GPS issue... - HTC Inspire 4G

I have noticed that my GPS hasn't worked on the past few roms that ive installed. Even when restoring a Rom that previously had working GPS, the GPS no longer works. Anyone know a fix for this? I am currently running the tpc stock rooted optimized v2.

Have you tried to reflash your radio?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

I would also say make sure your doing a proper wipe when your flashing. And also that your using the recommended radio for the rom your using.

My gps works fine, using coredroid ... I did a full wipe though before installing

I full wipe before each install or restore. Gonna try radio reflash and see if that helps.

doesn't turn on at all, or can't get a decent lock? If can't get a decent lock, trying GPSFIX / GPS essentials n all that? Just looking for clarification what the loss of functionality is.

Hi meiguoguizi..
Try "GPS scripts" .. it fixed my similar issue with latest Radio. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036253

Thanks!

But I'm not the OP . I am into GPS stuff tho this is cool . I am on my way to work but will check this out.
I have found that when my historical GPS data is wiped I have to use market apps like GPS Fix or GPS Essentials as an aid to getting lock again. I don't know if these really do anything...what it does do is have you watching the screen standing outside with open sky for 10 or so minutes as the # of satellites increases until it gets me within a 7 or so meter accuracy radius (lock). Then GPS behaves much better going forward with quicker acquisition times and such.

I had the same issue, reflashing the stock radio worked for me. This happened across several ROMs so I am not sure when the problems started. The ROM I am using now works best with the stock radio, flashed it and all problems were gone. I used GPS Status to lock, now I lock within seconds.

My gps stopped working on my first Inspire. Got spotty, then died completely, no matter what ROM. I restored to stock with s-on, same issue. Brought it to a warranty center and exchanged it. The new one locks better than the.old one ever did (and I thought the old was great) and has worked fine ever since. Might just be a bad chip.

Since this was developed for Gingerbread, and I'm still stock, I think I will wait either until I root, or get the OTA if not rooted, then try this out .
I have noticed, or seem to have, that when I am not toggling my GPS on and off as much over time the more accurate and quick it gets. I had profiles toggling it based on conditions. I started getting rid of those conditions vs. GPS, and I get locks much quicker. Of course it sucks the battery big time, but I am plugged in a lot. And I have a quick toggle I just have to keep in mind if I'm out and don't really need it and need the battery instead.

After changing several Roms I lost my GPS as well. First I did a full wipe, factory reset, all cashe, ect. Did a clean install (with certain roms I found having a clean reboot between installing add-ons helps). I then Installed the GPS Script for US ran the GPS Test App free from the market and get a lock on 9+ sats in under 25 sec.

no one mentioned this when they brought up reflashing hte radio, but make sure you have a matching RIL for the radio. i've had so many headaches over gps that were fixed by making sure i have the right RIL lol. for an easy way to download and flash RIL, check out the gtg4556 (i think thats right) section in ROM Manager and look for the RIL flasher. AWESOME tooL

Finally got around to fooling with this thing... lol... GPS is working again. I decided to go ahead and unroot to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue and it wasn't. Started working again when put back to stock. So, I rerooted and its still working. I'm assuming it was a radio mixup between roms or something. Thanks for all the responses.

Since I flashed the radio / ROM combination in my sig my GPS is behaving like one would expect. I had an HTC Tilt1 one and the GPS was good. I have been disappointed with the performance of the Inspire's GPS, but no longer. Locks under 10 seconds and sometimes under 5. Good. I like it when things like this are resolved.

If your gps stops working altogether, you can usually fix it by just re-flashing the radio. You don't need to unroot and go back to stock.

Loss of GPS after ATT stock rooted ROM

I lost my GPS after I ran the stock rooted ROM on one of two of my devices. The other one is working fine and gets a fix, but the second one doesn't ... I had InspireHD and then flashed to ATT stock rooted ROM, and one is working fine, and the other is not. I did a wipe\re-flashed the ROM but still not even the flashing GPS icon when I load a GPS app... ideas?
EDIT: there's a line in the performance file saying agps would that affect anything?

I had to install an alternate gps.spade.so in /system/lib/hw to get GPS working on CM7. I'm guessing it's the same for this too.

You can see the file CM7_RC1_gpsfix.zip near the end of that page.
When I first flashed the ATT stock rooted rom (attn1's) I had no GPS (icon wouldn't even pop up).
I had to wipe/re-flash the InspiredHD rom and then flash the ATT stock rooted rom on top of the InspiredHD rom (no wipe/factory reset....although I did wipe the cache.)

Yeah but then it's not using GPS it's using triangulation, so it's not really GPS, and not very accurate.

After getting a lock with it off I was then able to re-engage it and still connected fine.
As far as not using the networks at all, honestly that's what I mostly always use now. Less bouncing around and tracking is accurate as hell for me in NYC. Strange,

I thought that using wireless networks was AGPS not real GPS. If it is turned off that's when your using real GPS. At least that was my understanding when I had the captivate. The problem on the captivate was that when only using GPS satellites (real GPS) you could never get a lock. Correct me if I am wrong.

You're correct, the poster is using triangulation using cellular. It's never accurate to more than 900 meters (which is worthless for city navigation). It'll often guess and appear to be accurate, but in the end without using satellites there's no good accuracy.
Maybe my post wasn't clear. I use GPS Satellites only and uncheck wireless networks. Initially both were enaged and I couldn't get a lock, after unchecking wireless networks it locks almost immediately.
Same issue with mine...
On stock and on the downgrade rom after root, GPS works perfectly. When I load the rooted stock rom, it kills GPS and the icon will not even show up in maps or nav. GPS Test will not lock after an hour, even with "Use Wireless Networks" disabled. This has forced me back to stock until it gets fixed.

GPS problem with CM7

Hi guys. I need a little help here please. I am running cm7 on my inspire 4g and for some reason my GPS doesn't wanna work anymore?
It rarely locks on a signal whereas it used to never have a problem and locked within 10 or 15 seconds.
I have tried different fixes. I tried the combined audio+GPS fix found on this forum. I've tried different kernels. I just can't get it to work!!!!
Can anybody please help me get my beloved GPS working again???

I am also having GPS problems with CM7. If I install any nightly past RC2, my GPS will not work. I can turn it on in the settings, but I never get the GPS icon to turn on.
I just tried a clean install of nightly 19 and the GPS work once, now it won't turn on again. I did a factory reset/wipe data/wipe dalvik cache, then installed the ROM and google apps. After installing the google apps, I tried google maps and the GPS did not work. I rebooted the phone, the GPS worked. Installed my apps again, now it won't turn on at all.
I am at a loss...any ideas?
I've also had tons of problems with CM7 GPS...hopefully they'll get it worked out.

Try this. Disable wireless networks and GPS. Reboot your phone. This time check GPS only, leave wireless networks unchecked. Then open "Maps" and see if you get a lock. If you do you can re-enable wireless networks and all should be well. Let me know.

Flashing GPS fix and running this app fixed it for me.
GPS works perfect for me on nightly 19. Didn't have to flash any GPS fixes, download anything from the Market, or perform any odd tasks to get it to work. It just worked. Running stock CM7 kernel and stock Inspire radio with Eng S-ON (haven't found a reason to flash another radio).
I have the problem where the GPS doesn't ever lock, even after a reboot. I will see a Fix on 12/12, but it never locks location. I loaded Core 4 with Gingerbread and it worked fine and locked in 16 seconds. It seems like there's an issue with the algorithm for finding the location or something.
How are you guys determining if you have a "lock" on your location?
So there actually is a problem. GPS works until you turn it off and then back on again. Fortunately is was just fixed according to the changelog, so tonight's nightly should be gtg.

GPS Troubles on Nexus S 4G

I have tried running a few different ICS roms and had very bad luck with the GPS working. Is there something I should be doing prior to flashing a a new rom or after flashing that would help get the gps to work?
I have tried GPS Status, GPS Test and GPS Fix but nothing seems to work.
I have read tons of posts and nothing seems consistent in gettting the gps to work.
I have used AOSP 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 and vhgomez roms.

this will be moved into a different forum. dont post questions in development...but to answer your question, if you use those gps apps you sometimes gotta wait a while for it to pick up gps, u cant just hit clear agps data, redownload agps data and boom gps works. sometimes u gotta wait a little for it to find a signal. I've never in my whole history of owning an android phone have had gps issues that i couldnt fix by using those programs. and i've run the aosp oICS rom and had perfect gps.
If your GPS is not working at all, and you've tried everything. Try un-rooting your phone, go back to stock rom, see if that gets GPS to work. Then try to root again. I read on a Google forum that this guy did not have GPS working at all. He though he had a bad GPS chip or something. He un-rooted to return phone to Sprint and for some odd reason the GPS started working again. My GPS does not work also. It did prior to rooting. Im wating for the official OTA to un-root then root in hopes of getting it to work. I dont use GPS much so its not a issue for me at the moment. Good luck.
GPS seemed to be off for all the ROMs I was using, mostly in apps outside of the Maps app. I went back to 2.3.7 stock since I figure ICS OTA should be arriving soon.
Good to know I'm not the only one. I love ics too much to go back. But at least its a known issue. Anyone have any idea why?

Try the QBANIN GPSFix app if you haven't already, otherwise try using your GPS in different areas.
For the longest time I would rage because I had no GPS (or so I thought) when I attempted to use google maps or anything. Tried all the GPS fixes with zips and various apps, unrooted, same thing.
A month later I was on a trip out of state, opened up google maps and got a lock instantly! When I got back home checked gps again, still wouldn't lock.
Turns out for whatever stupid a** reason... about a 1/2 mile radius around my house GPS will not work but as soon as I get out of that area, its almost instant haha. Hopefully you have the same issue as I did

No GPS signal at all....

Has anyone else experienced this? I don't understand why I have no GPS signal whatsoever. Everytime I try to use Navigation it stays at "searching for GPS signal". for 20 minutes I had it in the middle of the road and nothing was blocking me. The only thing I can think of is that my GPS radio got messed up somehow from flashing CM10 for a day. I lost my data signal on it so I did a nand restore of my stock ROM. I never did the IMED backup or whatever it was for the CM10 ROM.

Here's something that may go for dev-bug, but...
I wiped my phone and applied the SlimBean R2 installer as well as the SlimGApps. Full factory reset, all that fun. So hopefully no remnants causing these symptoms:
Yesterday I ran Waze (driving/mapping app) on my SlimBean for ~45 minutes without ever getting a GPS lock. Rebooted, tried again for another 30 minutes. No GPS connection.
The GPS Status app says that it's not seeing any satellites at all... so apparently my GPS isn't even trying, as my phone with ICS normally sees 10-12 satellites here. After testing with GPS Status, reflashed SlimBean, reflashed SlimGApps, checked GPS Status again. Still not a single satellite seen. Recovery, flashed YAGF2.zip (Yet Another GPS Fix 2), system, GPS Status, still nothing.
I should probably note that the cell location has been working... Waze was giving guesses as to where I was currently located based on my cell towers. Obviously Wifi location isn't working without Wifi, so the question I have is... are other people using JB actually having GPS satellite locks, or is this another current JB bug? I ask because OP doesn't mention GPS issues, though people reported reboots when GPS tries to take effect. The only GPS thing I did before was making sure that Internal GPS was actually set as the GPS source in Location services, since that wasn't checked... Internal GPS was the only option, but it wasn't checked.
If you need logs or something, let me know what you'd like. Thanks.

Our phone is infamous for its horrible GPS, try this GPS patch and see what happens, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963915
Already had that downloaded. Let's give it a shot, and...
Reboot to recovery, flashing agps.patch.google.build.nossl.twrp.v3.1.zip, reboot to system, GPS Status sees...
Nothing. Still just "Looking for GPS location..." with no Compass (heading stays at 0 degrees) or satellites seen.
One more thing. I know it's been noted that the phone audio only works through the speaker, but music also only comes out through the speaker. At least, plugging into the headphone jack didn't make MortPlayer Audio Books actually come out through the car's sound system, it was still coming out of the speaker.

Read the notes if it doesn't work, let the GPS stay on. Try other methods on the notes.
Note 4:
This works with ANY ROM unless the ROM has aGPS and/or GPS disabled in the code. This happens with CMx nightlies and some betas! I cannot fix this, neither can you.

So... as I'm asking, has anyone actually confirmed that GPS (not location services, but GPS itself) is enabled and working? The build.prop tweak that it suggests (Note 13) doesn't appear to apply, since neither this nor ICS (AOKPm6r5) have the ro.ril.def.agps.mode forced.
Also, note that as I said before, I've let GPS Status or Waze run for going on an hour without it seeing a single satellite... GPS is NOT ENABLED on my JB. Just like Wifi, except it's marked as 'on'. I'm wondering if this is my phone hating life and needing to offer up some logs, or if this is a standard issue. -_-
That being said, when I turned off GPS and just used cell location, I had my first random reboot on second location services call (Yelp's location check). After it finished rebooting, told it to start trying to use GPS again and it went back to just guessing wildly as to my location based on cell towers without ever using GPS (GPS Status never showed in the notification bar, no little coda to signify GPS lock attempt), but also without the reboots, so that was nice.
