I really want to change the browser string to desktop, but every time I do the browser crashes when I try to back out of settings and then whenever I try to start the browser until I reset the browser. Has anyone else run into this problem and been able to fix it?

How are you getting to it? I'm assuming you mean the default Browser that comes with Android. I had the option on my Aria, but it's not on my Captivate.

Type about:config into the browser bar. It will look like nothing happened, but when you go to settings immediately after there are new options. I'm disappointed. I really want this to work.
I'm just not using the stock browser. I downloaded Opera mini and it gives me the ability to change that in the settings, and it seems much faster. It also has a better tab system.

Heck, I'm not even getting those options after putting in about:config.

It seems much faster because Opera uses their servers to load the page for you, so it allows them to optimize the site. Same thing for Skyfire.
Did you press "go" after entering about:config and then immediately go to settings?

Yeah I know how it works, I just find it an overall better user experience than the stock browser. I tried Skyfire and it seemed to slow down my entire phone, even when I wasn't using it so it got deleted.
I have the same problem. I did it by typing about:debug (not about:config). After that the browser started crashing (on start up) and I had to do a factory reset.

Sorry about that. I was replying to someone else. I could use opera, but I really like the native browser much better. It doesn't load pages as fast but I like the way it operates once the pages have loaded much better than opera mini. I have fast internet here, so that helps.
I just experienced this problem... Changed the string to desktop and I can no longer start the browser after that. Was almost ready to reset, but decided to finally root and play around. If anyone else is interested, this did allowed me to start the browser again (reset the settings):
adb shell
$ su
# cd /dbdata/databases
# mv com.android.browser com.android.browser-buggy
# mkdir com.android.browser

What "trick" is that? Were you able to use the browser in the desktop mode or it helped to make the browser work again?

Edited... It made the browser workable again, but no I did not try desktop mode again.
Same for me. Here's how I fixed the crashing;
Settings > applications > manage applications > web > clear data
Still can't get the setting to work.
I have tested this extensively, and every option on the debugging menu causes the browser to crash until app data is wiped. However, this issue is also on the vibrant, leading me to believe it will be fixed eventually by Samsung.

Is there not a option on the websites that say full website? usually at the bottom
Or
Use dolphin browser it has settings which make it go mobile desktop and something else
In the stock sense browser, should work in the android browser too, type about:debug, go into settings and change uastring to desktop
i use Dolphin HD
there you can set the user agent to "Desktop" and the normal version of all websites is used
Does dolphin support flash?

I wrote about:debug in android default browser ported from 2.3 but nothing happened. Maybe the URL should be something else?

If I remember correctly (haven't used the stock browser in a while) nothing should happen. When you write that in the adress field you get more options in settings. So check out settings to see if you have stuff like "User Agent" there.
Menu>More>Settings>User Agent>Desktop. That is for the AOSP browser.

I cant find this user agent or get the about to work

Stupid question but you hit enter after about:debug right?
Where can I get the ported browser?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I use Dolphin Browser HD & mini, they could change user agent very easily. You just need to go to settings to find them. : )

They say they only support flash on Froyo 2.2 or above. Mine is 2.2, flashes works great.
1. Go to browser
2. Type about:debug (I don't remember if you need to press enter, just try it if you want)
3. Nothing will happen visually and nothing really is supposed to happen.
4. Now, press menu
5. Select more
6. Scroll down to Advanced Settings
7. Select UA string
8. Select Desktop
if you can't see UA string, i don't know what else you can do
I have a Liquid A1 with Froyo 2.2 (LCR rom).
Unfortunately, I cannot view the full version of spome sites, even switching to "desktop user agent".
I tryed in Dolphin HD, in the default browser after the "debug" option, in Opera Mobile, Miren, etc...
For example, no way to go to the full view of this site:
http://www.primocanalesport.it/
(it's a local sport page: I would try the live streaming of their video news when I'm on the go)
I *always* finish to:
http://www.primocanalesport.it/mobile/
even manually writing the URL, with the user agent set on desktop mode.
Someone could help me??
Hey, I just install the CM7...39full night version...

for example, I enter the www.cnn.com. it will redirect me to the m.cnn.com
it seem that the website consider my gtablet as a mobile phone,
how to change it? I just want to view the webpage in the normal way!

Hi savage0
Go to the browser setting and change the UA (User Agent) string to desktop then you will get full web site. Or you can download Dolphin HD or Miren they easy setting for the UA string also.

Hi,
I've been trying to do this myself but I can't find one labeled just "Desktop", there is "Linux Desktop", "Mac Desktop", and "IE6"
I've tried "IE6" (closest I thought to Windows) but no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
yes, I found that there is only "android" "Frpyo" "Eclair" "Linux Desktop" "Mac Desktop" "Iphone" in the setting of "user agent" (now the default is "android" which will redirect the website to the mobile version)
I also tried to found the option which only marked by "desktop", but there isn't...
so I tried the Linux Desktop, it is OK...
but I don't what is the different between them
I tried it and it worked, was really trying to use it to go to the full version of the Google Reader page...but...there seems to be a scrolling problem with that page. But I guess I will use it for everything else.
Thanks.
Hello dear people
i just got my HTC sensation and im getting a really nasty problem:
my phone shows only internetpages in mobile view and even i chance settings not to show up mobile view, it does it though!!
has anybody the same Problem oder can anybody help me out with this issue?
Help is greatly appreciated!
While I am still using my Nexus One, as the release of the sim-free Sensation is almost a full month in the future - and therefore can't say if there is a settings toggle that would solve your problem:
Dolphin HD is a great alternative to the default browser, it allows for changing the user agent which will allow you to view all sites in default desktop-view: https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser&feature=search_result
Most mobile versions of popular websites really are rubbish, and many of them miss the basic functionality of efficiently switching to their sites desktop view.

Well thanks for this answer, tried the dolphin browser and surprisingly it works on this browser
Think i gonna use this browser in future so problem is basically solved.
Now i got a new problem: all wallpaper which i tried to use wont scroll on the home screen not even those wallpapers which are saved on the phone on standard... can anybody help me out? On my old desire, all wallpapers are scrolling!
some sites force mobile sites automatically no matter what. look on the page for a link to view full site. maybe that'll help?
On some sites there are links for the full site indeed but i dont want to always cklick these links first. On my old desire all pages are displayed in desktop view wenn i disable the mobile view in the browser settings. On my sensation it always shows all page in mobile view whatever i set the option to. But with dolphin browser it works and by the way im starting to like this browser more then the standard one
To my second problem, can anybody tell me why wallpapers wont scroll one the home menu on sensation?

From my experience even if you uncheck mobile in browser settings some sites still come up as mobile. My solutions to this is I type the full web address of the site I want to visit. As In www.wisn.com. Every since I started typing the full web address into the stock browser all sites come up as the full website. When I found this out I uninstalled dolphin. Hopes this helps.
Edit:
Besides the full web address typing, I found some decent info while searching threw Google and posted a thread in general. It might help or it might not. But its something you might want to check out and give it a shot.

This actually doesn't do anything unless you select the option for Manual UA string and enter the code manually, but either way, it reverts on reboot.
I can't seem to figure out how to turn off mobile websites. I can't stand it I need full websites.
Also is there a way to put an actual fm radio on here so it doesn't use data?

Look up how to change your user agent for the web thing.
Short answer for the FM radio is no.
Sorry.

Open your browser and type in about:debug and hit go.
Then hit the menu button and select "settings".
Scroll down to the bottom where it says "User Agent" and tap that, selecting Android, Desktop, or iPhone.
Still wont work for some websites. Check trigger errors in the debug output for more information.

I may try that but I downloaded opera and set it as default and I actually like it. so may just stick with it.
Skyfire browser also gives you the option to switch between Android (mobile websites) and Desktop (full websites).

i thought i remember somewhere an app maybe that will allow the websites to be viewed in full, but cant remember where.
I know when i tether my laptop to my cell, i use an app that changes from full into mobile view, so it dont use so much data.
good luck.

Depends on the browser. Opera, Dolphin HD browser and Skyfire allow agent switching. On my Opera, with the agent set to Desktop everything is like my laptop............I hate sites in mobile mode !! I used all the above browsers and the latest Opera has stuck with me. Dolphin is also great, but Skyfire is a little iffy for my tastes. Haven't used Firefox too much.
My 2 cents.
EDIT : Oh yeah, I remember why i like Opera..........Adobe Flash rendering in Opera is very good..........I watch entire live sports events with no hiccups.
