[Q] Alternative launchers laggy ? - HTC Sensation

Hello everyone
I wanted to try launcherpro and ADWLauncher on my sensation but I noticed that LP appdrawer was laggy when opening.
About adw, that was the scrolling in the appdrawer that was stuttering.
I had the Desire S and it was the same. Is it because of Sense ? Is there any way to fix that ?
Thanks

Hmm mine is opening really smooth and scrolling is too. I'm using ADWLauncher Ex, and set the app drawer to Vertical New. It's really nice that way, even on my gf's SE X10..

It must be a problem with Launcher Pro. It's very laggy on Galaxy S2 too.

Maybe it's because of 2.3.3 ?
Anyway, Go Launcher Ex and ADW Launcher EX are smooth on my Sensation while ADW Launcher (standard) and LP are laggy.
So I'll use Go Launcher

If you like stock android. The gingerbread launcher runs smooth on every phone I've tried it on.

Running launcher pro and it runs very smooth for me

running adw launcher ex, having few lags at times when sliding between screens. Otherwise app drawer smooth as butter.
edit: actually lag is only when using expose or pressing home to return to main screen.

Hello,
Same here with ADW, very laggy on my Sensation, was really smooth on my Nexus One...

So those with alternative launchers like LP pro, or ADW, can you end task the sense launcher? does that free up a lot more ram?

Same situation for me as well, ADW was super laggy when sliding between pages in drawer. Launcherpro was fine for me, golauncher is buttery smooth and I've been using it now as my daily launcher. Launcher 7 is also buttery smooth if anyone wonders.

could you please tell me if it is possible to have transparent text background for icons with golauncher? Thanks

I plan on installing an alternative launcher.
- Can you still use the cool Sense 3.0 widgets like Friendsstream, etc.?
- Is the dialing app still the htc-sense one with smart dialing?

Try GOlauncher. Quick, responsive and very customizable

No, you won't be able to use the Sense widgets. You might find launchers with Sense-like widgets, but the official ones are on the Sense UI only

I've tried digging through the settings for icons, the only available ones are options to hide the icon label. You may have just to try it out yourself, just to make sure.

[Q] Stock Launcher smoother than Launcher Pro

I just got the Nexus S. Before installing CM 7 i tried out the stock launcher with a live wallpaper running. I was surprised at how smooth it was and that it had a very nice way of scrolling through the app drawer. After installing CM7 and launcher pro plus i noticed that opening the app drawer wasn't as smooth with a live wallpaper running and it didn't have the nice way of scrolling. Launcher pro has many more features but the stock did have that smoothness. Is there anyway to get this on launcher pro?
You could try playing with the settings and see if you can normalize it.
There are other alternatives to launchers if you like.
ADW Launcher EX (Paid), ADW Launcher (Free), GO Launcher EX, and more.

not sure what you mean by normailzing. also i would like to use launcher pro only. thanks!
Launcher pro is almost always smoother than stock launcher. But with live wallpaper I know what you mean with the choppy app drawer. Only solution is use static wallpaper instead.
damn that sucks..thanks anyways
The only launcher where the app drawer stays smooth with a live wallpaper selected is the stock launcher, all the other ones get choppy.

Here is a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933517 it's a zip that removes adw and add stock launcher
Stock launcher is the only one that can use hardware acceleration therefore it will always be faster/smoother than any 3rd party launcher.
with the exception of UD Launcher which was used in nscollab for only two releases. Loved it because it was just as smooth and basically the same as the stock launcher but gave you more home-screens and a 5 button dock option and saved a lot of battery even!!!
But then again I guess it is based directly on the stock launcher - at least that'd be my guess.

yes it does, only on the nexus s so far with gingerbread. other phones it is powered by the CPU like normal. i guess google wanted to take advantage of the nexus s powerful hardware. just wish they did it for the rest of the phone, like the web browser, etc.
Yes that's true. Stock Launcher is smoother than ADW, ADW EX and LauncherPro.
I realized that a few weeks ago.
How do i enable the stock launcher? I downloaded Gingerbread Launcher from the market? is that the same thing?

Waited for update... still laggy

hi,
i waited for the ota update ... 1.35 .. hoped it would speed up the phone couse appdrawer and sense homescreen was laggy as hell... with this update just the drawer got a speed update.. its a little smoother now... but homescreen sucks...
do you know some apps or settings that could speed it up ?? i saw a video from evo 3d and it was smoother in the video! why is that ??
can anyone help me ??
ADW Launcher EX, it's 1000 times better than the Sense Launcher and does NOT lag at all.
But i want my Sense widgets!

I beg to differ on this one cause all the launcher are laggy as hell now ADW, Launcherpro, and Go Launcher EX. I dont know why but its really pissing me off :-(
i cant live without my sense widgets so i cant use any launcher apps ...
so there is only one solution i think !?!?!
on windows mobile there were ways to tweak image cache and icon cache and stuff like that ... is this possible for sense too ???
or increase the framerate on homescreen somehow ???
Maybe there is a way to install Sense 2.x launcher? I doubt it but maybe it's possible.
Probably you will have to wait until we get S-Off. Like everyone else.

No lag on ADW here. Not really too much on Sense either...
can i use adw launcher and sense with carusel effect ??
Nope, you can't combine launchers.
From what I've noticed on mine, Launcher pro lags when opening the app drawer. Adw launcher ex is alright, go launcher is alright. I don't think most of the third party launchers are not supported for the qHD resolution but I could be wrong.

[Q]How is ADW Launcher on your Note?

Been looking for a launcher(still am actually) because I didn't really like the stock version. I tried ADW but for some reason it's quite laggy on my Galaxy Note. FYI, I only have 3-4 widgets at most and mainly shortcuts.
Try adw ex.. No lags for me..
Or change the transition

I actually have ADW EX installed and its really laggy for me..is there anything u did to make it smooth?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I'm on adw ex as well and it's inconsistent. Sometimes dog slow, sometimes nice and snappy. I use it mainly for functionality, and the lag is no more than mildly annoying.
I've used ADW ex on my Galaxy S, my S2 and my note. Always loved it. Just recently switched to Go launcher ex. Almost like it better. It has a couple of neat features that ADW doesnt have. But ADW was never laggy for me....
I changed the homescreen transition to zoom.. It's silky smooth. The default cube is laggy
And I removed the bounce
Then it is as smooth as tw, if not more smooth

If your Note isn't rooted almost all other Launchers will lag. The more widgets you have, the more lag. I think it's an issue with the Rom.

Rooting or not will not affect the launchers whether they lag or not.
It's whether hardware acceleration is being used for the launcher. Tw is hardware accelerated by default. Adw is partially hardware accelerated

Go launcher for me. Silky smooth in 240 dpi.

If you want ADW is clean, you must disable the cache scroll in preference system.
davfunk,
I was using the low quality cache to smooth the transitions (but it was still a bit laggy) but moving to non made my ADW Launcher EX as smooth as TW Launcher if not moother.
Just perfect!!!!!!

I have completely disable the cache.
I use GO launcher.
I used to use ADW EX but find GO Launcher mire advanced.
Lets say you have a contact shortcut on your main screen, tapping it calls person X, you can use GO launcher to ads a gesture command. So if you swipe up OM that same shortcut it'll do something else. I have it set so that it'll open that contact's chat window in what'sup.
Tapping calls, swipe up chats. Isn't that amazing and convenient.
CorruptedSanity,
I used GO Launcher for almost a year on my Desire HD, but when I moved to the Note, it was not as smooth as ADW Launcher EX.
Go Launcher has amazing features sur as dockbar icon swipe to launch actions, integrated plugins and so on that you need to find replacement for when using ADW Launcher but if you stick with a laggy launcher (as I use a lot of scrolling widgets), it ruins everything.
So now, with no cache set in config, I can swear that ADW Launcher EX is probably the best launcher for Note in terms of smoothness (and I tried a lot, including 360 Launcher, before writing that).
I use ADW with an HD2, a DHD and the Note because with GO Launcher it is not possible to hide the status bar.

Go to ADW Settings and switch the Cache to Low Quality.
Edit: Sorry, didn't see the posts above mine. :/
I have tried LOTS of launchers but keep coming back to ADW EX.
I finally have it running really nicely. I leave the cache on auto but do unclick scrolling wallpaper.
Wee demo:

I keep using the GO Launcher after testing a lot of other launchers.
I made the experiance that the GO Launcher is the best at all. Its smooth and very easy to handle.
Greetz
ADW EX works perfectly here. No lag at all. I'm using 240 DPI.

Something better than stock ICS Launcher....

Ok ICS stock launcher is better than HC...but i'm looking for some better.
Any suggest?
I used to have ADW Launcher. Today i discovered Apex Launcher, which is basically the stock launcher with added features. It's mega smooth and stable, and free

I just started using ADW Launcher EX, paid the $3.00 for it, and love it so far but haven't even begun to scratch the surface...
Apex Launcher. Best ICS launcher hands down.
Nova launcher has been pretty sweet so far, similar to stock which I like with added features. Silky smooth, not too many transitions though.

Nova Launcher is available in the Android Marketplace?
At present I'm using Nova on both the TF-101 and the SG2. Liking it (esp the ability to save the configuration).
I do have ADW EX (got it on the US$0.10 sale) but have never actually used it.
Have heard good things about Apex Launcher though.
And then there is always Go Launcher....
Oh, and yes, Nova is available in the Market.
Adw Launcher Ex
highest level of customization
Not ICS exclusive (not sure if it affects performance on ICS)
the only launcher I know that can handle HD live wallpapers without scrolling lag.
Doesn't show widgets in app drawer
Apex
ICS exclusive
decent amount of customization
can't customize folder icons
icon labels disappear if you set desktop grid rows to 8 or higher
Shows downloaded apps and widgets in app drawer if rooted and the launcher is installed as a system app
Nova
ICS exclusive
less customization options than the other 2
can customize folder icons
icon labels disappear if you set desktop grid rows to 8 or higher
background for app drawer is black. Can't make it show the wallpaper
most simple and easiest to set up out of the 3
Shows widgets in app drawer if rooted. Doesn't require installation as a system app
I used ADW on honeycomb. Now I am using Nova. It would be perfect for me if I could remove the black background in app drawer. I tried apex and it felt too much like a beta, which it is. I will most likely switch to apex when it matures.

ADW looks slow.
Tonight i'll try Nova vs. Apex
Using ADW EX right now. I like to keep my home screen to a minimum and since titles me maximize the screen I can put the widgets and app shortcut I need all in one screen. Also it lets me change the drawer background with I set to about 60% transparent.
On my nexus I use Nova.
Sent from my Transformer TF101
Noticed a problem with Nova. When you shift the tablet to portrait the screen real estate is not so great and you lose a lot of space at the bottom and top.
I know you can change the row amount, but anything over 8 and when in landscape you don't get the app name showing up or the widget is slightly cut off.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Nova for me!
using it for a while now and it's smooth as butter, but i read good things about apax too, you should try them both and decide what works for you
I use apex, it's the best.
Wysłane z mojego GT-I9100
When i originally tried Apex i didn't like it. I gave it another go but this time pushed out to system/app instead of just installing as a regular app. Seems to work much better for me that way.
In apex I change the change screen method to cube. This is very smooth in portrait.

Best Launcher for HOX

I don't plan on rooting my phone until I feel like the phone has had a bit of time to establish itself.
What are some suggestions for a good launcher that works on ICS devices?
I've tried Nova and Apex so far, both are "stock-looking" ICS launchers. Neither are as smooth as the default Sense launcher.
That slight, almost imperceptible jittering as you scroll between home screens just kills the experience, IMO.
May just stick to sense for a while then..

Really? I thought the stock Sense launcher was terribly laggy. For example, if you haven't used your app drawer in a while, it takes one to two seconds to pop up.
Nova and Apex are extremely smooth.

Blame the app priority handling for that launch delay.
Nova is, imo, the best ICS launcher. i tried Apex and used it for a good while until the animations for opening the app drawer became extremely laggly. never had this problem with Nova.
I am coming from a Galaxy Nexus so I am used to stock 4.0. I just couldn't do the stock Sense Launcher, it wasn't terrible but I just wanted what I was used to. I used Nova Launcher (my first experience) and I am using Widget Locker as the lock screen. Ahhhh, much better. I also switched to the Stock ICS keyboard. Here are some Screen Shots.
First thing I did when I got my HOX today is go install Go Launcher EX. Sadly, it doesn't appear that Go Launcher EX has been updated for ICS yet, so it has the menu button at the bottom of the screen... yuck!
Guess I'll give these two (Apex, Nova) launchers a try and see how they work out. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to give Sense a try either...

You use "Chrome", I thought I try it myself but one of reasons in the past I loved Android was the ability to run Flash.
I use Nova Launcher.
Found the Stock Launcher was lagged, but Nova runs only on ICS+ the pro version for a few dollars asks for no permissions at all.
The pro version allows me to hide shortcuts to Rogers Bloatware.

The clock on the lock screen is part of WidgetLocker. The clock on the Launcher is Simi Clock Widget. I have played around a little more and have this thing looking almost stock (minus the menu bar).
Nevermind, had an issue with live wallpapers not working. Restarting fixed it.

Would be very cool if we can use the Nova launcher or Apex launcher with Sense widgets. Any way to make those work together ?
As far as I know it can't be done, but search for Android Pro Widgets in the Android Market and it's pretty cool - can be themed too.
Nova Launcher is what i was using before on my GNex. finally got it set up the same on the HOX and it runs smoother. before when i'd be on another page except the homescreen and hit the home button, there would be a little stutter happening at least 1 out of every two times. this never happens on the HOX. ever. smooth as butter. very happy with my setup now
