[Q] MIUI problems - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Because I wanted something new and fresh, I installed MIUI. But I now have some (major) problems.
1. First of all, I can't download anything. I logged in with my Google account and I am connected to Wi-Fi (I don't use 3g). When I try to install an app from the market, it is stuck on 'Starting download...' forever. There is no downloading bar in the notification bar. I searched a little on the internet, and I was told that I needed to go to the 'Downloads' app, press menu, and then 'Download using Mobile network'. It seems odd to me, because I want to download via Wi-Fi. Anyway, whatever setting I use in that download app, it doesn't work.
Browsing works fine by the way.
2. Second, what is this strange green app with the up-arrow on the homescreen? It isn't translated into english (I'm using the latest language pack). It looks a lot like the download app, but that app is on the homescreen to the right, and it is a blue app with an arrow pointing down. I can't delete this green app, because it is a system app. How can I get rid of it, or at least translate it?
Thanks in advance.

Can you post a screenshot of the app you're talking about? (Menu+Volume Down will take a screenshot)
About the Market, that happens to me sometimes, on various roms. Try this: Force Stop the Market and Talk. Then open Talk and make sure you're connected, then open Market and try downloading again.

That green app is the MiUi updater. It allows you to get OTA updates for MiUi. However, this only works if your running the original Chinese version. That app is usually removed in the English pack but in the latest MiUi 1.6.10 its required because the Theme Manager has some dependencies on it.

[APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch

Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
The source code for the app is available at https://bitbucket.org/ne0fhyk/keyboard-manager/overview
Version 2.2:
- Bug fix: certain apps (MLB, Youtube, ...) misbehave while KM is running. This is caused by a 'transition screen', introduced in prior versions to prevent keyboard input freezes on orientation switch for older devices.
I added the option to MANUALLY DISABLE/ENABLE the 'transition screen'. Testing on Galaxy nexuses shows that affected apps stop misbehaving.
- Bug fix: fix KM's requests for root access outside of orientation switches.
Version 2.1:
Update should reduce the frequency of force closes for the swiftkey 3 keyboard.
Unfortunately, it's not possible at this point to eliminate all force closes while using swiftkey 3. The problem primarily lies with swiftkey 3, as many other keyboards (Thumb keyboard, hacker keyboard, swype,..) perform fine under Keyboard Manager.
If you think you can help, feel free to take a look at the code, and submit patches.
Version 2.0:
This version can he found on the android market by searching for Keyboard Manager.
I have open sourced the application source code to allow anyone to continue developing and improving the app.
The code can be found @ https://bitbucket.org/ne0fhyk/keyboard-manager/overview
Version 1.4:
The updated version can be found on the android market app by searching for 'Keyboard Manager'.
- Fix installation bugs issue cause by /etc/fstab read/write permissions on certain android devices.
INSTALLATION ISSUES FIX:
MOTOROLA ATRIX USERS, please follow the steps below if you cannot start the app after installing it.
If you are unable to launch the app after installation, please follow these steps:
- Look in your sdcard folder for the directory /Android/data/com.ne0fhykLabs.android.utility.kmLauncher/files/
- There should be an apk file there, Keyboardmanager.x.y.apk, where x,y stands for the version number
- Copy that file to /system/app/, and change the permissions to rw-r--r-- (Read/write for owner, read for group, and read for other)
- Reboot your device, and try running the app again.
If the problem still persists, please contact me through xda, or at [email protected]

Version 1.3:
The updated version can be found on the android market app by searching for 'Keyboard Manager'.
This update contains fixes to installation bugs, as well as better error reporting.
Version 1.2:
I uploaded an updated version of the app to the android market.
It can be found here( Mod edit: No Market links for paid apps) or on the 'android market' app by searching for 'Keyboard Manager'.
This update should fix the installation issue, and make it easier to push future updates to users.
Again feedbacks are welcome, and greatly appreciated.
Version 1.1:
Requirement:
- rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate with Cognition v2.3b8 rom)
Installation:
a- Download, and install the apk file KMLauncher.1.1.apk
b- If KMLauncher.1.1.apk failed to install on your device, download KeyboardManager.1.1.apk manually to your sdcard, and follow the instructions for v1.0
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- added KeyboardManager.1.1.apk for cases where KMLauncher.1.1.apk failed to install
- added/implemented 'start on boot' option
- notification disabled by default. added option to enable it
- ease up installation method
- removed freeze on orientation switch
Bugs:
- Depending on the foreground app, there might be a slight lag in the keyboard switch.
- KMLauncher.1.1.apk has trouble installing on certain devices. If this happens, please report device information, and follow instructions for KeyboardManager.1.1.apk. I am working on a fix for KMLauncher.1.1.apk
Version 1.0:
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
Thanks!
- ne0fhyk
Sweet, thanks for the update.
need option to disable notfication icon
only have two things wrong
1. notification that the app is running stays in notification bar
2. when I switch it doesn't freeze but it closes the keyboard and have to reclick to open the keyboard back up
other than that works great
Sent from my Samsung Fascinate using XDA App
The notification icon is intended to remind the user that the service is running. I will add an option to disable it.
Does it close the keyboard everytime?

wow.. these looks really promising! Will it work on any rom, or is it specific to certain types?
is this the same version that was posted in the middle of some thread a couple months ago?
want to know if I need to update or not.
Works perfectly for me on droid x

It is an updated version.
Ditto on getting rid of the notification icon.
For me it isn't working. When configured it, and every time I switch between orientations, I get this message
"Exception caught: java.lang.SecurityException: Using null token requires permission android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS"
I thought it was a little strange, but when I installed it it said it didn't require any permissions. That didn't seem right to me...

Did you follow the instructions to install. Based on your description, it seems you install it like a regular app.
After you install restart (reboot) your phone. App is awesome dude, few glitches still on the incredible, but much better then the last version!
Good app!!
A sugestion for an extended version: choose keyboard based on the app you are usin (swipe for handcent and stock for search for example). That would turn this app into something unique!
Thanks!
Enable service on boot is grayed out for some reason and the notification persists even after unchecking the box. 2.2 droid x
BUT! This app is awesome. Been waiting for something like this. Thanks so much

It's already pretty unique. ;-)
The "enable on boot" option is grayed out on my Droid X.
Worked the first time when I tested it in search, but all subsequent attempts failed when I went into landscape. Also, the notification icon at the top is still showing even though I had it disabled. That boot option is grayed out for me too (I don't know if that's a bug). EVO
It works as far as switching from portrait to keyboard, but when I switch from Portrait (Swype) to landscape (multi) in Handcent, I cannot see what I'm typing in landscape until I rotate back to portrait. The text entry box is there and the keyboard behaves normally, but nothing shows up in the box I'm typing into until I rotate. This happens whether or not I type anything in portrait prior to rotating. I have a Droid X.
Glad to see this being developed though!

[Q] Market Keeps Updating!!!

I have a custom Android Market that is really nice looking. I want to keep this one, but the Market app keeps auto updating it everytime I open the app...
I've already tried the terminal "pm disable com.android.vender.updater" thing.
I've already tried to "freeze" the Market Updater app.
I've already tried to "remove/uninstall" the Market Updater app.
I've tried to clear (reg/Dalvik) cache via recovery.
Is there no way to stop the updates? What can be done??? Help!
The theme market your using most(probably) not developed/modded(maybe not completed), most themed markets prevents itself from being updated.
Edit: Are you using a ROM? If so, then which?

I'm using Princely's Blue, black, white 2.7.5 rom... The Market version included with the ROM is 3.0.x and it keeps trying to goto 3.1.3.
I love the transparent blue, and not the ugly green/grey/black market... : /

Hm, cause I use BBW as my daily ROM, and I always have blue market, I know when the theme version isn't very modded it allows market to update itself, but I'm sure it's not the market this time because I use it too. Did you follow full install steps, that is main reason some system apps don't install? Your second option is, pull the Vending.apk from the V.2.7.5 zip and put it on your SD Card, Go to settings the applications, go to market, then click uninstall updates, if you get the themed market then good, but if it uninstalls the whole market app and you don't have market anymore, go to es file explorer or astro explorer(any file explorer than can ), then install from your SD Card. You should be ok from those steps, but if it fails by some strange reason, then reflash ROM full steps.
Edit: Before doing those steps let it update itself first, also, it's trying to update to 3.1.5 now.....

I did the full install steps but originally installed RBT first... then the BBW over the Red... Could this cause it? Also, I've already uninstalled updates, and it just keeps reverting to the regular market right after I accept the TOS...
I think I'm gonna have to reflash the full ROM again...
{[EDIT]}
The other issue I have is that the battery icon in the status bar keeps chainging between a percentage and a battery icon... Another over install issue?
Try reflashing them full steps, if the steps above don't work for you. The battery and percent is my "fault", it turns to a buttery icon at 30, 50, 70, and 90 percent. Not sure which looks better though, the light blue battery looks pretty nice, it matches, but the battery icon is a bit more helpful being as the number percent.

Reflashed the phone with the BBW again... (no over installing this time). As soon as the phone booted I uninstalled the Market Updater and it still updated as soon as I pressed "Agree" on launch... WTF?!
Other then the fighting market place and the every switching battery icon, I love the ROM... : ) Faster then my Epic 4G and Droid Charge by a land slide.
{[EDIT]}
I uninstalled the update, and the blue market came back (again)... But it keeps making my accept the TOS... and then boom! Updated...
OK, when you have the blue market don't except TOS yet, go to titanium backup, backup the blue market, then accept TOS, If it updates then let it update, after it updates then go to titanium backup and restore the blue market.
I'll try to get a up to date market in V2.8.
I downgraded to the 2.x version of the market (before any fancy crap, definitely before videos and books)... guess what? It's fast and responsive.
Definitely going to think hard about going to the latest version.

No go... Removed updates. Made a back up. Then started the app and accepted TOS. Let it update. Then tried to restore.
Android won't restore over the new version... Keeps saying "Application not Installed". Tried to delete just the app, but when I restored the TOS was needed again... Was a good idea tho.
{[EDIT]}
Just tried something else... I directly replaced the com.android.vender(-1).apk apps over the whole rom... Seems to work for now... Wish me luck...
{[EDIT 2]}
Stayed for about 10-20 mins and then was replaced... What is causing this?
Theoretically you COULD delete the app, but that seems a little risky...something you should only try after a full backup (and something I would only try with a lot of Red Bull early in the morning)...
Or theme the latest market apk too. If it is recompiled, and assigned with a different key than the One Google uses, it might stick. But then, you may be voiding your ability to use Marketplace too...

[Q] Android Market, Not Google Play Shop

I dislike the name Play Shop and want to have Market and the Market icon back on my Homescreen. I have uninstalled Play Shop, but when I go to the Market, before long Market has updated itself to the new name and icon.
Is it possible to somehow change the name of Play Shop to Market and change the icon? Alternatively is it possible to stop Market updating itself?
My phone is a rooted Galaxy Ace.
TIA.
Decompile it, go to string.XML, change the name. It will be at first few lines normally.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
Using tb you can freeze the market updater. Change the icon by extracting the apk on your computer and swap the images over. You could even use your launcher to change the icon.
Thanks for the tip, I also don't like the icon (For now I removed from the first screen )
I don't see what the big deal is, but if you're really that desperate to return to the past, here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543427
icon/name vs performance,and you choose icon/name,wow

rashid. fairus I didn't perceive any improvement in performance; it probably exists only in your perception. Even if I had that wouldn't make any difference. When you are my age you might not be keen on change either lol.
Thanks to everyone else.
I had it configured in 'multicon' app and after the update it stayed with same icon (no names are shown with this app)

Touchwiz Phone app p6210

Ok so I dont know if this is common knowledge but on the stock launcher and go launcher there seems to be no way to access the " Phone" application . However when I installed Adw EX launcher it magically appeared allowing me to dial there. However when i go into the app drawer there is no sign of a " Phone " app. Is there any way i can get the apk to be accessible in the app drawer ( of any of the launchers )
screenshot of *magically appeared* please..
I didnt think their was a phone anywhere, maybe SIP / Internet calling.
try "any cut" app, select cusom acivity, should show a long list of available acions/intents/apps which can be launched, etc.
what would you with a dialer anyway?
If you want VOIP try GrooveIP, one of the best.
Here are the screenshots of my findings. I used groveip for a good while but now I use Talkatone .. Essentially the same but with more features. When I click call , the call goes through Talkatone but u like the interface of this dialer better
Not sure what model your usimg but its always been there. Just grab it from the app drawer.
Sent from my GT-P6200 using xda premium
probably same as 6200 but obviously only connects through VOIP/SIP.
are you rooted? if so, try browsing to /system/app and find and install phone.apk, (must already be installed, but re-installing might cause it to show up in app drawer)and contacts.apk as well.
Stock Launcher may very well have the .apks hidden...or...maybe you ned to have a VOIP/SIP/internet calling account signed in or enabled in settings first?

[Q] Google Play Services

When I checked my Galaxy's file manager to uninstall an app, I suddenly saw "Google Play Services" installed. a 3.15 mb app. What is this for? I read on the market it is automatically installed? But, I didn't see any updates on my notification bar to install this, it just popped on my file manager.. I uninstalled it, but it installed again without any notification for it to be installed... please see attachment to see what im talking about guys.. Thankz!
I think that the 3.15MB file is the latest version of Google Play. It NEVER alerts you when it is downloading, updating, or complete. So just to let you know, it is likely to update again. If you are in GPlay at the time, it will force close with no warning.
That is not a defect in the app, but that is simply how it behaves. I flash many roms weekly, and sometimes daily, and this behavior is common among ALL fresh installs of any rom.

I received this envelope icon on my notification bar and it isn't my gmail, when i scrolled down my status bar i saw the envelope and had some Chinese words next to it. is this an ad or spam? how would i solve this annoyance? I installed some apps yesterday and deleted them hoping this envelope notification would go away. This envelope only appears when i switch on my wifi. I also sometimes get this folder titled "ppy_cross" and sometimes some random numbered folder. Even if i delete these 2 folders, sometimes it woud return when my wifi is on.. I also read that Go launcher apps such as themes and keyboard skins have airpush ads, could this be true because i do have Go Launcher, and I had that chinese envelope thing on my notification bar, could this have any relation?
Hmm...can't really tell with the Go Launcher issue. I never had this problem, but I do get the Airpush ads with Go launcher and its products installed. Did you try a XDA or Google search for ppy_cross? That might yield the best results, if any.
Could also be spam that filtered through from somewhere
Google play services is some app to better unify and use Google plus and +1s I believe. Something to that extent.
I got it too, useless for me but WHATEVS

Just a quick note. Has anyone looked at what this google play services actually has access to.. basically it can take almost total control of your phone..
I froze it with titanium backup and nothing happened.
