i want to delete bloatware myself. is there a list anywhere of apps that are safe to delete?
also, is it better to delete or Freeze the app? if i delete them what is the best way? where are they located?
thanks gang
They are located in system/app. List what apps you would like to remove, and we can let you know if its safe.
Here is a nice list of all the .apks and a how to.

Instead of deleting apps (with the exception, perhaps, of obvious crap such as Golf, etc.) or freezing, I use Root Explorer to rename the unwanted files to xxxxxxx.apk1. This way, it's still on the phone just in case but doesn't load.
Titanium can be flaky sometimes, in my experience.

So I have my phone rooted, but I don't feel like using a different ROM. I only want to get rid of all the bloatware. I downloaded super manager from the market, and I was able to find many of the apps I wanted to delete in the "system folder"
My problem is that I cannot find the following apps in that folder.
T-Mobile Mall
Highlight
App Pack
The folder i found that had the rest of the apps was under the heading system/apps. Those three, however, are no where to be found. I tried using the search feature but that does not bring up anything. I am looking for the .apk files so that I can remove that stuff from the phone. Any ideas?????

root and install root explorer. go to /system/app and delete what you don't want and than reboot. all done. i deleted all my t-mobile crap there. have fun and be careful. make a backup just in case you make a mistake. i found all my t-mobile preinstalled apps there. some dont go by the name in the app drawer just look for the icon and go from there.
App Pack is in the system/app/ folder.Highlight & T-Mobile Mall are part of App Pack,so once that is deleted you will see all three icons disappear, use Root Explorer.

I would root and then use bloat freezer from the market. It just freezes your apps so they don't appear and can't run. You can unfreeze them at any time. It's on sale for 99 cents.
same issue
So I'm coming across the same issue. I rooted the device, downloaded root explorer and bloat freeze. After using root explorer to delete other items, I still cantfind the above apps to delete. Highlight, and tmobile mall are still present, but dont show in root explorer.
Any suggestions on where to go now.
Bloat freeze can't find them as well.
Titanium back up.
Does anyone have a list of KF apps that came with the device but you cannot easily remove unless rooted - the original link to Facebook for example? I removed some and can't remember what they were. Think I might have created problems for myself so looking to reinstall them and see if it helps.
Currently rooted. After reading all threads, can't get calendars to sync, programs that place picture frames on home screens not working.
Sounds like a wipe to factory defaults would be in order to get you back to square one. Then, start again. My advice would be that rather than removing these apps, rename .apk to .bak in the same directory, or make a folder on /sdcard and move them there. At least you'll know what you removed/renamed.

Thanks, may have to do that, important lesson learned. I think to get the list I may just break into my daughters Christmas present, fire it up and look for myself!
I'm trying to remove some of the bloatware from my rooted OTA GB 2.3.6. I'm using Root Explorer and deleting select apk's and their odex file from the system/app directory. However there is one app called Rhapsody that I haven't got all the pieces, because the Rhapsody process keeps showing up in my running services list after I reboot. Both the apk and the odex file have been deleted. Anyone know what other file(s) I missed that are connected with Rhapsody?
Also, there is this rather annoying "media scanner" that runs every time that I boot my phone. Is this a must have, or can I delete it? It adds to my boot time, and if it doesn't have to be there, I want to get rid of it. And if I can delete it, what is the name of the app?

in root explorer you must delete the apk from /system/app and the associated data folder in /data/data then do a search of the whole system for 'rhapsody' as there might be little fragments left in dbdata or dalvikcache folders just delete anything with rhapsody in the name... as for the media scanning, there is a work around for this which I believe is putting a file named '.nomedia' in whatever folder you want excluded from the scan (music or pictures for instance), if you want no scanning at all put on root of SD card and that should stop it however this means you will have manually search/scan for anything you're looking for because that file will tell all apps trying to access what you're blocking that there's nothing there
blazing through on my Acer A500 via XDA app
The Media Scanner feeds Gallery and possibly the default music player. I don't think it is something you can get rid of, but I could be wrong.
There is an app called Super Manager that makes it very easy to mark folders as "noscan". I use it so all of my ebooks don't show up in the gallery.
I didn't know about the additional related app files being in the data/data. What might be the repercussions if I miss cleaning up all of them? Do they just take up memory space, or are they being executed by the system, even if the apk and odex files are gone?
As for the media scanner...I take it this is a critical system function? Is it an indexer? If the ONLY way around it is the ".nomedia" trick...and there are obvious disadvantages to using this method, then perhaps it is just best to put up with the extra boot time.
UPDATE: Just ran "Rescan Media Root" from the Market. It stops the media scan from occurring. And you can re-enable it at any time by running this app.
I also got Rhapsody stopped by searching and deleting the rest of the associated files. Thanks for the help guys!
I'm a little late here, but Rescan Media works fine to stop the scanner, and Titanium Backup has a "Chuck Norris" mode of killing bloatware.

I was flicking through Root Browser on my SD Card today and I noticed some things that I have no idea what they are. In the past, I deleted them and it messed with my gallery or with other kinds of stuff.
The specific names of the folders are as follows:
burstlyImageCache
LazyList
LOST.DIR
Mikulu
myrecord
.wiyun
.udstate
.config_c38
What are these? what happens if I delete them? I'm not overly concerned, I'm just curious.

generally if you do not know what something is, don't delete it. I think the image cache thing has to do with the camera, and anything with a dot in front of it is a system file, so leave those alone.
Delete it if its unuseful!

I don't agree!!!
Apps often let unused files in various folders, saturating the memory of the SD Card.
If u don't know what its for, ask (or ask google )
For exemple, wiyun is a chinese game editor. Hence .wiyun is its trash directory. If you don't have any games left from this editor, you can safely delete the folder.
Mikulu folder is probably from Mikulu music player ...
etc.
Directories myrecord & myalbum
Directories myrecord & myalbum are created by the
"Easy Downloader" app and by the "Pro" variant also.
Creating empty files with equal names prevents directory
creation. But uninstalling is the only way to avoid this completely.
Best regards
P.S. I assume that other "Easy ..." apps by the 2Easy Team
developer will create them because of the in app promotion
content.
After rooting, I installed titBu to get rid of a few unwanted apps.
But titBu and other root uninstallers failed to uninstall lookout, metrozone, etc...
Simple fix:
#1) download a root file browser (i still support jrummy apps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree )
#2) navigate to /oem/priv-app and delete the "metro lookout, metrozone, Facebook installer" folders (and whatever other apps you don't want here)
Under system/priv-app you can find the Gboard libs you don't need as well.
I dont know if anybody else had problems getting rid of these, but if you do, this will get em outta here
Is there a list somewhere of what all is installed, its purpose, and maybe whether other things are dependent on it? So I know what I can safely remove?
