[Q] wifi tether - Thunderbolt General

Does anyone have 100% stable wifi tether with any tether app? I tether to my ps3 for netflix and gaming. It is fine for a bit then mobile network just starts cycling. From that point its worthless.

I use it often for netflix or other video or music playing, anything that can buffer, and it works fine but I dont think I would trust it for gaming.

stable and wireless dont go together

Geez....get cable internet.

I think this hits it on the head. Buffering is your friend on mobile/wireless networks, more so on a mobile connection shared via a WiFi connection. There are just too many variables there for latency-sensitive applications.

I'm not entirely convinced it's your tether, though. You say that your LTE connection begins cycling. What ROM/Radio are you on? I've never had trouble with leaving the connection open for long periods of time. Sometimes it drops, but it's never begun cycling.

I game on the 4G usb modem from Verizon in a 3g area... Works fine

Doesn't gaming require very low latency? I thought Mobile Wifi hotspots had extremely high latency?

You could just download wireless tether from the market. Works just as well.
I'd upload it for you but I'm not at home. If its not done by the time I get home, I will.

Wifi Tether is adhoc whereas the wireless tethering app acts like a real wifi hotspot connection.

May I ask what's the difference?
And will verizon be able to tell the difference (or whether I am tethering)? I'll mostly using for light surfing (web browsing, emails). Not interesting in watching TV over 4G.
Good question, I love the tether feature and only use it once in a while but when I need it I need it

Ad-hoc is computer to computer where as the wifi hotspot app handles connections like a real router. I believe this to be the case anyway. So, for example, when I was in Las Vegas I tried to set my laptop to stream videos to my xbox through Windows Media Center. I fired up my trusty droid thinking WiFi tether would help me out. But, it set-up an ad-hoc network and WMC will not stream to extenders over ad-hoc. I was kinda bummed.

[Q] HTC thunderbolt wifi

Do you use the wifi feature on your thunderbolt and if so have you used it in your gaming console and do you get lag on it?
I'm assuming you mean mobile hotspot feature and I have tried it and yes I do get lag. The mobile hotspot does not give great constant signal so there are many breaks and drop outs. I would not recommend using this but give it a shot if you want.
Hope this helps
The factory mobile hotspot app has a cap on the speed. I get better results from other tether apps.

Agreed, you will get better results from additional tether apps that are offered.

+1
even using other tether apps, things like online gaming and streaming video are not exactly ideal
Tried xbox live through it and was disconnected while searching for any online games. I would say that it's probably not the best idea.
I play wow, with vent and sometimes pandora on 2-3 bars of 3g with low pings...
Edit: using easytether (wired)

I played some games and downloaded so songs with PDA net on my desktop. It was really fast on 4G. But you have to pay for PDA net aftrler awhile. I use wireless tether to connect my xoom when I need it

Haven't messed with the wireless to much I'd go with a third party app for it. Or USB tether. Can run xbox live with usb tether even without much problems. Atleast in my experience

PS3 with wireless tether?

i currently use my phone as a hotspot to play xbox live, i may be getting a ps3, will it work as well? i am using the MIUI stock wireless tether currently. i use it for my laptop, asus transformer, wifes hp touchpad and the 360 already so i assume that the ps3 will not be a problem but just curious.
dont worry, no more than 1 device at a time on my phones tether..

As long as you set up the hotspot, your game consoles will connect (NDS, PS3, Xbox360, Computers, and PSP's), even other cellphones. It turns it into a wireless router for anything to connect too.
I WILL SAY THIS THO!!!! 3g connection SUCKS with hotspot if your gonna do online play. I played CoD with hotspot before i couldnt kill nothin due to lag. If you got 4g hotspot your golden.

Heh, good luck getting that on MIUI. No 4G support in China so no 4G support on MIUI.

true, MIUI does not have 4G, and did not know china didn't as well. but either way if he went to a different rom with 4g support and he could somehow get 4g somewhere he would be all set.
PS3 and hotspot

afaik you can't 'improve' tethering, it either works or its a crap connection as it depends on your phone's signal strength... I get good results with the wifi tether 3.0 (or 3.1 can't remember ) pre-12 version, though I don't play xbox over the connection so I couldn't say if it works okay
I have 4g full bars, its very annoying, I can surf the web alright but online gaming is pretty bad.

Probably your ping times or NAT, neither of which can be helped much. 4G is plenty fast for XBL.

4G vs WIFI

This is weird when I run speed test on 4g I have download speeds of 7mbs avg. When I run Wifi I get avg of 3mbs which is about half as fast, but as far as my expierence Wifi works twice as fast when surfing web or downloading files what gives. What do you guys prefer, I mean while you are home around Wifi.

I use wifi. My 4g network sucks at my home.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA
Generally my results are similar. My home ISP is pretty terrible though, really the only time I use Wifi is to download ROMs, for whatever reason I seem get issues if I download them over the Mobile Network, possibly corrupted downloads.
Otherwise just for Wifi calling.

Everytime I used Wifi calling my calls would be dropped with in a min got that crap turned off plus it may use plan mins lol

WiFi & 4G are around the same at my home.... WiFi is usually around 9.5 mb/s while 4G is around 6 to 7 mb/s. Call quality is noticeably better on 4G than WiFi.
T-Mo has a free option in your account to not get charged for WiFi calling minutes...it's disabled by default so log on or call and get it changed if you use WiFi for calling.

4G is spotty where I live.. maybe 500kbs at best.. though at my friends place, I can get 9-11Mbs.
My wifi works great though, I get about 18Mbs down at home, and about 7Mbs at work. WiFi calling works great for me at home.

This is my theory remember its not fact just a theory.
Using the mobile data connection you have to share with every person in that area on T-Mobile. Using wifi you only share with the people in your neighborhood. Even tho you are getting those speeds with a higher ping because of couple hundred people playing pandora or something it will slow the process.
Another thing remember a speed test is just that a test. It is done in a short period of time. I can run a speed test at my house through out the day and get varying results. Even while getting the max DL speed sometimes things will take longer to load then when Im barely getting 1mb speeds. The load on the network has a very large result on how fast things actually download.
Good point

I hope you aren't sharing your wifi with others in your neighborhood

Heh, no but cable internet does share from the hub.
I was just about to comment on ping times... even though throughput is high, ping does play a major role.

Ok...... My statement was for those people.who do not have unlimited plan...and how to make sure your wifi calls DO NOT come out of your monthly minutes.
