Okay, so I'm on stock 2.2.1 with root. I've never flashed this phone, but I've flashed some friends different androids for them. I was wondering what the best rom is right now, and anything else that I need to do like kernals or tweaks to make my phone as badass as possible. Can anyone help me?

Valhalla is your best bet.
I believe you need to flash GB bootloaders first as well as honks kernel for GB ROM's. There's plenty of wonderful guides in the dev section. The one by FB is probably the best.
Good luck.
The GB starter guide is ths one he is referring to.
Its all up to you which ROM you want. Miui is pretty hot right now. Valhalla is great and so is audiophile

Best ROM Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266320
Kernels: drhonk's Froyo and GB kernels
Tweaks: I think all of the GB ROMs are optimized now. The only tweak for GB is SASv7 beta by dsexton702. As for Froyo, there's a lot more tweaks. ICBINB KD1 has all of them. I'm not sure about Audiophile, although I'm sure it does. Black Ice and Bionix Frost are pretty basic though.
Just be sure to read the Bible. Flashing on this phone is very different.
I love bionix frost. It was so fun to tweak because it is super stable

It was the first ROM I flashed here. That gives it a special place in my heart. ;P

Currently running MIUI 1.99 with Matr1x #5 kernel. Looking to flash a new ROM and/or kernel as it's been awhile. There's so many of each that I don't know where to start. My main priorities are stability and speed.
The only other ROM I've used is Cyanogenmod but I had a lot of issues with random reboots. Have these issues gotten better?
Any ROM suggestions? Thanks
Rooted stock with Matr1x. I recently switched back after months on CM7 doing the nightly flash routine. Don't miss it a single bit.

I don't even remember what the stock rom is like. I got cyanogen almost inmediately after getting my phone. Perhaps I'll try stock... what's the best way to go about doing this? Do i need to unroot my phone?

backup apps with titanium backup + factory reset (wipe data/cache/dalvik) + flash stock rom.
here you can find a great collection http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
you DO loose root by flashing a stock rom, but you just have to re-flash superuser (and maybe cwm if needed). I find the stock gingerbread rom very fast and reliable.
Plus, you'll receive the ICS ota when it's ready
(but you'll need to flash the stock recovery)
Wait another 2-3 weeks and flash ice cream sandwich.

Flash deck 1.3. Really fast stable and great battery life. Its just like stock rom with a few extra tweaks. Has some of cm7 mods without the bloat. Has toggle switches on the drop down and some status bar tweaks but very stable and like I said its close to stock. Running it with matrix 9.0. Give it try.

Sorry man its in the nexus s 4g dev section but i cant find it on the GSM dev section. You can always try oxygen rom which is very similar to deck which I was running before I flashed deck. Has the same kind of tweaks more or less. Was also a really good rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285243
give carbon a shot. it's based on oxygen but gives better performance than any rom i've used since getting this phone

Decks is a CM7 kang with stock launcher, renamed cyanogenmod settings, and some additional files removed.

I'd suggest NSCollab and a trinity kernel. This combo worked well for me but I caught the flashing bug since getting this Nexus S and now I'm off to try Nexus MV.
you should try superosr rom (AOSP), very fast and include CM settings as well
I've been trying all NS Roms, and I'll prefer NSCollab because,
-Fast and stable (Near 5000 in quadrant)
-Never had a random reboot
-Extremely stable at 1,2GHz
-Probably the best CM7-based ROM
I don't give a opinion about which kernel u need to use, because they are all awesome, for the highest score in Quadrant, use the Trinity TUV kernel.
But I like the Netarchy or Matr1x kernel more because they are more stable in my eyes. I hope this will give you some more information
U can also wait for ICS (IceCream Sandwich), it will be awesome too.
I'd suggest stock rom + stock kernel.
lower quadrant score but higher performance
Oxygen 2.3 with Matr1x
4097 quadrant at 1,3Ghz.
*UPDATE*
Try the Franco.Kernel, tested it, very stable and high performance.
Greets.
Matr1x all the way bud lmao
Some data would be nice on this issue.
Thanks
I am using the latest Trigger rom.
From all the rom's I tried, i think its the best!

I'm on stock with root, bloat frozen.
Weapon and Bionix are missing from the poll.
I used CM7 Nightly for a while, i just flashed Bionix Reloaded a couple days ago with Dragon-G2x v1.1.1 and its super fast battery life is a little better then CM7 but i have not found out a way to port over themes but it offers alot of options to play around with
Didn't we have this thread yesterday?
You forgot to list Weapon. Most stable daily rom out there. Everything works. The rom has been abandoned, but it really does not matter. It is that good.
I'm using the eaglesblood kang version. Probably the best cm7 based ROM. Before this I was using weapon
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Weapon gave me random reboots and it was sort of buggy, so I stuck with EaglesBlood with Faux's 0.4.7 kernel. I feel as if EB is just the most stable rom for my phone at least.
MIUI all the way. From my experience the most stable and the best battery life. At least it is for me.

Same, but I like it for its customizable interface without needing other launchers. It's themes are pretty sweet. When can mix and match themes it makes me happy.

ROM : Mandaman2k ROM based on Peter Alfonso
Kernel : Matr1x
At the moment i am using Brickmakers MIUI 2.3.3 with Matr1x 16.0
I'm also using GPA 19 ... rock solid.
Now using Bugless Beast by Pete Alfonso, but I'm waiting until nexus Sense has got data! Than I probably will move to Nexus Sense! I'm running on the stock kernel, but Nexus Sense will run on Matr1x 11.5!! Bit old, but newer versions are for ICS.. Nexus Sense is on 2.3.3 at the moment... bit bad, but okay!
Greetzz, Jojoost.
Sent from my Nexus S running on Bugless Beast by Pete Alfonso!
ROM: GummyNex 0.7.0
KERNEL: Matr1x 15.5
Stable, smooth, battery full >50hrs.
Brickmakers MIUI 2.3.3 with Eugene Speedy 7
ROM : ICS Peter Alfonso
Kernel : Matr1x v15.5 (v16 does not have deep idle )
Slim ICS v2.4 Alllll the way (with stock kernel, that is speedy 7)
Pete crespo 4g nightly 02/09 with Glados v2.10.
Thinking of going back to gpa19 or cm7.1.0.1.

I've always gotten good battery life from Pete's roms. I do alot of internet stuff, as well as the normal few calls and texts during the day. I have no problem going an entire 15 hour day without hitting the charger.
Wow, that pretty good battery life. Ill be sure to give it a go. Thanks everyone for there input helped a great deal.
Cyber-GR mod v7 with Matr1x kernel 15.5. Its stable, smooth and fast (at 200-1200 mhz smartass v2). That's my main ROM & Kernel, but I'm always trying out new roms.
The new 4.0.3 MIUI roms werent impressive to me. Not smooth, and fast enough :/.
AOKP Milestone 3 with SG's 2/05 kernel. Pretty rock solid in terms of battery life and stability and overall smoothness .

Will test later with matrix 16.5 and new sg kerbel

miui 2.2.3 brickmaster.still looking for its battery performance
Whats the best GB, NON ICS rom/kernel since all the ICS roms Ive been trying continue to have the one app I want crash and crash and f***ing crash.

Really difficult to beat the combination described in this thread. Robrob777 has documented it very well ... Oxygen plus Lucid kernel.

But what I love is ultimate 1.0 + franco 10/28.

You may want to give CM7.1 + Trinity 1440/1544 a whirl, worked beautifully for me.
