[Q] Facebook sync? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi people,
i just bought my Nexus S (I9023, S_LCD version), It is running on 2.3.4 now and I noticed there's no facebook contact sync option. I learned that google removed it (damn sh*t!)
is there any app that can do facebook contact sync? (I used SyncMyPix but I need the real contact sync not just pictures)
If there are no apps to do it, is rooting an option? I hope someone here can provide a step by step easy to follow rooting and installing ROMs coz I dont want to mess my new phone. plus im not a pro when it comes to Android modification (was able to root my x10 mini pro and installed xrecovery and JIT but thats about it. and i did them the easy way, not the hardcore manual way), so i still consider myself an amateur when it comes to this.
anyway, i hope someone here can help me. that's the only thing missing in my Nexus S, the facebook sync. and again, im using the I9023 S-LCD version, with 2.3.4 installed. Just thought I should mention that in case there are different ROM versions for specific Nexus S model.
Thanks guys!!

You can use Contapps

This post should be in the questions and answers section.
There are custom roms (modified versions of the OS) that support facebook sync. One of which is cyanogenmod. You will need to root your phone and there are many guides in the general section that tell you step by step how to do it. Most everyone here was in the same boat as you one time or another and i think we can agree that reading and searching gave the answers.

Google+ App (No invites thread)

Hey everyone
I just set-up my google+ acct and am trying to figure things out. I finally found the App for this, but it would not let me download it as I am currently living outside of the US. Does anyone know how i can go about downloading this app? hiding my IP or something?
All the help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
dude, you shouldn't have to? unless this is outdated idk what your issue is cause I'm in Canada and it let me in no problem. Try again? Maybe unsupported device...
How did you find the App in the first place? I couldn't find it in the android app store from my Samsung Infuse so I typed it into google from the phone and came across it and that is where I had trouble... Any ideas? Thanks again!
all i did was search it in the marketplace??
somethin's up, what phones do you have??
Mine: LG Optimus One P500h
We published in the Portal an article about non US members installing G+
Have a read
i used this app but found it pretty bad. don't recommend it
Sent from my Jaguaralani Gamer's Edition using XDA App
the app is for android 2.1+
it is working very smooth on my phone
liked it
it does take time to get used to though
Thanks for the help everyone! The app seems to be working great, just not getting and notifications pushed... Anyone know how to get that working? Thanks again.
I also cannot get it to download/install on my phone. I get a package file error. Im on an EVO was wondering if it had to do with the ROM Im running or if anyone else was having the problem.
Maybe try using the app that was referred to me above by Orb. I'm running it on my Infuse with Infused Rom, not problems thus far minus not getting pushed notifications at the moment.

Total Newbie

I just got the Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-mobile
as a free upgrade - I didn't even know what an APP was much less
an Android os. In any event it came with froyo and I ugraded to
Gingerbread 2.3.6 -
I was wondering why I was not getting anywhere with T-Mobil and Samsung
support = now I know I had to find out from my Bank y there mobile app would
not work = phone needs current android OS. Will Android 4.1 work on /B]my phone and where do I get it?
Apparently Samsung is not coming forth as they have Galaxy S 3 coming out
PLEASE DO NOT DELETE -
No... It wont. If the app doesn't work with your phone most likely it's just not supported on your device.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
That's very strange that an app wouldn't work for 2.3.6 and only ICS, but no, you can not get Ice Cream Sandwich on your device, as it is not out for the device. If it were to be supported on your device though, it would upgrade in the same manner that you went from Froyo to Gingerbread. I hope this helps.
Thanks guys for the feedback
What bank app is it? All ones I know of work with 2.2 and above so maybe you've been misinformed?

It is PNC Virtual Wallet bank app that allows you to make a mobile check deposit
Thanks in advance
Welcome, I'm a newbie too, as well as a bit of a stranger to Android (I've always had a Blackberry until a few months ago).

Unfortunately, Samsung (and many other manuf) is pretty bad about releasing Android updates for its devices. If you want a newer version, you will have to root it. If you are ready to learn and get frustrated at times then visit this link about your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G
I recommend becoming very intimate with the steps and reading up on if your device can be un-bricked before starting.
just looked at link and read part of it will finish tomorrow thanks
for the link
Everyone has been a noob some day so for you to star i would recomend you to visit freeyourandroid.com and start watching their wiki and some simple things...after that go to your phone dev section and learn a little bit of it....then root it with the easiest way out there(there are always like 3 ways)...after a week with root try to install a ROM or a kernel or a modem...something easy!! and for your samsung device always see if the part your going to flash is for your device so you dont get a $400 bucks toy
here are my ¢2 cents of help remember to always thank every guy who gives you an answer and welcome

Since this app has become reason enough to research, have you considered trading out the device for a newer model with T-mobile? May have to shell out some cash, but there are benefits to trading up if you're so inclined.
I had a quick look on Virtual Wallet by PNC from the Market and based from the reviews, it looks like you're not the only one having issue with that app. There's a developer webpage so maybe have a quick look if they are planning to update the app or email them.
Also as linearstream have mentioned, have a good read on that wiki to understand more about your phone. I did the same thing when I started rooting/modding my phone about a month ago. Believe me it's all worth it
I will do thank you
Can't afford right now but will keep as a option - tx for the feedback

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to smartphones. Just got myself an Xperia Play 800i.
You won't be able to run ICS stock, but you may want to check Cyanogenmod and see if your device is under the supported list and see if they are developing and ICS rom for your phone. You may want to get someone a little more technologically advanced to see if they can flash your phone to ICS. I would not recommend doing it yourself as it may result in bricking your phone, or just a lot of frustration and getting no where.

In what part of the world/region did you buy your phone from? What software/firmware version you have? Also is the CPU S3 or S4?

I bought the phone from Saudi Arabia. I have the S3 version.
I am not 100% sure about this, but if I recall correctly it used to write from left to right when i bought it. <-- Not too sure about this.
Android 4.0.3
So i took a screenshot
the justification does not solve the problem still
any clues?
the title is fine, it writes from left to right

I downloaded a program called morelocale2 and it allowed me to change my country to stuff outside the preinstalled countries so I set it to Canada since that's where I live but it is still the same
I have the exact same problem with my htc sensation (bought in Lebanon), when I updated to ice cream sandwich and got the note app.
I contacted htc support and I received this reply: "Kindly note that this issue has been escalated for a higher level for investigation and we would contact you the moment we receive an update."
I hope that someone knows how to fix it and thanks for the help.
"I can see how the text starting on the other side of the screen would be quite the problem. I would be glad to address this with you. In regards to this, many settings of the phone are set to what region they were manufactured for. I took one of our test One S phones and there isn't a setting in the app to change the text orientation. As a workaround for this, I'd suggest trying a third party app from Google Play store. I'd like for you to give this a shot, and if you have any further problems then let me know. In the meanwhile, I hope you have a great day!"
This is the answer I got from HTC when I told them about the problem, does any one know such app?

I know you are not rooted
If it is only the notes app can you somehow uninstall/delete it and re install it or another note app from market
I rooted my phone same day I bought it, so am not familiar on how to do that stuff on non-rooted phones
There is no way to uninstall it using the normal uninstallation methods and I have not found a way to download it again. I would gladly download a diff notes app however I cannot find a semidecent one that I like

Agreed Evermore is great. Perfect sync from pc to phone.
Hahaha! Sorry, but that's got to be so annoying it's hilarious.
Try Evernote. HTC Notes actually syncs with Evernote anyways, which is why it asks for you to login when you turn it on for the first time. Great app, has all the features of stock Notes + a lot more.

Hi all, this is my first post in here so plz bear with me if i sound like such a newb.. so i got my HTC one S last week, after being totally bored with 4yrs of iOS.. i gotta say everythin is great.. except for the crappy Calendar, no iOS-style shake to Undo, and this little issue with Notes: it also insists on typing English characters from right to Left! Needless to say this is frustrating for sum1 who uses Notes multiple times a day.. and such a disappointment for an -almost- flawless device & OS.. No i do not think downloading a third-party application, or rooting the device is worth the hassle because i am not trying to locate a star in space, i just wanna type sum text for god's sake! come on there has to be a solution to this.. Furthermore, the iPhone 5 is coming out soon.. just sayin.. FYI i also got my device from Saudi, running ICS 4.0.3 + HTC Sense 4.0.. Cheers

Run a WWE RUU. Why did you talk about the iPhone 5? It has no relevance. The problem is where you bought the device from, which is Saudi Arabia. Arabic writes from right to left, which is why you should buy it from another country if you're from a different country.

To tell the truth, i didn't face this problem on my EVO 3D before. . . But it started when I installed the stock rom made for middle East and updated to ICS. . . I don't know but I believe if you flashed a none Middle East rom you'll get it fixed. . .

Questions about the Facebook Home suite.

So I assume that most of you have seen the announcement about the new Facebook Home suite that will debut on the HTC First and be available as a separate download after. I noticed, however, that it will only be available for the HTC One, HTC One X, HTC One X+, SGS3, SGS4, Galaxy Note II. Does this mean that there is no way that the DS will be able to support the suite?
doubt there will be official support, but someone may make it useable on this phone

It shouldn't be too hard to port it, if the s3 can run it so can the s3 mini and then from there the desire s should be able to run it
If I know right, Facebook will develop the Facebook Home for other devices too. The HTC First will come with the launcher integrated with system running on top of stock JB 4.1.1/4.1.2 so I hope we'll see also ports from that ROM. The only annoying thing is that, you would also get ads on your home screen(at least, some tech websites say so). But however, you can turn the Facebook Home off directly in it's settings, or by simply replacing the Home launcher app.

Here you go. Before installing, you must delete the old facebook app.
Works on my DS too! ViperSaga 2.2.0
I was reading an article on Gizmodo about a port already being completed. It linked to this guide and I tried it out. I thought it ran okay tbh, however there was a problem with the messenger app because it wouldn't let me reply to anything. I tried it out for a bit but I got fed up with it, it's very simple and obviously it's Facebook centric, I decided I don't need that much Facebook in my life. I'm perfectly happy with the app. I'd recommend that you try it though, your experience may differ from mine.
What advantages brings this app to the average user? Is it worthy to install? Will it ruin my phone experience?
Thx

I don't think it brings any advantages unless you're a heavy Facebook user. It's quite basic in it's function, I noticed that the messenger app stopped working properly when I started using it. It was very smooth and worked quite well in my opinion other than the Facebook Messenger experience. The stock messages app can be used instead so it can work out for the average user. It's a simple install so I'd suggest downloading and trying it out, you might like it and keep using it, if you don't then just delete it and go back to the way your phone was before. I don't think there are any risks by installing it on your phone. However, I'm not sure if it affects the battery life or not, I didn't really use it for long enough.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Calendar on HTC One (Beer for Help!)

Hello all,
This is my first post, but I have used the site for a long time. I am a noob so go easy on me.
I am looking for a way to put the Galaxy S4 Calendar on my HTC One. I have looked around for a few hours but have yet to find anything that would be useful. I switched from the S4 to the One and this was the one app I miss! Is this even possible?
Thanks for any help you may provide.

AFAIK the calendar from the s4 needs touchwiz framework to run properly. Since the HTC One is Sense 5, i highly doubt that you can install the calendar unless of course a dev makes a touchwiz rom for the HTC One.
If youre feeling optimistic you could try finding the calendar app ffrom the s4, and put it into your phones system/app directory using a root explorer and changing the permissions to rw-r-r, but like i said...the chances of it working are very low.
