I'm very new to this stuff and I rooted my Nexus S just last night. I'm on Netarchy kernel now and I want to know if I can return to stock kernel without losing all data? Also, what should I do when Google releases a new version and I want to update? If I update will I lose root? Will the bootloader re-lock?
I'm really afraid of bricking my phone so I want to clear up all my confusions
Thanks.

OK so I've got root but I'm not sure at what point do you lose the ability to receive updates from Asus? Can I flash CWM and still receive updates? Or is it only if you flash custom ROM?
Are you able to flash OC kernal and still get OTA?
Just don't want to lose functionality and updates with this being such a new product.
Thanks guys!
you need stock recovey for the ota updates to work correctly...so if you have cwm, it's best you turn off updates. updadtes will also cause you to break root.
don't worry about missing out on updates though. the devs typically get the updates merged into their custom roms quickly enough (typically 1-2 days). and if you're rooted but stock, typically, those come even sooner. you'll probably miss out on 1/2 to a day or so of "i got the newest update" gloating, but IMO, it's worth it with all the benefits of rooting.

Hello all,
My Photon Q is rooted with the stock ICS ROM. I'd like to update it to at least JB cause I have a few apps that require 4.1. I've been away from the mod company for a while - what's the best way to update while keeping my current apps and settings? I have an OTA pending, if it would be easier to unroot, update via OTA, and root back (but not sure if unroofing would factory reset the phone).
Thanks for any and all help!

Unrooting doesn't reset the phone, but for safety, make a full nandroid backup of your phone's current state via recovery.

Thanks!
My Nexus 5 is on 4.4.4 (was wating for first Lolipop update with some of the bugs fixed before updating.) It's rooted with TWRP. So I can't perform a stock OTA. I rarely mess with the ROM/Recovery/Bootloader so each time a major update comes out, by that time I forgot what to do. I know there are instructions out there but it's a bit scarey not knowing for sure if they are the right ones for my particular situation.
Essentially I want the easiest+safewest way to get from 4.4.4 rooted to 5.0.1. I don't mind going back to fully stock if that is the easiest+safest route. I can root again later down the road if I need to (not really making use of any apps that I can't live without that need root and having stock OTA would be simpler in the future.) If I have to lose all apps/data, so be it, but I'd obviously prefer not. I found these instructions, but they are going from 5.0.0 to 5.0.1

If anyone can throw me a bone, I'd be grateful.
Thanks

Just use the Google flash all bat file. Just backup everything to pc first
There is no need to go back to stock if you don't want to.

Hi at risk of been repetitive im going to ask something that might have already been answerd on the the forum but given the specific caracteristic of my device i hope someone can answer anyway
Thing is i have a rooted nexus five (6.0.1 Stock ROM) with Ek kernel and I was wondering if i could unroot through the SuperSu menu without losing any data and keeping the custom kernel just so i could install the lastest OTA update and encrypt my phone. It seems i would have to flash stock boot.img to encrypt but i dont know if this is enough to update and encrypt without losing custom kernel and data in the process as I pretend to inmediatly root after doing these two things. Also if anyone can recommend a good alternate kernel for perfomance/battery life just in case there is a better option although i have to say im very happy with this one.
Hope this particular question hasnt being answerd before and any help would be aprecciated
Thank you very much
Hi guys,
I have a Xperia Z5 running on Android 5.1.1, rooted but completely stock otherwise. The phone has been pestering me about the software update for a while now, but I've been putting it off.
I assume I cannot just use the OTA update to update a rooted phone, while keeping root, is that correct? If this is the case, how do I go about getting a newer version of Android on plus rooted? Is there any special steps I need to take to do this coming from a rooted phone as a base?
What about the DRM keys, there seems to be some new method of dealing with that while keeping X-reality and camera improvements, can I still do that even though I used the earlier workaround for the loss of DRM keys when flashing? (it was sometime like Dec. 2015 I rooted it, my memory on the process is rusty)
Finally, did anyone ever get Xposed working on this model of phone, coming from my Galaxy the one thing I really miss was the Youtube Adblocker module for Xposed, if I could get that back I'd love it!
I did have a search around for information on this, but most of the threads assume you're starting from a stock phone as a base, not a rooted phone, and I was not sure if the new DRM workaround was compatible with the other one... I'd like to not do something I shouldn't have and end up bricking the thing!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
flash latest marshmallow 32.2.A.5.11 and flash patched stock and flash supersu sr5 2.78 in twrp and you are good to go
Thanks mate, nothing to worry about then really?

nothing to worry about, plus patched kernel has all drm fixes so xreality, etc.. works
