I've tried researching this and the only solution I found for checking my hotmail account, which just happens to be my #1 email account I use, is by either setting it up as an email account, which wouldn't work well for me because I use alot of folders, or by using it through the internet interface just by hyperlink, which doesn't work too well for me because of the size. Is Microsoft intentionally ignoring a huge market just because it's a competing OS or is there anything on the horizon about a hotmail/windows live mail app for Android coming down the pipe?
No idea about M$ intentions. Anyway, unless a service offers IMAP access, I would not touch it with 10ft pole, let alone use it as primary email. WLM uses MAPI crappy Exchange protocol, enough said.
Forward the mail to somewhere else where you can access it via IMAP.

You should be able to set it up as an exchange activesync account. It is fairly new and not widely known that you can do it that way. You will need to select corporate sync with manual setup. Use the following settings:
Username: full email address
Domain - leave blank
Server: m.hotmail.com
That should set it up with full push notifications and folder sync. It doesn't work on every android device but should on most.

Why has it taken so long for them to offer an exchange server protocol for hotmail for windows mobile??!! Well finally I think it is happening with the new role out of Live Wave 4.
I Have searched the forums for this new development and have not seen anything here.
The closest I have got to getting direct push mail for hotmail is currently is by two ways.
Either through the Windows Live client and selecting as items arrive under options (which can be really slow - hit and miss)
or forwarding your hotmail to another provider that offers this service. I use to have mail2web until it became a pay only service. I then switched to Googlemail (gmail) which does offer this for free. (although this can have its issues - email forwarding is slow etc)
(Nothing new there!)
The good news is that with the role out of the new Windows Hotmail (live wave 4) there should be.
There are a number of links that confirm it and other if you google it:
http://windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?threadid=6f0d7425-bdf5-4c35-8a77-7db66495ed75&page=4
http://www.liveside.net/main/archive/2010/06/15/exchange-activesync-and-more-on-hotmail-rollout.aspx
Has anyone been lucky enough to test this or have any further details on setup be leaked?
I think it would be interesting to see what people think of this as it is implemented. It due anytime.....
They shut it down again!!!
This is sad as I need it for Android, unlike Windows Mobile's client, Windows Live has push capabilities.
it's working again as of yesterday.
What setting are you using?
It's being rolled out gradually. Be patient. (or buy a windows mobile phone) It has worked on 6.5 for some time.
The settings I have used for push mail via active sync are:
Email: [email protected] or [email protected]
Server: m.hotmail.com
SSL: Enabled
Username: @live.com or hotmail.com
Password: password
have configured hd2 to these to test if this works on activesync and via android. No Success...
so, i had a hotmail account set up on my htc mail app. mail came through with no problems, but any actions i took on the device didnt get reflected on the server. so if i read/deleted mail on the device, i had to do the same on the web inbox.
i switched to k-9 mail which now deletes mail on the server, but doesnt mark the mail as read once i've read it. something which i do quite often as i use my hotmail for online purchases, and i want to read an invoice but keep it for reference.
does anyone know an app that allows mail thats read on the device to be marked as read on the server?
muchos gracias!
anyone?

My wife has a blackberry and uses hotmail also. I believe the problem lies in the difference between POP3/IMAP. Hotmail connects via POP3 and from what I gather that protocol doesn't involve much more than basically forwarding the messages to your phone. While IMAP (which Gmail is capable of using) allows the syncing of deleted items\read items\etc.

I had a blackberry before my android and was able to read and delete mail, mark mail as unread etc and it would be reflected in my hotmail inbox. its really frustrating as having the blackberry allowed me to manage my inbox completely without having to log into my hotmail and now i feel like im going backwards

Try this:
Setup a new account.
In the first screen, where you write your name and password, hit manual setup. In the next screen, select the last option (Exchange ActiveSync).
In the details put:
Server: m.hotmail.com
Username: your email eg. [email protected]
Domain: leave this blank
SSL: Enable this/use always
Certificate: SSL
It has some additional settings (sync contacts, calendars, etc.), select as needed.
Began testing last weekend after seeing this post. http://androidcommunity.com/forums/349480-post18.html
E-Mail is working good so far, have not used contacts and calendar sync. It pushes messages and syncs them both ways when necessary.

so so close!
firstly, thanks for the tip. it seems to be working, but the only issue is that it has constant sync failures. i've only had it up for half an hour or so and have been testing it out, and when it works - it works well. but the syncing issue could be a deal breaker if its not an time-isolated issue. so far i've had to manually instigate the sync when i know theres new mail, or i want to push changes back to the server.
will give it a few days and see. if its still buggy i dont see spending 12 quid on it as getting value for money.
Weird... It's been working perfect so far, maybe it has to do with the OS version you have on your device, I have Cyanogen's 6.1 RC1, Android 2.2.1. Anyway I was looking for a product called Exchange for Android 2.x, but it's $20 and this is not an urgent need for me.
BTW, why you need to expend $12 on this, it's free as far as I can tell
I've been doing some searching across the web and I've yet to find a definitive answer on this issue. I'm trying to get my school email account to link to my Sensation via IMAP. My school uses Gmail as its mail server, so you'd think it would've been easy to link it. But I have yet to make this work after I've enabled IMAP on my email account, and tried numerous configurations in the IMAP server settings of the Sense mail app. Could anyone offer some help with this issue?
My school email address configuration is: "[email protected]"
Did you try setting up gmail with your school's email address?

Yeah, I've selected the Gmail option when creating a new mail account and entered all the information I had. If it helps any, my browser's url says "mail.google.com" when I'm logged into my school's email account. I've tried "imap.mail.google.com" and "mail.google.com" along with "pride.hofstra.edu" and "imap.pride.hofstra.edu" in the IMAP server settings, but still no luck.
Try forwarding your school email account to another email account. I had this same problem and I just forwarded to my gmail account and everything is good now.
incoming server is imap.gmail.com if you're using gmail app/servers, and port 993 with SSL
@op, just call ur skool's tech team or whatever n have them help u with that. I had to do the same since the incoming and outgoing servers r diff, and have diff port #s. All this I dint know n I was wondering y my setups never worked.

Dude... you guys are making this 100 times more complicated than it actually is.
Enter it as a gmail account WITH NO SPECIAL SETTINGS and just enter your school email address for the gmail id, then enter your password as usual.
I did this for my work email and it worked in two seconds.

I've tried entering my information without any settings and the same issue about being verify IMAP settings appears. I entered "imap.gmail.com" and, strangely, it says that my username/pass is invalid. I tried logging into my account via the regular gmail.com and it says it my name/pass is incorrect (weird?). I suppose I could just forward my school email to my regular Gmail as a second option.
I think this issue might be more complicated than it seems, since my school is somewhat known for its poor competency when integrating tech into its network. I suppose the incoming and outgoing servers are different or something. I'll ask around at tech support when I go back in a few weeks and see if I can get this cleared up. Btw, I'm actually a student staff member of my school's tech support team. Albeit, I was only recently hired. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!
Just enter [email protected] as a Google account under menu, settings, accounts and sync.
To access it via web it should be https://my.hofstra.edu/cp/home/displaylogin?service=/mobile/index.jsp
Yes you should enable imap and pop settings. You can also configure your main Google account to send and receive for your edu account. I have like 5 emails routed through my main gmail.

Just tried that, and it says that the password is invalid. I only need to sign in once for my school account to access all my services. There's also no mobile version for login either. And my IMAP and POP settings are both enabled on the regular desktop version. I guess I'll just route my mail through Gmail. Sounds much easier to do!
I also just had my school's emails forwarded to my Gmail account. I haven't had any problems this way and it took two seconds.

Are you typing in the full email address or only the id? You need the full email. Password may also be case sensitive.

Our tabs built-in email app is perfect for me. Only problem i have is that I cant get my corporate mail to work. Gmail and Ymail works fine. Our office uses MS Exchange but we can only access through OWA (even my PC Outlook is configured to go through OWA).
I've been using Seven Mail for quite some time now but recently its not updating my emails well.
Any help would be appreciated.
Btw. Tried Touchdown, K9, Kaiten, Moxier, Maildroid but did not like them.

I use the native email apk for corporate exchange email and it works fine. I prefer it over touchdown.
In my case, I entered the email address and password for my account, selected exchange, then I had to change the user name to my corporate domain\userid. I also changed the server name to owa.company.com. I had to select accept all SSL certificates.
Our exchange service requires some security controls on the device so you have to set a screen lock pin or password.
Same experience for me as for grogzero.
Technically speaking, as long as you can access OWA and your company is not using Exchange 2010, the email client will work. Specifically, the client uses ActiveSync (technology used by Microsoft) and this protocol works over OWA. This emans that as long as OWA works, your tab default client should work as well.
In Exchange 2010, mobile access must be enabled on top of OWA to allow ActiveSync to work. Otherwise, you should email your support and ask them about it.
Can you give us more specifics on the specific situation you have to deal with?
C.
Same issue
I am having the same issue.
My company uses exchange 2007 with SSL and has some security features requirements also. (pin requirement for example) The settings I have set up fine on my iPad but I really want to use the SGT instead of the iPad.
I am currently using TD and it has worked but I love the split screen on the native email app.
Any suggestions?
the solution to that issue is upgrade to 2.3.3, actually this works for me.
call your internet provider and ask for pop3 port. For ex mine is 26 instead of default 25

Hoping someone can help with this..
I'm using:
Server: webmail.company.com
Login: domain\user (not same as email)
Email: [email protected]
SSL (checked)
Accept all SSL (checked)
This has always worked in the past but recently stopped. When setting this up now I get an error: "You typed an incorrect server address or the server requires a protocol version that Email doesn't support".
Using all these settings in K9 mail I get a similar error. With K9 mail however I have the option to add a "Mailbox Alias". When I add [email protected] into the Mailbox Alias field it works.
Ideally I'd like to continue using the default Email app and Calendar but since there doesn't appear to be anyplace to add a Mailbox Alias in the default client I cannot. I am using that mailbox alias as the email address I enter when setting up the Email client.
It's not a company issued phone so there isn't much I can do as far as having changes made on the server. I believe they must have done an update or changed some setting, as there was an email that the OWA server was being restarted which preceded these problems.
I tried setting this up on an iPhone this evening. It didn't give the same error but rather just wouldn't connect to the same server. This previously worked as well as I had tried an iPhone briefly a few months ago.
It seems that no one else at work that collects email with their stock Android Email.apk is having any issues. I would assume at this point it is some kind of account problem, but I am using the same info as listed above in my work laptops Outlook client for collecting mail via https when not connected to VPN. I'm also using those settings on a Macbook in Entourage to connect to exchange, though I believe that uses webdav. Both of those clients continue to work, and as mentioned above, k9 works when adding my email address to the Mailbox Alias. I was also able to get TouchDown working though I'm not that interested in buying it.
If anyone has anything I'd love to hear it.
thanks!
This appears to be the issue that I'm having.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25648
It seems to be an account/permissions related problem though I don't really understand why adding a mailbox alias with K9 resolves the problem, though the above OP mentions his worked with Touchdown when it wasn't working with default email.apk.
