[Q] Root and Movie rental - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of the reasons that I have not yet rooted is because I would loose the ability to rent movies.
My question is if there is a simple work around. Has anyone tested how the movie application verifies root?
If all it does is tries to find su, then renaming su to su_tmp (or whatever) would allow movies to be watched, and then it would be easy to "re-root" by just renaming, or making a softlink, to get su back when you are done watching the movie.
On the other hand, if it is checking if the xoom is locked, is checking recovery, or something kernel specific, it could be harder to fool it.
Has anyone managed to watch a movie on Xoom that was rooted, and has a none-default kernel and non-default recovery?
Thanks,
--Adam

Not happening. Even if they found a way google would have to patch that instantly.

What's not happening? Someone to test it out?
Turns out it is not that easy for an application to determine if a computer has been rooted, so google might just be checking for su. If so, what would they patch? So that is why I am asking if movie rental only works with the default kernel, or if it depends on just the presence of su.

[Q] What's your reason for rooting

So I've rooted devices before, usually I have a reason to. What's are some good reason's you guys are rooting the transformer. Is it doing something you're not able to without root. Some must have apps? Or just because you're a control freak? Also any side effects that you see?
I haven't rooted yet, but this is why I'd do it (I know it seems silly) I want to use titanium backup to install app data files so i dont have to play all those levels over again in angry birds.

I guess I mostly want to be in control. I already needed root to copy the XOOM notification sounds and install SetCPU. If I pay for a device I want to be able to use it without (unreasonable) restrictions.

[Q] question about how the app "superuser" works... (behind the scenes)

Hello,
I have a question about how the "superuser"-app works behind the scenes.
As far as i know: The "superuser"-app can be used to grant root-permissions only to the programs, that I want. All other programs are still not running in root. Is this right?
If I'm right on that... Why does only the app super-user does have root after rooting the phone via e.g. the zergrush-exploit and other apps still not have root permissions although the phone has been rooted? Isn't there a security gap ?
In my point of view it could be possible, that any other app could take the root-rights just like the app "superuser" does it. If I'm not right, I don't get it, why only "superuser" gets root and all other apps can't get root unless "superuser" gives them root...
Isn't it a security gap? I just don't get it... how is this achieved?
Is it absolutely (or nearly absolutely) safe, that no other programs can get root-permissions when I use "superuser"? As I already said before, I'm really curious about, why or how this can be achieved and "guaranteed"...
Thanks in very much advance.
Kind regards
mr. salt
I think it's barely possible, that I'm the only one who is interessted how this app is working or wondering about the same security issues, which come along with my questions above?
I would appreciate an sophisticated answer very much!

Ok let me see if I can explain this the best way I can. When you root your phone you are giving yourself the ability to run apps that require root. This ability is turned off by default in android. Now lets compare this to Linux, when you run an app as root you have t run the sudo command and then enter your password each and every time you want to run it with rooted rights. SuperUser is an app that when prompted will remember the selection you choice so you dont have to allow it every time you run the app and with out opening a terminal to type the commands to allow it to run as root.
You are looking at the app of super user more as a stand alone app instead of being a front end UI for the commands that you would have to run to get the same out come.
As for the security, to be honest the best security is common sense. As it is a simple fact that PC, phone, internet, server ect security is only as good as the hacker trying to get into it. If he/she really wants your info they are gonna get it. Take a look at what happened to the US DOD and they have a far more secure setup then anything on the market.

[Q] New owner of a Note Pro 12.2 - Questions

Hello everybody,
I just bought a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (unlocked LTE edition). I have to say that although I am quite an experienced Windows user, I am totally new to Android. So far I really enjoy this tablet and I am trying to use it as at least 70-80% as a laptop replacement (if possible).
I have some issues though and I would like to ask for your help:
1. Adobe Flash Player: I was reading that unfortunately Android 4.4 does not support flash player any more. Although I am also not a big fan of flash, it seems that is required quite often (e.g. for youtube videos, facebook games, etc...). I found on the XDA forum in another thread that it should be possible to use flash player with the Dolphin web browser. I would like to ask you if there is a way to install flash also on Chrome or Firefox.
2. Youtube: I often get the message that the content is not available on mobile devices. Is there any way to bypass this somehow? Also is there a way to always load desktop websites instead of the mobile ones?
3. RemotePC: I tried RemotePC which comes pre-installed with the device and I like it quite a lot (although it's a bit slow). However, I have not found a way to transfer files from my laptop to the Note. Could you please help me with that? Also, are there maybe any other apps which perform better than the RemotePC?
4. Media Player: Whuch media player would you suggest? Is there a media player such as VLC for PC which can handle all different video and audio files (MKV, AC3, AVI, etc...)
5. Rooting: I have read some stuff regarding rooting and it seems that it's really worth it. I would like to ask you if is it possible to root Note Pro 12.2 and if yes then how to unroot it in case I would need to use my warranty.
I know that these are quite a lot of questions and I would be really grateful if you could help me!
Thanks a lot!

1. The problem with using Flash is that the -browsers- won't support it in KitKat. I can only get it to work with Dolphin. I use Lightning + for everything else, though.
2. Maybe this: http://imgur.com/zc2Kzan. Otherwise, I just watch the videos using Dolphin set to 'Desktop' mode.
3. To transfer files, I use either Ex File Explorer (free) or Solid Explorer (paid, but super awesome). I use a different program to connect to my PC remotely, though, and it is fairly quick: Real VNC Viewer which used to be $10, but is now free. I have TightVNC installed on my computer.
4. I use Archos or MX Player. Archos is beautiful, but you have to buy the codec pack to play everything else. MX Player comes in free and paid, but I don't care for the interface. The combination of both (I've not paid for the codecs) plays every file streaming from my computer. I'm sure if I pay for the codec pack, Archos will play everything.
5. I've rooted, and I'm 100% satisfied. I have a lot of apps that require root. I'm sure unrooting is possible, but I will never have the need. Plus, once you're rooted the Knox counter is tripped.
Perfect... Thank you very much for your help!!
I have another question regarding youtube... Is it possible to continue play the video in the background when I switch tabs or I open another app?
Also what is this Knox counter and what does it mean that it will be tripped? If I eventually root the tablet, do I have to re-install all the downloaded apps from the beginning?

There are apps that can do that, yes. PVSTAR+ is one. I suppose with multi-window mode you could have YouTube playing in one window and doing other things in the other window? I've not tried.
I'm not sure what the Knox counter is, actually. I believe the original purpose was to show if the device's software had been modified. When you root, Knox shows the device was tampered with. When I rooted, I didn't have to re-install anything.

While the Knox counter will tell Sammy and everyone whether or not your device has been tampered with / rooted etc, its primary purpose is for the enterprise. The Knox partition (if you enable it) creates a "secure" work environment which is what many companies want with their mobile devices. Software policies can be easily put into place which read the Knox counter and if it has been tripped will treat the knox device as either 1) a typical unsecured device and let it on the network however the admins allow unsecured devices on, or 2) prevent the device from hooking up to the network even with a knox partition in tact.
Knox is Samsung's way of trying to break the Windows / iOS (and once upon a time BB) lock on the secure corporate / government world. I actually think the idea is brilliant as you have two partitions, one to install all your home crap on, and a tight secure partition strictly for work.
My thoughts exactly. Knox has nothing to do with the hardware warranty.

Joying 2gb Intel problems/questions

So I just wanted to make a thread for these units where people can ask/answer questions specific to these devices. May help others as the info online isn't the best, including their own forum site which I have unable to access with a few weeks due to persistent ads...... ?
To get the ball rolling;
I have updated to the new official firmware with the new widget launcher, I like the launcher, well the fact that I have large icons and can have widgets on the home screen.
My issues are,
1) when I start the car (dormancy mode) I am trying to get tasks to run automatically (open rocket player, play audio etc.) Problem is there seems to be a built in task killer that kills macrodroid (which I'm using for my tasks). I have tried autostart apps but these don't trigger as the HU is coming out of dormancy mode and not actually booting. Anyone have a work around for this? If I could get Macrodroid to run I could solve the rest using macros (tasks)
2) Since the new update with the new launcher i no longer have Voice to text, i installed the google app but this caused the launcher to crash and only left me with the recent apps screen, luckily I was able to get back into play store from here and uninstall google app again which brought all back working again.
3) When playing a podcast (Bluetooth streaming from phone) and I want to change to rocket player to play music, if I just tap play on the rocket widget the media starts playing but I get no sound until I open the app, kind of defeats the purpose of the widget being there!
4) when I first installed the unit I had no problems with the illuminate function (headlights dim screen and turn on button lights) this worked for about a month and then for no reason just stopped, now if I turn on my lights the button lights flick on for about half a second and then turn off again, its not an issue with the lights as they work fine when I chose the timed option. I haven't checked my 12v feed yet as I'm guessing its OK due to the flicker, it will happen every time I turn the lights on.
I have tried reset, reflash combos about 6 times at this stage but always with the same results.
I know there are options to change the ROM but I would like to keep it stock for now just in case I need to return it.

The new official ROM?? Which one? The 5 March version? And did you pick the right one of the two? And which unit do you have?
Mention all that! This makes your remark/question useless as people trying to help first need to ask you that.

Again: which ROM are you on? You should mention that. ROMS before 2017 contain bugs, so do they in 2017 but at least a lot less. So make sure you are on a newer ROM. If you already are, like you mentioned above, mention the version. That saves people from asking for the obvious. Before you post read the rules.
Look at this thread and this thread
First of all: Search the forum.
And secondly: Search the forum.
And third: Be concrete. Mention versions, forums, etc. You don't even mention which head unit you have.
I was looking but could only find info on the 1gb model and the thread about the release of the 2gb model.
Thanks for the info but you don't have to be a **** about it.
I missed stuff when searching, I couldn't access the joying forum, I thought saying "their own forum site" would have cleared that. I couldnt access the site to find out if there had been updates, at the time i was on the ONLY UPDATED ROM with the new launcher with customizable widgets.
When i found NoKill I thought it was for steering wheel controls which I don't have so I moved on.
When I asked about model numbers on the joying forum (when I could access it) I was made out to be an idiot too because "They are all the same thing" so forgive me for thinking that. Mine is the JY-UL135N2
Again, Thanks for the info but you don't have to be a cranky prick about it, this is a forum isn't it? Used for discussion and help?
I was only saying something like this with info in one place would be good, if its out there already then sorry, mods can delete and ill crawl back into my hole of idiotness
Yes, I was annoyed but I did give you a number of helpful links and be honest: you were not very exact in your phrasing.
And w.r.t. the roms: They are on the joying blog59 page which is also mentioned several times on several postitions in this forum, and you could also have found it from the "normal" joying website carjoying.com
Even though I was annoyed I tried to help you. If your phrasing was more concrete that would have been a lot faster. And you still don't mention which ROM you are currently using, so nobody can give you an exact answer.
You can be angry with me, but clear communication would have prevented my irritated reply.
I am on the 2017222 rom but will be updating to latest tomorrow, have downloaded just need to do the HU side of it. I can get access to the Joying site using your link and only your link, not sure why or whats going on as this includes the main joying site too.
I plan on updating, attempting root then install NoKill.
I am giving the info I have, I don't know a lot about these devices and although I have rooted phones and tablets before I have never done anything like this.
You did give me helpful links and I thank you for that but please don't be too angry with people asking questions. I realise you know how this works but others don't and are afraid of damaging the device. Before your link which I used to access the updates page I had no way of checking for updates as I couldn't get onto the page

There is no real need to update to the March 5 ROM if you already have the 22 Feb ROM.
The ROM is rooted. What you mean is that you want to install a SuperUser app like SuperSU or Kingroot or the like.
You don't need to SuperSU your ROM. You can install the NoKill version just like that as the ROM is rooted. You simply don't have the nice, userfriendly superuser apk on the system.

So there is no real advantage to the March 5 ROM?
Oh, I didn't know it was rooted still, thought they stopped that on the 2gb devices.. I'm not even sure if I need root for anything, all I wanted it for was to get to the /system... folder to copy NoKill to. Can I get there without SuperSU app using ES file explorer? Am I safe to delete the existing nokill.apk in there 1st and then copy in the new file? It won't cause any issues not having the apk for the few seconds? (Probably a stupid question)

The Sofia server is loaded upon boot and stays in memory. So no problem there.
Best thing to do via adb.
Code:
adb push Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /sdcard/
adb shell "su -c mount -o remount,rw /system"
adb shell "su -c cp /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk.old"
adb shell "su -c cp /sdcard/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0"
adb shell "su -c chmod 644 /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk"
adb shell "su -c ls -l /system/app/Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0"
last command does nothing toyour system. It should only list the new apk and the old apk.old.
and then reboot your unit.
I know you are going to hate me for this but any time I've tried pushing files using adb I end up messing it up and bricking it.
Looks like the illumination problem was due to the car.. The illumination wire was in a different place to the joying connector, I repinned it and working now but still doesn't explain how I had it working fine for a month.. Really weird, had issues with 12v switched and constant 12v too.. Had to swap them around.. Seems to be Kia's doing and not joying.. Very strange
Macrodroid not running in background FIXED
Hey there! You probably fixed the issue with macrodroid by now but I had the same issue and I fixed it by installing Macrodroid as a system app. That did the job for me. Just did a reboot and waited for macrodroid to come up.

Dangers of rooting

Hi,
I just bought a Oneplus 6 256gb version and now I'm thinking about rooting it for the likes of adaway and lucky patcher.
But what exactly are the dangers? I researched quite a while but I'm still not sure if it's safe enough. I am only planning on rooting, so no custom rom. So a few questions here:
1. Can I still update Oxygen OS after root? Would I need to reinstall Magisk (root) if yes?
2. Is it really that unsafe to use banking apps with a rooted device?
3. Anything else that affects a phone with root in a negative way?
I have rooted my old galaxy s5 quite a bit, so I know how to not brick my phone. So, yes, I know I could potentially brick it if somethings goes wrong.
Thanks for the help.
Elekted
You can update while rooted but you will have to reflash the Magisk zip as the new update will install the stock boot.img and Magisk patches the boot image. So with a stock boot image, you will need to flash Magisk again for root.
On the banking apps, yes. I do not use banking apps on my phone, but I use Android pay. The reason being, is I have a friend that works for Chase Bank in the fraud department for mobile devices. He said the risk is when you are adding a credit card to the Android app, never in using the app to make a payment as they generate a token for the specific amount of that transaction and they use a ID and not your credit card number in the transaction.
And nothing will affect your phone negatively unless you do something to cause the issue. It's virtually always user error. Know what you're doing and if your new to modding, don't be a guinea pig or early adopter. Let others who know what they are doing and report on what works and doesn't. That's the best advice I can give you.
1. You can upgrade your Oxygen OS but u will lost your root Xposed etc.
2. If you know all application installed in your phone and you know who published it, then it will be safe (don't install such like *Free Minecraft Giveaways* lol)
3 .Oneplus is NOT Samsung. Unlock and root your phone will not cause permanent negative effects.
Another thing to be aware of is that unlocking the bootloader (not the rooting) will cause your devices widevine security level to go down. This means netflix/amazon video will be limited non HD resolution. You can still cast the video to your tv at HD or higher resolution though.
Does this also affect youtube and all other streaming devices or just amazone prime and netflix?
@Eric214 thank you for the quick response. With negative effects i was thinking battery, security or other issues. Or how peltus mentioned the issue with widevine. Are there any other apps i can't use anymore after root or limitations?

I assume that's to try to prevent people from ripping data from a video stream and pirating/distributing it?
That's why I only bought netflix with the intention to use it on my TV when I'm bored of all the stuff I've downloaded on my computer lolol

You can use Android pay with Magisk but if you install Xposed, you will fail safety checks
1.
It's really easy with A/B... You install the update, automatic or manual via the system updater. Then BEFORE rebooting, you install Magisk again to the inactive slot. Reboot, that's it. I never had such easy updates before.
2.
When rooting a phone, you usually read the details and how all this works. You keep your phone up to date. Every app requesting root rights needs your confirmation. Look before acknowledging and use reliable sources especially for apps requiring root. But with root, you can use an adblocker, a low level firewall, a good backup software and more to keep yourself away from risky content behind banners.
3.
You can relock the bootloader and flash the stock image and the phone is in its original state.
Beside that, if you do not use Xposed, with Magisk Hide I did yet not find an app which refused to work on my phone. Also Android Pay does work.

Thank you that i exactly what i wanted to know. Guess im going to root my oneplus then.
This phone seems pretty brick-resistant. Lots of people getting into bootloops, but fixes are easy. I haven't seen a single hard-brick yet.
OP provides a tool for getting out of major errors, and it seems to work well.
