I have a themed facebook app, and I want to have the official one to do something since it is a little hard to see things with this theme. The apps are seen to be the same by the phone.
Is there a way I can have both apps installed at the same time? If I renamed the current app would it still work?
While its not a direct answer... whats the worst that could happen? Try it.
I have tried, and searched, which is how I know the phone thinks it I the same app
I have a themed Black transparent Facebook and also have original facebook installed. Both work together. I found that the themed facebook limits the characters typed on my posts unlike the original.

Th problem with mine is that it when trying to install the second one, it just tries to replace the first
The problem is both app have the same packagename (i think com.facebook.katana), the filename itself doesnt matter. Unless you change the packagename of one, you cant install both.
To do this you will have to decompile the app, change the packagename in the androidmanifest.xml and everywhere else and recompile. But this will most likely break functionality.
If I did decompile it, how could I make sure it worked?
You compile it and reinstall it.
Though im pretty sure it won't work as there will be problems with the generated resources in the .apk
What if I changed the name in the resources as well?
package, version, and titles
you must have individual package name, version number, and title for the app to be considered different by your phone.
Sounds like good fun. I will get on this

As long as the packagename is different apps can have the same name and version number...
Alright I will try changing it soon

PLEASE NOTE: I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS APP, I JUST "TRANSLATED" IT TO ENGLISH
I've been trying to replace 3d gallery and have stumbled upon a great 2d gallery, unfortunately for me it was in Chinese, I read the instructions on the first page of miui translation forum thread and have translated it to English and actually compiled the app without any errors(to my surprise ). but when i replace the app on the phone i still get the original version that opens up(Chinese one).
I spend 2 good hours translating it, and really hate coming up short
can some one tell me what i am doing wrong? I'm attaching the Chinese version and the English version
there are the translation instructions:

UPDATE: A kind member of XDA community has signed the app
Have you tried replacing the .apk in /system/app via root explorer or adb?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
its not a system app. it just a regular apk. eventually i want to replace the 3d galley so this one woudl open up from the camera
i could not even get it to install. wont install normally, and copied to /data/app and it doesnt show up
tried to install with adb and it gave a certificate error
this is because you didnt sign the translated apk
http://www.londatiga.net/it/how-to-sign-apk-zip-files/
shows you how to do that
if you modify an apk, it must be signed before your phone will use it
ive signed it and its installed, and working, in english
my guess is that you didnt remove the untranslated version before trying your new one, make sure you remove it first
good work btw, great find
also, this isnt aosp is it? i was thinking the icon more resembled miui, which would make sense if it was in chinese

THANK YOU !!!!! nice to see my work didnt go to waste , in the thread it said i can do it without signing it so that what i did.
as far as i know, all apk's must be signed for android to use them (with the exception of framework-res.apk)
also, you should change the thread name to something else and put a signed version on the first thread so others dont get confused

changed. you wouldn't happen to know how to link this app through the camera? so when i click on the gallery from there it would open this app. i assume there is a pointeer somewhere in the camera.apk...
what do i look like? a programmer?
actually, no i have no idea. i would expect if you decompiled Camera.apk you can find it by digging through the code
(use smali/baksmali to accomplish the decompile)
but i am not well versed in programming, so i wouldnt know where to begin
crutoi,
great find! love this gallery. so much easier and faster. better organized. when you find the link to the camera, let us know. until then, i'm a happy camper! Thanks!

First and foremost thank you for translating the application. The application loads our media gallery really fast, it blows 3D gallery out of the water.
Feedback:
-Some of the cataloging is redundant,
-Thumb image quality is not the best,
-The icon could be nicer,
-No Picasa support.

In my opinion the orange on the Blur News Widget looks very odd against the blue Gingerbread notification bar.
So I thought I could take it upon myself to change that, and in my attempt to change the color I always run into the same issue, the issue "stretch" correctly.
I did the following:
1. Pulled the APK from my DROID X
2. unzipped it with APK Manager
3. Made my changes to the specific images
4. Edited it with draw9patch (Tried NOT doing this also)
5. Zipped the APK.
6. ADB push NewsWidget.APK /system/app/NewsWidget.apk
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Just the top bar on the widget.
I edited orange_sleeve_horiz.9.png, and orange_sleeve_vert.9.png.
I tried editing both in draw9patch, to no avail.
I hope someone can figure this out soon. I'm still having no luck >_<

I can tell by looking at your edited pngs that you only passed them through drawpatch9 and didn't run them through eclipse or xUltimate afterward, that's why they are not stretching properly; I also noticed that you didn't properly draw the lines on the vertical png because it was giving errors.
Try this: http://www.mediafire.com/?a5soknd0381k1xp
Hopefully it works like you want
I can't test it out because I am running ApeX 2.0 Alpha 2, and the NewsWidget doesn't work (most likely missing other apks that NewsWidget requires to work properly).

Thanks! The image looks great!
The only issue with it now is that RSS icon and the 'widget name' displays incorrectly.
Also, would you mind explaining what Eclipse and xUltimate has to do with it, for my own future reference? ^_^
P.S. Thanks so much =D
Modified newswidget.apk
I also ran into the initial problem of the stretching. After I fixed that, I also noticed the position settings of the RSS Icon and "News" word to be out of place.
So I thought it was something I had messed up. I restored the original newswidget.apk and everything was fixed (except I was back to the orange bars).
I borrowed the modified apk from bouchigo, removed the files
orange_sleeve_horiz.9.png
orange_sleeve_vert.9.png
and I used Ninjamorph to put them into the stock newswidget.apk. And even then I had the same problem of offset RSS icon and "news".
I also used bouchigo's newswidget.apk as a whole but even that had the same RSS / "News" offset issue.
Sorry to bring up a slightly older thread.

Here it is, along with a screenshot:
To install adb push the NewsWidget.apk to /system/app/NewsWidget.apk
Code:
adb push NewsWidgetBLUE.apk /system/app/NewsWidget.apk
if you get an error about read/write permissions then use:
Code:
adb remount
In later time I will open a new NewsWidget themeing thread and also upload a flashable zip.
The issue, I believe, is that when running the image through Draw9Patch the bottom border wasn't drawn correctly, which forced the RSS icon and name space to be pushed to the side.
Also, instead on simply unzipping the apk, I decompiled it and made my edits. Which fixed the issues I was having.

k whatever it is i know there is an icon in the app drawer for it. For some reason it does not show up on TMOUS roms, only seen it on the EU ones. It was also on every other sense rom for every android phone i've had, as well as the people icon. I wonder why TMO decided to delete it...
I assume the people icon i'm looking for is not an APK either, do you know anything about that one? Thanks.

Do you hate launcher spam? I do. If you prefer to have an uncluttered app drawer with only one icon instead of three, here is the latest version of Google Maps with a modified AndroidManifest.xml. Of course, all the missing shortcuts are still accessible within the app, nothing has changed except that I removed the intent-filter declarations that created the extra icons.
This app was tested on my SE Xperia Ray, which runs the official Gingerbread ROM.

Probably! All I did was decompile the apk with apktool, remove a few lines in AndroidManifest.xml and compile again.
But I guess the process is the same for the modded Google Maps app you're talking about, and it's pretty much straightforward if you know what you're looking for. The lines you need to remove in AndroidManifest.xml look like this:
Code:
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
You will probably have to remove three of the four occurences of the above code, one for each unwanted icon. You can figure out which three by checking out the icon declaration that precedes the aforementioned code. If the icon's name includes the words latitude, places or navigation, you're good to remove this instance. If I recall correctly, the first instance is the one you will need to leave intact (btw, I used Notepad++ for the editing).

Yep, the icons are still there. It's funny that in the "What's New" section Facebook states that they've updated the icons based on user feedback. I've been checking out the app comments every now and then for the past few days and, honestly, there are hundreds of users complaining that they simply don't want those extra icons. At all. Then a few said that the icons were misleading, as they did not clearly state that they were Facebook shortcuts. And there you have it, Facebook updated the icons, adding a small Facebook badge to make them distinguishable. Pretty selective listening, don't you think?
Anyway, this mod still works and it will probably stay this way, unless Facebook decides to use a customized compiler that apktool can't handle. I updated the OP with RapidShare and MediaFire links for the new version.
Thanks! Yeah they chose to listen to a comment about making the icons distinguishable but failed to listen to the prob hundreds that didn't wasn't them there in the first place..... strange place this world is.....
Anyway thank you again for the reply and most importantly the patch!

Hmm. Are you talking about Facebook or Maps? Or both? I haven't used CM ever since I got rid of my old ZTE, so I can't test it myself. One thing I know for sure is that you can't overwrite the original app with the modded version. You have to completely uninstall it first (this probably requires some extra steps if it's a system app). But if you've done that and the modded version still refuses to install, I guess I'm out of suggestions... Still though, it's frustrating, because these apps don't depend on any specific frameworks.

Maybe you're looking at methods of installing fonts into the main system for customizing the look of your phone whereas I'm talking about the available fonts inside an app such as MS word, though maybe they are tied together? IDK, but so far I've not found any way to change my system font except for a particular app which I was able to take this custom font I have in question and apply it to my phone but that didn't add to the available fonts in my word application. I've been looking all over the place, seems like I'm the only person trying to do this.
