no names in messages - HTC Desire S

I just bought a new HTC Desire S Everything seems to be working fine, except in messages the names of my contacts are not displayed.
All that is displayed are the mobile numbers.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Or does anyone know how to fix it?

Well, mine shows for some milliseconds the number and then shows the name, Check if you have the exact number in your contact list.

Im an age old android user from my HD2 - American android doesnt do it why the hell does this native device do it haha
This on is a mystery to me never never seen it before

Right try this its worked for me.
Settings-power-fast boot (uncheck it)
Turn off your phone wait a few seconds and switch it on.
Boom! Working
Must be some sort of fast boot state save or something

Not sure if this would help, but I would also look at the format for storing numbers. I always use +countrycode-areacode-localnumber (without the dashes).

I don't see how this can be related, I initially had fast boot on and got both names and numbers but for the last few weeks I've had it off and I still get names and numbers.
I'd be more tempted to believe what @samit r said above and ensure that all my numbers are all stored with a consistent number format, I also store all my numbers with +44 in the front and drop the leading zero (my country code)

Might I add after doing the step above a pop up came up saying that a HTC service had to recover from serious issue and has been restarted also it said report the issue to HTC .
Not sure but its fixed it for now

That sounds like you powered down and removed the battery with fast boot on?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

Didn't remove the battery.
This phone is gonna need some getting used to

Save numbers in international format (eg for UK +44792xxxxxx) also make sure you don't have duplicated number (same number saved under different names) .

I also found it on my DS and solved.
try as follows:
1. Settings->Application->Manager Applications->All, find the "Messages" sys app.
2. Clear Data and cache. (Don't worry, it won't clean your SMS yet)
3. return and reopen Messages app, it works well

Voicemail Icon Stuck On: No VM's in my Inbox

Hello All,
Wanted to see if anyone else with a G2x has the tape looking icon stuck on in the upper tool bar. I do not have any messages in my voicemail. I have done a battery pull, and nothing. When I pull the bar down, it shows that I have one voicemail, but really I don't.
I have searched and could not find anyone that has had this problem yet. I am running 2.3.3.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, downloaded a SMS app and want to delete the original messaging app. Is there a way to do that?
Call your VM, leave a message. Delete it. Icon should go away.
Tried that. This has been stuck on for over a week. Gotten numerous VM's and have deleted then. Nothing changes.

Bummer. That method worked for my stuck icon. Sorry man.
try these two options if possible
1. take out the simcard and put it in a different phone and see if the VM icon shows up, then put the SIM back in ur phone
or
2. download "Visual Voicemail" by tmobile and use that for voicemails (might need to sign up for it through the Tmo website first)
The same thing happened to me twice. This is what I did to make it disappear.
1) Shut the phone down manually.
2) Remove battery.
3) Remove Sim Card.
4) Replace battery (without Sim Card). First time it showed the voicemail sign (I know, strange). Check in your case if it is there.
5) If NOT, then turn the phone off again. Remove battery.
6) Replace Sim Card and battery. Boot up your phone and VOILA.
Hope this helps.

I did this twice last night, and it is still there. Wonder what the heck it is. It is frustrating because I use that to determine if I have a VM or not. Now it looks like I always do. Thank you for the help.

Call your number and leave a VM. Then call from your phone and erase it. Works for me!

[Q] Desire S dialing Contacts Automatically

Hello everybody. I had gifted my Dad a Desire S on his birthday. After a month of use he came back to me saying that the phone is dialing contacts by itself without his knowledge. This is because the people call back saying they got a call from him when he didn't even dial their nos. I checked plenty of times and used the phone myself to see if the problem repeated. but it never happened.
Then once after I had finished a call on it i put down the phone, it just started dialing some random no. And NO there is no accidental key press.
Anybody having this same problem and solved it?? If so please tell me.
Sound fishy. Fists thing to do would be to rule out a dogdey app with a trojan. Instal and run Lookout Mobile Security from market. Does that find any culprits?

ok I will check that....but before i do it...can you tell me how to check using lookout mobile security? is it just like a virus scanner?
sorry....this is the first time I'm using an android phone!

After running above recommendation from wnp_79 I'd be tempted to perform a full factory reset and then run the phone without as few as possible installed applications apart from those used and recommended by everyone and only those installed from market (with the exception of swype if he uses that). If you can't decide if an application is one of these then don't install it.
Watch to see if the problem still happens.....

Yes is a good free virus scanner. The paid version adds real time web browsing protection if you use the stock browser. Get it here...

hi guys just reporting back.....did all of the above.....the same problem returns.....finally i installed a call confirmation app......but now it asks "do you want to call this no?" anyways it doesn't dial the no automatically.
Can this be because of the touch screen sensitivity?

I would have yes, if he put the phone unlocked into a pocket and it occurred, but above you state that the phone did it while untouched so NO.
I'd return the phone and attempt to claim a replacement under warranty! make a video - if possible of the phone doing it - so they believe you!

"Unable to send message after multiple attempts" MMS error with OrDroid

First the details:
Sensation XE
OrDroid 8.6.
S-on
HTCdev unlocked
4ext recovery
Smartflash enabled
and formatted all partitions except SD Card before flashing
_____
The problem is that none of the MMS messages will go through if containing a photo that was taken with the flashed ROM. However, if I try to send a photo that was taken prior to OrDroid ROM, it goes through without a problem.
Doesn't matter if I send it directly out of the message app or going first to Gallery and share it. After about a minute I get the error in the notifications saying "Unable to send message after multiple attempts" and "Generic network failure" or "Service denied" written below.
The MMS settings and Mobile Data are all fine, considering it works with old images. Plus I can't notice any difference in the images' details between the new ones and the ones taken prior to flashing OrDroid.
One more thing, I also cannot receive MMS messages. I get a message with a download button and nothing happens if I click it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I'm not looking for a ROM changing solution.
Edit: Ok, after about 30 new attempts of sending out photos, I see the problem isn't with newly taken images, but it's completely random. Now, about 1 in 10 attempts goes through. By the way, the signal bar is full. I really don't get it...
No one has any ideas? That's rather sad.
Hi I'm running Ordroid 8.6.5 and I'm able to take pictures and send them immediately, new pictures. I just tested it. It works perfectly for me. Perhaps do a full wipe and re flash the newest rom. I can say it's NOT ordroid because its working perfectly for me.maybe the download got corrupted somehow. I would definitely do a full wipe, download a NEW download to the computer then place NEW download to root of SD card and flash. Don't use old download as it is likely corrupted in some way. See if this solves the issue. Please do full wipe before flashing NEW download. This should do the trick. I'm hopeful this will fix the issue. Let me know. Because we know its NOT a issue with ORDROID, so give that a try . Good luck! Hope this helps out!
Also check and make sure settings are correct, if so do the new download of ordroid, see if it fixes the issue.

Thanks for replying, realsis.
I did a full wipe again and reflashed. I didn't bother downloading the file again, because the md5 matches and the file's fine. The MMS still doesn't work though.
So sorry, I can't think of another possible fix. Perhaps someone else has one ? Very strange because I'm using the same rom as you are and I can use mine without issues. I really hope you find a fix soon. Take care.

Thanks realsis.
Anyway, apparently ROM really isn't the issue. I've just flashed InsertCoin Evolution v1.91 and the MMS still won't go through.
I truly am baffled.
Check the apn settingd for your carrier...sometimes they get goofy ...ive had this happen before and I had the wrong settings..even though I never touched them...i googled for the settings and fixed it instantly
I've also tried that. Manually typed in proxy and port, and sadly it did not do the trick. Almost none of the MMS will go through.
I would call your carrier and see if it's goofed at their end, maybe they can help.one time I had to call for something and even though I'm using custom rom (they don't know this) they were able to fix my issue. Cannot hurt to try?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
I called them just now, and we went over the APN settings again, and she told me to change the authentication type to PAP (was 'none' before). Of course that didn't do the trick, and we parted without resolving the issue. She told me it should work and that was basically it.
It's getting really annoying because I know it really SHOULD work! Poop.
I've been having same problem. I'm using sensation running energy ics ROM. The work around i use is i have to use quickpics (app) and crop the image before sending... Almost as if Android isn't resizing the image correctly when "converting" to mms. This almost always works.
Thanks billybag, but that didn't do the trick.
The thing is, the problem is the same with the incoming MMS. It says download and after I click it, it says downloading for a minute or two and just pops back to download.
I tried really cropping the image with Quickpic (to about a pixle or two ) and it still didn't send it.

Stay Awake always enabled after boot

So, as the title suggests, the Stay Awake feature under Settings>Applications>Development keeps getting reenabled when I boot my phone.
I've currently got Tasker disabling this feature on boot, but I shouldn't have to resort to this.
It started happening a LONG time ago, and have no idea what caused it, or if it was like this from the get go.
I've used my limited knowledge to try and find the file containing the setting (if there even is one) to no avail, and have searched around only to come up with squat. (although I did find a bunch of people having trouble with the setting disabling itself, when they didn't want it to. back wards from me.)
Does anyone have any clue at all as to what I can do? Boot up has slowed to a crawl (amongst other things) ever since I installed Tasker and started making profiles for it, so anything I can do to make this setting disabled on a permanent basis without Tasker doing it for me would be awesome.
What Rom?

If its jellybean then there are issues with settings sticking. If not I would suggest backing up your sd card and fully format it. Fully wipe phone and reflash. Then only bring back files from sd backup that you know you want like music, pics, titanium backups, etc. Also don't select google account during setup. Let it boot first and then add google account through settings.

There's got to be a better way. I know fix permissions actually breaks certain things (contact photos) so it seems plausible that it might have broken permissions to whatever file contains that setting (making the file read-only).
Barring any other feed back a reflash probably is the only way to get it to stick. Almost might be worth it to get my boot time back to where it was.
Or... you know... I could always switch to aospX and stop being a little whiny baby lol
Formatting of the SD card needs to be Fat32 right?
Yeah you could try hunting it down to either a file on sd or in system or a google sync bug but wiping may be the easier route. I hear you though its not always convenient to full wipe. I use to flash a lot but it rather bothers me now setting everything back up. If you want to go Aosp route jellytime is my favorite. R15 is the most stable version.

I went the aospx route. Cut my boot up time in half (from 2:20 down to one minute now). Just need to find a launcher worth a damn now. I used to have launcher pro, and don't really want to pay for another. Know of any free ones that show message count and all that, because Apex doesn't unless I buy the pro version.

[Q] REQ: Lock screen app with data wipe

I am looking for a lock screen app that will wipe the device of all data if the password is entered incorrectly after a set amount of times. Does anyone know of any software that can accomplish this task.
Thanks in advance.
bump
It would be easier to use the android device manager . Just go to the play store and go to device manager . Then if you ever lose it you can whip and lock it from the web

Thanks for the suggestion but this is still not what I am looking for. I store data that is time sensitive. I would not like anybody to have any access to it.The remote wipe would only work if I was aware that the device had been lost/stolen. Due to the off-chance that one of the employees did lose it on a night out and not inform me by the morning the data would still be accessible. The employees travel a lot in China and this has happened to our company in the past so I am not being paranoid.
