32gb Micro SD card compatability - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have gone through three 32gb cards now and none seem to be working. I try to swap the contents of my 16gb card to the 32gb card and the data gets corrupted each time. The data on the 16gb card is fine and I can transfer it to my PC drive, thumb drive, and even a different 16gb sd card and view all the files with no problem. But everytime I try to transfer it to any of the 32gb cards the data gets corrupted and the transfer fails. I have formatted each card with the panasonic card format software (ver. 3) and it still doesnt work. I have tried different format options and I have even tried to format it with my EVO and still no go. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

The Xoom's SD card slot doesnt work on stock Android 3.0/3.1. If you rooted to get an OS with an operational card slot, it is possible that the root did not install correctly.

Trying to understand...you are saying that the file transfer has failed from 16gb to32gb when using PC to transfer...not a Xoom issue yet? Have you just put a few files on the 32gb card and checked it in the Xoom? It sounds like you've done everything right...are you sure the cards are good?

I am rooted and have been using the card slot for some time.
I have tried to transfer the files by several methods. PC -> Card, PC -> EVO, PC -> card reader, PC -> Xoom, and vise versa. Nothing worked. I have tried putting just a few files on and it seems to work, but when I try to put all the files (about 9gb's worth) the info starts to become corrupt. I suppose its possible that all three cards are bad, but I have to think the odds on that would have been pretty high. The first card was a class 10, the second and third cards were class 4.

I hope someone with experience with a 32gb card jumps on this...I've never used anything larger than 16gb. It just doesn't make sense-have you tried transfering smaller chunks of data at a time? Anyway, I hope you can resolve this...if you do, please share. Good luck!

It really does sound like faulty cards. Where are you getting them from? It's well known that sd cards bought from eBay or Amazon Marketplace are more than likely fake.
For example, I bought a 16GB card from a guy on eBay and was only able to transfer 2GB of data to it then the card corrupted. I later found out that people are re-badging smaller cards to look like bigger ones. They also spoof the size on the card itself so it reports as a larger card when plugged in but they only take up to their former capacity before corrupting.

All were bought from Ebay so that would make sense. Where do you suggest buying the card? My local chain stores do not carry anything larger than 16gb right now.

Yeah, hopefully you can get your money back for them. I did but it took a little nagging.
I buy mine from ebuyer.com but that's a UK site so if you're elsewhere maybe Amazon (direct from Amazon only tho as the Marketplace is just like eBay for fakes) or maybe Best Buy? Definitely go to a reputable dealer anyway.

I either buy mine locally, or NewEgg ONLY.

Are you sure your computer isn't putting the usb to sleep while it's copying?

MicroSD slot...

I took out my microsd card from my old 8525 and put it in my fuze and it will not read it. I put it back in my 8525 and it reads it fine. I also use an adapter for my pc and windows reads it fine. Just got the phone today about 20 minutes ago. Could the microsd slot be bad? and YES I am putting it in the correct way. The SD cad is a 2GB kingston.
2GB SD cards are picky. I have a 2GB card in my camera that my laptop will only recognize about 50-75% of the time, although I've never had a problem with it in my camera nor with the card reader I have plugged into my other computer. Of course, it could be a defective slot in the phone, too. The only way to tell is to try with another card (preferably a different size).
microSD cards are cheap. I'd suggest getting a 4GB or 8GB card and seeing if the phone accepts that; if so, just use your pc to copy all the data from the old card onto your hard drive and then onto the new card. If not, you've still got a new card as well as evidence that the phone needs to be replaced.

Formatting new SD card?

I have a MT3G rooted with CM 4.0.4 using the one click method. I'm getting a new Transcend 8GB Class 6 card. I believe this card come with an adapter to plug into a regular SD slot. To format do I just use my comp to format the card to FAT32? Then load my saved data back to the sd card and load it back into my phone? Is it that easy?
Welcome to forums,
Yes it works that way
lol, yep as orb says
I have the same card (which i will be shortly throwing in the bin due to its unreliablity) and find its better to use the sd adaptor than one of those crappy usb adaptors for micro sd cards (like the sandisk usb adaptor that doesnt work!!)
Just my opinion, but id recomend buying the best make you can when it comes to micro sdhc cards, my transcend one decided to wipe itself clean the other day during a phone call..... a sure warning that its on its way out....
Lost all my music, photos blah blah..... (didnt back it up either tut tut...)
Flash Format is the best way, imo. I've had corruptions before where my pc and fuze couldn't sse the card, but flash format was able to re-format. The demo works fine, and the app costs about 10 bucks. I've had major problems with my 16 g sandisk, but think I figured out how to keep it healthy. Quick tips: 1 Set all default downloads a nd save paths and whatnot to main memory, including PIE cache. 2 Put any apps you use a lot or especially that run continuously (don't forget services) on main memory. 3 Do not put Finger Keyboard on your card, lol. The instructions tell you not to, but this is not a challengr to do it anyway. Guaranteed corruption. Trust me, I did it cuz I'm an idiot. 4 If you use a disk scanner/repairer, and it finds problems, don't just delete the recovered (and messed up files). Open them with notepad, and see what they are. This will give you an idea of the corruption source.
My notebook is not picking up the sd card with adapter? I have a slot on my notebook, I thought it was bad contact, cleaned it and still nothing? WTF!!
timmymarsh: This is a subjective topic in terms of SD card, I looked and everybody recommended Transcend, its even on a list of recommended cards by TMobile?? I guess I'll find out? Do you have a recommendation?
FarmerTed: Flash format say nothing about being compatible for android os? I don't know if it will work?
why dont you just put the sd card into you phone. mount the sd card via usb and format it from there?
I tried that, but my notebook says theres nothing? I also tried just installing the new card and trying to format it with the phone. I formated the card, but it said the card is damaged and it wont do anything? So either the card is just not getting recognized or it is bad? I'll keep tinkering with, if it doesnt work, I'll send it back to newegg.

Oops, sorry, didn't realize you were on android. All I can suggest is searching for a similar app that runs on android, or maybe looking for undelete programs for your desktop. There's probably something out there that will fix your card.

Memory Card suddenly unmounts while transferring files

Here is the problem:
I recently purchased a 32gb memory card reformatted it then tried to transfer my files to the card but while transferring them the card suddenly un-mounts. After this happens I get a message on my phone that says blank card or unsupported file system. Tried to reformat but it doesnt work. I tried to format it in clockwork recovery no luck, tried with phone connected USB no luck.
Any suggestions?
Bad card? sd slot contacts? What brand of card? Will another device or computer read and/or format it?
I think it may be a bad card. It works until I try to transfer files or write to the card. I'm just going to ask for a refund and buy a better brand of card.

try it in another device/computer preferably, no point in getting another if it is the phone.
Tried it in my wifes mytouch slide and an other phone we have and had the same issue

Then try their card in yours, if it works then k.i.s.s. It's the card that's no good
I had a similar issue with a 16GB card a year or so ago. I put the 16 GB card into a MicroSD to USB adapter (not in a phone), and plugged directly into one of my computer's USB ports, and re-formatted the card. I have had no issues with my card since then.
Hope this helps!

[HEADS UP]SanDisk Ultra 16gb MicroSD Class 10

Just thought I should let you all know about my recent experience with this microSD card.
The Part number is SDSDQY-016G-A11 or SDSDQY-016G-A11A
I bought one from my local Best Buy after finding the item was marked down from $49.99 to $17.99. At first, my initial thought was "Done!" I took it home, opened the package and began transferring everything from my 8gb card to this new 16gb class 10 card.
Now, here is where the problem starts. I do not know if I did not take the necessary prerequisites for this particular card, but, after about an hour of just basic copying of data to the new card, I was struck with a CRC error and the card forced ejected itself from the USB host. I removed the card and put it back in to see what happened and found a corrupted directory from the last thing the card was copying. I couldn't access it or delete it. I couldn't copy anything into the card either. I tried formatting, to which it would complete the operation with a "This card could not be formatted." message at the end. I tried downloading different partitioning software to delete the partition, format the unallocated space and create a new partition to which I was "then" greeted with a variety of "This card is locked/Failed Operation/Space cannot be formatted/Partition could not be created." I gave up. I went back to Best Buy and exchanged the card for a new one. I thought "F*** me right? I got lucky with a bad card."
Nope.
Same thing with the new card, except it happened within 5 minutes of copying anything onto the card. This time around, I decided that I am not going through all of that again and returned the card.
Again, I do not know if I took all the necessary prerequisites before handling the card, but, to my knowledge I do not think there could be anything.
Instead, I jumped over to Hhgregg and found a different model SanDisk 16gb microSD card. I was able to copying over everything over to that card the first time and without a problem.
Also, in case it's asked, the phone did pick up the card initially before anything was copied. After the problem's arose, the phone refused to mount the card at all.
So, if anyone was considering picking up this card, its up to you what you want to do. Just Beware.
I found that the SanDisk USB device/ other SanDisk Adapters was causing errors in the 15 or so misc cards I put through it. Were you using it? or was it in your phone?
I went with the 64GB SDXC and no issues since.
At first I used the supplied adapter which is when the first card gave out. The second card I used a different adapter. A USB based one and it still gave out but much faster. Initially I tried with the card in the phone, but it kept force ejecting itself from the USB host as soon as I started. I thought it was the cable at fault.

I have the same problem i purchased 16gb ultra yesterday and today i m unable to format this card in NTFS system it formatted succesfully in fat32 bt the speed i get white transferring any file is jus 3.5-4 mbps olease help any solution for that??
I have a 7 months old SanDisk ultra 32gb and it's still very good. I have better speeds when copy inside the recovery than inside the rom.
Did you report it to Best Buy?

[Q] Micro SD No Faith

I have tried both a 64gb and a 32gb micro sd card and if I try to save or backup my documents on it sooner or later a few weeks down the road my Note Pro 12.2 reports that I have a corrupt card. I never take it out so that is not the cause. I do not have any apps installed on the card. I am not rooted.
All I am trying to do is keep my music, videos, pictures, and a copy of word and excel files on a micro sd card but I have no trust that my micro sd card is going to work.
I have formatted these cards using my Note Pro. I have formatted these cards using my Windows PC. But several weeks down the road I get the corrupt disk error... please reformat!
Is rooting the answer?
Any help is appreciated.
Sounds like a bad card to me. What brand is it?

This usually happens with low-class or cheap-brand cards.
In general you're best off only using class 10 or above cards by Sandisk or Samsung. Anything else is highly unstable.
I have a San Disk Class 10 64gb but my other card is a PNY Class 6 32gb. I guess I'll look at getting a Samsung? I believe I had read somewhere about this device not liking 64gb cards? Or maybe I read something about it not allowing files to be saved to external storage. Something Samsung was doing.
Anyway thanks for the input. I would like to use a 32gb card as I really don't need 64gb so if my PNY isn't going to work I need to get something that will.
How does this card look?

If that samsung is as fast as it's rated that looks like a good card.
I'm using the Sandisk Extreme Plus 64gb but have only had it for a month and a half. So far no issues but I wonder if it too will be a time bomb.

There's no issue with 64GB cards. There's no issue with 128GB either. Some of the older devices had issues with SDXC UHS-I cards, but that was over a year ago.
There is, however, an issue with Android KitKat no longer allowing non-stock apps to write to the SD card. That's Google's doing. It has nothing to do with corrupt cards.
Samsung and Sandisk cards are both excellent. Just make sure they're class 10 or higher.

What is the best method to copy delete movies to/from my micro SD card? Should I unmount it and remove it or should I power off my tablet and remove it. Or will it be better just to copy them from a USB stick to the card while the card is still in the tablet? I'm hoping to keep 10-15 movies on my card and swap them off to put more on probably every 6 weeks and I want to know which way is the best way not to harm my card.

Unmount the SD card through Settings --> General --> Storage --> Unmount SD Card.
Or connect the tablet via USBcable to the PC and copy it onto the SDcard that way. (It loads as a network device in explorer)
I've got 11 films, two shows and a handful of concerts on my MicroSD and swap regularly, I usually use one of these two methods.
For me, I use a MacBook Pro which for some reason does not allow me USB 3.0 connectivity to the tablet (driver issue I'm sure but try as I might I have never gotten it to work). I therefore use a USB 2.0 cable and Kies to copy files to the tablet that way. I'm able to pick the external card as a destination and transfer at USB 2.0 speed.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Hopefully with the new card coming Wednesday my problem will be solved.
I have and use a 64GB SanDisk Micro SD Card on my P900 and can open, copy, move files from and to the sdcard using samsung's stock file manager (My Files) without any problems.
