I'm currently out at a client site, but it's super bad reception here in the conference room they stuck us in. First of all, no 4G in colorado springs, so i disabled LTE, and hit CDMA in the network settings.
3G is near impossible inside, so i usually get 1X, and voice connection is next to impossible also.
So i noticed that from unplugging in the morning at 7:30am. at around 2pm, my battery was already down to 10%!
And i didn't even use it.
I did see from my battery usage, that Android system was ABOVE screen in power usage.
Anyone have the same issue?
I've had the same problem with EVERY phone ever, even non-smartphones have this problem. The lower the signal, the more the phone will scan for a good signal. If it has no service, it scans very frequently. If you're on a smartphone, it's even worse because then when the phone does get service, all the data apps attempt to use what little bandwidth you do have all at once. If you're in an area with poor coverage, put your phone into download mode or disable the data connection. Nothing short of putting a network extender or new tower will solve this.
Yes, but this is typical of most phones really. Searching for a signal, acquiring it, losing it, etc, uses a lot of battery. You just have to disable data. If there is wifi available, then use that, if not, just have to wait until you go outside. I have no reception in my building at work, if I leave data on, my battery is dead in a couple hours, on wifi I can go all day
Yes and my phone got very hot in my pocket at the time as well.

I have this issue at work. I get anwhere from 10-15% battery drain an hour. I have determined that it is NOT because of the data signal though becuase I can turn that off and still get about the same excessive drain. It appears to be because of the voice signal. It varies anywhere from -85dm to -115dbm and is constantly changing. When I get outside of work environment, everthing is fine again and battery usage returns to normal. My Droid X did not have this issue.

I have the same issue in my office. I just barely get voice/text service. My solution is to turn off mobile data and plug my phone in to balance out the battery drain from the weak signal. I know it is bad to have my phone plugged in all of the time but it is better to be able to have sms and not have a dead phone when I am done at work.

Yeah. Tell me about it. I am using Mobile Signal Widget to measure this. When It gets that bad, a little android face appears in the widget and it is crying.
YES! easily drains 10-15% an hour at a local pub that has 1 bar of signal.
It makes perfect sense... Your phone is fighting hard for that signal.

I drive 50+ miles to get to work and I always notice it drains a lot during my commute even when not used. I figured it was because of all the cell site swaps and searches bc I'm sure there's some spotty areas.

Same experience. Dropped to 5% in 9 hours yesterday when I forgot to turn off data while at work. Today, I'm still at 75% after 9 hours with data off.
Juice defender solved this on my fascinate. It turned data on only once every 30 minutes. But, I can't get it to turn my data back on with this phone.
I really wish data signal aggressiveness was managed better by the operating system. It could be a real boon to the average battery life. Perhaps a smart developer could come up with some sort of "conservative" governor for 3g/4g connections. Rather than increasing power draw, it could just "sleep" until a stronger signal is detected... Imnuts? Is this even possible or just a pipedream?

I can't reach my dad on his cell phone while at the pentagon for obvious reasons. He has to turn his phone off during the day or it'll die in a few short hours, as a previous poster mentioned searching for a signal is a huge battery drain.
Strange. I did not have this problem with my OG Doid or Droid X in the same environment. Maybe the Moto phones simply have a better radio than the Charge.
Yeah for some reason, the samsung radio are junk. I have my Droid Charge (personal) and an Lg phone (business) and the lg blows the sammy out of the water. Now i am in 3g fringe (forget about 4g), and the sammy loses data all together while my lg still has the signal. I hate when i am trying to search for something on the charge and it says connection failed or network unavailable retry. Even when i call verizon, they all have me do a reset and stuff, and nothing works. The best answer i get is that iam in a 3g fringe area. When i tell them that my lg works and still has signal, all i get is silence or hmmmmmm. Gota love it. Yes they exchanged the phone with a new one and it still does the same thing. Forget about battery life. I actually carry 3 batteries with me and on a good day i only use 2 but usually it is 3. Before anyone says use wifi, unfortunatly we do not have free wifi where i work. anyway that should not be the answer to this problem. We are paying for a service that i can barely use.

I went through the whole VZW customer service thing both on the phone and in person. They weren't much help but they gave me a brand new phone and it does the same thing. Then there were a lot of suggstions on different forums suggesting apps killers, turning data off, turing on 3g only data, rooting, trying different ROMs, battery clalibration, etc. None of this helps. The kind of drain I am seeing goes way beyond any benefits I would see out of any of these things. For example, I am at work now. When I left the house, it takes about 15 minutes for me to get to work. The rest of the time I have been inside my work building. I have been on battery for 2 hours & 24 minutes and I am at 76% already. Thats >10% drain per hour. When I am outside the building it is more like 3-5%. VZW customer service never suggested this as a problem. They DID suggest that 4g uses more battery but that is not the problem. I have proved that time and again by simply turning data off.
Hmm..sounds like a bad phone..I am in a fringe area at work and it definitely kills by battery faster but..it's only like 8% and hour so I still get 10 hrs a day or so...in a bad area. In a good 4 G area..I will get 24 hrs or so out of the phone.

Wow, that is the complete opposite of my experience. I've never had good signal with any LG phone - from flip phones to smartphones. Samsungs in my experience are middle of the road - not great, but not bad either. Motorolas usually do well, but there are certainly exceptions. HTC seems to be fairly good, but again, there are exceptions. Oh, and I did have one Audiovox phone on VZW, and it was garbage.

I'm on the EagleBlood Rom and currently in Singapore. Becsause I'm not using T-Mobiles expensive service and WLAN is here everywhere I have used the phone with WLAN + GPS only (Airplane mode + manual turned on WLAN + GPS). I used Locus Pro extensivly to navigate through the city and record my track. Battery after first day 8:00AM til 9:00PM was 79%. Second day is 55%.
Therefore the Cell Standby is really the issue here I would asume. But hack what do I have a cell phone for if I can't turn on the radio???
Battery really sucks otherwise. When I go to work at 07:30am and come home at 4:30PM I can put the phone on the charger, even though I barly used it.
I'm in the states, this phone lasts from about 7:30 AM until 8:00 PM with no problem, regular use, 4G all day. I disabled the Wifi which helped a lot.
Wifi uses less battery due to not having to poll the network to renew the connection. Wifi calling uses even less battery because now you have no connection to the network and it can keep a static connection to the wifi network. No need to renew that connection so it just sits there and does nothing.
I've tested and confirmed this on more than one phone.
And of course the radio is using battery. It's second only to the display in battery use. Like you said, what good is a cell phone without having the radio enabled?

This all true. Display and 3G/4G radio are the killers.
Unless you have wifi on and aren't connected to a network. Then your phone is polling for wifi connections in addition to 4G

i use wifi/wifi-calling over 95% of the time and my battery rocks! The moment I turn it off... bam.... I get crappy life on a batter. the difference is from around 35hr and drops to around 20. Then if i had moderate to heavy use on it, I'm sure I'd be getting the 8hrs everyone is complaining about.

I'm going to Hong Kong this Sunday, then will be in Singapore by the end of next Wednesday. I'm thinking to buy a local sim and use 2g only with manual WLAN, GPS off.
Agreed. I'm running CM7 #9. Took the phone off the charger at 8am. Checked my push exchange, twitter, and facebook updates. Went into work where we have no service. I have WiFi turned on for data.
I still have the cellular radio on, btw. At 3pm I have 88%.
CM7 has a WiFi bug which the WiFi won't stay on (goes to sleep with the screen off). But still pretty good.

If you saying only 4G I cannot share the expirience with you. I even turned of data completly, while I was still in the US and still got bad battery life with ONLY the radio turned on (WLAN + Data + GPS turned off)

Hong Kong Airport has free WLAN. Singapore has free wirless LAN called [email protected] through the whole downtown area. But there is a catch you have to have a Singapore Mobile number to register. They will send you the UserID and Password via text message. Lucky me I have a friend here sharing his user ID with me ... Therefore no need for the Radio to be turned on at all. And like I said the battery now last forever...

Ok let me see if i understand (not trying to be a **** here), if all of the phone functions are turned off, what were you doing?, playing games?, watching videos?, i don't know, because to me it sounds like you phone was idle.
One more example that 4g kills battery is the thunderbolt, if you think that the G2x kills battery you should use that phone and comeback to the G2x, even HTC is selling bigger batteries for thunderbolt because customers are *****ing about the battery life.
You should try and use 2g only and see if this helps you battery life a little, i guess im just lucky, i have no screen bleed, no reboots and battery life for me is awesome, whit and without 4g.

Dude all the functions are turned on except the radio. I use the phone in airplane mode with WLAN + GPS enabled. I use GPS apps to track my way to Singapore. In downtown they have free WLAN everywhere. Phone last for 2 days this way, but makes no sence of course having a phone without a radio...
Oh and I use Sipdroid with Sipgate to receive and do free phone calls

Just making sure here, but you know that T-Mobile's 4G is still using the same existing 3G connections, thus not requiring it to run on a different band, right? HSPA/HSPA+ connections share the same bands, and thus the "4G" connection is running through the same radio without affecting battery life. WiMAX and LTE operate differently and both run seperate from the EVDO that Verizon and Sprint use for their 3G.
That being said, a radio, regardless, will always drain the battery faster than anything, which is why Wifi Calling is so effective in keeping high battery life.
The other HSPA+ enabled phones on T-Mobile are getting fantastic battery life, as long as you aren't constantly using the displays.
I am leaning to believe that's a major reason why everyone's phones are dying so fast. They've got a new toy so they're always playing with it and killing it quickly. I've done that with every new phone I've gotten. My G1, the Cliq, the myTouch Slide, and now this. Give it a few days and when you're not turning the screen on every five seconds to just flick around the menus, and you'll see your life improve.
Yesterday, for example, I ran my phone off of charge from 11 AM EST until 6 AM EST (6 AM, Monday Morning). This was with moderate use.
Its not just that we're playing with our new toys. This phone most definitely drains battery like its going out of style. I had to drive 90 minutes to the client I was coming to work with today. I unplugged my phone when I left my hotel room (and it was at 100%) and when I got to the office, 2hours and 15 minutes later, having never turned my phone on since I was driving the whole time, my phone was at 82%. That's really bad for a phone idling. I think there's a radio bug or its polling too often because if I let JuiceDefender work, then in the same period of time this evening I was at 94% battery. That's a big difference.

I know HK airport has free WLAN, but places like starbucks/Mcd only offer 30 mins- 2 hours of free WLAN a day.I will be in HK for a month(after I got back from Singapore), so I might need to purchase a pre-paid internet plan..I will be in Singapore for a week, so hopefully they will have unlimited free WLAN there...
IT'S NOT 4G THAT'S KILLING BATTERY. As was stated above it uses the existing 3G network for faster data speeds. Phones like the Thunderbolt and EVO (and anything else that connects to WIMAX or LTE) need a completely separate radio (and thus controller) to connect to 4G.
HSPA+ is just really fast 3G so the existing SOC's that have support on-die for T-Mobile 3G frequencies just have to have a slightly updated version of the hardware (to support either class 10 or class 14 HSPA+).
This would be a perfect example as to why T-Mobile and AT&T shouldn't be able to market HSPA+ as 4G. It confuses people and makes them think that battery life will suck because of it like it does on Sprint and Verizon. When SOC's come out that have on die support for LTE and WIMAX (I think I heard 2012) then battery life for those phones won't suck anymore.

The antena-radio, is using more battery, just because is handling data at a higher rate.
Just like I said before, until there is a way or update to the radio to handle data more efficiently, 4g radio is gonna keep draining battery.
And yes hspa+ and wimax are similar yet incompatible technologies, but the way they handle data take a big chunk out of you battery.
And is a fact that radio is draining most of the battery, and until we get a radio update, battery is gonna drain fast.

I bought my o3d from gum mobile UK, after month and a half daily use, I'm worried if my phone is damaged or not, I have 3 batteries for phone now to survive day at work. When I listen music and use MSN, battery dies after 4 to 5 hours, recently started to happen weird stuff with 2g network, I used to use 2g only option to save battery but now my radio signal is 1 to 0 like week ago I had it all the time at 4. Phone is Simfree and I use o2. Yesterday my 2g network continuously swapped between e to g every min causing my phone staying without signal, so I had to use 3g to get atleast some network signal, its at 0 to 2 on 3g but also was at about 3 to 4 before.
My battery drains like 30 % per hour when playing dungeon defenders 2 and when I'm on standby its about 5 to 10% per hour, I changed LG home to go loader ex to fix Android system to use 60 % of battery but battery life still hasn't improved.
Anyone experience same issue and how good are gum mobile UK return faulty product policy ?

Seems about normal that, battery life is not that good then again most smart phones don't last much these days.
Since you had the phone for a while they might tell you to take it up with lg if you are having issues.
But I don't see it as faulty, though
Today started to happen complete madness with phone, since I'm using 2g most is the time, today my sister couldn't call me neither I could call her back while with 2g network with 3g I could call and text her but when I also tried to call friend of mine who stood next to me, I couldn't because some weird error occur saying that connection was impossible to made. Has anyone experiencing samelately?
I'm on o2 and such weird stuff started to happen few days ago. Is there problem with phone or It's O2?

Perhaps your region isn't so go with 2G?
I mean I dunno for sure this but I have no probs here with my 3G off.
And the battery isn't the best of this phone, but you can do some stuff that might help to improve its life.
At work, where I have access to internet, I switch off the Wi-Fi from my phone and that has helped a lot!
Don't worry your phone shouldn't be a problem. Try to restart it to see if it helps or something.
As its only just started happening then give O2 a call, perhaps they have a problem in your area.
Even if they deny it I would be inclined to give it a week or so before worrying about it being a problem with the phone.
I also have doubts about 2G saving much battery power compared to 3G on the Optimus 3D, as it uses so much power idling anyway. I have tried my phone overnight in airline mode, 2G and 3G, it doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference unless you accidentally leave messenger running which really kills the battery.
I not touched my O3D lately as I hate the battery life, picked up a Galaxy S2 last week and I can easily last 2 days on this phone and the choice of custom roms out is insane, take away the 3D side and it trumps the O3D in every department.
I am absolutely fed up with this phone. Have the above isdues and more. I am so angered that I paid for this piece of junk a efin premium price on a contract and now I'm stuck with this phone. Battery life is unbelievable. Never once had it such lousy batterylife with a smart phone. I have to reboot this jubk phone every then and now to work with it. LG u make me sick.

My Mom on the other hand has her GS3 through Verizon and her battery is dying in roughly half a day. She is not a heavy user at all. In fact, her old Droid 2 would last longer than her GS3 which really has her frustrated.
I think it may be due to the fact she doesn't get a good 4G signal at work and at home. In fact, she gets 1 bar at work if she's lucky. She also said the phone is constantly bouncing back and forth between 3G and 4G while at work. She took it to Verizon today and they swapped SIM cards to be sure that wasn't the problem. Obviously that didn't work because I'm posting here. I will see her on Thursday and she want's me to look at her phone.

It's most likely 3G and 4G switching back and forth or a rogue app. For to turn off the 4G it can't be done without rooting I'm pretty sure.
No, it's because you have task running. I had the same thing happen to me. If you exit an application by pressing home, the program will continue to run in the background. I had gallery take up 38% of my battery life. If you press the back button, it will FC the application.

I'm on verizon as well and I find that my battery dies extremely fast. Full charge in the morning and by bedtime its just about dead, that's with moderate use. Some things that I have found to help is I generally keep bluetooth, and gps off unless I need either. I keep power saving mode on, and really minimized what Sync's through my accounts.
It's not exactly the answer you were looking for but it should help you until a more long term solution can be figured out.

Low tower signal will kill the battery very fast. Frustratingly fast. I have Verizon GS3, have very low signal at work, and I burn 8% battery per hour when phone is idle. With almost no use, my battery is down to 30% by time I go home.
At home I have good tower signal and my battery drops very slow in idle, maybe 1% per hour. At both work and home I have WiFi connected and set to keep WiFi on during sleep always. Therefore I don't think it's data traffic / sync causing the issue. Instead its hyperactive radio hardware or firmware killing itself as it constantly finds/loses tower connection. The only thing I've been able to find to reduce the drain is going into airplane mode... which is obviously a terrible option.
Hope Samsung can improve this self devouring nature in the future!

go to the playstore and download "phone info" open it and go to device information
Swith the " lte/cdma/evdo" into cdma auto (PRL)
I also turn off 4g at work due to weak signal

I believe its a signal search at where she spends most of her time. At my work the signal is very bad and the phone goes from 100% to 20% in 10 hours without even touching the phone. Now I turn on airplane mode and it never drops the battery.
She can disable the data and find out how much that would save her
First make sure it's not a rogue app by going into Settings -> Battery, your top 2 battery usages should be Screen and Cell Standby. As long as you don't have some random app eating away at your battery then it's definitely signal strength related. Does she have Wi-Fi available at work? If so make sure she connects to it. I have a Verizon S3 and the battery life on this phone is better than any Android phone I've ever owned (and I've had a lot). I leave GPS and Bluetooth on all day and can easily get a full day with mid to heavy usage. The biggest thing would be to get her on Wi-Fi if available. This will stop the phone from constantly trying to poll data off a poor signal and significantly increase battery life. If no Wi-Fi available, then the above post would come into play, Phone Info app and switch into cdma to keep it locked into 3g will help, but only if there's a decent 3g signal. If the 3g signal is weak also, then you're not going to help anything, and she will just need to remember to turn data sync off while she's at work.

Try switching batteries to see if she has a defective battery. If thats not the case, then make Verizon give her a replacement S3.
Add me to the list of people who think its the signal search in low service areas.. I disabled 4G with the Phone Info app and my phone lasted way longer than before..
Since you pointed out she has a low signal, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the culprit..

This is what I did, kept the old battery too...then they swapped me for a w S3. My battery is doing much better now.

Ahhh so it wasn't the battery itself?
When you got a replacement S3, did you go back to the same store where you had originally purchased them from or tried a different store?
I disabled 4G today at work with my stinky cell signal and my battery nose dived like usual. Therefore, if you have no signal, 3G/4G doesn't seem to matter. The radio hardware will still destroy itself happily.
Anyone know of a widget my Mom could use to disable data completely while she is at work?

Pull the task drawer down and uncheck mobile data. Why do you need a widget?
You might have a system process called "gsiff_daemon" draining the battery. I have that problem and others have reported that process has been draining their battery as well. Or it could be other have mentioned already, signal switching, rogue programs, etc.
Today at work I ran with mobile data off. I still had a really bad battery drain. Therefore the voice 3 g radio must be responsible. Not much we can do about that unless a new firmware comes out.

There's also an option in the settings>developer options to restrict how many processes are running in the background, and to kill an app after leaving it. The only problem I've noticed with the second option is that the fb app won't allow you to post a status, I think because it causes it to start a new activity, which kills the main fb activity when you leave it. But limiting the background stuff seems to have saved some more juice on top of only using 3g.

Naw man, at home I have good cell signal and have almost no idle drain. At work I have terrible signal and it drains like nuts. It's not an issue with apps, processes, services, etc.

I have had my S3 since it came out and had no trouble on battery until now. I had solid 2 days of usage but since I started to work at this new hospital, I have had to charge the phone after my 8 hour shift.
The phone gets no signal/reception from Verizon at work, so I do not understand why the battery should drain so fast!
I start my day with 100% and by the time I come out, its been around 15 to 12%.
I know the battery is fine because weekends, I do not go to work and the signal at my home is good to keep my phone alive for solid 2 days for a charge.
What can I do to prevent my phone's battery from dying so fast?
Looking for some input, so thanks ahead of time.

In simple terms, the weaker the cell signal is, the harder your phone works to try to improve that signal.
If you get no cell signal at the new hospital, then your phone will eat the battery alive to try and establish a cell signal!
About the only thing you can do in that situation is to put the phone into "Airplane Mode" which will disable the cell radio and save your battery. Once you are out of the hospital, toggle "Airplane Mode" off, and your cell radio will re-establish a cell connection for service.
Download opensignal from the play store and compare the Db rating of the signal at your house to what you are getting at your work

Yes, in my experience with the S4 it's a pretty big difference UNLESS you get a very strong LTE signal. I'm on tmobile and now have the N5 and use the 3G setting which is HSPA/+ Plenty fast for me for what I do. When I want some extra speed I'll kick on the LTE

I just got this phone yesterday so I haven't been able to find out myself yet, just with 5hour battery life from 100% to 4% on what will only be half of its normal day I'm looking for anything to help right now till I get a battery case. This phone is one of only two to have a LTE radio that is supposed to use 30% less power than usual so I'm wondering if that makes it as efficient if not more than 3G for idle in your pocket to light stuff like FlipBoard.
it would depend on the quality of the data connection. im in brooklyn nyc, and use lte on my nexus 5 exclusively, used to use it on my nexus 4 as well. with 3g(hspa+), on both my n5 and n4, i average about 4-4.5 hours screen on time. when using lte, i average about 5-6 hours screen on time on both my nexus 5 and 4. after noticing this difference, i use exclusively lte on both my devices, as i average an hour more screen on time when using exclusively lte.

Serious battery drain can have many reasons. One is having LTE on, syncing on(if you just booted it up, and input your Google account and let all your apps sync and download, its gonna drain your battery fast the first time), having locations on and wifi enabled. If you are in an area with poor reception, your phone will drain more trying to find connection.

Thanks for the information. That's what I was wondering but I couldn't find anyone that had already tested this with these new radios. If I get the time this weekend maybe I'll do my own test in detail to compare LTE to 3G. Am thinking of using a TV episode on Netflix and see which makes the battery drop faster over the 30 or so minutes.
Slightly off topic, does anyone's WiFi show as always on in the battery monitor even if its been off? Still trying to figure out my battery drain issue, if it even is an issue with just me, I bought this phone knowing it had a small battery.

go to the main phone settings, wifi, 3 dots on the bottom right, advanced, then disable scanning always available..

Seems that's a whole other debate on weather leaving that on or turning it off helps battery life. Apparently if you turn it off then apps that want your location will turn the GPS on and waste battery (looking at you Facebook...), but if you leave it on the phone just tells the app your location from WiFi networks around you.
One thing I didn't think about is I had added my work WiFi yesterday but it wouldn't connect to it, wouldn't tell me why but I'm assuming it's because of bad signal as I'm a valet outside and the WiFi is from a bar across the street so I forgot about it but WiFi was left on with that network saved, my Nexus 7 can connect to it on most days and any laptop has no issues but with this being a phone I guess it doesn't have a big enough antenna. So I'm wondering if now that I deleted that WiFi network, and I always have my phone set to not notify me of public networks, if my battery won't die so fast today.
And now I'm just rambling but I just looked at my screenshot I took yesterday of battery use before plugging in at 4% and WiFi isn't even being shown on top six things that used the battery, lowest one being shown is a Chrome process using 3%.
EDIT: Well off to work now with my phone 100% charged, will have screen 100% (am outside in the sun), BT off, WiFi on (disconnected, no saved networks nearby, open network notifications off, always on during sleep, scanning always available, avoid poor connections, and WiFi optimization), LTE on/connected, NFC off. So lets see how things go. It will have tons of screen on time as all I do at work is read through FlipBoard, then if I run out of things on there I move to FB. Lets see how this goes...

Sorry for digging up such an old thread, but with LTE my Nexus 6P, it switches between HSPA and 3G. When turned to 3G, nothing changes. Would that mean I would save battery?
