Need custom ROM or Kernel for CIFSMANAGER? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it. I"m on the just updated 3.1. Installed CIFSMANAGER, but don't seem able to map a drive. Get 'Error running exec'.
Just to verify, do I need a custom ROM or Kernel to use it?
[EDIT]
Or maybe I need to be rooted?

definitely need root.... also need the cifs.ko lib, not sure if that is included in stock 3.1 or not.... i just chose to go with primordial 3.1, since i knew it had it and it was working.... had to downgrade to .9, wipe, root, and install.

I may end up doing something like that. Holding off for a while to see if the thing is solid enough to not have to return.
I don't know about that lib either. Just went to the site for the app, and it did indicate it needs root. Haven't read much yet over there. Will read some more on it.

if you want to check for the lib, it's location should be /system/lib/modules/cifs.ko
also not sure if there's an easy way to root 3.1, but rooting .9 was pretty simple, just need adb (miniadb is fine, no need for the entire SDK)

Thanks for that. Just checked, and it is not there. I would think that if all that is 'required' is root, then installing CIFSMANAGER would install that lib. But who knows. I presume if that is the case then the reason I don't have it is because I am not rooted.
Interestingly, I can get to the server I want to with ES Filemanager. But I think it is using SMB. Also, I cannot get to it via other apps, which is what I presume CIFSMANAGER does for us.
I suspect I'll hold off with root until one comes out for 3.1. But I will likely be applying a ROM one of these days. I've been on custom ROMS on my Captivate for quite a while.

Android-Wifi-Tether on Sprint 2.1 RUU

I went from a stock 1.5 to 2.1 using the Sprint 2.1 RUU and all is well. I understand it's a dev build and as such is already root but when I trying installing android-wifi-tether (both 2.0 and 1.6) it all looks well except when I touch the icon to start and it fails. The 1.6 version did report I didn't have root.
What do I need to do in ADB/shell to ensure the proper permissions are there for AWT? This is the last thing I want to get working and I'm happy.
Do I need to remount the filesystem as rw? Add superuser? Not sure what's needed.
Please help.

I haven't done anything since flashing the 2.1 RUU. What steps do I need to do to get busybox and su working?
if you installed the RUU that was just 'leaked' (from what i understood our 2.1 builds are based off this ruu already). The build does not include busy box or anything for that matter that is required for wireless tether-
damageless said:
Here is a link to the latest RUU from Sprint.
You cannot simply extract it. This still has root since it is a test release. I recommend just doing an adb pull of your system directory after you flash it. Don't do this when the final one comes out or else you might be stuck without root.
You will need to add busybox, patch sh and su, and make sure that you do another recovery image and such. I also recommend adding Superuser.apk and stuff. If you use the Desire build.prop, you can get most of the protected apps working.
Enjoy.

Add SU and make sure you have USB debugging on (Menu/Settings/Applications/Development/USB Debugging). This is needed so when you try to start the WIfi Tether app that is says do you allow root permissions.

How do I add su? Any guides on here. Don't understand why busy box is required for wifi tether.

Who told you that the RUU was rooted already? It's not. Why would it be? Sprint has no interest in you being root.
As for why do you have to install busybox? Because the application requires it.
It's rooted because it's a dev release. It just doesn't appear to have busybox or superuser installed

The leak actually is rooted. It's an engineering leak, so root can work his magic- but only from the adb shell.
why do you need superuser?
superuser requires root, if you had root, you wouldnt need it.
you can just dl the wifi tether for root from the market
program and it would work right?

I'm not very happy with installing and running things on my phone without knowing quite what they do. you go first
Yeah, report back if it breaks anything. I wanna root mine and this way seems easy.
LOL no way.. u 1st.
It worked, but unfortunately it has to be applied on each reboot. not a sticky root. I know my low post count will make you sketchy of this point. all I can say is that it is true. dropped it on my SD, used astro to access it, installed, and it worked just like blackrain, one click. except not sticky.
works great. gotta do it every boot.
Yep me to tried it and worked so how would this work on installing toms though since a reboot get rid of the root?
Oh my god i wanna do it. Its gotta be legit.. Right?

Well it got rooted, going to reboot and see
Hmmm. So if its not sticky, its pretty much pointless to me. Gonna way for the real Root to come. I mean the phone just came out so it shouldnt be long.
I'm still showing sudo permissions on reboot, going to test a few things. like the overclock app, and terminal access.
EDIT: Confirmed, SetCPU for Root cannot request permission. not a sticky root, just as it says.
so what does this do for me, i did it but i can't get into where all the apps i've downloaded are and stuff, i'm confused. what can i do with this root?
can you write to system from within android? if so root explorer will let you easily remove stock apps
no you can't due to current limitations
There is no rw for /system currently. < this should be written in bold and stickied.
I find their lack of information disturbing. If it really needs to be run every boot, why don't they say that? Their site doesn't have a single bit of info on it.
Well there is the long shell way.
Can I use this to create a perfect backup of my phone so I can restore it at any time?
actually when you do it on the phone it tells you that it needs to be run every reboot. so we can't get rid of sprint applications through the phone because of a lack RW for the system, but can we do this pc side???
i'm in boot mode what do i do so i can get rid of sprint apps and what not, how do i do a nandroid, and how can i back up all of my aps.
Anyone know what this means?

it also appears to patch:
16 files in system/bin
etc/wimax/
etc/firmware/fw_bcm4329.bin and (ap)
31 files in framework
28 files in lib
2 files in lib/modules - bcm4329.ko and sequans_sdio.ko

Even if you rooted via toasts method, i would not update until a custom ROM is put out with the update included. You could lose root ability forever.
Anyone know the location of system updates are stored on the phone? I am trying to locate using the adb shell but have had no luck finding the download yet.

I'd recommend not installing it at all until the devs here have had a chance to go through it and release it themselves. You risk loosing your root if you don't. Then follow their release instructions to apply it.

The official froyo release from HTC / Sprint will definitely contain all the "Sprint Junk" and if you've given up root to one of these updates and go to apply that it will all come back. You may never get root again in order to re - clean it up once you apply froyo.
Be patient. It won't take the devs here long to cook up an update for us. Flipz had the rooted .6 update rom out in 24 hours or so...
.....
Just took a look inside the zip file. All the apk files are there, including the sprint junk...
Just installed....all is well with root...

just use one of the deodexed roms(like this one-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341616), which will let you edit the libs of the Flashplayer. use the Libflashplayer.so hack that is on xda replace it and give it the proper premission and BAM!!!! you got hulu
have been watching hulu on my phone since melvin dropped his first rom.

I know that but what I consider stock is a ROM that hasn't been messed with at all.
I normally run Cyanogen Mod 7 but it's not available yet.
No, I don't like the crap bloatware apps.
Thing is, I will not die without Hulu and it's not enough reason for me to grab the first thing that comes along and install it.
I am actually enjoying the stock rom on this phone. Can't do everything I am used to but, I have to say that it's been pretty nice.
I will likely consider Cyanogen when it comes out for this phone but I am going to have to think pretty hard at this point. That rom has caused nothing but issues for me on multiple phones in regards to GPS which I rely on quite a bit. I know there are fixes and I got my GPS working after a lot of hassle on my Evo but never had success fixing it on my Inspire. Been nice having my GPS working without an issue on my Skyrocket. So... At this point, I just don't want to mess with the stock rom until I have a chance to evaluate it more.
My phone is rooted and that seemed to be all I needed to edit the needed files in the past but I guess not in this case.
Didn't Hulu come out recently and say they are supporting all Android devices now or was that Netflix?

I agree the Stock rom on the SR is great thats why im not even worried about not having 5 or 6 roms to choose from. i thinks its pretty nice as is. but i like to be able to edit certain files. and i think all you need it root explorer and you CAN edit pretty much everything on the phone.
but i didnt notice that you cant edit the build.prop, or the libs. i had to pull the build prop and edit on my comp and push it back.
and CM7 is a buggy nice little rom one of those things were you deal with the problems cuz its so damn nice. same with miui.

may i ask what files you are seeing in the Lib folder on the com.adaobe.flashplayer.
you shouuld have four files in there already right? i have seen it where it is empty sometimes and that means this wont work. ALSO if you unistall flash and reinstall flash 11 it repopulate the lib folder and i have had luck with this as well. once you get it will stick though. you wont have to this every reboot or anything.

New Phone, Broken USB Port

Hey all,
I just bought a SGS4G for my mom, but in order to get it at a cheap price we got one with a non functional USB port. We are going to use an external battery charger. My question is how (if at all) can we root and install clockwork mod on this bad boy? I remember back when I first got my SGS4G you could put an update.zip file on your SD card and use that, but that was a really long time ago and I imagine it's a really outdated way. So, with a broken USB port you can't use Odin or Heimdall. How do you root and install clockwork mod without Odin or Heimdall?
Thanks in advance!

As far as I am aware you need a usb connection to root. For cwm you can use kernel flasher from market but again I'm pretty sure that requires root function. Someone else may have some other ideas but w/o usb I think you might be hosed.
Thanks,
I know other phones can get root without USB. I'm hoping our phone is one of them. I thought I saw something about it recently in these forums, but I can't find it anymore >_<
The only root options I'm aware of are superoneclick or odin/heimdell ROM or kernel. Have you tried to look at the usb port and see if it's a loose connection? I fixit has a really good tear down. It's pretty simple to remove the cover and have a look.
I have not. I don't have the phone yet. I'll probably let my mom try it out and if she's uspet with the lag and what not of stock I'll take a look at the USB port if there's no other way
The recovery you were talking about pushing is Krylon360's CWM Final. It only works on Froyo-based ROMs. Though I have to admit that I do not know if you can push the necessary files with Root Explorer without having been rooted first (I use adb, so I'm not familiar with Root Explorer).

Good looking out but you need to be rooted to push those files. You have to mount system as R/W without root there is no way I know of to do that. I wonder if it would be possible to do through terminal emulator?

Yeah, I figured. You can remount via a terminal emulator with the command:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/blk/stl11 /system
However, that probably requires root, too.
