Generally I would use the search box or google for that matter to search for your root method then click the FAQ or help section. I'm not trying to come off as condescending here, but I know the use of search is heavily stressed here on XDA. Also, a little better clarity in the post other than

would be very helpful. Look here though... Either uninstall HTC sync or install just the drivers which are also now available from HTC. I did not try with my root but I heard simply stopping the HTC Sync service in task manager on the pc worked...

@OP:
Install HTC sync, then uninstall, it will leave the drivers intact.
Make sure anti-virus is disabled/windows security essentials is uninstalled.
And check the faq, as mentioned.

If I may expand on this. There will be 3 HTC entries after installing sync. You only want to remove the one that says sync, not all 3.

Well that happened to me when trying to do it through the usb connection to the phone as well as through my micro-sd to usb (not to full sd then usb) adapter. Try putting the microsd in a standard SD adapter then doing it that way. It is what worked for me after failing multiple times the other way.

I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959 This one is Gingerbread

Good sir I can not thank you enough for helping me get my phone back. i don't even mind all the bloatware now. Too bad I can't use the thanks button more than once. I really appreciate it.
Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

Just found out at Best Buy that my phone is crap. The memory is out and I have no apps installed, my HD card is empty except for the standard stuff, and I get error that I need to free up memory or something like that. Guy told me to UNroot my phone and call AT&T.
So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????
thanks so much,

It hasnt yet given me a chance to enter the key code. im only assuming i have to enter it cause it is not taking the code it pops up with when you enter your information. I Just bought a PC so I can to root my phones better without waiting for a MAC version of every thing. If anyone knows the step I am missing, please let me know. This was the missing step for me i could only get it to work once i uninstalled HTC Sync..
The Quickest way in solving this issue is just to install the HTC Drivers. With that, follow the Guide on the Dev section and it should be okay.
For future reference of Linux users who may find this thread, don't forget to run revolutionary, fastboot, or adb as a root user.
That'll usually solve all that plagues you with problems like "waiting for device" and such.
"sudo ./revolutionary"
So I am trying to root a brand new Inspire 4G I picked up last week.
But I can't even get adb access. The driver is not working. I have tried the ones on the SD card, the one from the HTC site, the ones from Google, etc.. I just tried forcing the Google driver after modifying the inf to include the device (something I read to try in another post) And it comes up as an ADB Interface Composite Device, but says I need to restart, and still doesn't work at that point.
I restart and it automatically installs a different driver thats shows up in device driver as " My HTC" with a yellow Exclamation mark.?
I have tried uninstalling Sync and all the drivers asociated with anything to do with the phone in device manager. But it still keeps installing as that "My HTC".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
The best, and IMO flawless way to root using Ace Advance Hack Kit is to make a Ubuntu Live CD and run it from Ubuntu. Just too much crap to worry about disabling in Windows.

Given you've tried Live CD.
You are using a laptop? Or a PC (If PC, be sure to use the rear ports (manual), if laptop try a different USB header (usually the side of the laptop with the most inputs [usb, firewire, network, VGA, HDMI]))
For windows, you didn't say that you've killed processes as mentioned in the manual. Ctrl-Shift-Esc (windows) will take you to the process list. Be sure ALL processes are killed (Like Bonjour from Apple)
And another windows thing... ejecting the device (say after you've moved a file to the phone) will cause this.
And, I'm a little confused... You said one versoin of aahk earlier, then another later in the thread. Can you please link the forum post where you have downloaded AAHK from?
Not that this is likely a solution, but it will elimiate a few* things.

Whoa whoa whoa. Downgrading the hboot is POSSIBLE. Holy frick, if this is true, I might hate myself for not discovering this sooner...
EDIT: The toolkit requires running Linux (which I don't have and am not real comfortable with) and involves hard bricking the phone...think I'll keep my hboot for now. Needing to flash the boot.img is kind of annoying, but it wasn't a big deal until I could no longer get fastboot to work...

Yeah, like I said, HTC Sync didn't solve my problem for whatever reason.
However, it occurred to me that I've never had to worry about Android drivers with Mac and Linux, and I was able to use fastboot without a problem from a Ubuntu LiveCD, without resorting to downgrading my hboot. Granted it meant downloading and configuring the android tools in Ubuntu, and I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis, but it's okay as a workaround, and this whole fiasco has me seriously considering switching my laptop to Ubuntu from Win8 (I could dual-boot), but I don't really have enough disk space for 2 operating systems).

Did you uninstall whatever HTC drivers you had before installing HTC sync?

I have windows 8 and when I first got my one x I installed PDANet and HTC Sync Manager. That should solve the driver issue. PDANet pretty much fills in the gap for drivers no matter what phone.

Ok I had same issue when I was beta testing win 8 in Summer. You need to go to device manager and click the show hidden devices on menu bar. It will show you all devices not plugged in. Next find andriod , it should be greyed out. If you don't find install win 64 bit driver. It will still not recongize android when plugged in so click greyed out android and choose Manuel update. Then click browse for driver and go into win 64 drivers and manually choose. There is a lot of utube and other tutorials if you Google manuel install HTC drivers for win 8. Hope this helps ya. Let me know how it worked out

but you may find it on androiddrivers if you search you will find it in How to Root HTC One X! pleas share the link her so the other find it
I was able to get mine working with the combo of
1. uninstalling any HTC sync or sync manager and the HTC BMP USB Driver. Basically anything HTC.
2. Install HTC sync. Not sync manager. Go to the HTC support page and you'll see both listed. If you go to the specific phone support page it might not be there. (One S doesn't have the sync program, just sync manager iirc.)
3. Download PDAnet. When installing, It'll give a warning that you already have drivers installed and ask if you want to fix them or leave as is. I chose it to fix and it went though its process and I had working drivers after that.
I think this was already suggested before. I going back and giving thanks wherever due after this post. (On the mobile app right now)
Other easy way if you're using a One S is to download Hasoon2000's All-On-One Toolkit. He's updated the drivers for windows 8. I haven't tried it yet as mine are working so haven't had the need. I would assume his tool for any of the other phones he supports would have the updated drivers too.
