Does anyone have a solution on the eee pad for playing avi/xvid/etc videos over UPNP or SMB that allows seeking? I have tried all video apps I could find in the market, and found nothing that works well yet. The setup I am running works well when playing and seeking using XBMC on a PC, so it is technically possible.
Here are my observations so far:
Most video players only supports the natively supported video format (i.e. same as the gallery app), that is not really useful for me.
Of the other players, the ones that somewhat work for me are MoboPlayer, RockPlayer, QQPlayer, VPlayer, BUZZ Player, and yxplayer. Notable cases that
just crash: ArcPlayer, DreamPlayer, SeamanPlayer
For reading UPNP there is UPnPlay. However, in my setup, exporting over UPNP with ushare, it appears streaming only work with BUZZ player. MoboPlayer and RockPlayer (often reported to work wih UPnPlay) just seem to get stuck a long time when opening the file, as if they where downloading it completely before starting. Sometimes they play a few seconds of video after that, and then gets stuck again. Seeking does not work correctly with BUZZ player.
For reading from SMB shares, one solution is 'File Expert' which cleverly re-exports SMB-files via a local http-link. One opens the SMB share under 'Network' where clicking on a video file give a choice of browsers; I open in Dolphin Browser, which opens another file dialog where I can chose a video player. This I get to work with Moboplayer, Rockplayer, VPlayer, and BUZZ Player. However, none of them can seek in this stream.
Another SMB option is Astro file manager + Astro SMB module, which I assume is supposed to work the same way as File Expert. However, upon trying to access the SMB functionality in Astro, it just force closes.
Last, BUZZ player has built in functionality for accessing files through SMB and UPNP. I cannot get the SMB functionality to work (the player just don't play the file when clicked). The UPNP functionality plays the file, but seeking does not work.
Other than this I also note the following about the players:
BUZZ Player seem to have audio-video sync problems with many of my videos. It also tends to get stuck very long in "Loading. Please wait..." when accessing its built in network browsing, with no option to stop the operation.
yxplayer does not seem to register any file types at all, so it is a pain to open streaming links in it (figure out URL string and copy, open yxplayer, chose open URL, paste URL.) It also seems to have much less smooth playback than the other players.
Using cifs on Primordial 3.1 I have had great success streaming video over my wi-fi network and seeking works perfectly. I'm not sure if the player matters but I prefer Mobo Player as it seems to be the most compatible one I've found so far.
Ah, of course, I should root the pad to get this working as Linux has very nice remote filesystem abilities. Thanks for the hint.
But, isn't it odd that no one has pulled this off in a non-root market application? I cannot imagine that it would be horribly hard to do using http range requests. (Of course, if it was me, I would have gone for a port of libcurl using Android NDK.)
I finally found a solution for non-root upnp streaming with working seeking!
UPnPlay + LittlePlayer
LittlePlayer is a quite nice player with a software decoder that seems to handle most formats. It is also the first player I have found that uses the honeycomb 'Lights out mode' (the status bar gets blacked out), which is nice.
Now only remains to find a non-root solution for streaming from smb. I wonder why FileExpert's smb->http functionality does not work.

Maybe I miss something obvious but I have no issue streaming over Wifi with a combination of UPnPlay, RockPlayer (universal), mVideoPlayer, MoboPlayer.
Once clicks on a video file, UPnPlay browser allows selecting which player to launch (it is a pain that one do have to remember supporting formats for each player). Seeking within a video file does not seem to be a problem.

This is really odd. Have you rooted, or done anything else "odd" with your transformer? I know that the way you describe it is how it is supposed to work, but for me most players just stalls when they should stream (but, it does work with 'Little Player'). I just assumed that this was an issue with Honeycomb compatibility. But if it works for you, then maybe it is something else. What device are you streaming *from*? I am using ushare.
All this said, wasn't there an update for UPnPlay the other day? Maybe they have fixed this now.

I have a 4 TB NAS appliances on our home network loaded with all our family's media. This works great for our other networked devices (blu-ray players, wii, 360, etc) and using the builf in file manager on the G I can map to the NAS. Problem comes whenever it hits some xvid/divx/mpg video files, it just won't play.
Any recommendation of an app that can do media from a network server?
There is a dlna app that comes with the droid x that I don't believe is tied into the framework. I will see if I can link the files for it.

Getting a decent uPnP client is on my list of ToDo's - I'm hoping that we can port the Archos video player over, just for that purpose.

<edit2>Copied the link wrong which caused the parse error, APK installs correctly and the app runs fine as a DLNA server. ( I didn't verify connectivity), but it force-closes if you select "Network Settings Set up Wireless Access Points" possibly due to the TnT version of Settings?
either way, it makes your gTablet a server, not a client so you won't be browsing your NAS with this APK...
ah well, looks like we might be waiting for kernel source or a custom compiled kernel to get streaming video.

I found an app called UPnPlay in the market that is working really well for me. If you are familiar with the Archos media player this has very similar capability. If you haven't done the market fix you probably won't find it though.
I was just watching a movie streaming from my Windows home server on my G tablet. Played nice.. Took it a few minutes to initially find my server but it did.

Nice tip used it and rockplayer worked perfect
This is a nice app - tried it and it found my media player (PS3MediaServer) fairly quickly. It did crash once, but it's certainly better than nothing.
It plays audio and photos well, but video seems a bit choppy on my setup so far. I have all different types of containers / codecs so I might have to find the sweet spot - Xvid / MP3 / AVI's seem to play best.

I think it's limited by the video player - and MKV support on the GTab is very limited, unfortunately.

This finds my MythTV server. I am able to play .wmv videos on the MythTV server, with the default player. But it is unable to play the MythTV recordings of OTA digital (HDTV). These are a form of mpeg-2 video, similar to what a standard DVD is. If we can find a player that can play DVD files, then I think it will play MythTV recordings too.
ORB LIVE is the answer.
Orb is the Answer to this... if we can make it work.... I use Orblive on my EVO and it works amazingly. I can stream from anywhere and it decodes most files. It runs over Wifi, 3g and if I am on the same network as my server, it goes direct without hitting the Internet. I works GREAT.
But unfortunately, it doesnt work right on my GTAB. This could be specific to my device, but it cannot stream the files. This sucks because this is one of my main uses for buying this device. With Flash fixed, I can stream through the internet via the orb.com webpage. But the App works much better. If anyone that understands the codecs of these things can figure out how to make the orblive app work, it would be amazing.
To the G tablet users using UPnPlay, how do divx files do for seeking/searching? I'm using UPnPlay on my Evo with both Rockplayer and Vplayer and neither searches or seeks particulary well..... or at all. If the video file plays with Androids native video player, it seeks just fine.
I don't want to be forced to always begin playback and the start of the video and not be able to resume where I left off if I have to leave the player/app.

I've been looking for solutions to stream video from my PC to the Galaxy Tab. I'm running out of space on the tab, and can't keep copying stuff. This is quite useful around the house. Thought I'd share.

(It basically uses VLC to stream, but doing this is a lot easier than configuring an actual VLC install)
Then install AndroStream on the Tab, and put your PCs IP in the settings.

Personally I think anything that 1) requires server software and 2) transcodes live is a waste of time. Allshare is superior because it uses DLNA to actually stream video in its original format. Sadly its not great either. Until we have cifs or a proper streaming apparently in the market ill stick to not actually watching much of anything (or using orb if I'm not at home).
What're people using as a DLNA/UPnP server to stream _to_ the Tab? I can get it to see media from XBMC but it says everything is in an unsupported format, even if I can copy it to the device and play it directly.

Absolute usless ...
Androstream is not working at all 8and from devressponse I'd like to say not developed anymore ...). VLC Stream and Convert is working and more or less stable - but - what I found also useless - as
When you get ES Explorer and browse directly to your networkshare you simply can play everything with the build in videoplayer ... even if it tells you that the format is not supported ...

I've found that getting the CIFS module loaded is pretty straight forward via this thread, then you can just browse to your file share with whatever program you like.
I've found that the built-in player will play virtually anything but has buffering issues, RockPlayer and VPlayer buffer properly and play a similar range of formats.
Nothing I've tried coped very well with any of my video test files encoded at 1080p, or with embedded AC3, but I'm not a) surprised or b) worried about this.
I'm new to the world of Android having come across from the iPad and thought I'd try to stream from my home MAC to the Asus on the local network.
I installed Skifta and XBMC and managed to stream successfully (although 720p was incredibly stuttery).
Anyway, with the new update I started using myNet, but while I can send from the Asus to my Mac's XBMC I cannot send from the Mac to the Asus - the Asus thinks about playing, then stops. Anyone else managed this?
As a brief aside, should I be using something other than Skifta/XBMC? I tried Homepipe but it don't seem to stream, and there was no Mac server for Androstream as far as I could see.

I've found the combination of UPNPlay and mobo player work great for streaming videos etc from my computer to the transformer. Both are free on the market. I've streamed 720p videos from my PC that worked perfectly using this method.

On a vaguely related note, I'm hoping that the developers of Mirage Beta (find it on the market) will soon release a version for tablets. This app uses the Air Video server (which works great on the ipad) to stream/transcode content on your phone/tablet. It works pretty well at the moment on my HTC Desire, but won't work on the tablet.
I tried this last night for the first time, and while mynet in theory works a treat, finds all the UPnP devices ont he network, finds all the findable folders and media (and vice versa, other machines on the network can see the TF101 perfectly), none of the files i can see will play on the Asus. The default player starts and instantly crashes on any video, music or photo file. I am going to replace the stock one with a couple from the market and see if that helps, although ironically the video stock player on my Archos 70 works a wonderfully over the network.

I've heard MP4's work so maybe converting the MKV's to MP4's might work ?.
I got told off the other day for referring to mkv files when in fact they are just containers and pretty much anything could be inside. You have been warned!
Converting using Handbrake etc will work but it is a pain to have to do. Thats why I miss Airvideo and the on-the-fly conversion.
Apparently there is something called Mirage Beta (?) which is similar on Android, but is isn't available for tablets yet.
I was having similar problems, my TF can see the movies on my shared drive, but when i click them it cannot play them using the 'my net' app.

you use the server program and add the folders you want shared, then you use the app and you can stream lots more formats than the 'my net' app and you can specify the transfer speed/bandwidth etc.
the server app grabs meta data for the files you add from the net and adds DVD cover art to your movies as well.
I didnt need to do any port forwarding or anything complex with it installed on Windows 7 home premium, it just works.
It also says it will work over 3G/4G but I havent tried yet.
(ps. on a side note, the few iPhone formatted mp4 files i have on my shared network stream ok through 'my net' so the problem is probably file format related / codec related.)
I also went with Plex after trying several different apps that claimed to stream. Plex was the only product that I found that streamed in HD and the quality looks great! Best $5 I ever spent!
Only downside to Plex is that Im not too thrilled about the interface. It shows all your movies in a grid, I really wish there was an option to display just the list of movies. I have quite a few movies in my collection so loading up all the movie covers can take some time and makes scrolling slower than hell. If they let you sort just by list without cover art, I'm betting it would scroll a whole lot better.

im surprised you had trouble, tversity is supposed to downconvert if needed. Not tried them myself, but this is the same setup im using.
I just got my transformer with the new 3.2 HC and having trouble streaming videos from my PC to my Transformer. I've followed the direction on the manual and also downloaded Moboplayer (moboplayer not seeing the files on my PC). Did anyone find a way to get MyNet working correct??
I've found Mynet to be largely unreliable as there are too many formats that it wont play.
I've found a great combination that works really well, and you can play anything as the video is converted on the fly.
Movie Player: MX Player
This player is capable to playing 720p videos very well, and I found it to be faster than Moboplayer
UPNP Client: UPNPlay
this program is very easy to use and is used to fine the files
Server: PS3 Media Server
This server is freeware and works on Windows and Mac. All you need to do is to manually enter your IP address, and make sure you have your android's UPNP Client running before you start the server.
Purchased DicePlayer 1.5.2 last night, works a treat with local storage (MicroSD, SD)! Worth way more than $4.95 to me! My 720p MKVs play like they are supposed to. Perfect for when not at home. But when at home I would rather play them directly off my NAS like I do with my TV (DLNA) and Dune HD media player (DLNA or SMB/CIFS).
But I can't figure out how and it may need some more "middleware". I can browser to content on the NAS using ES File Explorer and Total Commander BETA with LAN plugin. But then it either gives an error or won't find/load the video. When using the same two apps to navigate to local storage it works, to the NAS via SMB/CIFS it does not How to hack this together??? Some how DicePlayer needs to notice the SMB remote mount like local storage for SMB? Or Dice needs to talk DLNA since my NAS is offering up content via SMB and DLNA?
Before finding/buying DicePlayer I had purchased the Plex app for Android as I can also run a Plex server on my NAS. That however is doing real time transcoding and the CPU limitation on the NAS means I have to transcode to the lowest video setting on the Transformer. Which still works, but doe snot look as good as native 720p does locally.
I hope this makes sense!
Get upnplay from the market and use that to connect to your nas since its broadcasting upnp. Just make sure your network can handle it.

Root, install a custom rom that has cifs.ko then download cifsmanager so you can mount your nas. Of course your NAS has to support cifs.
I am running Freenas on an old p4 and can stream a good number of my mkvs this way.
Found UPnPlay, surprised I missed it, thanks! I will try that tonight. Sounds promising from the reviews. The other methods I have come up end up copying the files over to local storage which is no good.

Exactly, no issue with ES file manager probably the best dlna client out there, much faster than Unplay. The latter shows a delay in picking up files. With Dice Player had no issues picking up the stream from ES. Same issue of having to long press on MKV for it to play, weird . . .
OP, I would recommend looking at your firewall and router settings becuase something is blocking your connection.

Let me make report for night. To recap. TF101 with HC 3.2 (stock) and DicePlayer 1.5.2 paid. NAS is ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus. SMB/CIFS and DLNA both enabled on the NAS and I stream to my TV directly (Samsung, DLNA) and media player (Dune Smart D1, SMB) just fine. To date, when I use ES File Explorer to browse a MKV on the NAS and select it says "Sorry, no application available"; even though by the icon it KNOWS it is a video.
So. I first tried UPnPlay. It worked! It asked me to chose a player program after pressing, I choose DicePlayer. It starts right away but only audio, no video. I have to skip back and forth some then things pick up OK. Happy!
So then I looked on the Android Market for other DLNA apps. I saw a Skifta Beta. I know the name Skifta from my ReadyNAS as I have seen a plugin for Skifta, never used it as I couldn't figure out what it would do for me past the builtin ReadyDLNA server the NAS has for DLNA. So I grabbed it. Interface of the app is more polished. But same problem with DicePlayer and the no video until I jigger the slider. Still happy though. 99% there.
Then I visit here and see about the long press from within ES File Explorer. Never thought to try that. Did it. Prompted me to pick a file type (video) which then prompted for a player (DicePlayer) and it worked! I can't recall if it had the same no video problem as before. Because that is when I decided to reboot the TF101. But now when I do the long press and open as video it dims the screen It never asks for a player and it stays dim until I hit anything else.
Watz the heck? Strange! So I have some progress. But would like to not use UPnPlay or Skifta if they are not needed and get ES to behave again!
I will maybe reinstall ES and reboot and muddle about.
But it's not a network/firewall issue at this point, that I does know

I would also like to add my unit started doing another weird "dim screen" thing the other day. When I get the task bar alerts for incoming GMail and click it to open (versus "x" for close alert) it does the same dim screen thing! Like somehow the requested app can or will not load.

My unit was docked and reorient did nothing but then I undocked and whacked it around and the dialog to pick came back for ES! Which now seems to work all OK! But I still get the audio+black screeen video in DicePlayer until I rejigger all around. Which is a bit annoying as it is now soooooo close. Mayhaps I reboot and start things from scratch again.
But good to know this dim screen issue is OS related so should be fixable as one mate said by 3.2.1
Oh, forgot to add like I have seen elsewhere re similiar issues for screen and DicePlayer here I have unchecked the thumbnail for video option early on in process tonight for black screen.
I saw the DicePlayer guy has a new support email and the price has gone up! Let's hope the support stays the same

There are different programs like VLC DIRECT which can do it. That is the one I use and it works great. I think there is another one called Emitt.

I just recently got this working myself, so I hope this combination of two apps works for you.
The first app accesses the network shares of my Windows PC. I'm using Estrongs File Manager which saves username/password information and specific file directory share shortcuts. It even see's the admin shares (c$, d$...) so I can access anything on my desktop.
For the Media Player I use MX Video Player.
When I select a Video file in Estrongs from any of my Desktop's file shares, MX Video Player plays it over the WiFi. I'm playing all sorts of .AVI, MPG, MPEG, and WMV files without a problem so far.
I sure wish I could do this on my iPad as easily.

i followed your ideas, as is sounds great. Got confused about "Estrongs".
cannot see my "shared folders" from pc. Tried to find the server as provided in Estrongs.
It finds my PC's IP but I cannot log on or see any shared folders.
I also tried to connect via the built in FTP client. then it cannot find my FTP server on the PC. Strange, as I am quite advanced in using my network.
Am I missing something>??

Could anyone tell my how can I stream video on my Android from my home network without have to download it first?

cifs manager + any player (I find cifs manager better than the mount feature of estrongs/file expert/astro)
I use Plex and it works great. Install PLex media server on your PC\Home server and then you can stream the video to your android device using the PLex for Android app.
Subsonic
The only real choice for this is Subsonic
+1 for the CIFS Manager + video player (in my case, Mobo Player) solution. I've used it for 8 months and it works like a dream, super-fast, super-flawless.
I use a combo of EStrongs file manager, and Mobo player. Just add your computer to the "LAN" section, find the file.
I was able to stream pretty much anything over the network at home.
Imedia share works for me
