[Q] T-Mobile 4g signal takes awhile to kick in - HTC Sensation

I just got my Sensation 4g from Walmart. It is on HSPA+ on T-Mobile and when trying to open a web site or sync Facebook or use any kind of data for that matter it is slow to connect if it even connects at all. I then have to hit refresh a few times before it actually kicks in. Is anyone having any similar issues? I had a myTouch4g previously and never experienced this.

Yep mine too. Somtimes its super fast. Sometimes super slow

Had the same exact issue. All good now. Even WiFi was capped at 1.5 download for some reason.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App

i noticed that also with mines.. even when it dies get a bit fast it is still just a tad faster than what my nexus s was. I live in Orlando, one of tmo's supposid biggest 4g markets

I've also noticed the same thing.

Same thing here. Did a speed test and it says I am only getting 573 kbps download and 217 kbps upload
I had dial-up that's faster than that lol
EDIT: Tried running the test again, and I keep getting a network connection error, and it won't even run the test. but I got 4 bars. Wtf?

Its not that my speeds are that slow its like it takes forever to start going. Its annoying because the first time it never works right away. Has anyone been able to find a fix? It reminds me of my Nexus. If this continues I definititly cant keep this phone. A radio update might be the only fix

I'm thinking HTC could fix a lot of their issues with an update. Include a radio update, a software update for the touchscreen problems, and unlock the bootloader, all in one package hopefully

We soups should report this on their fb page

Experiencing the same thing; this morning on the way in had 4 bars of 4g and it wouldn't connect to anything. Reboot fixed it; then it happened again. Very tempted to return and wait it out for a little bit.
Also been getting "error 502's" all over the place...egh

Try this.
Speed up the latency on your Sensation
Market loads instantly now.

Thanks digi, I was just about to post this. Its working great for me!

dial-up doesn't get any faster than 56 kbps at the most.. just saying

I'm having the same issues. Full bars of 4G coverage, but one minute I'm getting 9Mbps download speeds, the next minute everything is timing out. It's gotten very frustrating.
The "fix" posted above did nothing for me.

Mine fixed for a while then went back to same thing

Samsung introduced a new feature on the SGS2 called "Fast Dormancy." It's a battery saving feature that disconnects data when not active. It might be a feature in 2.3 and HTC might have enabled it too. Maybe you guys can find the toggle.
Here's the SGS2 thread...

This is exactly what's happening with me. I think it mgiht be a coverage thing, I checked the coverage map and it shows as Moderate at best in my little area

There are a couple of reasons I don't believe it's a coverage issue. Mainly, I'm within 200 yds of a tower. When data is working, it's really strong. If the signal were weak, I can't imagine getting 9 Mbps download speeds. The speeds would be consistently poor rather than excellent one minute and not working at all the next. Also, nobody else in the area with a TMO 4G phone is having this issue.

I'm bringing this up because I am having 4G issues in my place. The data cuts in and out a lot, and sometimes hangs with the up arrow lit, forcing me to use 3G for the time being. I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems.
I am also thinking if VZ is throttling or not, but 17 days into my billing cycle so far, I have used only 2.5 gigs, hardly a reason to be considered excessive.

I doubt verizon is throttling. You are proly in a 4G fringe area. If you don't need 4G all the time, you should change the radio to CDMA auto. Your battery will quickly drain looking for 4G signal (or trying to hold on to a weak signal)

I'm well inside the 4G area, and it worked well where I live until about a week ago, and its been flaky ever since.
what25,
You are not alone. Did you find a solution to the problem? If not, I hope you didn't do anything drastic.
I also have the problem (in Houston, on thunderbolt) and have found others on xda dev and rootzwiki that are having similar issues (also in Houston area). It's not just you. It also seems to be only thunderbolt users.
I'll post the links to others having the problem. Also, have you noticed it in general or has it only been with certain apps. For a while it was a problem with my 4g connecting. Now the 4g is connected but hardly loads. Plenty of apps seem fine, maybe slower. But it is mainly Google services that don't work. My Google voice doesn't work at all. I don't get notifications for new messages and the messages don't load in the main screen. Google plus doesn't load at all. Youtube is very slow, and the stock browser is also barely usable. I've had the problems for about the past 4 days (I think I really started noticing on Friday). These problems only occur on 4g by the way, not 3g.
Please respond if your situation sounds like it's the same problem.

Same here (Webster). I started the thread at Rootzwiki, here are the details of my problem:
"I'm having the strangest problem, my browser is not cooperating with 4G. Especially with Google, the progress bar just sits there nearly indefinitely. It can load full sites, such as topgear.com, but it hangs at the end before the bar is full.
I can toggle down to 3G and it works fine. I'm currently running the OTA MR2 radio. This started, however, some time after I flash Chingy's latest leak. I've flash radios back and forth a couple of times, cleared cache and dalvik, clear Internet application data, I've even done a complete wipe (wiped everything twice) and re-flashed without restoring anything what so ever. Nothing works other than toggling down to 3G.
That being said, it's not a connection issue. I can tether and it runs great, speed tests ran from the phone have good results and most application that use data are fine. I'm baffled.
Any suggestion? Any one ran into something like this?
Thanks."
Taken from the thread I started in Q&A.

Yea I would describe the situation as very similar.
The browser would be very slow, or sometimes hang, when trying to load a webpage. When on 3G, everything works fine. My GMails have been getting delayed notifications on 4G as well. Havnt checked youtube, but I assume a similar situation would arise.
I switched back to mr1 radio and lte to no avail. What the hell, it's been 4 days. Has anyone contacted Verizon about this issue yet?

Apparently the issue has to do with the DNS settings. Not sure why Verizon changed their DNS on us. Here's a thread on rootzwiki that contains the solution to fixing.

i called and no one has reported it. i put in my report and after so, i decided hey i wanna try the nightly synergy. 7/25 on 2.75 radio, now everything works. but just to make sure i wiped and flashed cm7 and omgb back for a fresh start, 4g locked on but still had the same problems. im in the Houston area as well, i work downtown and live off 8 and the not so newly opened 90, i get great coverage never loose 4g.
Very odd. If it was due to a particular radio, it should have resolved when you flashed another. If the fix posted by strwberrybened does not work, grab SetDNS from the market & change to GoogleDNS or OpenDNS
Yes, no 4G in Deer Park at around 3:15 pm this afternoon. I was at my doctor's office and noticed that I only had 3G. I was unable to access the Internet via my T-Bolt and rebooted, it restored the Internet but not 4G. I am charging my phone now and will check again soon. I am using the leaked radio posted just a few days ago on the RootzWiki site.
I'm in Deer Park too, also 4g is back to normal. About time, just do a normal reboot and 4g should be back to normal. No more 4g lag!

ATTN: Simple Mobile Users "New Radio"

I wanted to post this thread do to huge hit I took in my data performance after switching over to the new radio recommended for the 2.3.4 ROMs that have been surfacing.

Well that's crazy scary. I for one love Simple Mobile.s speeds and it's significantly better than T Mobile. I hope someone else has Simple Mobile like us and who's flashed their radio so we can confirm this. I hope you get your speeds back up mate.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It can NEVER be better or ANY different than T-Mobile guys..its the same...you just pay your bill to someone else who buys minutes from T-Mobile stock...
Its all in your mind and scientifically and realistically impossible for you to have different speeds on Simple mobile than what we have on T-mobile. You are using the same "Control Switch", "Radius" and GSM/WCDMA towers and radios we use except yours is tracked through the up-start "Simple Mobile".
You have a bad radio and I would suggest you not even play with radio flashing. they are sometimes pointless and cause more headache as you can clearly see by your case. stick to what you know works.
Trust me..They don't claim to go through T-Mobile..They are T-mobile bro...Just sub-leasing minutes...I recently stopped working for T-Mobile and I know for sure.
Similar to how my original job, Helio was buying airtime from Sprint...We were a MVNO and not an actual service provider of sorts...Just a novelty company with our own hardware and no service so we rented it from them at wholesale prices cheaper than what they gave there own customers some times...Exact same service..Different billing and company.
I hope this clears up your misunderstanding.
I have no misunderstanding boss. Should have written a more clearer post up there explaining my view but it was just a post. Anyways I can swear up down left and right I receive better COVERAGE and SPEEDS than T Mobile any damn day of the week. I've switched over so many people who were on T Mobile to Simple and they will all tell me the same. My sister is currently on T Mobile and seriously thinking of switching over to Simple because her service has been berserk lately. And its not only her but friends I know as well are complaining the same thing. I know it seems crazy and I really have no clear explanation why, but its fact here, at least in Kansas City. And its not just the phone. I change phones like the weather so I've tried it on countless number of phones and it seems to have jumped up signal wise considerably. it honestly baffles me why more people don't switch over and save considerably on bogus taxes and other nonsense. I hope this thread doesn't become a flame war. I am just trying to help the guy up there and clear my position at the same time. Oh plus I've worked in countless cellular companies and even managed my own so I guess I have some knowledge to what I'm saying here. Thanks.

I've use Simple mobile for one year on several Android devices and performance is no different than T-mobile because its using the same infrastructure.
Regardless, I upgraded my radio and its working very well for me with the InsertCoin 2.1 firmware.
It's an illuuuuusionnnnn. LOL
But that's what it is. I put it out there for you. Wish you the best and hope you get your radio issue sorted out. Be blessed.

throttled?
text "info" to 848484 and check your data usage.
if your over 2gb you will, i repeat, WILL be throttled. I dont care what anyone else says, every month for the past 3-4 months ive watched my usage and right around the 2gb mark (give or take 100mb or 2) my DL speed drops from an average of 1.8-2.x mbps to .45-.67mbps.
This originally happened to me on my MyTouch 3g Slide, and i almost threw it against a wall lol. Then suddenly one day my data was back to normal. Then it again happened to me on my Vibrant, which was when i got curious. Originally thought it was the roms i was flashing, then noticed that it happened usually towards the end of my billing cycle. Now its happened yet AGAIN on my Sensation, billing cycle started on the 29th and i was throttled last week, 2,223.34mb (ive downloaded alot, 1st time on 4G )
So it may not be your radio, just your data usage.
P.S- Didnt mean to go on a shpeel <--spelling? lol

Any way to improve wifi reception?

Is the problem the hardware? Or can the software be tweaked? Just wanna know because as everyone knows it is horrible on this phone.

Helpful....
and really, 30 feet? that's not exactly far.....
Its not the router, it is the phone. Mine, though it will remember the networks I use, will NEVER reconnect to one when its in range. Signal strength is also an issue. All previous phones I've had have been able to get at least 2 bars of wifi signal at the other end of our house, but the Infuse just can't do it. Drops to the very least signal indicator on the display and will not pull any data.
I've had a bit better luck with Infused 1.6, but it may just be in my head as I don't think that it actually changes anything in the software for wifi over the stock ROM.
There are a LOT of posts about this and there doesn't seem to be an answer (at least that I have been able to find) to it or any work-arounds. This is really my only complaint with the phone, the wifi is absolute garbage. Some have said that its because the phone only does b/g and not N, so if you have N and you can set it to B or G that may be better.

Well from 30 feet away you should have full bars.
But at the op, I know what you mean about wifi signal. I learned though that even though it shows low bars, my speed was still good.
On the other hand, for some odd reason the miui rom made my wifi signal better. I went from about 16 mbs down to 23 down. Maybe a coincidence, I dunno.

I think it's mostly a hardware problem. The consensus among those who own the phone seems to be that wifi reception is average to poor.
I don't have the knowledge to be able to speak authoritatively, but I think software *can* have an impact.
With my particular Infuse, I have better reception with the new MIUI rom posted by Mikey than anything else I've tried (almost all of them). I get full reception - "excellent" - in locations where on any other rom I would have "fair" or "poor"...
I don't know if this makes sense but that is my experience.

While Strych is being rude (normal from his other posts) I have to agree that it might just be your situation.
My router is on the ground floor and I can use my wifi from the third floor in my house.
Then again I've used Wifi Analyzer (from the market) to test the channels and see what wans were overlapping mine and select one that was empty with good strength.
I also tend not to flash beta roms and then wonder why things aren't working as expected.
If you want help with your issue, you may want to post in the Q&A forum and describe what you're running, what problem you're having (specifically), and what you've done to test/fix the problem. Otherwise, if you're just ranting, I can understand that as well.
Hmm well a lot of helpful tips. I will be purchasing a brand new router. The one I have is just a basic Linksys. So ill upgrade the next level up. Idk I've never been able to get great reception. But on the flipside Ive always used a basic router.

What were you on before? AT&T Froyo or Rogers Gingerbread?
One of the problems with Rogers Gingerbread were crappy TCP buffer settings - CM7 had the "better" AT&T settings for a long time until it was updated to the new UCKI3/I4 settings. This would explain faster WiFi performance regardless of signal quality.
Signal quality has always been fine for me. Froyo has some annoying power management issues where the wifi chipset basically dies and needs to be disabled/reenabled to reconnect (This is actually common across many devices with the BCM4330 - happens a lot on the Tab 10.1 too, and in that case it's sometimes so bad that it hoses up the lockscreen.), Gingerbread seems to have fixed the wifi-death issues on our devices.

How is Wi-Fi?

Seems in the few reviews I've read Wi-Fi signal strength is not all that great, and this worries me. Last year when I had the HTC Sensation it also had really bad Wi-F reception, often dropping signal when I went in certain rooms in my house.
Would really appreciate some feedback from those already using the Rogers or AT&T version of this phone. Is Wi-Fi signal strength good, bad, or somewhere in between?
I personally don't have my phone yet, should be getting it this friday. However other people have been reporting that the Rogers version has had spotty wifi reception.

Yeah that thread actually made me create this one. I want to know if others are having issues or if its just certain routers.
Hopefully someone with the AT&T version can chime in pretty soon.
might be worth researching if it was an 802.11a/b/g/n router it was communicating with, and what chipset the router uses. Make/model can figure that out though.
Yep, I can confirm that the WiFi has been a bit spotty. Not horrible. When I'm in my living room, maybe 10-15 feet from the router, it's aces. In my bedroom though, through 2 walls and maybe 50 feet away, it can go up and down, but I've only noticed it once or twice in the past week.
Once, however, as I was leaving work for the day, the phone reported that it was still connected to WiFi, even once I got a mile or so down the road. I had to turn wifi off/on again before it resumed normal operation.

Yeah, I am hoping that the AT&T version doesn't have the same problem too. I know that the Rogers and AT&T version are the same hardware but it seems like it is a software issue.
Hopefully, *fingers crossed* the AT&T version doesn't come with the same problem and has already fixed the problem in the software.

I think I read on here or Android Central that someone played with one in the AT&T store and said the Wi-Fi was fluctuating like crazy.

Yeah, someone here wrote that and it will likely have the same problem unfortunately. However, we don't know at the store how far away the router is or even how good the quality of the router is.
So you have to make sure you base your analysis on where the problem lies by first having a baseline. Meaning right now I know that with my iPhone my wifi work very well and has great coverage with my Cisco E4200. So once I get my HOX I can then compared it to see what the difference is.
Follow a process like that then we will be able to tell for sure if the AT&T model does have a wifi problem and it is a problem with the handset and not some other external factor.
Same problems here ...

Regrettably, I seem to be having similar problems. Like you, I also get situations where my phone reports that it's still connected to my WiFi network, both at work or at home, yet I could be 1-2km down the road.
I certainly hope this issue is resolved soon. I use an automatic profile manager that needs to detect WiFi connections/disconnects accurately.

I'm experiencing ongoing WiFi issues.. Mostly just signal completely dropping off randomly and inconsistent speeds. Again, I haven't tested with the "Best wifi performance" turned on.

that's exactly what that option does. starts to kill the wifi in order to improve battery life. I think it increases speed/range when the screen is on, but it's still never set to maximum power/speed.
I think we are going to have the same issues as the Rogers version. I've played with the demo unit at the Corp store several times and had wifi drop out about half of those. The signal strength was full, but that's all I know of their setup. Today I had to turn wifi off and then back on before it would even connect. It's a bummer that HTC has done such wonderful job on everything else, but we still have spotty wifi on their flagship device. I am preordering tomorrow anyway though. Hope it can be fixed with a software update down the line.

I urge anyone with Wi-Fi issues to contact HTC immediately so they can start working on a fix.

I'll test with this setting on today and see how it effects my wifi performance / battery. When I was running b/g/n on my router I did speedtests with the option both on and off and it made absolutely no difference in the speeds and the connection would still drop off. Literally right next to it my iPhone constantly got 6-8 mbps.

How is it these flagship devices have such huge issues like this? I mean do they not test this? This really upsets me and I don't even have the device. I guarantee the AT&T version will have this issue.

I remember with the dreaded HTC Sensation, wifi would often cut in and out and data speeds would be very poor. Looks like HTC's bad habits didn't die young.
AS i mentioned in previous posts. I am having the same wifi issues and i'm on my second HTC one xl. They both have poor wifi performance. I also have the problem where it sometimes stays connected when i leave the house and im 3 km's away.
Feel a little better as the International version got a new update tonight which supposedly resolves the Wi-Fi bug. So hopefully we'll get an update relatively soon.

I contacted HTC with all these bugs. Hopefully, they give me a response. If they do, i will post it here in the forums.

3G/HSPA Connectivity Issue

Hi,
My One S seems to occasionally have a few connectivity issues with 3G, I am not sure they are related to the signal issues already discussed in other threads in this forum. I have an international handset, MAO black version (has two tiny chips too, but not worth complaining about), running stock firmware, haven't done the dev unlock yet.
1) Sometimes the phone shows 'No Service', but I still have a working data connection and can make calls. Sending/receiving SMS appears not to work for some reason though. Can work around by switching into and out of airplane mode. Until I do that any SMS I compose under these conditions just pends, after the workaround they do get sent after a few minutes.
2) Sometimes something seems to go wrong with the 3G data connection, all the internet apps suddenly say they have no connection, alogcat says that DNS lookup is repeatedly failing even though I have a strong signal and 3G/HSPA connection (also tried connecting to IP addresses directly, doesn't work either). Tried getting online via Wi-Fi and it works, but all the Internet connectivity fails if I turn Wi-Fi off. If I reboot the phone it is able to get online again.
I brought this problem up in a live chat with HTC customer support and they have advised me to arrange for them to collect the phone for repair, the shop from whom I bought the phone advised the same. Just thought I would share it here and find out if it is common, or it is likely, as HTC think, there's something wrong with my phone's antennae. (My thought is that both could also be software problems)
Anyone else experience problems like this?
I get the no service thing all the time, I pull it out of my pocket and press the power button, it says no service. I am going to call t-mobile in the next few days, I am trying to collect more data. It does it on my same spot on the couch where I used to get good coverage on my old phone. It does it on the same desk at work that I used to get good reception at. It kinda sucks.

Yup, I get that and trying to get more data before sending it back to HTC. I'm not really certain but it's as if there is something wrong antennae? Seems to be quite a few with similar mobile network issues though.
I still have my old Motorola and with sim out of One S in the reception is good where the One S struggles to get a signal - if at all
I have the same issue as Kenyw:
No connection for a while although within covered area.
Strong connection bars but no internet
Usually I switch to airplane mode and back then it works...until the next time!
Very frustrating! I don't think changing the phone would solve the problem!
I have the same exact issue as the OP. Another example would be the streaming of music using Pandora and Slacker. I can listen to 1 song and skip 2 or 3 songs at best before I start having issues where it just keeps loading and I am in 4G range and 3G which shouldn't be a problem still.
Same issue here.

I did exchange my One S for another and it is just the same
It's a bit of a queer issue. I know where I live I have a good Three UK signal as per experience with the Motorola phone. I can be anywhere between 2 bars (approx 104dBm) and no signal in the house and around the yard. Yet I can walk 20 yards towards mast approx 1 mile away and as soon as I get LOS (no buildings, trees) on the mast I get full signal???
I buy my One-S a week ago in Germany and facing the same issue in Israel with Orange 3.5G network. I really don't know what to do now.

Alon,
As mentioned in many different threads opened here in XDA, the issue is related to the phone and its current software version and not to the operator/SIM/area in the world.
Stay tuned and hopefully shortly HTC will provide OTA update or root your device and install one of the custom ROMs based on the new RUU 1.70 which might be solving this issue.
Oren
Thanks,
I will keep waching the threads around waiting for solution.
I tried TrickDroid v1.0 base 1.70 but still same problem

Thanks for that Info.
You saved me the thoughts about rooting...
I'm still trying to wait for a decent s-off not related to HTC...

Noticed decreased benchmark performance on quadrant but improved battery life and system UI seems to be more fluid.

ok but more fluidity shouldn't affect cpu and I/O results!! HTC isn't doing a great job here...
