Custom roms don't work with official updates. The trick is that most of the custom rom developers provide their own flashable updates for their roms. The difference is in the way you perform the update. There are even fairly developed custom roms, like MIUI, which have their own over-the-air updates (actually more often than official updates are coming.)
EDIT: In fact, you can switch back to a stock rom anytime and get the official updates back.

Once unlocked, i.e. rooted, you can use titanium backup or a root file explorer to uninstall the apps you don't need from the rom you are running atm.

Well, again: read around the forum a little, please. There is a sticky thread right on the top of the development section, called ROMS/RECOVERY/ROOT etc. It's a must read for newcomers. Very useful thread. There you find a link to a collection of stock roms. These are distributed as .exe files, so you can run them in windows and a simple-to-use installer will pop up and help you with pushing the stock rom to your phone. It is advisable that you double check that you are flashing the rom you really want. Someone here will help you to choose the right one.
EDIT: By the way in the general section (where we are now with this thread) there is also a very useful sticky. It's called Guide for Newcomers to Android. Seriously, it's a good read, given that you own an Android phone...

OK man, I will do that, thanks for the tips
Thanks chris5s, Ill definitely give it a shot.
This tool would help to get rid of the annoying Orange splash screen, and other useless apps could be removed as stated before.
Of course, best way is to install generic HTC European rom or custom rom of your choice.
Aforementioned tool would also help install roms, radios, etc, of your choice.
Good luck
Peace
Edit: sorry, Android flasher won't help install roms, but will help with installing custom recovery - Ext4 or Clockwork Mod - essential in s-off/rooted flashing.

no but you can read one of the many stickied guides, i charge for hand holding
simplest way , edit build.prop file , change that 2.3.6 or 2.3.7 or whatever you see , to 4.0.3 , you are now on 4.0.3 ,
What my fellow smart asses are trying to say is: don't worry, you are at the right place. Everything you need to find out about your phone is located here in this forum, but you need to do some reading in order to find it. What you are concerned with can be located in "stickies"- the threads at top of the forums which are indicated by the thumbtacks at the far left of the thread. Don't be discouraged by all the threads. What you are concerned with are only the stickies. It is in your best interest to devote the time to read through the first page of these stickies BC 1. You don't want to permanently damage your very expensive phone and 2. You will be amazed by what this little device can do once you've done a little homework.

I was trying out different ROMs based on AOKP and CM9 on my device and I have finally chose to use the CM9 one. How can I remove "boot AOKP" from the start up? Does the present of the AOKP ROM take up space in my device? Thanks in advance.
You'll need to provide more details. What device do you have and what is this start menu? What rom is it?
And it shouldn't be taking up space on your system if you have CM installed. just taking space on your sd or internal flash memory.

I have an HP touchpad and I have installed this rom in both AOKP and CM9 version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501637
The CM9 is better so I decided to keep using it. How do I remove unnecessary stuff from previously installed ROM?
The start up menu means the one with black background and blue text for you to choose which OS to boot. Sorry for being a noob

lol, no problem. Its just commonly a good thing to state your device and what your running if you don't have that info in your signature, and always be as descriptive as possible. We love to help, but it makes it hard if we don't have something to go off of
I'm assuming you have some custom recovery installed like CWM recovery. Basically in recovery you would have had to of wiped before you flashed CM or your device wouldn't have booted. If it did, then we have a miracle on our hands When you wipe it removes all little bits of your previous rom. I suppose if you are still concerned there is an issue, you could just reboot back to recovery again and wipe everything except your sd and internal (not familiar with the device if it has those), and then just reflash the rom with gapps.
As far as the start menu I have no clue, I don't own that device to know how to remove or modify it. If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with the bootloader, and you should look around for a custom one on the forums that is modded for what you want.
Anyways, this is all just basic stuff and may not apply for the touchpad. If anything, just ask in the q&a section for the device that way a dev for that device can help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1467
I know you are new here so I'll just let you know real quick before I go, each device on XDA has five subforums.
TouchPad:
General
Q&A
Accessories
Development
Themes and Apps
So in the future if you have questions, the Q&A section for the TouchPad will be the best place to ask. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind helping, i just don't know the device like your actual devs would. Good luck!

Hey all,
I've looked through threads here and I'm just overwhelmed. I had my S3 rooted on 4.1.2 but Verizon kept coming up with these updates that I could either defer for 5 days or...update. When I chose update, it took me back to TeamWin. So I redid a fresh format from the TeamWin screen (I really don't mind rebuilding my phone and contacts) and I was able to update to 4.2.2 after that but but I'm still getting that Verizon update warning.
First of all, how do re-root my phone with 4.2.2? I thought TeamWin would disappear but it didn't. So I went back to that screen and went to Download. Now I'm on a screen with the Android robot that says "Downhloading... Do not turn off target !!"
I'm not sure what it's downloading.
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section. I would be fine with a moderating moving it.
Thanks a lot!
First, this is T-Mobiles forum, you want Verizons.
Second, if twrp is still installed all you need to do is flash the SuperSU or superuser zip you can find eith a quick search.
Third, that is download mode. Only for use with Odin.
Fourth, considering you don't know these things, I suggest you read up on some of the many guides you can find here on xda.

I highly suggest you do quite a bit of reading before you start messing with rooting and flashing roms. You could very easily brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing or if you flash a file that isn't meant for your phone.

Also it is VERY important you be in the correct device forum. There are 5 S3 forums.
Moved to Verizon S3 Q&A
Verizon does not have an official 4.2.2. We are still on 4.1.2 MF1 as the official. If you have 4.2.2 it is from a rom you have flashed.

Only the S4 have Touchwiz 4.2.2 so we will assume that you are talking about AOSP roms as they are 4.2.2. Please be clear in your post so we can help you. Now to teach you about download mode it's there for you to flash stock Touchwiz back to your device via a software called Odin. Now what you just ask about (download mode) you could have Google searched it yourself and got your answers faster.
