Hi,
I'm a big fan of the Desire and thought the Desire S would come even closer to ticking all the boxes, but the number of software bugs in this thing is beginning to make me feel like I have a Nokia again!
Latest issue: I try to save a picture I received in an MMS. Phone tells me my 'SD card is running low on space please delete some files'....I have a 32gb card with 1gb or so free (4% free space) and internal memory is 0.98gb free, and I can't save a 150kb jpg to my SD card because it's 'running low on space'...genius!!
Arrrgghhh!
This isn't really a software bug for chrissakes. The phone is letting you know when your storage availibilty is below 5% capacity.
I understand that is not an actual bug, it's clearly how the software is designed to behave, but does no one else think it's a bit retarded to be unable to save a picture when more than 1gb of storage space is available. It is effectively a bug in my eyes.
Do you not agree that the desire s, and probably all of HTC's gingerbread phone software builds have a disappointing number of software glitches and design problems? Coming from the desire which I found to be such a high quality product and breath of fresh air compared to previous devices, like various Nokia I owned I find it annoying and just want to highlight some issues FWIW.
Cheers.
Ok point taken. But I can't really agree about the software glitches. I've been using mine fairly intensively for a couple of months now & continue to find it smooth, fast & responsive.
I've found that a lot of problems can usually be traced to 3rd party software, often software that is intended to replace functionality provided by the native rom - such as Sense replacements etc. - or ones that tinker with "deep" system settings ie CPU etc.
But everyone's experience is different & people expect different things from these machines
Peace

Cheers, I see your point too! Don't mean to come on here and just spout negativity, maybe I expect too much! I've actually got around most of the issues that were annoying me by switching to handcent for SMS, I usually prefer stock apps but I concede that handcent is superb and it doesn't have the 'delete by selection bug'.
I do love my desire s really :-D
I know, handcent gets lots of rave reviews. Me? I just don't get it, lol. Quite happy with native sms app

I have to say I am mote than happy with ny Desire S on Orange, haven't had any issues.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
If it wasn't for the delete by selection bug I would be happy enough with the native app, but that was making the phone unusable. Plus I discovered I can't save an mms picture to SD card even though I've got 1+ gigabyte free space (but only 4%). That was a bit annoying :-D
That's weird, I have less than 3% (2.6% to be precise) left on my SD card & can save attachments no bother.
What happens with the 'delete by selection' bug?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
The delete by selection bug I refer to is when you press the backspace key and the phone jumps to the delete text message by selection screen for that current conversation thread. You keep pressing backspace and it just jumps back to the same screen. It's a fairly well documented problem. With the stock keyboard it occurred maybe once every 10 SMS, with the Gingerbread keyboard I'm using it was happening nearly every txt. Seems to happen particularly when you begin composing in portrait then switch to landscape.
Apologies for the lack of paragraphs!

Hi All,
As I've previously mentioned in the first impressions thread we have a persistent issue with our ChaCha that has been present on the two devices we have had and has not been fixed by the 1.18 update.
After pressing the SYM key to bring up the symbols\smilies whatever symbol that is highlighted blue persists on the screen after selected. This can usually be cleared away by tapping around the screen or exiting the SMS\Talk app but occasionally it persists, needing a reboot to clear.
Has anyone else seen this? I initially thought it was an issue with the first device alone, but now it is happening with the second device, and after the update, surely others must be seeing this also?
No one?

in my chacha everything work normal, no issue.
My chacha takes me to the very first SMS of a contact frequently while typing a reply.
Very frustrating if you have to go all the way down among 300+ SMS in a conversation. But going to home screen and then back to the SMS is ok since the message its saved as draft either way.
This happens almost every time i want to reply to someone.
Gave up in the end. Issue kept occurring, also had a problem with the camera not starting and needing a reboot. Carphone warehouse were really good about it so swapped for a desire s.
Hope no-one else has issues as its a great phone without the bugs!

I've had the symbol box stick on screen once so far (had the phone 3 days) but it went away pretty quickly afterwards. Certainly doesn't seem to be anything I'd be too worried about.

The trouble we had was that every once in a while it wouldn't disappear, reboot would be needed.this started happening more frequently. This, along with the
Camera force closing and then not working until a reboot, made it feel like a flawed device. Shame as we loved the design, look and feel of the phone.

I believe it's a bug, no issues after changing to use Handcent SMS...

Is this issue present in all or common in Chaha phones?
So I'm guessing this SMS jumping to the top problem is isolated or rare by the lack of replies.. Right? That's a good news! Right?
It happens several times each day. Sometimes, after getting out of an app to go back to Home, it seems like Sense reloads. It shows the HTC white screen and then "Loading..." for a few seconds before the home screen shows up. It's not something that affects functionality but it sure is annoying. If someone knows how to fix this or why it is happening, please, let me know. Thanks.
this happens to me to, but it is everytime i install or update a new app

Just means that your device ran out of memory to hold sense in, and Since rosie (HTC Sense Launcher name) went out of memory (probably because the app you that you had running used up alot of memory and resources), your phone needs to reload rosie again. Happens to everyone at least once. My advice would be to not run so many apps at once, and take off some widgets/apps off the screen. Will lessen your chance of your sensation having to boot rosie from its memory. Hope i helped.
Thanks, Shaquiel, Good luck with unlocking the bootloader. I'm following your work
BTW, most of the time I'm just using the stock music app. I had already gotten rid of most widgets too.

The same thing is happening to my phone. I just did a wipe and I am still having the same problem.

sense`
I gave tmobile a call about the sense force close and they said that a 3rd party app may be causing the problem. Then I called htc and they said it is a defective phone and to request a replacement.
It may be due to heavy RAM memory usage slowing it down to a (how us ex-iPhone users say) respring to clear all the memory. Plus Sense is a beast that isn't cool towards RAM. Out of the box you see in the Task Manager you get at MOST 200mb and average 150mb.
Just wait for your phone to be S-Off and dip into the Roms. Get Gingerbread, real Gingerbread. Will defiantly lift the weight off of the RAM.

I had the same issue. I installed Launcher Pro and haven't had any issues since. It's a pretty common problem. I don't think its a defective phone.

I can't wait for S-off. I removed the Weather Clock widget and Sense seems to reboot less.
the sensation has 768MB but only 558MB in total there is something wrong
i've had occasional reloading before but every time I change a setting or open up text messages when I close out of that task it reloads Sense. At least 25 times in a row. Trying a reboot. I will have to go back to my N1 if this persists.

Delete the htc sense account and see if that fixes your problem.

I would but last time I did that I had to recreate another. I disabled all the syncs and changed from push to manual. Maybe that will have some impact- and possibly save my battery.
Any time the free RAM drops to a certain level Android will bump off Sense, as already mentioned. This isn't a bug per se, just a ramification of the device not having enough RAM (if it didn't have Sense it would have enough RAM, but Sense uses quite a bit). Happens to me whenever I use a high quality game, or if I have enough open tasks consuming RAM.
My phone reloaded sense several times a day. Every time I sideloaded an app, every time I played a game, every time I browsed the web for more than 5 mins...etc. I even tried a factory reset and the same thing kept happening. I got tired of that and my screen seemed loose so I took it back and got a brand new one a few days ago. The new one hasn't reloaded Sense once. I've sideloaded apps through Amazon, and played a few games, this one is MUCH better. I would recommed if it hasn't been 14 days since you bought it, try taking it back and getting a new one if Sense is reloading constantly. It worked for me!

If there isn't a memory leak in Sense they are guilty of horrible product design. This was happening to me after doing nothing at all without a ton of widgets or other background apps.

My replacement just arrived so I will see how it goes. What is your date/country of origin/serial prefix on your current unit?
My first unit was a Taiwan Sharp 6/2/11 HT162T
This one I havent opened is a China 6/7/11 SH167T.
son of a *****........****ing D U S T smh - of course the power button is fine. Another 14 days on this one. Getting tired of this crap.
As this is my second handset I'm having all kind of problems or "bugs"
1. When I go to delete an app the size numbers go nuts I have to back out then try again before I am able to remove an app
2. My phone gets super hot right now all I am doing is typing this post and my phone is at 112 F
3. My data when switching from 2g, 3g or 4g sticks where I have to like in the hd2 early android stages and enable airplane mode and disable airplane mode
4. I have had to hard reset my phone so much lately that I took my cover completely off has froze twice so bad the screen turned black and did not come back till after the hard reset
This an amazing device with alot of potential given that HTC unlocks the bootloader (my guess is xda will beat them to the punch . I do not want to do a handset exchange again it is a pain in the butt and it is not like I know the next one will be flawless. I'm torn but you know what I think ill wait until I'm rootedAnd see what the awesome devs cook up if I'm still having issues ill return it. What do you think?

I spoke to voda today. I am onto my second device now and the bugs just keep crawling out so they are sending me another on Tuesday.
But, to be fair I'm quiet disappointed with the sensation. And have lost all faith in htc so I ask if it was possible to change to another device. They said only if the next obe has issues, which I think it will personally. So looks like ill be joining the sgs2 group. These things seem far to unfinished to have on a 24month contract. Personal opinion.

Overheating is bad. It can cause numerous problems, like those freezes. I would try to figure out what's causing it. Try installing OSMonitor and look at the running processes CPU load. In the settings you can sort on load by descending (the default is ascending), which will put the heaviest users at the top of the list. If CPU usage is not causing the heat then the phone may be defective, and you could face ongoing problems. If the cause is some app or setup option then getting another phone won't fix it. The freezes may be an indication the phone is already damaged, with replacement the only option.
Regarding the 2G/4G switching, have you done the toggle ciphering fix? If not you can search the forums for how to do it. If so, then you may just be in a marginal signal area where it's going to flip around. I'm in one myself at home, but use wifi so it's not a problem. If it does it when you're in a strong 4G area then not sure what to say except contact support (you say 4G so I assume you're on TMO in the US).
Don't know about the uninstall quirk. Have the apps been moved to the SD? If so, try moving them back before uninstalling. If they are standard market apps then sounds like a bug that should be reported.
Edit: One other thought. You might try formatting your SD. That's solved some quirky issues for other posters. I had some flakiness on my first Sensation, HTC diagnosed it as a bad SD and sent me a new one.
Thanks for the reply helped alot

Regarding the uninstalling apps issue, I've seen something similar. When I first access an app under Settings>Applications>Manage applications I see the storage numbers rolling rapidly then stop. If I try to uninstall at that point nothing happens. If I back out one level and then go back in to the app I can uninstall it. Odd behavior but the workaround is simple.

yeah same thing to me only when i try to stop the app first the numbers go crazy but if i hit uninstall 1st it dont happen whats funny is i thought is was only me
It seems when I press the home button or just press "back" enough times to end up at home, the screen displays the HTC logo for a time then actually gets to the home screen. It's almost as if it's rebooting every time I go home, but music applications continue to play.
I am not rooted nor have I installed any custom firmware on my sensation. Is it just a lack of RAM?
seems like the sense UI is restarting. do u have installed any launcher ?
I have not installed any custom launchers.
is this not a common issue among sensation owners?
maybe I need to flash a custom rom that's more optimized...
Happened to me as well (so far, I've only seen it twice since buying the device (XE) 3 weeks ago). I'm on the stock ROM.
It seems when there are too many apps active, which require too much RAM, Android unoads Sense from memory.
You check what you have installed and running (not only in Task Manager, but also in the "Running Services" tab of the application manager.
This is very common; it's just an aspect of Sense. Some ROMs do it more than others but they all do it to some degree. I see it happen most often when you're running a lot of apps at the same time and then hit home.

HTC logo
I have started getting this recently, I assume it came with an alleged "upgrade".
The really useful people at HTC told me it was my fault for installing applications and suggested I do a factory reset.
As stated above, if you kill some apps, it seems to stop it.
I have also, with my limited ability tried to stop some stuff from loading.
If there was a guide somewhere to managing what loads, I think that would help a lot with this problem.
It's because there's not enough memory for it, forcing it to be closed and restarted. Rather common on these phones, and either you need nothing installed on the phone, or just use a different launcher that doesn't take as much memory to run. As soon as I changed launcher it runs perfectly. As soon as I change back the problem resurfaces.
android memory will auto shut any other program when the current program does not have enough memory...
Get spare parts and set the autokiller option to normal
I suggest you root and add (all the way at the bottom) line "ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1" (without the quotes) to build.prop in /system
Problem solved.

no doubt there are many users on here who are quite happy to root their phone, or prepared to install "Spare Parts".
At my level of ability, I would appreciate being given information as to how to control this behaviour. I think the solution lies in being able to prevent some applications from running automatically on start-up and in effectively, that is, permanently, shutting down applications. I find that using task killers, the applications start running themselves again.
it does seem to me that the android system has a serious defect as no consumer is going to tolerate a situation where, every time one wants to carry out a task on the phone, one has to wait approximately 30 seconds. The level of documentation supplied with the system is quite atrocious.

There's definitely a bug there and I think HTC should be aware of it!!
I don't see the point for HTC to let everyone down the "root" avenue ... or may be I'm missing something.
How could we take it further?

I hope people don't just pass this off as another annoying ics question. But with the ram issues this phone has, can we use a swap partition like in Linux and the old CM5/6 days on the G1. Sorry if this was already asked, the search function on this app doesn't allow to search individual forums.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
what ram issues do you have? I have 200 available most of the time, with about 10 apps running most of the time... I've read up on the using swap partition for the phone and it's not useful, in my opinion just unnecessary. Are you completely out running on zero ram available?
See what apps run in background. Google voice eats ram if you don't force close it often, Facebook will eat it if you enable background notifications.
Some keyboard apps also eat ram... check and take a picture for us.
no matter what rom i use it works great for a day or so then suddenly it just slows down. i do power cycle the phone at least once a day. and have tried the ram manager on the play store, and just killing things manually. the ram wouldnt hit zero at all, but it would get low for like 10-15 seconds at a time. my biggest concern is that i cant answer a phone call right away, it always lags for about 10-15 even up to 30 seconds before i slide the ring to answer. and when i look at the ram afterwords its below 100. i rolled back to GB about a week and a half ago because of this. (i bounce back and forth)
Don't have the issue myself on any ICS rom, the answer issue isn't anything new its old news most roms have fixed it. We would still need more info to help you though.
