[i9003] vs [i9000] - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

Hello everyone, by chance i got both the mobiles with me for a month
[i9003] and [i9000] galaxy S.
Comparison:
1. The screen of i9000 is better than i9003, but i9003 is more like true colours.
I9000 got a yellowish tinge on the screen, which is not that good !
2. Camera of i9003 is better than i9000, really.
3. Processing of i9003 is much faster than i9000.
4. Graphics of i9000 is better.
5. Battery life of i9003 is slightly better than i9000
6. Sound quality of i9003 and i9000 is similar, tested with several headphones on both, couldn't make out any difference.
NOTE: i9003 had xxkb3 firmware and i9000 had gingerbread latest 2.3.4(xxjvp)
IF ANY MORE DOUBTS, PLEASE ASK SOON AS I JUST HAVE IT FOR SOME MORE TIME !!

Wow.
I'd never thought the i9003 would win on so many aspects! I don't mean to insult you, but I wanted to ask several questions to clarify this matter (signed up as a noob just to post in this thread )
- Are the two devices fair to compare? (In terms of age, OS version, apps installed and running in background, etc.)
- What are the symptoms that made you decide that i9003 has better processing power?
- When you said that the i9003 has better camera, what aspects did you mean? And is there any noticable difference in the time they take to shoot and save a picture?
- Have you compared the loudspeaker and the earpiece (instead of using an earphone)? What are the results?
I'm sorry for the many questions. I am very excited about this topic. Many thanks to you

This sounds strange: If screen is better then it is better. BTW the different is not only in colors, but also in:
1. SAMOLED uses more power in white screen than SLCD (SLCD uses more power in black screen)
2. SLCD has better sharpness because of different structures of pixels
Look at these pictures (SAMOLED is in the left side)
http://www.gsmarena.com/showpic.php.../phone/gsmarena_006.jpg&idReview=562&idPage=2

Hello all I have both handset but sl used by me and galaxy s is by my brother.
What I have notice that:
1. Lcd is produce more nature color picture (but black not that nature compare to sgs)but somehow amoled is overall winner. But in my opinion I like my Slcd.
2. battery of sl is better, you can get 1 or 2 hour.
3. Rest both handset Are same but sgs beat Sl in huge in graphic department. It has more capable gpu.
4. One thing I don't like about my sl is it unable to play unconverted 720 mkv available on net. Where my sgs play them smoothly with native player.
5. One more thing make huge difference is custom rom and developer support in community.
In the end Sgs is overall winner.
I consider sgsl good buy due to its price in india but unability to play hd mkv smoothly is make me anger on such a Great device.

1. Yes, the two devices are fare to compare, as they have similar hardware, with only minute differences and there are a lot of people out there waiting for a practical comparision of two.
(i9000 has an edge running latest gingerbread that also 2.3.4, but i9003 will also get that soon)
2. Processing Power: opening the gallery, i9000 takes more time, i9000 still lags at many places(though i think that can be fixed) and in some more places i could feel practically.
3. i9003 better camera: it does click quickly, but the main comparison in quality is because of the tinge that i9000 has cause of amoled, the pictures on i9003 are far better, comparing with same settings(side by side), i still got to compare them putting on laptop.
4. i compared the sound quality via headphones only, asi dont have digital equips for that, but i could't find any difference.

Fail on so many behalfs, its amazing how many people will read something and believe it.
Both processors are clocked @ 1GHz, although the hummingbird comes out on top as the best single core processor, do your research.
We have bluetooth 3.0, i9003 has 2.0
Graphics processor we have the SGX540 and the i9003 has the SGX530.
Super AMOLED/+ screens are beautiful to look at, can't get much better really.
Simple, there's a reason why the i9003 is cheaper.
Also, the better battery life on the i9003 is due the the battery being 1650mAh and the i9000 being 1500mAh

JOKE -.- No offense though! I have seen SL in action..my close friend has it but haha declaring SGSL winner over SGS JOKE!

AFAIK, hummingbird is claimed to perform 10-20% better than OMAP (both @ 1GHz), which is why I'm surprised at your results

Opening the gallery can be affected by numerous factors such as the number of pictures, the number of folders, etc.
At what places exactly does the i9003 lags? I'm most interested in the UI (will most probably use Go Launcher EX, if that helps)

What, specifically, makes you believe so strongly?
I think it's better to be specific here because people's needs vary. I, for one, don't really care about gaming performance, save for the occasional bird-hurling , which doesn't really use much GPU as much as it uses the CPU (to calculate the physics and all).
Thanks before

seriously i never said i9003 is better than i9000.. both have their pros and cons...it was just a comparision and i never said i9000 was inferior or anything.
(Left pic:i9000, right:i9003

First of all..it lagged pretty badly while multi-tasking....
Secondly..admit it..SAMOLED just looks SOO better after the VOODOO color fix! (w/o it too!).
Third point Gaming performance and Hummingbird chip=win!
Fourth point XDA Support! We are a family of more than 10 million!!
Pros of SGSl
1. Cheaper! (Big factor of our market (INDIA))
2. Comparable to its big bro i9000 but NOT its replacement
3. Upgradeable to 2.3 like i9000(I hope so..have u guys got GB yet? )

Dude shudnt u be the one doin the research???sgsl has bt 3.0. Just google abt the cpu and u will get to kno which one is better.samoled vs slcd is a matter of personal choice.i m quite sure u hav never seen a sgsl display thats why u r so arrogant in ur remark.cause ppl who has seen both tend to go for the slcd due to usablity issues.excpt for the gpu part sgs is by no means better than sgsl.then again whats the use of such gpu when i m playin all the hd games currently available flawlessly.u may like ur sgs.but that doesnt allow u to flaunt around tryin to disrespect other peoples opinion. the sgs that r available currently are refurbished ones.so ppl who r plannin to go for sgsl,do it.u wont regret, unless u want an awesome gpu without any practical use.

Hmm.. I can live with subpar screen, also without outstanding gaming capabilities..
The XDA support is something I will *someday* miss, I suppose. I've always wanted to know what Cyanogen is all about
However, between i9000 and i9003, I can't choose i9000, as it's gone extinct here in Indonesia. I was merely using i9000 as a benchmark for i9003's performance, but that's for my own personal purposes and needs
Edit:

U r right but gpu part goes to sgs. Day to day life hd mkv play important role to me. Yes our sgsl can play all available games with good framerate. But I dont think majority of people play graphic intensives games but most of people want atleat a device which can handle unconverted movies on their device. I have invest my 20k in sgsl and not happy with this news.
Otherwise this device Is great buy over sgs.

Dude just check the two phones side by side and look at the display and it will be easier to decide ;-)
This is so funny.ppl keep braggin abt gamin performance of sgs.seriously dude, just check youtube and see how asphalt 6 runs on sgsl.lol.games are made in a way so that they can run on majority of the devices.they arent sgs or power vr540 exclusive.and its not computer games we are talkin abt here.like i said awesome gpu with no practical use.

Dude the movie playback issue is due to driver issue.not hardware.just hav patience and wait.sumthin will turn up.then agn it takes only 5 or 6 min extra for kies to convert the files without any loss of quality at all.so dont be so unhappy for that extra 5mins man.

lol my milestone is better than sgs ...my milestone can be oc upto 1.2ghz and it has a cpu of just 600 mhz and gaming is much better on 480*854 resolution and i have got good battery life in 1400 mhz and both sgsl and milestone having ARM Cortex A8 processor, PowerVR SGX530 and the only diff. is the frequency of cpu

SGS has the better support developer wise. Cyanogen mod etc. end of story.
no app in the android market is gonna take advantage of the Power VR540 gpu.
OMAP is a better processor than hummingbird for heaven's sake, just because of its extensive overclocking capabilities! however on the SGSL, since OMAP cannot be overclocked i guess i'll have to give it to hummingbird.
AMOLED is awesome. period.
battery consumption on SGS is lower, due to AMOLED. hence the 1500mah battery. SGSL sucks battery life wise. SLCD is a battery hog.
conclusion? in the current scheme of things, going for SGSL makes more sense, economically, and maybe one can upgrade to SGS II next year.

I was able to compare the two displays side by side and I must say that while samoled has better contrast and awesome blacks, slcd is sharper. I personally prefer sharpness to deeper black.
Besides, I'll never buy a samoled device because samoled burns so easly... in less than a year you'll have a permanent system bar on the top of the display, and this sucks if you spent 500€.

i don't see why would you put this in the development topic
closed?

Just for Vibrant user's, How many switched and why?

Just curious to know why you gave up on the Vibrant?
I bought the Vibrant on launch day - LOVED IT....
Then.... the GPS problems started... and seemed to get worse over time, to the point where the phone was rebooting itself when I used the GPS for more than just a few minutes (regardless of the app).
I updated to JI6 when it was released by Samsung since it was supposed to fix the issues, or at least make them a little better. HA! I used GPS that night on the way home, had a strong GPS lock... I was about half way home and looked down and it showed me in the middle of a river. What was truely laughable was that it was saying accurate to within 30 feet - and ever better was that the river it showed me in the middle of was over a mile away!
I swapped the Vibrant for a Nexus One, but after having seen the performance of the MT4G and the fact that everything I ever had rooted for before on other phones was right there ready to go stock-out-of-the-box on the MyTouch, I made the leap.
Something else that sold me - the screen. I can actually read the screen in sunlight better than I could the Nexus... Sure, the Vibrant was a little better in that area than the Nexus, but still not as good as this.
Oh yes - the front facing camera was a selling point as well. A lot of my friends (I say that term loosely since I dont like being associated with crApple fans!) have iphones and use video chat a lot via Tango - I just wanted to be part of the crowd without further lining Job's pockets and no way in hell was I going to AT&T.

Led notifications, ffc, samsung, and one of the main reasons... The horrible plastic feel
Samshitty, need I say more? Hardware not in sync with software does no good at all. Myt4G= Latest operating system, better processor/hardware, ffc, desk clock(best), FM radio, Sense (Love it) pinch to zoom email, best browser, better gaming, Genius button, no lag, less expensive, wifi calling, More ram (768), best battery to date, everything just works and is included. Unlike the predecessors, no need for make-shifts to get the stuff we want. It is more of a complete package then any Android phone to date.
I'm gonna keep using both but the mytouch is the superior phone. For me, the overall function of the mytouch is the reason. There are some things that the vibrant does do better though - 1. The samoled on the vibrant is definitely better (I love the true blacks and contrast ratio on this thing) 2. The speakers are also noticeably better with richer and fuller sound 3. The GPU is also more capable 4. Audio quality for media is better (mytouch and HTC phones in general have too much bass and not enough detail) 5. The camera while lacking flash is more capable 5. The multitouch, responsiveness, and feel of the screen is better 6. And the last thing is the notification bar is the best I've seen on an Android phone (the ability to have those toggle settings, change brightness by swiping, and change music tracks are amazing). Everything else, the mytouch does better. 1) GPS is much better 2) Solid feel while the vibrant felt plastic and creaked 3)FFC 3. Camera flash 4. Froyo 5. Optical trackpad 6. Much better battery life 7. The user experience is buttery smooth with little or no lag on this thing 8. The notification led
Wow sorry for the essay guys, got a little carried away haha.
When you say the plastic creaked, were you handling the white one? Only the white one has all that plastic - the rest have hard rubber - no creaking involved!

My bad man, I meant the vibrant felt plastic and creaked. I fixed it in my post. I have the black mytouch, feels really good with the rubberized plastic. You're right though, only the white has the plastic (main reason I chose the black over white, the other being a three-toned color setup for white which looks funny IMO).
I jumped ship tonight aswell. Main reason for me is because I love the widgets and the fact that I have a notification light after months of torture.
just picked up the mytouch 4g in plum color last night. will need to use this device for at least a few weeks to gauge whether i want to sell my vibrant or not. since i have two phone lines, as one phone is for my job, i will probably end up keeping both and just sell my hd2.
my opinion as it stands now, towards the vibrant, is that the vibrant can be the best android phone available if and when samsung fixes all the issues on the upcoming froyo 2.2 update. i.e., laggy rfs file system and persistent problems with gps even after the ji6 update.
I used the Vibrant from the first week's release. The Vibrant screen is way overrated. Sure, the blacks looks a thought they've been painted on the screen, but that's really how far I would go with its advantages. Readability on the MT4G is vastly better. And, the thing that made the Vibrant terrible was its color reproduction. White were blueish, and because the white balance was so off, all other colors were just completely off. This phone can show true whites. Another subtlety is the fact that varying brightness levels is oh so much smoother on the mt4g. You can't achieve that yet with SAMOLED, as brightness levels would go up or down in stages. I found it a little distracting.
The rfs file system was a main deal breaker to me. It got really annoying. Why did Samsung have to try and be different? It caused the majority of the lag in the phone in comparison to similar phones with the same specs.
For example, when I ran the Napster and Thumbplay apps on the Vibrant, it would take foreeeeever to load the album art and no other phones except Samsung phones have that problem apparently. On the mt4g, it loads instantaneously.

#4 reason is open to debate. Some say the GPU on myt4g is better than the Vibrant. I've used the vibrant rooted almost a month and I think myt4g GPU is better. Next G2 and then the Vibrant.
http://androidevolutions.com/2010/1...wervr-sgx540-hummingbird-in-samsung-galaxy-s/
The Hummingbird wins in one area of GPU only. in all other areas G2 wins. Which is slightly inferior to myt4g processor.
No more Sammy for me!
I had the same issues with the Vibrant as just about everyone else who has posted replies:
- unuseable GPS
- no camera Flash
- No notification light
- No FFC
- I hate capacitive buttons
- no trackpad
- no HSPA+
The only thing I liked better about the Vibrant is the screen...it is a beautiful screen that the MT4G can't compete with, but with all the other problems the Vibrant has, the screen is not enough to make me keep it.
I spent more time flashing ROM's on my Vibrant than actually using it...sure, it makes you feel cool for the first week when you are adding new features and trying new ROM's, but it gets very old very quickly when the UI changes, but the crappy hardware is still limited and there is nothing you can do about that except to buy a decent phone...for now, that is the MT4G.

The main drawback to the Vibrant's screen, IMO, was the jaggy text. amoled and S-amoled screens use the pentile arrangement of pixels, which gives one less sub-pixel to each individual pixel (2 instead of 3). This makes text look pixelated.
Text looks very sharp and clear on the MT4G. Speed and good GPS are the two main reasons I switched. HTC just knows how to make android phones. Everything works very well on the phone and it flies!

You could very well be correct but I kinda wanna see the tests once the Galaxy S phones get Froyo for a fair comparison. It is a known fact that Froyo adds somewhat of a boost to graphics performance seen by older Snapdragon processor phones performing better in graphics benchmarks after updating to Froyo. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I am right but from using both phones, it seems like the Vibrant is able to handle 720p HD videos and games a little better (the games could be due to devs not coding the games properly for the new Adreno 205). If you guys wanna see a comparison, I say you run the same games and HD videos side by side, and not rely too much on benchmark numbers. What I find interesting is that, the video frames are noticeably smoother on the Vibrant when running the Quadrant benchmark.

Froyo does it no good as far as the GPU. It is designed to enhance optimize the CPU. JIT. Which is why even with JIT activated on the leaked froyo (att) it didn't improve in MFLOPS where the Qualcomm processors did. (5) times improvement. AS for games. I have been playing asphalt on the myt4G and it is a better experience then the vibrant. (butter)
The above poster is right when he says that HTC does better with Android then Samsung. All the Samsung Android devices had problems. Most notably, no support. HTC makes better Android devices. Period.

I know JIT mostly improves CPU performance but phones such as the Nexus One did get a little bit of a GPU jump in graphics benchmarks after getting Froyo. The reason I think is because these graphics benchmarks are not 100% GPU only; a little bit of CPU is involved as well. An example of a CPU affecting graphics is the PS3, the CPU does wonders for it which is evident through amazing graphics in first party games like uncharted 2 because the system is being used more efficiently. Another thing that Froyo adds is better memory management (unlocks hi mem and manages it better) which should also affect these scores a little IMO. I just don't think it's a fair comparison until the Vibrant receives the actual Froyo update, that's all I'm saying. It could be the case that they are even or that the adreno 205 is better, we'll find out once Froyo arrives.
P.S I whole-heartedly agree with you two that HTC makes a lot better android phones, heck phones in general, than Samsung.

Why sensations scores low, on all benchmarks?

I have viewed a loot of benchmarks [ antutu, quadrant, neocore, an3dbenchxl..etc]
And all of those benchmarks the sensation scores are low...
Lower than LGo2X, and similar to a O/C DesireHD...
Is that Normal? THis QSD 8260 it's suposed to be a beast, and the same with the adreno 220... but i can't se the beast.... ( maybe need optimization? )
Ideas?
Idk but its kind of bothering me. I bought this phone on day one thinking it would have the speed of the g2x without the hardware problems, but I really think Sense 3.0 is hindering the performance. Can't wait to get a Rom on here to speed things up :/
On WiFi I can only get 10k down, and 2k up. Lame.

well to me, Sense is working bad... isn't fluid and now i'm with GO Launcher EX wich is more fast and fluid than sense....
Ah, with some games, sometimes lags, and i think it's sense.
we need to wait right now.
sense it only a small part of the problem...
2.3.3 isnt really optomized for our hardware, not to mention that almost ALL benchmark software doesnt fully support our SoC chipset
when we get S-OFF and clean/scrubbed roms, we will be pulling real capabilities from benchmark software, especially with 2.3.4 and 2.4 when available

How about overheatings, and extremly battery drainages? this will be improved to?
I think, adreno220 is more powerfull and newer than Mali400M, and QSD8260 par with Exynos.
So i think, when this phone becomes S-OFF and gets better roms, will beat, or close to the SGSII.

this is quite true, but the QSD8260 has a couple more features than the exynos, not to mention single core voltage optimization, where as the SGS2 runs both cores at single voltage...
as for the overheating, at first it will irk you, but it never gets too hot, and considering the hardware in this thing, and its thickness, its to be expected
and as for the battery drain, you can thank the carriers for that bull****, after running temp root and disabling a whole whack of useless apps, i have around 250mb ram constantly, and i got roughly 6-8 extra hrs of battery life

That is true, the QSD8260 have that feature ( and other new features ), it's good! but Galaxy SII doesnt overheat like sensation.
Maybe my rom from vodafone is fulll of **** ( Sense 3.0 isn't fluid on mine... and is **** compared to another alternative launcher for now... )
About temporal root, is a ****!! we need a full root.
I'm working on HTCCamera.apk ( in part thanks to potato, helped me with indications )
TO get better and decent image/video quality, when the phone becomes full rooted, surely i will release it, and i hope will work very well, but i can't test it because i don't have root.
i agree full root is NECESSARY for anything to be done on this fone, fre3vo reminds me the the HEN hacks for psp back in the day
as for teh htccamer.apk, good on ya! there are some issues with it, my biggest being focus on really close ups

Temp root is just a step on the way to full root, it's not like the devs got it temp rooted and said "well ****, I'm glad we got that done, let's move on to the next phone!" I'm sure they put in a lot of hours just to get this far already and are putting in a lot more to get full root, so saying that temp root is **** is pretty ****ed up and disrespectful to all the devs that are working hard to give YOU and all the other ungrateful bastards full root.
Sorry for going off a little there, just frustrating to see people act like nothing is being done and belittling big accomplishments on the path to the final goal.
i agree, its more of a PoC/dev tool than something for average users to use, epecially for setting up androidSDK
superoneclick is nice, but you dont learn anything about how/why its working, and if you dont want to know that stuff, why would you need root in the first place?
6-8 hours battery? wow. I go from 7 am till 7 pm and have 30ish% left almost every day. I came from an EVO 4g which required battery changes twice a day sometimes. i had batteries charging everywhere. I expected the same or worse from the sensation but am proud to be wrong. I have 4 extra batteries for this and an extra charger at home and work, only needed to swap a couple of times in over a month. I wasted money on sensation batteries.. Strange how some have so many battery troubles with this phone and i have had great results with 2 sensations. 250% better than my EVO 4g. After root and custom kernels and roms i may get 2 days use out of this bad boy.. Just hope they can get the other issues straightened out (touch screen issues, which is actually working great right now) so i can really enjoy this thing!
Benchmarks are over rated and not on mobile phone and very inconsistent,my evo 3d and sentation scores the same on quadrant my highest score on shi**y qaudrant is 2450. If I totally relied on benches is wait and get a SG2, but I don't. Like others have said sense 3.0 weights heavily on CPU. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Touchwiz is a very light ui compared to sense. I'm happy with it in real world use.

i get 6-8hrs more on top of my regular 8-10 hrs, but mind you i use A LOT of data on my phone, and always listening to music...
so realistically, i could get much more out of it, but considering i had the same issue with my HD2 that you had with your EVO, its a world of difference
EDIT: also, nugzo, apparently the latest OTA fixes the touchscreen and GPS problems, if they do happen to you...
Sensation - 'poor' performance
The MAIN reason why the HTC Sensation has lower benchmark scores than other phones in this class is that it has to push 33% more pixels ! It`s screen has a 960x540 resolution; the GS2 for example only pushes 800x480 pixels !
@razvan
another excellent point, i keep forgetting that, qHD is now "normal" for me that it slips my mind
they are low cuz its slow...

the funny thing is I kept reading that the quadrant and benchmark apps were not optimized for the sensation. How you have to factor in pixel compression and other things to explain the low scores. After having the phone for almost two weeks, and playing with the Evo 3D - the phone is average to slow (for my expectation) for a dual core device. The scores are consistently low for a reason.
The benchmark apps might not be "optimized" but gx2, gs2 and evo 3d users testify to the speed of their devices. I have seen it up close too. Lag AND my phone crashed last night, unexpectedly, and the tell htc prompt came up. what the hell??
I am keeping the phone, but I am not an apologist. The sensation is lacking (to me) and I should not have to wait for root for me to feel like my phone competes with other phones in its class - speed wise.

I have both the SGS2 and HTC Sensation.
One thing I know is that the CPU on the SGS2 is alot better than the QSD8260. The reason is due to different architecture Cortex A8 vs Cortex A9. Also my evidence is from Smartbenchmark2011. SGS2 scores around 3.8k and the Sensation around 2.5k which isn't bad and the screen QHD doesn't lower the benchmark for CPU.
I don't how you guys got Adreno 220 to better than Mali 400MP ?
SGX543MP4 > SGX543MP2 & Mali 400MP > Tegra & Adreno 220 & SGX540 (Although Tegra maybe abit better than both)
The reason why Adreno 220 is on per with Tegra is quadrant 2D and 3D benchmarks. The framerate on the Atrix 4G and the Sensation is about equal and they both use qHD. Which in theory means that the LG Optimus 2X framerate can be said as equal to an Adreno 220 at 800x480 resolution.
Although on Smartbenchmark2011 the Atrix scores alot higher GPU than the Adreno 220.
All these are based on my phone benchmark scores as well as other people posted on youtube to backup.
so nobody with a s-off sensation has loaded a rom on it yet and run a benchmark?

[Q] Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S II?

So I have an iPhone 4S right now.
Long story short, I switched from iPhone 4 to Droid X2. Hated how sluggish the X2 was but LOVED the openness of Android. And returned it and switched to the 4S when it arrived.
I love the look of Ice Cream Sandwich and every preview shows it running incredibly smoothly. It felt as though Android was in beta before ICS, and that it's finally moved into Gold product stage.
I'm dying waiting for the Nexus and mainly want it because it will have Ice Cream Sandwich.
My question is, should I just get the Galaxy S II or should I wait another few weeks for the Nexus? I don't care that much about 4G LTE. I DO want ICS. I've been reading the forums and it seems the S II is closing to get an ICS ROM that's fully functional.
What does everyone think? Get the S II today or wait a few more weeks for the Nexus?
2 days ago I would have said get the SII. But as full reviews are coming out now, I would definitely wait for the Nexus. Other than ICS, it is reviewed as an all around better phone (minus the camera, which is better on the SII). I do not own an SII, but you are going to get some disgustingly bias comments from people who do. Like I said, I am basing this off of reviews from reputable sites.
Thanks!
I'm very tempted by the Nexus (and the reviews are awesome!) I just have no idea when it's going to arrive. This month? December 8?
I'm very tempted by the S II because I'm hearing it runs pretty much as well as the Nexus, ICS is almost ready to be released (through ROMs, I'm sure the "official" release is a ways away), and it's cheaper.
Tough decision. I'm tired of iOS though and want to move on to a grown up OS. I just don't want to keep waiting. Argh.
Yes I'm bias I own an SGS2 but just check the specs out, lower spec camera, amoled not amoled+, no guerilla glass! The only real plus the Nexus Galaxy has is vanilla ICS and the SGS2 will have ICS soon enough whether it be Sammy ICS or custom ROM ICS.
Look at the price difference for lower specs, are you willing to pay that much more just to have ICS early??

Better hardware, better software, better CPU, and I will quote the part about the display
"The other significant thing about the screen is its resolution. It’s a 720p HD Super AMOLED panel (full resolution 1280x720), similar to the display on the Samsung Galaxy Note. And just as we said in our review of that phone, this is about as good as it gets in terms of display technology on a portable device."
The only thing lower spec is the camera...this is a developer phone, who cares about the camera.
SGSII is better. The processor in the Galaxy Nexus is not as good as the ones in the world SGS2 or the Epic Touch. The only thing this phone has really is the higher resolution screen. Tit for tat it's ok, but not ground-breaking.
Why 5MP camera on a higher res than throwing in a better 8MP camera like the one on the SGS2
Plus the hype about the phone, and the true specs were a let down just to be able to run ICS. And as far as vanilla android all of the other makers have the ability to run stock android with out the company's UI.
I have used a Galaxy Nexus and the only thing I liked was the incredible screen. The rest was crap...including ICS.

Hey, I am just going off of reviews from well known sites THAT HAVE TRIED BOTH PHONES! Until someone else chimes in that has in fact used both phones for more than 24 hours, your argument holds no ground. I have taken probably a total of 15 pictures with my phone in the past year, so I could really care less about the camera..
More reasons not to go with the Nexus, 16gb USB storage and NO SD card expansion.
No flash until Adobe support it later in the year!?!
And I meant SAMOLED and SAMOLED+.

The question for me, I guess, is how close are we to having a working custom ICS rom for the S II? I like the specs of the S II better, and would prefer the smaller screen - I think 4.65" is pretty big.
I just want to be able to have ICS and not have to wait months and months for the Samsung official update with everything skinned. I want Vanilla android or something close to it, but would love it on the S II.
Interesting thread !
Since I keep questionning myself about the very same question at the moment, I'm constantly doing prons and cons game
Here is my observations so far :
Screen
Galaxy S II : smaller screen (4.3") but S-Amoled Plus and Gorilla Glass. No waste of screen since it got hardware buttons
Galaxy Nexus : bigger (4.6") not "plus" but more DPI and 720p, everyone accords to qualify it to sharper. Good for visioning (films etc)
CPU / GPU
Since the two got the same CPU (Cortex A9 dual core), let's take a look a the GPU
SGS2 : Mali 400Mp, strong for graphic features
SGN : PowerVR SGX540, not so good with graphic features
Here is a beanchmark comparison : http://www.anandtech.com/show/5133/galaxy-nexus-ice-cream-sandwich-initial-performance
The choice of Google seems to go for user experience (general use, browsing etc). I don't think le GN is tailored to be a gaming beast for example
Hardware
The SGN doesn't have any micro-SD slot and can't do mass storage out of the box (but XDA dev are here for sure ), it's a Google choice to unify the storage : http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...behind-galaxy-nexus-lack-of-usb-mass-storage/
No notification LED for the SGS2 but got the jack above
Camera is better on SGS2 but since the captor on a mobile phone are not very good ... Can we really see a difference ?
So ?
So the choice is yours
The 2 devices are great, it really depends what you are seeking for
I don't speak about ICS since everyone here know it will come to the SGS2 soon
If you want a device for gaming, I say go for the SGS2
If you want a new device and a good big beautifull screen, pick the SGN
What do you think ?
EDIT : a usefull link to compare the 2 : http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3621&idPhone2=4219

The 4.65 inch screen is a little misleading. Since there are no hardware buttons, the bottom part of the screen is dedicated for this. With that part of the screen gone, it is comparable to 4.3".

Yeah but the on screen buttons are hidden when you got a full screen app (videos, games, apps developpers set to fullscreen) so you got a real 4.65" screen for that

Yea, quite a bit of issues. But it is to be expected with a newly released phone, and the SGSII has many of the same issues. One note about the volume bug issue (which I hear is the most predominent issue). That would not affect users in the United States. It only happens on an Edge network running a certain frequency that is not supported here.
Get it
As a person who went through this, then thought screw it, I'll take the leap.
GET THE NEXUS
It is an amazing phone and in my opinion equally to the SGSII better taken into account the software.
My main point was- I don't like the SII I much prefer the look and shape of the Nexus.
However the main plus point is the Camera and stock android.
No lag at all with the camera and no crappy touchwiz meaning that you don't HAVE to root to get rid of it.

Sprint Galaxy S3 or EVO 4G LTE?

My upgrade isn't until Oct 1st, but I've been doing a lot of research on what phone to get. I have an OG EVO that I've been very happy with, so I'm leaning towards HTC, but the GS3 is also very impressive. Even after playing with both phones for quite awhile in the store and reading a lot of comparisons and threads online, I still can't decide. My impressions so far:
HTC EVO 4G LTE
Likes:
More accurate colors - See this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijBzWmYnZGI, starting at 6:00
Kickstand - I love the kickstand. I use it constantly on my OG EVO.
Sense UI - I'm used to it and like how it looks and feels
Physical camera button - No explanation required here.
Dislikes:
Poor multi-tasking - overly aggressive task killer
Mitigating Factor - Fixed in most ROMs
No Menu button - I don't like the three dots black bar on non-ICS compliant apps
Mitigating Factor - Can remap task list button to menu
1GB RAM - less impressive that the GS3's 2GB
Mitigating Factor - May not matter any time soon? Even Nexus 7 only has 1GB.
Low fps video recording
Mitigating Factor - I rarely record videos with my phone.
Non-replaceable battery
Mitigating Factor - Much better battery life than OG EVO, which I never used a 2nd battery anyways. I plug in everywhere.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Likes:
Good multi-tasking - I like the task manager design and it's not aggressive when it comes to killing tasks.
2GB RAM - Possibly more future proof?
30 fps video recording - Smoother videos.
Replaceable battery - Self explanatory. You run out of battery, you pop in a new one.
Dislikes:
Oversaturated colors - See video from above.
Mitigating Factor - None. The intentional version of GS3 has a display mode switch with a Natural Mode, but that's not present in the US version for some reason.
Low max brightness
Mitigating Factor - None. Could be a problem in bright daylight.
No kickstand - This is a bummer, because it's a feature I use daily on my OG EVO.
Mitigating Factor - There are cases with built-in kickstands, but not sure if that'd make the phone too thick.
TouchWiz UI - I don't like how it looks.
Mitigating Factor - Can replace it with Apex Launcher, which I do like.
Suspect build quality history - The trend with Samsung's build quality hasn't been good.
Mitigating Factor - Anecdotal reports seem to indicate that the build quality is much improved in the GS3. But it hasn't been out long enough to establish any kind of trend lines.
Anyways, thoughts and comments to help me decide?
EDIT: Also, please vote in the poll!
I'm personally proud to be an HTC fanboy. Which surprises me to no end that I would prefer sgs3. I've had the pleasure of using the both, and the sgs3 wins hands down in my honest opinion. Holding the sgs3 in your hand is like a firm welcoming handshake lol. Evo 4g lte is a good phone too, my biggest dislike is the whole battery thing. I personally stock up on at least two OEM battery's and one extended each time I buy a phone, because I like to not have to charge my phone multiple times per day.

EVO LTE
I am a huge fan of the EVO LTE, the only downside is that until LTE is rolled out in my area, the 3g is so slow. Overall, this phone is a huge upgrade from the OG EVO (which I loved). Photos are very clear, the menu button is no big deal when you can flash the menu remap, audio is nice a crisp on headphones.

I'm comparing the US (Sprint) versions, so they both have the same Snapdragon S4 SoC I do notice the smoothness of the SG3 though. But I wonder if Jelly Bean will equalize things? I took some pictures with both in the store, and the image quality appear comparable. Why do you say that the SG3 has a better camera?
As for the screen, I stated my preference for the more natural colors on the SLCD2 vs the over-saturated colors on the SAMOLED. Just my person preference really

My contract is up now, and sadly my Evo 3D is starting to feel the wear and tear of it (drops, dings, trim coming off).
I've pretty much always have had HTC devices, but the S III has really peaked my interest!
Only thing I'm worried about in choosing, is the screen brightness/colors.
I was in the store today and felt like the HTC screen was crisper and brighter. The brightness on both was turned all the way up, and I'm concerned this is not something a ROM or app could increase (unlike volume and other things). Am I wrong?
Also, someone mentioned HTC's early exit from their flagship phones, and I didn't think about that... but they're right, they do abandoned their phones quicker it seems (of course, I've never had anything BUT HTC phones, so maybe it's par for the course and I'm just mad.)
Only other issue I could foresee is the physical camera button. I do use mine a lot on the 3D, and always liked it, but I wonder if I would miss it.
Again, the screen brightness/color is my biggest concern.
Any thoughts on the two?
Great thread btw!

That's my biggest concern. And no it's not something that can be changed in software, at least not the max brightness. But I think some people like the over-saturated colors because it tends to make pictures "pop". But it just looks really unnatural to me. Did you watch the review video I posted in the first thread? it shows you what I'm talking about (also they do an outside usability test).

I've heard a lot of complaints about Samsung abandoning support on their phones or taking forever on releasing updates. So I don't think Samsung is any better in this area. Maybe they area bout the same?
LTEVO for me.
I dislike the way samsung bent over for apple when building the device, the pentile screen, and touchwiz UI (looks like crayola designed it). The SIII had great marketing & release on all of the major carriers.
I love the EVO's camera/camera app, HTC's build quality (Siii feels like a childs toy in my hands) & our developers. From your list in the OP, its pretty clear you prefer to LTEVO. Just make the jump.

OP: The processor is the same in both of them. The ram, as you said, is unneeded and probably won't be for a while. The internals are pretty much the same, so this comes down to the appereance of the device and the Evo LTE wins in the beautification department.

I think the RAM alone is worth it, they're not too different than each other.
But in terms of futureproofing and probably development, the SGS3 is the way to go, especially if not the Verizon variant.

By the time we get around to using that ram the processor will be out dated. OP: You could probably sweet talk yourself into an early upgrade.

HTC M4(News updated on #55) finally leaked news!

News updated on #55
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_readying_720p_jb_m4_and_budget_ics_g2_for_spring-news-5462.php
4.3" 720P
2GB ram
1.2G S4 CPU(lol?)
16GB rom(still...)
13M cam f/2.0(same as M7)
720p front cam
LTE
1700mAH battery
Sense 5.0 on JB4.2
The CPU is same as One SV(down-clocked S4) but I doubt it very much because it would not make any existing One S customer to upgrade. So, I think the CPU should at least stay the same with One S(1.5G) or little faster(like 1.7G).
I think the LCD should change to SLCD2 this time instead of AMOLED Plus like One SV(4.3" SLCD2). I actually quite like AMOLED on phone because of perfect black but SLCD2(IPS) has better viewing experiences under sunlight which is more important to me. At the end, I don't care if it's still AMOLED or IPS, they both have pros and cons.
I have a high chance to get M4 because I don't want any size larger than 4.3". However, my One S is still lovely and used only 8 months.

I may wait Sony and see, they are also going to out 4.0" ~ 4.3" 720P LTE with ExmorRS, Qualcomm MSM8960T Dual 1.7GHz with Adreno 320 GPU(I think M4 will use 8960T). Model name: C5302, C5303, C5306 (Code name:HuaShan).

Well I actually lover the cpu choice. Everything runs smooth on this cpu, and with a less heavy skinned Jb (sense 5) this will only improve. Every singel game runs brilliant. I don't think you will notice its downclocked on sense 5 and will bring a lot better battery life I gues.
The display in the one S is great. But when I hold it next to the One X or the SGIII or even the xperia T it really looks dreadfull. The colors and brightness seems fine but compared to these crisp screens it really falls out of the boat.
I'm wondering what the impact will be of a higher res lcd display on the 1.2ghz S4 though.
There are some Sony alternatives. Something I really like about those phones is the waterproof ones. But than again the Sony skin on these phones are just lame. All that grey bled stuff makes it really boring (and ugly), a funeral looks more cheerfull than that.
As I'm looking to replace my One S in march, my preference will still be the Xiaom MI-2.

And I cant edit my post because my post is to short (less than 2 characters) which its obviously not... So umh.. Yes the S4 Pro quad core is a lot more powerful without sacrificing a lot of battery, but comes with a price tag. And I think this phone will be launched as a sub-high-end alternative for the M7 (like the One S was with the one X).

You can trick the Power Saving on in JB, it will limit both cores to 1134mhz max on One S to save battery.
yup, I spoke many times in this broad 720P is a lot better(I was own a Xperia S and that is only a suck TFT mon, not IPS). QHD resolution is really not enough for text reading though. 720P does drains more cpu power over QHD because more pixels to render on screen so it's questionable to make cpu slower while the device actually needs more cpu.
All 1080P devices go with quad-core because they need even more cpu power to render extra pixels. 8960T is just a dual core ver of 1.7G S4 but with a upgraded GPU(Adreno 320).
HTC is really slipping. Three is nothing good about this device. The one thing I hated most about this phone is the terrible memory and HTC made the same mistake again... Better off with the Samsung galaxy s4 or the next nexus device. I strongly recommend skipping any HTC device for a long time.
This is NOT an upgrade to the One S, it's a sad excuse.

Everyone has right on his own opinion, but I completely disagree with you with everything you just said.
I actually LOVE this device! the only thing i would change was the display. It shows quality all around. Incredible sound quality for both headphone and speaker, a slick (aluminum) design, great performance (was the best of its time) and a really really great camera. And although you can't fully unlock it and they released only a partial sourcecode doesn't mean its instantly trash.
Every single thing on the M4 is an upgrade for the One S, besides the CPU. And quite frankly I really don't see the use for a quadcore in a 4.3 inch phone with android 4.2. As the one S proved JB is buttery smooth on this chipset. Yes the IPS display will but its tax on the CPU, but with a lighter (and a lot lighter by the looks of the leaks) sense running on 4.2, I highly doubt you will notice it.
And yes I love the idea of the nexus serie and love the looks of stock android. But I never ever want it as a daily driver. It's just to formal and vannila for my taste. In the Gingerbread and ICS days i would have loved it because it was so much smoother than skinned phones. But JB brought a lot of chance in that, and the phone manufactures really stepped up there game with software development and drivers. Therefor a Nexus phone doesn't have any appeal for me AT ALL.

The specs looks quite ok... But wtf? 1.2Ghz cpu speed? WHY!? Ive downclocked my S to 1.2Ghz a few times to save battery, and the difference is very noticable in speed. The battery I save I lose right away when having to wait extra long for something to finish loading.

Since every other mid-range phone is running S4 1.5G now, I don't think HTC will use 1.2G on their 2013 new phone. Sony's up coming mid-range will use MSM8960T 1.7G dual, I think HTC will just follow Sony.

Hey, sorry to forget mention about Xiaom MI-2. We have many chances to use China smartphone/tablet here in Hong Kong. I've to say it depends on your usage.
They are general powerful on hardware and cheap at price because they cut the cost from software development. You have no chance to get a stock rom close to the HTC/Samsung/Sony level, don't even to think get as many updates as HTC. So, the performance totally depends by custom roms and flash rom is almost a necessary on China stuffs. I see Xiaom MI-2 got a dev broad on XDA now.
If you are going to use it with only some general apps and not a heavy usage user, the stock rom may works fine and China stuffs almost never come with google playstore and map and others google apps, you have to get root access and install them by yourself. Not sure about Xiaom MI-2.
AW: HTC M4(One S upgrade) finally leaked news!
I think apart from the weak cpu clockspeed(hopefully they will change to something like 1.5-1.7ghz), this phone is nice. But I think I am gonna keep my one S for this year and afterwards there will be new phones as well, so no need to buy one. One S is still just fine for everything.

Thanks for your insight. But I think the MI-2 is worth another look. It's roots in rom development (the famous MIUI rom's) which are so succesfull they started building phones there self. I actually love the software and see more future in than in sense or touchwiz UX. They have monthly updates which are based on the miui community and by the looks of the reviews and benchmarks the firmware seems very optimized (all most the speed of the nexus 4, better audio quality than most high end phones, and photo quality is on par with the iphone and sony/samsung devices).
Many people view this phone as another cheap china phone, but I think it deserves a lot more credit than that. There are reports Xiaomi will bring the MI-2 to the US market this year, and is getting a lot of support all round (did i mention Qualcomm is one of the biggest investors?).
I don't want to sounds like this is the best phone on the market or that I'm completely sure I'm going to get one, i just want to raise it out of the budget phone segment.
HTC One S is ok for the average joe but if you want to...
i have an un branded HTC ONE S, which has been good to me in terms of using custom roms/kernels without too much hassle.
rooting on the other hand was bit of a nightmare, but that was due to me not reading all that i could before i tried, which leads me to the pain in the a** S-ON and having to flash boot kernels/recoveries with ADB (which is no longer a problem with FLASH IMAGE GUI supporting our device)
also the16gb rom is a bit low...would like to have the ability to upgrade to 32
i really dont see too much of an upgrade for our device , the HTC One S is ok for the average joe but if you want to root and mess round with custom roms and kernels, choose another device to upgrade to
This is so annoying. Still using 16 GB of internal memory, and now with 13mp camera (useless) so we can only fit 10 pictures.
Also, I guarantee this is gonna be S4 Plus (not Pro) and therefore it will have the Adreno 305 GPU. The old S4 Plus which the One S has, contains an Adreno 225, which is actually a lot faster than the 305.
So take a slower GPU and pair it with a 720p screen (instead of our 540p), take away some CPU performance as well, and what do you get?
And a 13 mp camera, seriously, I thought the "megapixel race" ended ages ago. How many people actually print out billboards from pictures taken on your phone? Just focus on lens quality and aperture, leave the megapixels at 8. Hell, even 5 is more than enough, I never take pictures at more than 2 mp myself.
HTC is digging its own grave.

Lol, bit of an exaggeration there.......
I have had over a 1000 photos (including lots of 1080P and slow motion footage) on my S and still had 5GB left. I don't store any music on my phone so 16GB is more than enough for me and is for many others, nexus 4 16 and 8GB models as well as iphones etc. sell well enough so the ones who want 32GB+ internal and/or a SD slot are in a small minority.
Also, we have no idea yet as to what the camera lens etc. is not to mention software/driver tweaks/optimisation, so how can you judge the camera when the phone specs etc. haven't even been confirmed
Regarding the M7 camera;
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-m7-rumored-carry-43-ultrapixel-camera
So it could be the same for the M4, just the way the camera on the X and S are the same.
HTC obviously has got everything wrong if they expect people to NOT store music on a "beats" branded phone.

yup, both CPU/GPU will be slower than One S if it is real using the Qualcomm S4 Plus MSM8930 Dual 1.2G but I doubt that because it will happen the case on One S(S3) again, a great smartphone with slower cpu and terrible sales result.
The M7/M4 will both likely using the technology similar to Foveon X3 RGB 3CMOS on DSLR. It means 3 x 4.3M CMOS combined together to output a 13M photo, you get perfect color and white balance reproduction this time. However, low light and high ISO might be even worse because three CMOS there to share the aperture now, the photo should be darker and more noises appear.
It is absolutely a killer to Nokia Pureview808 and the upcoming Nokia Lumia 950(WP8 with Pureview808) in summer but might not be on the same boat with original One X/S and Nokia 920 which targeted at low lighting environment. I'll see how M7/M4 to handle low light with this new 3CMOS because low light is more important to me.

If you care about low light that mufh, why don't get a dslr?

Because often when one is in low light conditions and wants to take pictures, they don't usually have their hefty DSLR kit with them. People only carry that stuff around when it's planned. If you go out for some drinks in the evening and want to take some pictures, the One S works wonders, and hence I actually really appreciate its ability to take decent pics in those scenarios without a flash.
Looks like I'll either be skipping an upgrade this year and stick with the One S, or sadly move to a different brand. Unless the M4 turns out to be different.

I imagine the black M7 will be similar to the black m4. M4 looks quite curvy/ergonomic and a bit thick so it looks like it will feel comfortable/nice in the hand.
By the looks of it, the speakers are on the front of the M7 too Also I am glad that they aren't going any bigger than 4.7".
