Is it safe to make nandroid backup? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it safe to do a nandroid backup of my Xoom via CWM?
I use the same SD in my Evo that I use in the Xoom. Will nandroid backups across the two conflict?

[Q] Clockwork Mod Backup/Restore

Are there instructions somewhere for doing backups/restores with Clockwork mod. I have my Gtab right at the place where I want it and would love to have a backup of this state. If I blow away the games again, my son may rebel!

HI
just go to backup/restore --->backup----> yes... for restore the same process!
Where do the backups end up. I would like to copy them off the tablet as an 'offsite' backup as needed.
Thanks
Scott
Nevermind, found the clockworkmod folder on the main sdcard, and copied to sdcard2. Very cool!
always
With CWM 0.8, it seems to keep only one copy of backup. I have done multiple backups but see only one backup in the clockworkmod\backup.
What happens if I place multiple backups in the folder. On restore, will I be able to select?
While backing up your ROM is always a good idea, if you are worried about games, progress saves, and settings, Titanium Backup will backup all your apps and settings. I always do a backup in Titanium before I go into CWM and do a backup there. TiBackup also saves the data to your internal memory.

Backups: Nandroid v. TiBu

Can someone help me understand the difference between a Nandroid backup and using Titanium Backup? Is it similar to the difference between image-based backup vs. file/application based backup? Under what circumstances would one be better than the other?
Your simile is spot on. Nandroid backup is used to completely restore a system with all apps and data.
Titanium Backup is used to restore/reinstall apps and data without changing your system. It's really handy if you get brave and decide to flash a new ROM on your phone. TiBu can put all your previously installed apps into place very quickly.
If you don't like the new ROM, just restore your old system from the Nandroid backup.
Ok, so help me think this through.
I've already Rooted/S-off/flashed a ROM on my phone. So presuming that the ROM image I download via CWM or XDA is on my card anyway, and I have TiBu (I have the paid version) that I can use to selectively restore apps, settings and data, would not Nandroid be redundant in this case?

The point of a nandriod backup is to easily go back to a working setup without having to spend time installing apps and tweaking all the numerous settings to your liking. 5 minutes to restore a nandroid backup vs. 2 - 4 hours of installing & tweaking.

Where do I download Nandroid?
Will this one work from the G1 thread?

Thanks
Nandroid is actually part of Clockwork Recovery. If you reboot to recovery mode you can make and restore backups from there.
As you say your on a custom ROM I assume Clockwork Recovery/CWM/ROM Manager was installed as part of the process.

I was just wondering about the same thing, so thanks for the thread.
Making a Nandroid backup right now ;-)
BTW, nandroid backups are stored on your SD card. You can free up space by either deleting or moving them to storage off the phone. Just keep a backup of your preferred restoration ROM on the SD card. Also, at the very least, it's a good idea to save a backup of the original manufacturer's ROM somewhere.

thanks for the link.
One issue though... it says ClockWorkMod requires ROOT access to create a backup rom image, which on my phone (ATT Aria with HBOOT 1.02) require to have S-OFF first with alpharev, yet most instructions tell you to create a nandroid backup first (which makes sense in case something goes wrong)...
Am I missing something ? you can't create a back, and you take risk doing S-OFF+Root to get there.
I want to remove unwanted ATT crapware, and install non market apps, but I need root access for all this. right ?

[Q] Creating a backup before rooting

Can you create a nandroid type backup before rooting a xoom in case something goes wrong? Is it possible to boot into recovery? I know you can root and install clockworkmod...which is what I intend to do. But I would like to know if it is possible to backup the xoom before attempting to root.
You can do a nandroid backup from CWM. But file size is limited to 4gig. So if you have a lot of apps, games, or data it's a no go.
You can boot into recovery with the 3g verson, but not the wifi only.

So that is after you root and install CWM, right? Is there a way to do a backup prior to rooting?
You can only make a nandroid backup after installation of CWM. And you have to be rooted to have access to your SD card. CWM will store the backup on your SD card.

Titanium Backups all I need?

So I tried making a nandroid backup today and it said it failed to make a backup image of my data. So I have a titanium backup as well of all my apps, so if I have that do I necessarily need a nandroid backup as well?

It's your choice
nandroid backup is a backup of all data in internal storage so it includes the rom but if you only backup with titanium backup, it will only backup your apps and data
if you want to try other rom you can use nandroid backup to restore to previous rom if you like the previous rom than the newer
and if you want to change rom and doesn't think to change to previous rom you don't need to do nandroid back you can use titanium backup
and don't forget to have enough space in sdcard, nandroid backup use about 300+ MB storage
