Tip: Backup ALL DATA

This is just a friendly tip that you should follow even if you don't plan of rooting or flashing any ROMs. I have personally tried several different Roms and after rooting the phone, I can say it's a major pain to have to rebuild. Every time you modify your device backup the Data and possibly your apps if you don't feel like re-downloading them. Hopefully this helps people who are new to the area of rooting and ROMs like I was a short while ago.

Titanium backup and nandroid are your friend.

My Backup Pro also gets the job done.

I was wondering about this. So titanium/my backup pro will back up app data on a non-rooted phone, so it can be restored post-rooting?
Even though the app is installed on the SD, the user data is still actually stored on the phone regardless, I take it.
I just want to keep my angry birds progress that exists now on my currently non-rooted phone, and get it back after root.
Any clarification on this would be appreciated.

I am pretty sure that titanium backup cannot back up app data unless the phone is already rooted - not sure about MyBackupPro.

It's a good question and I'm not sure only because I was rooted before I backed up when I rooted I forgot to backup and started again.

Indeed titanium does require root for its primary functionality, but I'm not sure if that extends to simply reading user data, and then copying it to an additional location (ie backing up).
As far as freezing/uninstalling software or *reinstalling* previously backed-up user data, root certainly is required.
I don't see how it wouldn't be feasible to at least read user data of an app, unless the Android system, by design, limits the access of an apps user data to the app itself.
I just did a my backup pro backup, but I can't really tell if it actually got the user data for sure, (though it indicated that's what it was doing).
Hope I can get this issue squared away, as I'm itching to get this thing rooted.

When I open backup pro it asks if I want to enable backup of root files. I think it just allows extra files to be backed up if you're rooted.

I'm gonna have to do a little more in-depth research later-on when I get to my computer, and see how these apps handle backing-up user/app data on an unrooted phone.
I was never in this situation on my previous phone, a captivate, because it was my first Android, and I rooted early-on...it was a lot more straightforward.

They have a non-rooted version, unless that's changed, but I'm not sure if it still has the same functionality/ability that the rooted version does.

Your not going to be able to backup any user-specific data associated with any given app unless your rooted, or the app itself has a mechanism for backing up/exporting your custom data. There may be some way of doing something via adb, but I'm not sure, and it would seem that biting the bullet and rooting, and then being able to backup thoroughly from that point forward, would be less hassle in the long run.
The apps themselves, or at least a list of them is backed-up to Google if you have that option set. So if you get a new phone or reset, the first time you setup the phone, Google retrieves those apps automatically.
I do believe that mybackup pro, and perhaps even titanium, will backup the apps themselves (the .apks) ONLY, even if you aren't rooted, but that really isnt very useful, especially if you have the Google backup mechanism enabled.
These apps need root in order to gain access to the location on the phone where apps store any of the data you have created with those apps.

Id like to play around with new roms but its a pain that we always have to clear data after install, why is this? Its a pain to always have to set My phone back up.

I think you can get titanium back up and it save everything data and apps then you can reinstall everything. It has to be the paid app the free only supports one app. I could be wrong but someone else can confirm what im saying.

It only applies if there are framework mods or if the base firmware version is different. System app data is usually incompatible and in some cases user app data will cause issues.

TiBu supports all apps backup, both paid and free.
Paid one does additional tasks like batch restore without prompting for each app and data.

Well your JUST TRYING out a Rom, why even set your phone all the way back up......just load up the essentials and go at it, how fast is the email, how good is the network, browser speed, sound, bugs or whatever....then move on to the next Rom.
i guess some would see that as a lot of work, but if your not willing to do it.....then you will never really see what good and bad with the Rom.
Make Nandroids and Flash away. at the current moment i can swap between, Miui, Cm7, Infused 2.2.3, and even Hellraiser combos in a matter of minutes WITH ALL MY APPS AND DATA by just grabing my nandroid and flashing ( Of course you will want to know that you cant just go flashing any nandroin on top of another nandroids all willy nilly....so make your sure your current Kernel matches up with the nandroid you plan on restoring.

Backup without root?

Hey guys about ready to finally break down and unlock this thing, but I've been using it since august and I would really like to save some app data, any suggestions?

there is a free market app called My Backup that has a non-root version, it will backup your data and apps separately. it works pretty well, and will backup your app data. it can sometimes be flakey restoring all your apps, but it mainly works. i've found it flawless for data such as sms/mms, bookmarks, call log, etc
edit: just make sure to save your backup in a safe place, like a physical sdcard if you have one in your device, or your computer, since the unlock wipes your device. if i remember correctly, the app will store your backup in a folder called rerware/MyBackup..... something like that

If your not rooted it doesn't do app data. For not being rooted it does have a lot of nice options for sms, mms and such that a lot of apps mess up so its still a nice find.

Can data backups be easily merged?

I backed up my wife's Samsung Galaxy Nexus using My Backup, to save her phone and am messaging data and stored it off device. I had planned to root, ROM and restore. (I only got around to rooting, and, in the mean time, she made a lot of new calls, sent and received a lot of texts, and doesn't want me to overwrite her current phone and sms logs.
I bought her a new LG G2, and really want to get her transferred. But she won't move without up to date phone and sms logs.
Is there an easy way to merge the stored backup with her current data, without overwriting, so that current calls and texts just fall into their proper place in history?
