After a month of use I finally took my Galaxy Tab 8.9 back to the shop today to get a refund. Turns out that people weren't exaggerating that slowdown you get on Tegra 2 tabs...
Anyway! I'm in the market for a new Tab now. I'll probably hang on to see if anything is announced at Google I/O (like the rumoured quad core $250 tab) but if not, what's my best bet? The 7.0 Plus on Honeycomb or the Tab 2 &" on ICS?
My biggest concern is how well the 1GHz TI OMAP + PowerVR GPU chipsets in the Tab 2 hold up against the Exynos + Mali400 in the 7.0 Plus. As long as the Tab 2 can deal with 720p .mp4 video (which the 8.9 certainly couldn't!) and play decent games like Sonic 4, GTA III and Anomaly HD, I'll be happy.
I have the SGT 2 10.1 which also has the same chip as the SGT 2 7, and I can say the 720p screen and ICS is too much for it. All the games play quite bad, even custom roms don't fix much of the lag. I am thinking of selling it and getting the cheapest Acer/Asus etc. quad-core tab.

I'm hoping performance won't be as bad on the 7inch Tab due to the much smaller screen resolution. One thing I am considering is where I can reliably purchase a 7.0 Plus from, which at the moment seems like no-where. I have purchased it from online sellers in the past and had many issues, such as bad firmware or missing IRDA blasters.

Personally (And please take this with a grain of salt as I purchased the Tab2 7.0) I would go with the Tab2 7.0. First off the CPU is easily overclocked past the Plus' CPU, so the only real advantage the plus has is out the window. The 7.0 doesn't have a rear flash, but to tell you the truth, if you are taking pictures with your tablet you are doing it wrong.
The 7.0 has plenty of speed especially after ROMing and OCing. Even without that, the tablet still flies compared to the OG Transformer I used to own. I don't know if the 10" is that much slower, but it sounds like an over exaggeration to me. Touchwiz is pretty decent on the tablet and leaves plenty of RAM (Usually around 500 MB after initial boot) to allow the device room to expand.
I was debating the two before buying and I just believe that the Tab2 7.0 is a much easier buy, especially for the price.
Oh and don't forget the 7.0 has ICS while the Plus is still stuck on HC, that's actually really big right there.
For the videos, I found on my Tab 2, some players are better at playing certain videos than others. For instance I have some 720p MKV anime files that play well with software decoding on one player, and run 720p mp4's like garbage. I then switch to the other player and the 720p mp4 runs smooth like butter and the mkv can't render.
So yes, the TAB can handle the 720 files, you just may need to find a video player (or players -- I use 3 different ones) that works for you. (1080 content though is pushing it).

Just asking if you tried 1080p mkv and what was the result. Cnet reviews for Tab 2 10 showing slow frame rates while they said they couldnt get it to work on 1080p.
Im just wondering how come a Galaxy S2 phone can play native 1080pmkv just fine, with a few 0.4 (or is it 0.2) ghz dual core. I know that processors are made by different companies, so is the Texas Instrument processor just not powerful enough?

I just tried a 1080p mkv with diceplayer on HW rendering and it ran fine. Then again I am running a custom rom.
Also a 1.2ghz exynos > 1.0ghz OMAP4.

Just to clarify you did a test on a Tab 7.0/7.7 / 2-7.0 or a nexus?

I'm trying to decide between the TF300 & TF700. I'm definitely going to watch a lot of videos (it's my primary purpose for buying a table). I'm hoping someone could help me out with something. This would be my first tablet.
On my Windows Desktop, I have a 27" monitor and my resolution is also 1980x1200. 1080p stuff looks great. But, when I play a 720p video in full screen mode, there is a very noticeable loss in clarity.
I also have a portable blu-ray player (10.1" display; 1024x600 res.). It downscales both 1080p & 720p videos. However, reducing the video's size doesn't appear to affect the quality. It still looks awesome.
Two questions:
1. Since the TF700 has a 1980x1200 display, does anyone know if there would be a noticeable quality loss when upscaling a 720p so that it fits on the entire display?
2. On the TF700, would it be possible to temporarily change the settings to a lower resolution when I want to watch a 720p video (something like 1280x800)?
I can see a difference while watching the same series episode in 720p and in 1080p on my Infinity, but I notice it much more on my 21,5" LCD. Anyway, the difference is not huge, I still intend to download mainly 720p movies, but you should probably see it yourself, as these things tend to be very user-dependent. Just go to some store with the Infinity on the shelf and try 1) watching YouTube videos in 720p and 1080p, 2) take microSD card with you, install BSPlayer Free and try watching some .mkv files prepared in advance (hope they won't bite you for that or won't cover the slot). You can format the card in exFAT.
And no, you can not change the resolution on your Infinity, it's just not how things work here.
What video apps are you using? Playing mkvs with Google Video Player and MX Player I have perfect picture but no audio, while using VLC I have audio but the video is spoiled, at least at 1080p...
Its strange... many of my 720p mkvĀ“s wont play anymore on my tf700 with dice-player.
On my tf201... no probs.
For me... the picture looks better - the colors are much better now, but i see a differnce due to the upscaling between the Full-HD and the native res. of the TF201 when watching HD-Videos (720p).
Try BSPlayer Free, guys. Just remember to use H/W rendering (it has its own engine).

You can access your nas either way free or paid, paid just gets rid of the annoying ads.

Try this with diceplayer 2.0.8

1920x1200 HD display with polarizing filter and anti-glare technology for rich color and deep contrast from any viewing angle 254PPI
TI OMAP4470 1.5Ghz Dual Core
16GB only $299, but not sure if it has micro sd or not
4G LTE 499
and $50 a year you get 250MB data per month
at 499 = TF700 = Note 10.1
wow!!!!!!! I have a feeling that the TF700 will lower its price so soon
Another thought is since Kindle Fire HD give such high resolution. I think more and more apps will optimize for 1920X1200 resolution. that's will be good for TF700 too
LOL. No.

I think specs are great (it claims better CPU than Tegra 3, and probably they mean better GPU is my guess) but in any event the big downside. My understanding is Kindle cannot run Google Play applications so you are restricted to the Kindle Market, which for most the same but not all.
But its resolution certainly gives more incentive to developers for making full HD apps.

i actually have watched a lot of shows (mostly documentary type stuff) via amazon prime instant video on the xbox360 connected to my theater system. i refuse to give comcast another dime and other cable/sat providers here really don't offer anything else enticing, so everything i watch is either streamed or downloaded beforehand.
it'd be neat to do it on the infinity, but honestly i don't think i'd choose it over the big screen in the man cave.
im not going to lie, i thought this was a joke at first.
it might as well ask "would anyone trade scarlett johansson as their wife for roseanne arnold."
Just did sum research.
I don't know how to interpret these two articles.

(ignore the ipad junk, look to the SGX benches)

IDK how our GPU does.
I know it's clocked at around 500 mhz.
Edit: The kindle uses the SGX544 clocked at 384 mhz. I'm also fairly sure that it is the original model and not the MP/MP2 model.
No need to sell, guys.
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Amazon-Kindle-Fire-HD-8.9_id7488
Another edit: Both the tegra 3 t30(not our t33) gpu and the one in the kindle hit 12 gflops.
Amazon itself says 12 billion flops which is 12 gflops.
Conclusion: do not sell.
stupid question. i love my device. kindle look ugly.
And don't forget that Amazon will be placing ads that you CAN'T opt-out of on the lockscreen on all of their new devices. Low cost devices at what cost? That, combined with no Play Store and Amazon's ROM that will be loaded combines to bring the REAL cost of the new Kindles way up.
I may have gotten one instead since it is 8.9 and I am a prime customer. But since I already have a Gold TF700 w/dock it wouldn't be worth the trouble to return everything. I like the TF700 so no reason to switch; Amazon released too late for me.
No
NO . . .

But thats why we have XDA.. My wifes original Kindle fire has CM10 on it, and it runs great. It does everything she needs...
I dont think the TF700 and the Kindle fire are even in the same ballpark to talk about trading one for the other... I may buy a fire HD and own both, but thats it.
Such high resolution on a dual-core CPU?? I don't think so... The infinity seems to have a hard time pushing all of these pixels with a quad-core - I can't imagine a dual core processor doing it any better, that's for sure!
I do like the anti-glare coating though! Hopefully, that starts a trend in the tablet world!
Besides that, about the only good news that I get from this is that more and more apps will start supporting the 1900x1200 resolution!
No way would I trade my Infinity for this particular device though...

Hey there fellow xda goers.
I'm looking for an android stick, preferably under/close to $100, and I'd love any suggestions from personal experience/research.
Main uses will be movies (dlna and straight from device) and gaming (hopefully with some controller/mapping app combo).
I love the cpu of the ouya, but not so much the size. I love the size of the gamestick but not so much the CPU. I may end up deciding on one of these two.
Obviously both of these include a controller, but my final choice doesn't have to include one.
Requirements:
- quad core
- >= 1gb ram
- USB host
- Bluetooth and wlan
- android 4+
- commonly purchased (not something cheap, badly reviewed, or obscure)
Preferred:
- ethernet (obviously gigabit is a +)
- custom ROMs/active development
- power over hdmi
I'll be researching and will keep this thread updated.

You've ticked all my boxes too. I'm currently in the same boat. Let us know what you decide.
Power over HDMi, is a very low power output on HDMi sockets, not enough to run a mini pc. Or does what you say have a different meaning?
Hi,
I am looking for an android TV stick to make my TV smarter, there are tons of chinese varieties out there with huge pricing variations and therefore I need expert advice from you guys to make my buying decision. Here are my requirements :
1). Play 1080p (Full-HD) video over Wifi on my TV via a networked Samba Share.
2). Watch 3D movies on my TV.
3). Pair my iMac Bluetooth keyboard/mouse to control the stick.
Thanks
Best bet is to wait until quadcores hit the market. 1080 doesnt work as well as it should without mods done so you can overclock. Not sure on 3D working on any that are out now.
Are there any quad-cores out there yet ? Also, what would be the best suggestion from current options.
Quad cores should start coming out this month.
