is there an app or does anybody know how to enable you android phone to be an AP and access the external SDCARD from ipad? I've tried samba filesharing, file expert, wifi file explorer. None of them works because they require wifi. I'm looking for a capability like Airstash. In stead of buying an airstash, i can just use a microsd card in the phone.

With Tablets becoming more popular but connectivity seemingly coming in second thought. Was wondering if there are any wireless file transfer progs that would be able to send files back and forth between phone and tablet ?
Bump requires there network I believe. Dropbox as well requires "cloud" uploading. And ES File explorer and others require files to be shared on a network from a PC/Mac.
Any Android to Android solutions ?

However, I know that at the moment there's no such option in TF101.
Will there ever be such an option?
Or is there another way to use my WiFi bandwidth to share large files between two Android devices?
I have the Nexus S and i downloaded a Bluetooth file sharing app to do most of my transferring.

I looked up direct wifi in wikipedia. It looks like only one device needs to be direct wifi because you gs2 will create its own access point. Your tf should connect via ad-hoc protocol.
For example, I don't have direct wifi on my gs1 but the tethering program creates its own soft access point and my tf conmects using ad hoc and I can get internet.
Once you connect the tf to your gs2 I imagine you would need a file manager on both that would support some sort of cifs link, smb, or other method so you could see the directory contents of the phone and tf. EStrongs file explorere may be a good start.

I'll try that app.
I only seems logical that if I can tether with SGS2, then they should be able to share files.
I've found tons of remote desktop apps, but is there anything that will just access my filesystem? Hopefully as clean and as intuitive as astro or es. Maybe I'm just searching the wrong stuff, maybe astro and es can do this but i don't know how.
note: i want to be able to do this from the internet, not the same network.

if you mean access your tab from somewhere else then it is possible. you could ftp into it by using the ftp server app on your tab and note down the external ip.

Depending on what you are trying to do there are various solutions. To access my tab from my desktop I use WiFi File Explorer. To access my computer files remotely I use Tonido and PocketCloud Explore.

+1 for WiFi File Explorer, too. That's also a great app.
Personally I suggest setting up a ftp server. It is very versatile and can be accessed anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.
Mozilla has a good, easy, and and most importantly free one called FileZilla. Both astro and es have ftp support so getting to your files will be easy, and seemless.

I'm a lazy bastard. I use either SSHFS or SMB/CIFS. FTP is not as secure as SFTP.
If you have a SSH server on the host, you can FUSE mount it as a file system over SSH by way of SSHFS. My tablet can both mount hosts (sshfs package in Debian chroot) and be mounted by my PCs, netbook, etc. SFTP is also possible but wasteful IMHO.
SMB/CIFS - Windows network shares. You can access files on machines using a client. You can access your /mnt/sdcard from another machine by installing a server on your tablet.
I use "Samba Filesharing" from the market place and can access my tablets storage from PC perfectly fine. Like wise a client can be used to access a Windows box or a unix box or Android device with Samba (or simillar server). I use File Manager HD (menu->LAN connection) or SharesFinder to access network shares from my tablet. Astro has a plugin for it, just go to the market and Google. On my PCs, I use Windows Explorer and Samba (client) to access files on my tablet.
The Prime ROM also comes with CifsManager, which can mount file systems over the same protocol and make them appear as part of your tablets storage. So two way is possible very easily. PC's can do the same to the tablet when running a server like Samba.
In my experience: SMB/CIFS isn't as good as SSHFS for such stuff but when Windows is in the mix, it's best, and works better with Android than FTP or NFS, and is perhaps the most reliable.
For any access via the Internet you may have to configure port forwarding on your router (both at home and e.g. at work) to your machine. SSHFS/SFTP works best for that, FTP and SMB/CIFS are greater configuration pain, depending on your packet filters.

I use FileManager HD to access my NAS and other shared computer files.......it's easy to configure, has great functionality, looks good, and is free.
Is it possible to create something like a windows share folder with android so i can use my tablet with dock as sort of a laptop. I can access files from windows shares and from my server share (which is not windows) but it doesnt go the other way. I would also like to be able to transfer files to my GS3 Mobile from my transformer.
Right now my pc is in the shop and my trasformer is basically my new laptop as my last one just died and my desktop is in the shop (i dont want to get into it but i basically should have built my own desktop this time i didnt anyway...)
So yeah is it possible? other than say dropbox as currently thats the only type i can find to do such a thing. But i want more of a network share.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know any apps that can do that without root priviliges though.
Another option would be sharing the SD content through an FTP server (I have no recommendations for specific programs though).

How do you set up your SD card as a network drive? I have Samba set up, but I can't access my sd card from there, I have to send things to the downloads folder in the internal storage

menu button -> settings -> Other Fileshare Settings -> Second Shared Folder is probably what you're looking for.
only caveat is that it only allows sharing of extra sd cards with vfat formatting, so it was a no go with my 64GB but worked fine with the 16GB I have.
I'm using an app called 'FTP Server'. Free and simple to use. Your android device will act as an FTP server once the 'button' is activated. Use a FTP client on Windows to enter the address, username and password. There's also a method of setting up a new network (via 'add a new network') to appear as a folder when opening up 'Computer' to see the list of your drives. However, I don't like that being visible all the time, hence the reason I just connect via a FTP client.
The only downside is that FTP isn't that secure. SFTP and FTPS is meant to be more secure. I don't know the specifics, maybe someone else with more knowledge can help inform you. I reckon it's fine for activating, transferring some files, then turning off.

stupid question, I know But I still have no good method to copy data between N5 and PC (Win8). If N5 is connected to PC I see it as a device. This method does often not work properly. I have had many problems: I copy data to the phone but the explorer on the phone does not see that data. Some of you said this is a problem of buggy MTP. When I try to copy hundreds of files from N5 to PC it not even start copying. Are these problems normal?!
And a question besides: the PC does not recognize my N5 as a USB3 device. Should it?
I can copy data in Recover via adb, but this is really unhandy.
Which method are you using withoput any problems?
Either one of the following work on WiFi...
1. Use an FTP server and transfer from phone to PC.
2. Use AirDroid on the Play Store, it works wonders.

Oh aaahhh FTP is a great idea. And there is also a FTP server on my NAS haha.
Anyway, thanks for your answer. But it's a shame that copying from/to N5 is so tricky. An external SD card was sooooo easy

Definitely agreed with you there. Its the price we pay for faster access to our content and being on a developer device with the cloud in mind.
I don't have any issues. Just turn usb debugging off I've found if it doesn't recognize the phone properly
WiFi works easily enough. Once you've set the proper share permissions, any network enabled file explorer such as ES File Explorer will be able to copy files back and forth. This has the advantage of being able to initiate everything from the phone itself.

FTP is not usable. I tried andFTP. I have about 10k files to transfer to my new phone. It's faster to write every bit on my new phone by hand :/

If you're transferring a folder full of files you could always use adb push to send the files to your device.
Honestly though I haven't had any issues just copying files over using MTP with the odd exception of Titanium Backup files.
Fast File Transfer works by turning your phone to a WiFi router and web server to share a file. Another option is to use ES File Explorer and transfer over CIFS(SMB or Windows file sharing).

One more option:
Use a flash drive and short cable. If rooted, stickmount will make the nexus 5 see and use a flash drive attached to the USB connection with a short cable. If not rooted another app exists that similarly makes a flash drive visible.
