So after doing something dumb with CWM, fixing it and being back on on ED1. I am getting an error message saying Sim Card unreadable or not supported.
and ideas why?
Negative! But I am all ears...I forgot not to recover LOL. I'm in the same boat, I'm going to try n get a new sim card tomorrow

hmmm
so you used the recover too? Then fixed the brick and now no Sim Card reading?
My Sim Card wouldn't read a new one VZW tried to put in there, so its being replaced, this might be an unexpected consequence.
which package did you use to fix your phone after trying the recover tool?

Haha yea, I was so used to doing it on my Evo that it was second nature to me. I work at my local Bestbuy, so I'm sure it won't be an issue. Plus even if they found out I did root it, to them it functions perfectly I used the almost full one. But ironically it only worked for me when I didn't click on the re-partition. I went against the grain and it worked somehow!
Same thing I did, (did re-partition however), The almost one was the only one that worked for me. Then I had to flash ED1 rooted and it came up with the sim card reading error.
Interesting.

You said that after getting a new sim card it didn't work still? Did you end up rooting your new phone? We must remember not to recover!!
That is correct, a new sim card will not work, it seems to be the reader.

SIM Card - Inserting / Removing - Motorola DROID Pro (XT610)
Do not attempt to insert or remove the SIM card with the battery still installed in the device. Doing so can harm the SIM card and / or the device.
Gentlemen! You may want to check with DroidXcon on this topic.
He had the exact same problem a couple of days ago while building one of the first ROMs for the EE4 release.
There is a software solution for the "dead SIM" issue. I just don't remember who DroidXcon contacted to fix the problem, but it did get fixed by another dev.
P.S.: When you find out the solution, it would be nice to post it here.
Cheers!

I think you are talking about the read only sdcard issue with rooted kernels on EE4... I was the dev who showed him how to fix i.. But either-way its completely unrelated
Sorry - I was sure I saw DroidXCon saying that he had a problem with his SIM card not being recognized (and the SD card problem, too) a few days ago while he was on the IRC, and we were confused how loading a new ROM would affect SIM card reading.
I'm sorry for any misinformation I provided.

glad to know i'm not the only one in exactly the same situation
Unknown Baseband Version
Im no expert but i think the sim card is not being read because the phone has a unknown baseband version. Now if only we could find a way to restore that.
I've tried flashing stock ED1 ED2 EE4 and nothing
After flashing all those, everytime i checked settings>about phone>Baseband version says unkown
It would be awesome if a developer could look into this and find a fix for it if thats what the problem is.

I seem to be in the same boat. Unknown baseband version shows:

Can't connect to network as the sim card can not be read. Hoping there is a software fix.

Hi there XDA community,
I would like to know if there is an up-to-day tutorial that has working file links? I would like to upgrade, root, and unlock my Xoom. I just bought a Motorola Xoom from 1saleaday.com the Model is an MZ601 and says "approved by IDA for use in Singapore" it is currently just as is and is not unlocked or rooted. I would like to get it upgraded, unlocked, and rooted so I can use it for what I got it for. It has WiFi and Data service that supports WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, ATO_ITEM: AP1520AD3X3. It is currently running on Android Honeycomb 3.0.1, build number H.6.1-38-9. If you any ideas, files, links, tutorials (up-to-day), or can help, that would be great!
Thanks InfiniteImmortal.
P.S.
Here are the configurations;
Model Number: MZ601
Android version: 3.0.1
Firmware: GAS_ASIA_USAEVRSTURTIRD_P016
Baseband version: N_014.83.28P
Baseband configuration: UCAEVEUB1B8EU034.0R
Kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: H.6.1-38-9
More specs will be provided if they are needs, thanks again II!
yeah, there are tons of tutorials, relatively up to date. Relatively, because the new method to root xyboards might work for classic xooms too. This method would not require you to unlock your xoom for rooting and thus allow titanium backup to backup all your data before unlocking and thus wiping your xoom.

Okay I will go and read these threads, but are you for sure they work on the EU models? I have read on many different sites and threads that say the normal way of rooting, unlocking, and upgrading for US models have bricked the EU ones to were they did not work anymore. This is one reason why I'm looking for an up-to-date threads that say they work with the EU models. If you could clarify more that would be great.

Yes, the one post I have marked with "(a post by me)" is exactly how I rooted my xoom and that is a german MZ601. And it works, no brick

That is weird. I have never read a thread about a brick that occured using the method I (and others) described. Could you maybe post a link to such a thread?
To Clarify this: the Unlock should impose absolutely no risk at all as it is a feature implemented by motorola. The recovery, even if it didn't work, wouldn't lead to a brick. And the universal xoom root should not do any magic either, it should only add two files to the filesystem (su and Superuser.apk) and remove those files that would make your new shiny recovery go byebye once booted
Ty my knowledge, only the "flashing a custom rom" part is a source of bricking. And that can easily be avoided by flashing a MZ601-rom instead of something else
That said, nobody can guarantee you that this is completely safe. There is a thread right next door with a poor guy whose xoom bricked itself overnight. That was a wifi-xoom, and so far no one knows why that happened. We're still working on a solution, though

yes, you will be able to go back to the original rom and lock your bootloader again. If you do that, you will be able to get ota updates (if you really want to do so, usually custom roms are ahead of the ota-updates)
You should make a backup of your xoom right after starting the new recovery, even before rooting. That will give you a set of files that, if you restore them, will reset your xoom back to stock, thus you'll only have to re-lock your bootloader to get ota-updates

Custom ROM Files
Hey llama-power,
You say in your thread post that "If you already downloaded your new rom, put that onto the sdcard as well, it should be a flashable .zip-file".
Do you by chance have the links to these files? I know I.C.S. is the latest one, but I'm happy with an old one if it is stable. Or if you have a custom ROM for the Xoom that would be great. I have a Samsung Captivate generation 1 that I use Firefly or Cognition on, along with the original stock ROM as backup just in case. Any links or files would be very cool!

I'll try the other ones you put up, so far I have read every page on every linked thread I've come across. Lots and lots of helpful info on those as well as your pages. But if you can respond to my three earlier posts that would be helpful too. Starting to get information overload, haha.

A few more question, yes I know MORE questions! haha. Where is the backup I make stored at? I would like to put it in my backups folder for the Xoom under its drive in my computer. Currently the 3G data service is still not working on it, but is recognizing AT&T network. It says "Mobile Network State: Disconnected" just like before and suggestions? Other then that I also still don't have access to the micro SD card in Android, but can access it in the Recovery.
I now think its time for a new platform, NO more Honeycomb 3.0.1! If you have any suggestions your more than welcome to say or suggest just like for the other posts!
llama-power You ROCK!
Time for me to get some sleep! Been reading and doing Xoom stuff for hours now. I'll be on later to night to read your posts!

Wow, wasn't aware of that. But these methods are really old. The method I mentioned is the universial root-method by solarnz which is supposed to work on every 'classic' xoom (despite the family edition with its locked bootloader)

I am using the team eos nightlies. Works really nicely except deep-sleep isn't working for me while wifi is enabled. Don't know if that is a rom-issue though, might be some app I use. Anyways, it's not really a problem to me, battery life is still more than sufficient.
You can get the team EOS nightlies for your xoom (MZ601 / umts_everest / EU-3G) from this thread. Download the latest nightly build and the latest G-Apps package (thats the Google Mail, Market, etc. apps) from the link in the same thread. Put those onto your sdcard and flash them from recovery. Wipe /data, /cache and dalvik-cache first, then install the rom, then the g-apps package and finally reboot. Do not reboot between the steps. When upgrading from one nightly to another omit wiping /data.

on your sdcard: $SDCARD$/clockworkmod/backup/$DATE_AND_TIME_OF_YOUR_BACKUP$. just copy that entire folder, it contains many .img-files (one for each partition) plus another file for checksums. You will need all those files for a restore. You may, however, rename the directory.

yeah, once you flash your new rom, you should be able to access that sd-card. As stated before, you are just rooted, that gives you the power to change things but if you didn't (like installing something that is supposed to give you access to your sdcard), nothing should have changed

Yeah I kinda guessed at that one, I remembered reading about the Honeycomb 3.1.0 update giving users the ability to use the micro SD cards today. That was before I read your post. lol You might know about this, Do you know where the repository of updates are located for the Motorola Xoom 'classic' model? Just to let you know I'm using the ROM you recommended and I love it so far. As for the data service on the AT&T network it now works, after switching to the new ROM and it loaded the proper APN settings which were different from my phone. And of course with a new ROM the SD card now works as well. So my last and final question would be as stated before where can I find the oldest most up to date stock ROM?
Best regards, InternetImmortal

well, there are a couple of sources for a stock rom. For one, your sd-card should contain one (I restored my backup yesterday and yes, it even reset the recovery to stock)...
Also, motorola offers some filesystem images at http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/, but you'll need to register with them to get to the download (should be free, though)
Finally, it might be desirable to have some .sbf-file for your xoom. Those can be flashed using a software called rsd lite, even when you aren't able to enter your recovery system. Doesn't always work, so it's not more than a Hail Mary move... However, Motorola does a lot to keep these files from floating around the web, so I won't be able to provide you with a link.
As always thanks for the keen insight. Just came across a few threads that perked my interest. Have you ever tried to get working SMS text messaging and voice calling on the Xoom? Since I'm using the SIM from my phone to do the data I was hoping there might be a way. I haven't done a lot of reading on this yet but you seem to know everything.

InfiniteImmortal said:

nope. The sim inside my xoom is on the same contract as the sim in my phone and I had to pick one that would receive texts. Naturally, since I always carry my phone, that's where the texts go, so the xoom wouldn't ever receive a text ever anyways. Voice calling is currently not possible on the xoom. So the only upside of that would be that I could send texts using the xoom, but that isn't so much better than texting on my Desire HD. Plus, that would tear apart the messaging threads between my phone and the xoom.
However, there's a thread in the xoom development section where flashable zip-files are published for every eos nightly, you should be able to just flash that over your rom and thus enable texting.
Actually, I might try that some time, but right now I should really learn for that exam on friday:-/

when i put it back in an reboot it says "searching for service" and "everything i screenshotted... the imei is what i inputed with the tool in the imei tool thread you guys gave me...
however my wifi does work and my rom boots just fine... and when i factory reset my number shows up in the MDN field...
it honestly seems like the way the phone would communicate with the towers is screwed.

Have you tried factory resetting using the dialer code on a stock ROM? I had the same issue even after I ODINd back to stock until I used the code.

[Tool][Win] Repair IMEI & Roaming ERI issues
If you didn't back up your IMEI info prior to flashing ROM's. no one else can be blamed. Always read every post before trying anything.

Alright, this just comes off as being a jerk. It sounds like he did (try to) backup his IMEI. Also, I don't see him blaming anyone for his "mishap". He was also very polite in asking for help. So was there a need in being a jerk(not just directed at you, as you were one of 3 or so to act as if he was wrong here)? I mean isn't the community here to help people? I could understand if he said ......OMG, I brickated my fone.....I hate you guys, you borked my phone.......But he did neither of those. It sounds like he read the guide, and still something got screwed up along the way. It happens. But there really isn't a need for posts like this.
Does anyone have a fix to help me???
My Phone detects no service at all... zero bars....
the wifi works, the bluetooth, pretty much the whole rom.
I just flashed the VRALF ROM directly from samsung and still nothing...
My IMEI and ICCID are there...My MEID is also there (dec and hex)
My PRL version is there... still no ERI
It says the signal strength is -120 dBM 99 asu
My Android Version is 4.0.4 at the moment
Baseband: I535VRLF2
Kernel: 3.0.8-618049-user [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jun 15 07:53:02 KST 2012
Build Number: IMM76D.I535VRALF2
Hardware Version: I535.10
Ok guys I managed to get my phone to make and receive calls and sms...... but my roaming indicator keeps flashing all the time and i have no data at all....
Any ideas... I'm in a better boat than i was... haha
This owner had a similar problem, perhaps - they fixed the IMEI and related issues as described in a helpful link and their followup post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984608&highlight=imei
You might consider taking the suggested link within that thread, then doing what the original poster did to restore their phone's configuration and see if that helps get out of roaming.

Its all fixed... thanks to everyone who helped...
Check out the thread "Comprehensive IMEI Backup" in the android dev section for complete, 100% security in flashing. Its imperative that new users view this thread before flashing anything. No idea why its not stickied or made apparent in the rooting guides.

What did you end up doing to fix it. Just for future reference.
Till now i haven't faced any issues on my desire s, but today i faced a weird problem. I was normally using it when it got warm so i decided to restart it. After restarting i got the message "insert sim card". I have been trying to solve this issue from last 2-3 hrs but no luck till now. Plz help guys.
Take out battery, sim and sdcard for hour n so .
And try.
If still no luck then wipe data format all except sdcard.
Reflash ROM that will probably solve your problem.

Which rom have u tried?
Have you tried a different sim card?
could be that there is dirt on the points that touches the sim, try wiping it.
Shouldn't be a rom issue if indeed u tried different roms.

First of all thanks a lot for replying.
I've tried many roms. Currently running latest official ICS ruu. I also believe there there be the issue with sim slot points. I tried opening the phone but sim slot is not getting exposed. Please can you suggest me how to do it?

Here's a youtube video of how to take the phone apart.
Have you tried different sim card? could be a damage sim card.
Thanks for the video link.
I am stuck at 02:55(removing flex cable connectors). Don't have the tool, will bring it from the market tomorrow. Meanwhile i have doubt whether i'll be able to easily reassemble it
Hello,
I just downloaded the update to 44s.
After successful flash, it didn't ask me for a PIN after boot. I flashed using "reboot -> go to recovery".
Additionally, it says "invalid sim" and doesn't connect to any cellular network.
I am in Germany, using the stock firmware before (it was up to date, but not the 44s).
What can I do now? What was going wrong?
Thanks.
Update: I flashed cm-bacon-ac1ccf7921-to-5fa8c79c0b-signed.zip
I went back to stock, but the problem persists...
You probably lost your imei.
So in my phone's info, there is an IMEI. The IMEI SV is 00, that looks strange.
But in fact, the sim card is not working in my Galaxy S3 now anymore.
Please help
David.
That should tell you that it's possibly the SIM card that's the problem.

I made sure now, after trying and trying...
Different sim works in the opo.
Sim from opo doesn't work in huawai surf stick, nor the galaxy s3.
So I have a problem I never had: a broken sim card.
So all I did this evening was because of this.
Thanks for any help, this forum is so nice.
David.

It's a bug that's affected quite a few OPO owners.

timmaaa,
Hardware of software type of bug? If it's software, then couldn't/wouldn't there be a way to correct that?
Are you aware of any way to trigger the IMEI loss? I'm just starting to mess about with 3 OP's and I sure do not want to run into any issues.
Basically I unlocked and rooted an OP, set it up, TWRP'd it, and backed it up via TWRP. Then took that backup and copied it to another OP with basic unlock, rooted & TWRP'ed phone, and restored it to that phone. All seems to be working fine on both phones. Soon to do a third. If the IMEI is software stored I can see that screwing things up.

It's firmware related. There are threads discussing how to fix it in the q&a section. It happens randomly as far as I know.
I don't believe the IMEI is carried across unless you're reporting an EFS partition from another device, but there's one way to know for sure, compare the IMEI's on the original device and the second one that you restored the backup on.

so David, another question not related. If you forget the problems that you had with the SIM, is the OPO working fine on 44 now?
I am running 38 atm.
Actually I was happy to have it back, running at midnight
If I update, I will tell you.
David.

Thanks for the details.
I didn't use it very much since the update, but for now, zooming with 2 fingers works, which was broken before.
David.
It just stop working few day's ago, can't make it work with any sim card anymore. It all happens at 6.0.1. I tried to install 5.0.1. with no luck there, and 4.4.4. that didn't work either but at least at 4.4.4. I could mess a little bit with finding carrier at settings , with 6.0.1 and 5.0.1. it is faded in setting menu. Will get ss here. I am sorry for my English, if there is anyone with any idea there to help I would be very grateful. :crying:
If clean flash doesnt help, probably your sim tray is broken. You can try flashing latest radio from factory images. Maybe that could help :/
