What is the proper way to wipe the Dalvik Cache on the SamChg?

Couple of ways to do it.
Easiest is use CWR and select the option to wipe dalvik under advanced.
You can manually delete the contents of the /data/dalvik-cache folder via the rm command (google for proper syntax) from the terminal, adb, or with something like root explorer (make sure to mount r/w).
A reboot will rebuild the cache, which will cause your reboot to take considerably longer than normal.

Hello, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can and be clear about everything before I install a custom ROM. I have already rooted the nexus s.
The ROM I'm interested in is this CyanogenMod 7.
In their installation instructions it says
- Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
- Perform a factory reset.
From another guide (AddictiveTips) they just tell us to do the following
- Select wipe factory/data reset.
- Now, wipe cache and dalvick cache.
The xda thread tells us to format system, data, and cache partitions. But the AddictiveTips guide only seem to tell us to format the data & cache partitions.
So my question is, does the system partition automatically get formatted while installing the new ROM, or do you have to manually format it by going to mounts and storage > format system before installing the ROM?
Also, do you guys recommend to format all the required partitions by going to mounts and storage or by selecting wipe factory/data reset and wipe cache from the main menu? Thanks in advance.

Wipe factory/data reset (this will obviously also wipe the caches)
Install zip from SDCard (ROM)
Reboot.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
-reboot system now (reboots system)
-apple update from sd card ( what does this do? )
-wipe data/factory reset (you have to do this everytime u flash a new rom)
-wipe cache partition (what does this do?)
-Install zip from sd card (install rom and kernels)
-backup and restore (make back ups and restore)
-mounts and storage (what does this do?)
-Advance (battery calibration, dalvik cache, right?
-power off ( shuts down )

I know for a fact that...
Wipe cache- just wipes the extra cache (does what it says)
Apply update- can be used to install updates like kernels if the zip is changed to update.zip
Yes when it says wip cache it means the cache partition, and you still need to wipe both caches after a factory reset.

-wipe data/factory reset(good in practice, but not necessary)
Changing ROM:

How do I format the system?
I'm asking this because I'm going to get this phone in like 1-2 days.
Is it necessary to format system? Say Eagleblood to cm7.
When changing kernel, I should do only cache partition and dalvik cache right?

Also, if I format system, that means everything even the rom will be deleted right? Won't mess up partition table or anything like that right for cwm?

This is my first Android device, coming from a iPhone 3GS.
I have flashed rom before using CWM, but that was on my friend's HD2.

Dont forget to backup, just if something goes wrong. Thats before doing the wipes.

Yes. Everything will be deleted. The partitions will not be touched.
Everything I use is as follows:
Wipe data factory reset, this clears all data on your phone, including the present rom and kernel, to make room for the new one.
Wipe cache partition, this clears all saved data and stuff you've been doing on your previous rom.
Install zip from SD card (External SD)
Install zip from internal SD card, normally when you download a rom from your browser lies here.
Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik cache, this I'm not sure what it precisely does, though it clears data from previous roms.
Key test, this is mainly used for fixing broken or not working keys.
And reboot system now speaks for itself.
That's all I use for flashing anything

Hi. I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace, Android 2.3.6, rooted.
I had 2 apps with cache data:
1. the system app "Internet" = 444KB
2. a user app called "RedLaser" (for reading QR codes) = 45KB
I turned off phone, went into recovery, then "wipe cache partition", then reboot.
It did nothing! The two apps still had cache, and I just deleted them manually in Settings -> Manage Applications.
So what does the "wipe cache partition" do anyway?
Also, if a phone is unrooted, is there a way to clean the dalvik cache?

Its for wiping the cache of your phone application..some times if you not do this then you r apps will crash in the new rom..so its optional thing.but some times it needed...understood??
shyamjptpm, did you even read the details of my post? The cache of those two apps were not deleted through "wipe cache partition" in recovery mode. So I was wondering what it does, exactly, since it DOES NOT wipe the apps' cache.
The cache is an app cache, but not a cache of application data. You wipe that through application management (or manually with a file explorer or shell).
Think of it as an Android cache that it uses for apps and components.

No it's not apps - I explained that badly. It's regularly accessed data and app components, but not app-specific data. The Dalvik cache is the application cache - they are two different things.
Additionally depending on which recovery you are using, wiping the cache might not properly work all the time, that is why you read so many posts saying wipe +3; meaning to run the wipe cache (and dalvik) at least 3 times. I know I had issues with one specific recovery and switched to another because of it...

And wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache will delete my game progress??

I am always confused about this. When flashing a custom ROM, will wiping the system not delete the ROM zip file?
Also is wiping cache, system and data the only things I need to do.
Like there are so many confusing posts in and out of xda. The official CM page says nothing about wiping cache and system while the CM FAQ page here says to wipe all three I.e. cache , data and system.
Some say to do factory reset and some say not to.
What do I do man?
Cache, Data, System and Internal Storage are all separate partitions. Wiping one does not affect the others. Factory reset usually does the first three, you have to manually specify anything else.
Your ROM zip will be on the 'Internal Storage' partition which is why it survives a system wipe.

It's a very good idea. Not wiping can cause all kinds of problems. Order does not matter.

Wipe them all if you want, but factory reset is usually enough.
follow the instructions in the ROM thread where you looked, some steps omitted or changed to be installed, I hope you have no problems, I recommend that you make a backup of your current ROM.
I'm using a spare phone to try this out.
I'm looking to sell a phone, and want to clean it, leaving only fresh / default (bare bones) directory structure..
Is this possible? If so, how would I accomplish this?

if you have twrp then go to wipe-advanced-check internal storage, dalvik cache and data.
if not then settings-backup & reset-Factory reset
