Super Easy Way to Root Sprint .6 Release (might work for other carriers also)
Download the app from this post (or the one attached here) to your phone and install with Astro or the like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
Run app, select appropriate version, hit root. Wait ~30 sec, see root confirmation. You are now rooted!!!!
Need a super easy way to get recovery image installed? Download ROM Manager (free) and install the ClockworkMod Recovery. You can now install roms with either ROM manager or thru recovery. You can even flash alternate recovery (RA 1.6.2) from rom manager.
This is stupid easy!!!!
I just did these exact steps about 10 min ago and it worked flawlessly. No messing with RUUs.
Not sure if boot-patched.zip should be flashed afterwards like in the original 2.1 root. Someone else please chime in on this.
NEW VERSION ADDED
confirmed this works.
question...
I've rooted my Evo , but now tryin to help a buddy root his hero. New to this. I'm curious about some specifics of this. At what point can you nand backup and wipe? As I've noticed most peoples problems rooting come from not wiping data, dalvik cache, and factory reset.
Also, you need to do the 2.1 update before doin this, does it matter? My buddys hero is still on 1.5. Any extra info, specifics, technical info much appreciated.
Thanks in advance. Looks great, and thank you.

Yes you would have to update to 2.1 for this to work, but since your 1.5 why not just root from there?

The app has a 1.5 setting (I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS), but I would recommend doing the 2.1 update first as you will get a newer radio etc....
The point where you do the nandroid backup and wipe is after you install a recovery image. Once you have recovery image installed, you boot into recovery (all stuff you can do from rom manager) and then you do it from there.

Hmmm. Ok. I just started lookin into this for him last night. This appears to be the easiest root method I've ever seen. Is there a root method or exploit for 1.5 that's as easy as this? Hard to imagine so. I've seen a 9 step root from 1.5 so far , but if this works from 2.1, it seems it'd be easier to update to 2.1, then do this.
This provides full root, recovery, and nand unlock, though, huh?
IDK if there's some other method that you know of that's easy, AND reliable, it'd be much appreciated. Don't wanna jack up my buddys phone. I'd never live it down.
Thanks though.
And @ swapped, thanks, I missed your reply before I posted this.
Oh, and is the superuser app included in this ? For my Evo, I had to put a SU zip on SD and flash it. Same for hero?
The app installs superuser

I just used this on my wifes phone and I had some issues downloading the apk file initially but after that, this was the EASIEST way to ROOT hands down...almost too easy to believe to be honest. WOW....thank you all who contirbuted to this....

(Fresh Hero 2.3.3.
on and I'm having trouble with not being able to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery in ROM Manager

Any thoughts?

Had the same issue this morning. After a reboot cleared ROM Manager's download cache and it did the backup just fine.
Hope it helps.

Universal androot 1.61
Seems not to work on HTC Sprint Hero 2.1 with latest .6 update
anyone else confirm?
It worked for me i did it two days ago i had a non rooted cdma hero with the .6 i am running cm6 I didn't need to downgrade at all
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
In case people didn't know the Universal 1-Click root works for the CDMA Hero even if it's running the latest RUU. I managed to root and install a custom recovery and custom overclocked kernel in about 15 minutes after flashing the RUU strictly "over the air" using no terminal commands.
Step 1: Download UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk from here
Step 2: Download a filemanager from market. Explorer works fine.
Step 3: Open the filemanager on your phone and navigate to where you downloaded UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk
Step 4: Install UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk through the filemanager (if you get errors about Unknown sources then go into settings > applications and make sure Unknown sources is checked)
Step 5: Open Universal Androot and click root
This will root your phone and install the latest Superuser.apk
Step 6: Download RomManager from the Market. Allow it su permissions and either install ClockworkMod Recovery or Amon_RA recovery.
Step 7: Download whatever Roms you want and flash away
If this has been discussed somewhere else I'll take it down. Hope this helps people with brand new Hero looking for a quick root with no terminal commands required.
Nice this should be a sticky.
Right on that's awesome! I agree definitely needs too be a sticky
ok how did u confirm it was rooted it said it was rooted but no root apps would work
and no superuser installed
I tried searching and did not really find any answers that worked so I am asking for assistance.
I recently used Odin to move to 2.2 (/showthread.php?t=797282) and that went well. The only issue now is that I am trying to root, and cannot get that to work. I would like to use Cognition with all the nice tweaks.
I have tried to use the one click root /showthread.php?t=761751) which is what I used when I first got my captivate. Each time that I run this it gives me a error about a esignature failure and so it will not allow the fix to happen.
I then tried to use Odin 2.1 stock recovery (/showthread.php?t=731989) but I cannot get it to boot into the same recovery that I used to get it to 2.2. I hold the volume keys (up and down like before) and no pure recovery. I hold the volume+power and I get the option to reinstall as when I am rooting, and get the same errors.
I have tried to follow the directions here:/showthread.php?t=734163 to go back to stock, but I am sure that I am missing something.
I have tried removing the update.zip from the internal card (using Root Explorer) file from the device, rebooting, and then running the root attempt again.
I have Clockwork Rom Premium but cannot use it as it will not work without root.
I am at a loss, and would really appreciate the communities support. I am sorry if I missed something one searching, and feel free to point me to a thread I missed. I really just want to get the phone back to 2.1 and I can root and then put Cognition on it, or just 2.1 and I can root it and wait for ATT for the OTA to 2.2.
Thank you in advance for assistance.
ps.. sorry for the /showthread= links. System would not let me post full urls.
RESOLVED!
UPDATE:::
I was able to get the 2.1 stock Odin to work and now I am on 2.1 with Root again.
Just so you know, at the moment clockwork recovery doesnt work wit 2.2. If you wanted to get to clockwork while using a 2.2 rom you have to make sure the clockwork update.zip is on your sdcard then use odin to flash a 2.1 kernel. Kind of a pain but it works.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Just so you know the issue with using the update.zip or clockworkmod is the phone, when in 2.2, requires a signed update.zip; the old update.zip and the one that clockworkmod uses is not signed for 2.2; so you cannot root or modify with any of the update.zip methods. There is a longer process to root a 2.2, but if you are going to cog 2.2, you don't need to worry about it.
so when i originally got the charge from my father in law he already had it rooted so i did not have to deal with researching it then.. but .... while i am a flashaholic.. i flashed a few roms and somehow got it to boot into the android stock recovery the one with the blue highlights and had a code below or above it now sure... my Question is as follows: what could have caused this to happen in the first place i have always been on the voodoo cmw with lagfix i flashed a rom and all of the sudden it went to a orange cwm flashed a new rom rebooted and got the android stock recovery what could have caused this??? i heard it was something to do with /data but not sure exactly what the means...
next what is the easiest way to root this thing i have my replacement coming today and thinking about rooting but i am not sure cause i don't want to have to go through this crap again.... is it dummy proof can something go wrong is the real question thanks guys sorry for the long a... post ....
The stock kernel overwrites the recovery to stock. when you flash cwm on a stock ROM, the first boot must be into recovery so you can flash a new kernel.

Due to being a relative newb to Android, I have no idea what caused your problem.
But, to reroot just follow the step by step tutorial for flashing a ROM that is stickied in the forum ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580 ), it's even got pictures, you can't go wrong.(maybe if you don't follow the instructions you could, also choose a ROM that is rooted, I've been on Humble 4.5 and Gummy 2.1, both are rooted)
bfitzpatrickd2d,
Anything and everything can go wrong at anytime with any electronic device you are moding or rooting. By rooting you are changing the operating system of a computer. It is just the same as using a custom version of say windows or mac on your computer... there are always risks, things you may have to tweak that others did not, and little steps that you can not miss.
That being said... feel free to check out my series of videos on how to root, backup and ROM the Charge. My root video is old, but still works just fine.
Let me know if you need help.

thanks man probably root tomorrow but I noticed in one of the threads on how to root does not mention anything about flashing a kernal with the stock rom in the instructions???
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
There are several different version of the stock Rom. I think you would have to be rooted and you could be on the stock Rom and just flash in cww. Select zip of the kernel you want and good to go.
Hi,
Installed the now defunct Whisper Systems 'Whispercore' Android a while back but want to install the new ICS on my I9020 phone.
Have unlocked the boot loader and gained root using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545"
which seemed to work great, and then downloaded the ICS update in the sticky thread on this forum and followed the instructions but only get some message about 'assert' and 'google keys' and how the update failed. I'll only copy it all out if you think it'll help
So do I need to go back to 'vanilla' 2.3.5. and if so as anyone got a link and guide?
thanks
I have the same issue
I too want to get the new vanilla ICS on a rooted phone. I understand that I need to go back to Gingerbread stock rom and work my way up from there. Is there a guide or a procedure that I need to follow? Any help would be appreciated.
Hi,
I have got this LG optimus G2X from Wind, unlocked, and rooted. The thing is that I am still using 2.2, and for the longest time I have been waiting for an update, yet nothing seems to appear. I was looking around and I found this guide:
http://www.lg-phones.org/how-to-flas...ngerbread.html
To my knowledge it seems pretty legit, but the links are old, and I can no longer get the files I need to perform the upgrade. Do you guys advice me to perform such an upgrade, or should I go for custom ROMs (not a big fan)?
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to the forum!
You have to do some reading to avoid bricking your wind G2X. To update from stock froyo(2.2) you can proceed two directions:
1. Install custom recovery to be safe and then backup your current Froyo ROM, then finally choose your preferred ROM from development section. This procedure will not update your baseband (you probably have the June wind baseband).
Clockwork recovery flash guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2: Updating from stock Froyo to official gingerbread using lg update tool. This procedure will update your baseband to the latest July one, however you will get all t-mobile bloatwares with that stock gingerbread ROM.
Proceed to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332350
Option 2 requires stock recovery/ROM. You have those at the moment (i assume), so if you haven't rooted your device yet then give it a shot to have the July baseband.
With both option i would prefer to flash clockwork recovery first, make a backup then if you go with option2 flash back the stock recovery(how toguide is in option 1's link).
You might also wanna use some application/settings/call logs/contacts backup tool which requires root, like titanium backup/my backup. For those to work root your device using one click root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Make your preferred backup with any of those above mentioned applications, then if you go with option 2, then use super one click to unroot your phone before proceed.
Please take the time to read the instructions, since a couple of folks had issues updating wind handsets to the July baseband.
Good luck!
