[Guide] [Recovery] [Heimdall] Clockwork Mod 3.1.0.1 Purple Heimdall - Epic 4G Android Development

Heimdall CWM 3.1 guide
On Gingerbread, only flash Clockwork and not the Kernel.
Hi. I'm here to post a guide to installing ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 on your Epic with Heimdall. I'm doing this because me and some other people had our phones bricked by the 3.0.2.5 one click root and this worked for me.
Step 1: Download and extract heimdall from here: http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Step 2: Boot your phone into download mode by holding the 1 key and pressing power after either a battery pull or simply turning your phone off and connect it to your USB Port
If You are running Mac or Linux, skip Steps 3-5. Your drivers install automatically.
Step 3: Open Zadig.exe from /drivers in the extracted folder
Step 4: Go to options> list all devices.
Step 5: Select to Install the Samsung Android USB Composite Driver from the list.
Note: It may say it has an unknown publisher (or something similar), ignore it. I am 100% sure that it's safe.
Step 6: Download CWM from http://drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTools/cwm3.1.0.1.purple.zip
Step 7: Download Drockstar kernel from http://drockstar.devphone.org/EpicKernel/DRockstar.Clean.Kernel.EC05.v1.05.zip
Step 8: Put the zimage from /kernel in the CWM Zip in the recovery slot
Step 9: Put the zImage from /kernel in the Drockstar Clean Kernel Zip in the Kernel slot.
Step 10: Press start and it should work.
It's quick and easy. Should only take about 5 minutes from start to finish.
I am not responsible for bricked phones or Michelle Bachann, or Sarah Palin or the Iraq War or the deficit, but I am responsible for cute puppies and rainbows and butterflies.

Nice dude this is good

Thanks for the support, bro.

Purple looks so much better than the old orange/green. Credit goes to Drockstar. All I did was make a guide for Heimdall.

Well, I can confirm this will actually work... I was planning on releasing an odin tar version of the cwm bml8 kernel, for situations like that.
To clarify the issue, sometimes when bml8 is flashed with cwm, somehow that partition gets borked, and once you try to 3 finger into it, the phone won't boot normally at all.
The quickest fix to this, is using heimdall with the phone in download mode, as described in the original post of this thread. You can just flash the cwm 3.1.0.1 zImage to recovery, as described to fix it quickly, without the need to flash entire stock tar, and erasing all your data.
I will make odin tar flashes for both the cwm 3.1.0.1, and the Clean Kernel, that can be flashed with odin, for those that don't have heimdall installed yet.
Also note, that I had a lot of bml8 flash failures in testing, when the kernel was rather large, especially when pushing the limits of what the kernel could handle. This has been the main reason for me slimming down the zImage sizes for both cwm, and the Clean Kernel. Since reducing the cwm and Clean Kernel zImage file sizes, botched flashes have been very rare.
Plus, when gingerbread official is released, the *only* way to root it, will be to flash a rooted kernel with odin or heimdall, since the exploits used by one click root scripts have all been patched. As of official gingerbread for the epic, expect no one click root scripts to work with it... something I've posted already in the general section, but I doubt very many people have read.

Thank you for the warning. Sorry if I bricked your phone.
I couldn't flash CWM without the kernel on EC05.

Can someone give a simple but informative description of the difference between Heimdall CWM and OCR CWM , just to help educate some of us who are still fairly new to Rooting & ROMing ( I hope I'm not the only person who would be interested ) THX !

There is no difference. They are the same thing. This is jist another way of flashing recovery to the phone. Thats all. Its still the same cwm

Am I right in saying skip the kernel flash if you are running a non-stock (Twilight for example) kernel?

It is, but it's also available for Windows and Linux/Unix/*Nix/GNU. Also, I had better luck with Heimdall than OneClickRoot, as OneClickRoot bricked my phone, but OneClick may be better for you.

It might create confusion. like when we had 2.5 for rfs and 3.0.0.5 for ext4

Oh well
If I can live with orange I can live with purple
Its still better than stock blue
I like blue but its just super ugly on stock recovery

Quick guide for flashing Gingerbread KF1 and rooting

I am not responsible for brick phones. This method worked for me. If there is any confusion or something is not clear, ASK!
I see Kaik541 has a thread in Dev section for an ODIN version of KF1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14782572&postcount=1
This is for those who want to flash and root from using the tar files.
I personally always remove my external memory and sim card before using odin. It is not needed as people will obviously post and neither is doing master clear. I do these steps just to make sure I eliminate any possible issues that can occur during flashing.
1) Download Firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm
2) Flash back to stock JF6 w/ odin one-click and did a master clear.
3) Flash Gingerbread KF1 using Odin (see image attached)
4) Flash fugu kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1010141 (I attached the zImage-root.tar to post if link does not work)
In the first post look for and select the download link in step 2: (credit to nikademus)
How to use:
1: Flash the stock rom
2: Download the image for Heimdall or for Odin
3: Flash it with either Odin or Heimdall
4: Boot once, it will install root and crash/shutdown (it is preferred to let the phone connected to usb so it does not loop boot)
5: Reflash the original kernel
5) Flash stock kernel (attached kernelKF1.7z) credit to lownox for helping me on that
6) Settings>Applications> enable Unknown Sources (AT&T finally got something right)
7) Install busybox from market
8) ENJOY!
thanks for the write up man
getting 404 on image link...
your links for steps 3, 4, and 5 don't work.

I want to do that but I haven't learn how to do anything beyond deodexed. I also still haven't had time to learn how to add "extras" like extended power menu or additional lock screens.
If someone wants to PM the instructions or a link to do so, I'll be happy to do and have it ready tomorrow.
Do we really need another Odin guide? Write one on heimdall. It's open source and actually maintained. It also has a lower brick rate.

Honestly I have never used Heimdall and have never had an issue with ODIN. With that said I also have no objection if anyone wants to write up the parts for Heimdall here or by PMing me, I'll add to it the first post. I am not about to reflash again just to learn a new process when the old one has not given me a single issue.
made a deodex version, just dont know what to do with it
its not ready for flash or anything and its just deodexed using illdroid.
Doesn't matter anyways until we get CWM working...

There's really nothing new to learn. It looks and loads almost exactly like Odin. Not sure what processes are different when you push the start button though. I'm not pushing heimdall, just conveying what i've seen with it. I used once to load the last Andro3.

Installs ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM/CWR)
The UV kernel gives you more freedom for overclock settings.
NOTES
This is for FROYO ONLY versions 2.2.x only, NOT 2.3.x
Comes in 2 flavors, UV which is undervolted, and regular.
Please read drhonk's original thread for features and usage.

You will not lose your data with just flashing a kernel, but once you flash a new ROM, you will. Make sure you do a back up of your current ROM before you mess with anything.

Sorry for the noob questions, I'm used to a vibrant so this is all different to me. Just to be clear about what this does....basically it just roots the phone and adds cwm, but does not change anything about the phone other than that or wipe settings/ data?
I'm using a mac that I have parallels with xp on. Would this work that way? I had trouble trying to root before on parallels with superoneclick...the file just wouldn't run. Also, i'm assuming the phone needs to be in download mode for this to work?
Thanks.
You will not lose data. Yes, it gives you root and cwm. Yes, you have to be in download mode.
Are you dual booting or running vmware?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
i'm not exactly sure, i'm running parallels within osx so I think that would qualify as a virtual machine...I don't know what you mean by dual booting
Well, i've tried it in parallels and no luck. Odin opens fine and loads up the tar file. However it never recognizes the phone. I have the correct samsung drivers installed and windows recognizes that the phone is plugged in, it just doesn't make it into odin. It seems that there is just no way for me to root this phone with a mac, and unfortunately i don't know anybody with a pc. Oh how I wish somebody could make an app for the market that would root just like the vibrant...... it was sooo easy with that phone.....oh well
Well this isn't a vibrant, so I will end that argument there.
Are you in download mode when connecting to Odin?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Why not give heimdall a try. You can flash bali through odin and you'll get your phone rooted and get cwm installed.

yes, I am in download mode, it just doesn't show up. I've heard that odin can be picky about usb issues, so perhaps there are too many factors at play between the mac and windows interface for it.....I don't know. And, I'm definitely not trying to start a vibrant vs 4g argument, i understand that they are very different. I'm just frustrated that i'm having such a hard time rooting this phone.
I've never tried heimdall, is it a vm as well....similar to parallells?
Thanks for taking time to read this and give advice btw....it really is appreciated regardless of whether I get this working or not.
Heimdall is a flashing program for windows/mac/linux. The author of it reverse engineered Odin's file transfer protocol and made that program available for free.

honestly, I think it's easier to just grab one of DrHonk's rooted kernels from the dev section and flash that via ODIN, and it also gets you CWM.
Just make sure you don't try to flash a gingerbread (2.3.x) kernel over a froyo (2.2.x) rom and vice versa
Can i do this running 2.2.1? Like updating from Froyo to this firmware, or do I have to update to something else first?
Dr Honk also has froyo kernels posted. Also you could try any of the great roms here as most of them are rooted. Just be sure to read the Noobs guide to flashing very carefully. In the Android developement section RaverX3X has posted the latest stock kernel + root + deodexed + debloat. Your best bet if you want stock.
The only problem I'm having with this root is I can't get Wi-Fi to work.

If you just want root, you can use the latest SuperOneClick. If you want root/CWM/voodoo lagfix you can:
- Install drhonk's kj1 kernel via ODIN
- Install bhundven's KJ6 Heimdall One-Click
I suggest the latter as it's based on the KJ6 kernel & only needs Java to install.

The upshot to the CWM in bhundven's kernel is that it's CWM 5 which doesn't have the problem with mounting /system on GB ROMs. However, you can't restore your previous CWM backups with it, either.
Didnt work for me, just sticks on the fugomod screen.

[HEIMDALL][FIRMWARE][ROM][KERNEL] UCKE3; UCLB3 ROOTED; FROYO; ENTROPY's; JT's

Hello Heimdall Lovers.
Here is a good comment. LINK
You have no idea what Heimdall is?
Here is a good explanation: Heimdall
Here is the pioneer: Benjamin Dobell
How do you use Heimdall? Here are two links:
Linkie #1
Linkie #2
Still don't know? Try this: GOOGLE
Type in: how to use heimdall or how to install heimdall drivers.
What is a Heimdall-1-click? Here is the guy responsible for it: Adam Outler.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, I have put together a few Heimdall-1-click packages that I will share with you.
FIRMWARE UCKE3
Yup..this is the FROYO Firmware package based on gtg465x
It is re-packed in a Heimdall-1-click:
LINK TO FIRMWARE - - - - - FIRMWARE LINK #2
What else would one need besides the wonderful UCKE3 firmware?
Why, the froyo community kernel that will root it and gives you cwm recovery of course!
FROYO COMMUNITY KERNEL. - - - - - FROYO LINK #2
Well? What the heck is this good for?
I'm glad you asked.
1. If you wanted to return a semi-borked device and you wanted to set it back to official firmware.
2. Some people are still in love with stock froyo and have no idea how to use Odin.
3. Some people are stuck on using the old modded 3e recovery method.
4. Some people just wanted to use SuperOneClick to root a phone.
5. Some people may want to run lost1's unlock code to get the unlock code that only works on FROYO.
6. You're bored and have nothing better to do with your time.
How do you use this stuff?
1. If you are on a ROM with a recovery, boot into cwm and do a factory reset/data wipe. Go to mount menu: format system, data and cache.
2. Turn off the phone.
3. Run the Heimdall-1-click on your computer.
4. Put the phone into download mode.
5. Install the drivers for heimdall if you have not done it yet.
6. Flash the ROM.
7. If it is done and did not reboot but you see the recovery screen, perform a factory reset and data wipe and reboot into FROYO land.
8. If you wanted to have a red recovery, instead of superoneclick, modded 3e or what other method, shut your phone off. Put it back in download mode. Flash the community kernel. It will auto conversion to voodoo file system, EXT4 and root the UCKE3 and gives you a red recovery to flash or your or whatever you want. Neat huh?
Helpful hints:
Can't get heimdall to work? Try a different PC, Laptop, different USB port or a different data cord.

[HEIMDALL] UCLB3 STOCK ROOTED DEBLOATED and ENTROPY's 4.4.2012 KERNEL
What the heck! Isn't this redundant?
Yup..sure is!
I know that jscott30 has already posted a method for rooting the UCLB3. However, it is Odin. Ewww...
Here is a Heimdall-1-click method:
1. Install UCLB3 FIRMWARE from my UCLB3 Thread:
2. Put your phone into download mode.
3. Flash Entropy's 4.4.2012 kernel - - - -- - Mirror #2
This will automatically convert your factory rfs files system into EXT4 -voodoo file system. You will here a lady-like robotic voice. Takes 5 minutes. Then it will reboot into the ROM.
4. Boot into CWM.
5. Flash this package: ROOT THE UCLB3 - also at bottom of page.
This cwm-flashable package will install busybox, su and Superuser.apk. It will then delete ATT's crap. (See bottom of page). Then it will install Google Talk with video support. Neat, huh?
5. Factory reset and data wipe just to be sure.
6. Reboot. Done.
7. FYI - Since many other ATT Galaxy devices may contain the similar bloats, I would think that flashing this script will root (busybox, su and superuser.apk) other devices as well - after you are able to get cwm by flashing a kernel.
However, if you are not a tinkerer, and just wanted it done for you.
Here is another package:
THIS IS FLASHED IN DOWNLOAD MODE: It's a HEIMDALL-1-CLICK
UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL
How to use: Just put your phone into download mode.
Flash the Heimdall-1-click package. Done.
Factory reset to clear any old data if needed.
Enjoy the rooted package.
I actually ran this odexed rooted version for several days. It is pretty good. It is rock stable.
What's the catch? Well, you need to unzip the vold.zip file at the bottom attachment and paste it into /system/etc in order to access the external microSD card. Check the Vagabond or the Deodexed UCLB3 thread if you don't understand.
Important: Don't use my ROOT package if you wanted the ATT bloats to stay!
If you know how to change edify to suit your taste, you are welcome to do so.

[HEIMDALL] jt1134 ICS KERNEL
You like ICS?
You want to try CM9?
You have no clue?
Well, I'm not sure either. I haven't tried it yet.
I hear that are are some kinks that needed to be worked out yet.
Here is jt1134's kernel
It is packaged in, you guessed it, a Heimdall-1-click.
jt1134 KERNEL - - - - KERNEL LINK #2
How to use:
1. On any ROM...however, it's best if you have just heimdalled the UCLB3, UCKJ4 or if you have Odined any of the later GB leaks.
2. Put your phone in download mode.
3. Do you need root? NO!
4. Do you need 3e? NO!
5. Just flash the Heimdall-1-click. You then have jt's kernel, packed into the kernel (bml7) and recovery (bml8) and you now pwnt cmw 5.xxx.
6. Boot into recovery. It's gonna be a different blue.
7. Follow directions on how to flash ICS/CM9
Credits:
1. jt1134 for his pioneer work on the kernel that gave us a taste of CM9.
2. Adam Outler for the Heimdall-1-click.
notes: I did prepare a package with the bootloaders and the kernel, but with all the warnings about bootloaders, I've decided that it is best if you seek out a way to bork your own phone instead of me making it too easy for you to bork your device and whine about it later.

Heimdall really is a good alternative to Odin. Not sure why some people act allergic to having to install that libusb driver. Now we have plenty of options for folks who prefer one tool over the other, or like in my case, use both.
Again, great work!

Hello, what all this then?
Nice job as always Qkster. Any thought to adding a link to Entropy's cm9 under that post since there are two versions of it? Just a thought.

Yup. Will add that. I had assumed that one only needed to be on cwm 5.xxx ICS kernel as a starting point and the ROM will flash its own kernel. But I'll add that option as well.

Hey, ppal.
I checked Entropy's CM9 thread and download the CM9 build.
The flashing techniques for CM9 only require cwm recovery. There isn't a preloaded kernel like jt's build.
Entropy's intructions were to Flashed twice from a red recovery.
The ROM structure also appears different. There's a boot.img but there isn't a kernel per se.
If there was a kernel like zImage, I can pack it but there isn't one that I can work with from what I know.
I think from any ROM, flashing jt's kernel in DL mode and getting CMW 5.xxx will let you flash Entropy's CM9 also.
As an aside, has anyone used any of these packages? Do they work? Issues? Thanks

Start there
ok read the first one and understood it pretty good , the 2nd link had alot of stuff in it that was a little confusing. this **** is way over my head. like i said i tried superone click on this stock gingerbread rom and it wouldnt get past step 7 so i guess i got alot more reading to do so i dont brick this thing.
Simplicity at it's best
The Infuse 4g is one of the simplest phone's to learn on in my book as far as rooting and changing rom's lot's of great rom's out there , If you really won't to get it done check out the Android Development section here on XDA for rooting , or How too it's pretty simple , you can even flash rooted rom's via Odin to save time in rooting it yourself , pretty easy , be glad to help ya out if ya need a few pointer's here and there , lot's of great people here on XDA that helped me out of the hard spot's , but good luck bro
thank you so much, i am gonna give it a shot this weekend. one question though i put a app backup on my phone so i wouldnt lose my cerberus app. after i do a wipe will i be able to get my app back. i know that sounds stupid but just curious.

You can read the ISET page it may be overwhelming but there is lots of information, and knowledge is good....start with the newbie info so you understand the lingo and info being provided...there are some many great ROM's in our threads.
I would not take the journey on putting ICS/CM9/AOKP till you get you feet settled in to knowing how to flash...start with some the great Gingerbread ROM's, we have custom and very custom ROM's, we have the stock look but still keeping the custom style...
Your choice and what you decide there is plenty of help in these threads, but don't be afraid to ask, but then ensure you have done some research and homework on your own...read, read and re read....
And if ya just cant figure it out, you can pm me...or post in my ISET thread ok,

There are now a easiest way to root your phone which is odin a pre rooted room i find the odin ulb3+root+busybox+cwm to be this best. Only one odin and your done. Just wait for the robot lady to finish

Correction...the easiest way to root your phone is using qksters heimdal package of entropys latest kernel...deletes nothing on the phone only replaces the kernel with a rooted one
Download it (look in ISET page)
Run program
Put phone in download mode
Press flash
Let it do its thing, your phone will reboot and you will be rooted with cwm recovery (used for flashing roms)
*download mode required for both Odin and heimdal*
How to get into download mode?
1) pull battery
2) place battery back in
3) press and hold volume button simultaneously-don't let go and don't touch power button
4) while holding volume keys plug your phone into PC with USB cord
5) you should now be in download mode
You should see either a yellow triangle that says downloading or an option to go to download mode or reboot
Also Odin requires drivers from kies heimdal does not...it uses its own drivers which it will install for you...

I think it really depends on the computer...out of the three in my house 1 works with Odin (windows vista)...the other one works with heimdal (xp) and the other works with both...(xp/Ubuntu, xp both Ubuntu heimdal only for obvious reasons...)
Basically the hard part about both is drivers...which ever is easiest for you to get drivers is what will be easiest for you....once drivers are installed its pretty much a click of a button...well a couple buttons for odin

lol i see what you did there. couple more clicks beats putting your phone twice into download mode , 1 . flash rom and then 2. flash kernel ( to get cmw )
odin packs all that into 1 package ( well the newest one does ) when i had my infuse i flash roms each week so time is really important to me, me personally find odin 1 package to be very time consuming

Sorry if it sounds like I'm arguing....
But if he's just trying to root then he only needs to flash kernel...nothing else...
However if he's bricked then sure Odin will be easier as its all in one...
Again I'm not trying to argue...well I guess technically I am lol, but I'm not trying to lol...how bout we leave it at this...whatever works best for you works best for you, and as long as it gets the job done who cares how you got it done

Odin vs. Heimdall one click will always be a matter of preference. In my case, I prefer the Heimdall command line because it gives me more control. I used it when I made the rooted Odin packages. As for which is easier, qkster's sweet Heimdall one click packages or the rooted Odin packs - they're both just about as easy as it gets, because we've already done most of the work for you.

It involves a little more than just flashing a kernel to root UCLB3, but I know what you mean. See the more involved method at this link for how to do it.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24935969
The Heimdall one click packages, Odin packages, and dman's earlier CWM package just save people the work required to root UCLB3.
But you're right, they aren't "how" to root UCLB3. It's just already done for you.

Bigjoe, looks like the OP was wanting advice on how to get UCLB3 rooted and ready to flash roms (CWM recovery, etc.). So far, other than the back and forth about who prefers one method over the other, it seems that this thread is on track to answer those questions. The good thing about the Infuse forum lately is that there are many ways to do things. To the OP: Get in there, explore the different methods and roms, and have fun. Good news is that it's really hard to brick this phone, so it's a good platform to try all that is out there. Bigjoe gave you a good start by pointing you to the ISET and Super Noobie Question thread.
