[Q] Excessive Data Usage from Sense and Settings - HTC Sensation

I'm on the 200MB Unlimited data on TmoUS. With the same sync settings, I used to average ~ 3 MB/day using my HD2. After changing to the sensation, I am seeing more like ~ 10 MB/day.
To find out which app is draining my data, I installed Traffic Counter (Free from market) to monitor each app. It turns out that the top 4 apps that uses the most data are:
HTC Hub
Setup
Settings
Clock
It is also interesting to note that those 4 apps use identical amount of data daily. Therefore, I believe there must be some setting in Sense and/or Android that is allowing these apps to sync periodically...
Sorry for my OCD... but it bugs me to no end seeing things like Setup, Settings and the clock constantly sucking my data and wakes the phone from sleep.

Go into Account and Sync in the Settings menu and turn off HTC Sense Sync. There's also a shedload more stuff you can turn off.

Connection at specific time/frequency

I'm looking for an app which can, as happens on nokia phones or on iphone, enable internet connection with the specified and desired frequency.
I'd like to download mails and get apps synced using the internet connection which should turn ON only, for example, 1 time each hour...
Internet Connection should be kept OFF during time other than when sync is needed also to preserve unuseful battery consumption.
Any ideas?
By Android settings I can see only "keep internet connection always on".
Look for Timeriffic in the Market
Really unuseful app for my request... sorry but removed.

Did I make a so strange question??
Is there a so stupid answer or solution or it's impossible to do what I ask?
Tasker can set Auto Sync or Mobile Data entirely on/off on any kind of schedule you want. Mobile Data manipulation relies on APNDroid, which might have caveats or requirements, not sure.
Tasker can do a zillion other things too.
Honestly, however, with all of the things I have running on my Nexus One, including K9 Mail syncing two IMAP mailboxes, weather, some periodic GPS stuff going on in Tasker I have set up, I still see 2-2.5%/hr battery usage. I charge nightly, so this is plenty of battery life for me.

[Q] Enable always-on mobile data

I've checked the forums but still theres no answer on what exactly is and what exactly it does, its pros and cons of the 'Enable always-on mobile data'
I would like to know what exactly is that option what sort of apps get affected cause right now gmail still working for me with that setting off. The thing is some people claim better battery life some people claim the opposite.
Anyone knows official use for it?? anyone? I started to test the battery life on it to see if it helps in the event it doesnt I would say the mytouch 4g is the worst phone ever.... i hardly get 10 hours of battery life with the phone just sitting on the desk...

'Always-On' Data tells your phone to open a data connection whenever one is available in your area, not just whenever you need it ('On-Demand' Data). If always-on is activated, your apps can connect and sync data in the background, unbeknownst to you. I got caught with it on my first phone bill, and it ended up costing me a good few hundred dollars. There are a few things you can do to help:
Settings > Accounts and Sync is your best friend. You can choose what accounts sync what data, and how often. The less you sync, the less data is used and the less time your radio spends transmitting (hopefully boosting your battery life a bit). You can also disable background syncing completely here, but that means you will have to manually sync your GMail, Facebook, Twitter etc.
As far as your battery life is concerned, under Settings > Location there are two options to 'Use wireless connections' and 'Use GPS satellites'. Having both of these ticked will use much more battery. Definitely untick 'use GPS satellites' and if you don't use any location-based widgets (like HTC weather) or services (Footprints etc), turn the other one off too. That should give you a bit more than ten hours
Let me know how you get on! Good luck!

I got kinda confused here. Your saying that settings -> Wireless & Networks ->Mobile Networks -> Uncheck Enable always-on mobile data
By turning it off you get less data consumption per month?
More battery life?
Any dissadvantage?
By your post I assume that if its uncheked then apps wont sync? right now i still receive my gmail and stuff.
100% correct. Turn it off and you'll have to sync your apps manually, but less data and more battery
If you're using email set up with push, this option has to remain on. Otherwise, after a certain amount of time (5 min on most htc's), the data connection is severed and your push will no longer work.
And yes, there is greater battery drain with it on, and higher data usage.

battery draining bug?

Just got my TB - loving everything about it except the battery. My iphone 3g had an exceptional battery.
During the recent 4g outage - I checked out the settings at *#*#4636#*#* to get the 4g radio to switch to cdma auto.
While there I noticed that both my 4g and 1x speed icons on the notification bar would light up the send arrow every three seconds (barring any other kind of network activity) when idle. I noticed on the phone info area it lists PPP sent and PPP received. Every three seconds my sent data numbers increased by 241 bytes.
EVERY. THREE. SECONDS! Thats 20 times a minute, 1200 times an hour. Every hour, my phone sends 289,200 bytes somewhere. During the course of a 24 hour day (if my battery can last that long) - that's 6.6 megabytes a day or 200 megs a months just sitting idle.
While not a lot of data - I'm sure 28,800 transmissions from the cell radio a day can have a drain on the battery.
Is there a way of seeing which app is transmitting data and where? I read a similar bug was found on Win Phone 7 devices.
If this has been discussed before I'm sorry. Searching for "241 bytes" showed no hits.
Also on a side note - just noticed on my TB that when a calendar reminder appears on my lock screen, when you slide down to dismiss the event, you go right into the phone even though there is a security lock (lock pattern for me) enabled. So you can gain access to any TB by simply waiting for a calendar event. Not cool!
Network keep-alive?
is your sync turned on?
that would be great if it was a bug and we could figure it out.
well I sync using the minimum settings - disabled stocks and twitter sync. Most others are set to the lowest sync settings.
Even if this is just a keep alive ping - 1/4 gig a month can cut into data limits if you don't have an unlimited plan. And this is when the phone is sitting idle.
I Noticed My Phone Randomly Submitted 3g Data (No 4g Here) when rooted on custom rom and when I was Stock. Idk Why. I have Only Mobile Network Checked. No Auto Sync. No Background Data on. Idk Why I randomly see that Arrow go up. Maybe its an app I have..hmm..
Went To Battery Stats and checked Network Usage in Battery History. Then Check all Time. Shows Internet as the Most, Then 0 (Idk what this is) Then Media (What Media?) then Dialer, Then Android System then Market, then all Others (Rest dont matter because usage is so low.)
I'm having this issue also, except more data is being used each time than what you posted in OP. I had background data turned off and it still happens. Would like to see this worked out.

[Q] Are Google services be causing higher battery drain

I've been playing with random ROMs recently and have noticed my 'roids acting up.
Upon install of a new kernel/ROM, I bypass the Android/Google services setup pages that show up on initial boot. That gives me the baseline battery drain. It's only when I start to use Google services (like the Market) that it requires me to activate via a Google acct. After the activation, I see the increased battery drain.
Specifically, my battery discharge increases ~2.7x (idle) after I provide my Google account information to access the Market. After I provide the account creds, the GMail app starts working and I receive notifications of new emails.
I've got a theory that the GMail app or another Google app is polling/pulling instead of using the GMail/Google service to push the data and that this is using additional CPU.
Is this theory correct? Has anyone else seen this behavior?
P.S. My service provider, Verizon, uses a NAT (IP 10.xxx). I can't see how any external service can push anything through a NAT unless it has special access through the NAT. Can Google?
P.S.S. I know I can disable background data and auto-sync via Settings--> Accounts & Sync. It seems to fix the problem but I can't pin it down specifically to an app/service.
- Samsung Droid Charge
- Verizon Wireless 4G
- kernel 2.6.32.9 imnuts at virtualbox 1
- Humble 1.51 EE4 Android Froyo (currently)
Any help?
Anyone? I've received no responses and this seems like a question that could affect a large number of Android users.
Hi!
2 things I've done recently seem to have "removed" Google services from my battery usage when idle.
1.Using Titanium Backup/Menu/Market Tools/Market Auto Updates/Deselect all and Save auto Updates configuration.
2.Go Maps/More/Location History and then press the back button and go Menu/Settings /Location reporting/Location Reporting-Do not update your location+disable Location history+sign out of Latitude. The first 2 I've always done but signing out of Latitude seemed to make the difference.(Disable both Check ins).
There are obviously the other usual battery saving settings but these 2 got rid of Google Services.

If you have no other regular apps working the background, google services as gmail or gtalk or contacts sync or calendar will surely increase battery usage, but it should be in the dimension of 2.7 times.
Battery life
Battery now down to 26% from full with 2d 1h 48m on battery.Google services has gone from 80%+ to 2%.Couple of screenshots attached. This Google services thing is not the only answer to battery life problems but there's always something running in the background doing the damage.HTH.
I've noticed that when I've got my EVO active on WiFi there's some significant network traffic between it and Google even when the device seems idle. I also have a cell phone repeater in my basement that shows activity when I so much as hit the power button to unlock the phone. Feels like there's stuff going on with some of those apps that maybe excessive and, yeah, that could impact battery drain. It certainly can't be good for it.
it is indeed.
Launcher?
Changed from TW Launcher to Go at about the same time as fiddling with Google Services above.Could it be that this has also made a difference. It has been a big improvement whatever it is.

[Q] Disabling Android OS background data completely

Hello everyone,
Let me explain you my situation: I'm on Nexus 6P on the latest Marshmallow. My provider currently has a a new offer: I can use Facebook, Viber and Whatsapp for free without limits (any other app usage will cost me money). So naturally I downloaded AFWall+ and blocked all apps besides Facebook, Messenger and Viber and I also turned on "Restrict Background Data". Now the problem is that after doing this, Android OS is still using some of my data (which enables a standard data plan for 1 day, which costs me money). I tried disabling sync, data backup, but something is still using background data under Android OS (I attached a picture from data collection, I wiped all the previous data usage, so it is showing data usage from like 5 minutes).
So is there a way of how to completely disable background data while on cellular network (not wifi)?
If needed I can provide extra information, thanks in advance
through settings change
In setting app you can choose accounts &s ync , there disable background data is shown .just tick it and done.
