Dialer, that rules 'em all - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey.
So I've been looking or a dialer that basically supports all the features that Sense's one does:
- searching by name/surname/phone number
- displaying photo/facebook photo/gmail photo not just photo as most of available dialers do.
- scope through contacts
The one that almost supports all of them is TouchPal, but it seems that it does not show contact avatar from linked facebook account :?
Do you have any alternative?

I like GoContacts

Try Youlu Address Book..
Very nice dialer application...available free on Market

I tried them all, and none of them are perfect. They always miss one key aspect that Sense dialer handles very well and it's the only app I'm missing to switch to CM7. They either:
1) are terribly slow with T9 search through contacts or going through log or don't have scrolling handles to quickly scroll to certain letters
2) cannot search phone numbers
3) cannot search with accented characters and spaces
4) cannot search in the middle of the names
5) duplicating the output, if contacts have more phone numbers

Try GoContacts, as Fizzler73 suggested. Works very nicely for me since the post
Can search with accented character and spaces, middle names too and phones too
btw. I prefer to have duplicated contact when multiple numbers are present - that way I can tap on number I want to dial and I'm ready to talk. No additional selecting needed.

TouchPal actually supports facebook profile pictures, Since Android 2.2 the option to make data become private was added and facebook in it's never ending quest to annoy it's users marked ALL of it's data as private, so only stock apps ran by user 0 can access it...
this however is easily fixable all you have to do is modify the contacts table to not restrict fb contacts, here's the post with instructions.

Try Angel Dialer/Fast Dialer/Dialer One
i currently use Angel Dialer, but i have been using Fast Dialer for some time. its fast and works perfectly on CM7 Nexus One

Big letters for Contact

When You are searching for a contact in your car the contact are so small you can hardly see anything. Is there something to find contacts easier?
For example A-- B--- C-- D-- (alphabet) whenn searching?
the same as in TOMTOM?
If U Aim Well Into the search box (Find a Name) and Have The onscreen Keyboard On BIG Letters then ya Shouldn't Have a problem Aye!
This is a simple sollution but when you are driving your car and you want to search a contact it still is not the best way. I need something for people how are for example blind! Searching in alphabet A and then For example D etc etc
If you're just using the standard Contacts application built-into the PDA, just open contacts, and scroll down with your directional pad. After a little bit of scrolling, the letters of the alphabet will apper.
That what you looking for?

hahaha, i didn't knew there was a function like that! but still hard to use when driving
Well, this might help: in Contacts, go to Tools, then Options, then put tick on "Use Larg Fonts".
This might help little bit!
If you are looking for a contact to dial then may I suggest you take a look at a program called FingerClix. Check it out at http://www.imaginet-software.com It allows you to type the persons name using a phone dialer style keypad. As the letters are progressivly typed the contacts matching are displayed. It also displays all number for the contact (mobile, home office etc.) and you can then press on the appropriate icon to make the call. It is a much easier single finger option for in car dialing.
Hope it helps.
Ed
Or do wat I did and nick windows voice command from a file sharing site and use voice commands to dial people
Or you could simply try this freeware found in the Kitchen.

New Cap Owner - 1st time Android User

1st and foremost. I love this phone (GPS issues aside) it's perfect and the greatest thing that has ever happened to me which is sad.
A few Android questions (I'm running Cog 2.2 B6 with Launcher Pro):
Is there a way to organize your favorites or am I relegated to alphabetized favorites list?
Is there a way I can go directly to dial my favorites?
I am coming from an iPhone and I can't figure out how to select text that is off of the screen. Example: This is a textbox with a senten (how do I get to where the "ce" in sentence would be?)
Can I get Facebook push notifications?
Sometimes the facebook app goes into normal webpage view mode when I'm looking at my notifications, is that a bug?
For the call log is there a way where I can only see phone transactions and not text. It looks like I can view by missed, dialed OR received calls but not all 3. Otherwise I have to view all my texts as well.
Thanks,
JOe K.

First keep in mind that the current Froyo is a leaked pre-release so there are some small bugs, such as the email app issue with exchange.Alright abou the selecting text that is off the screen, I am not sure what you mean by this as normally text is wrapped? what application are you having this issue in? I.E, the browser. as far as customizing your favorites layout, I do not believe there is an option for that, only to switch to grid view. What I do since I can have up to 7 home screens (I only use 4) I use one home screen as a favorite contacts list (not sure if you can do this on launcher pro but I would guess yes) hold click home screen and select add shortcut> select either a contact that will bring up the call/email/sms/mms/navigate (if there is an address for contact) or instead of selecting a normal contact you can select "Direct Dial" it will allow you to select a contact as before but when you hit this contact on the home screen, instead of getting the normal options it will directly dial that contact. it's actually a pretty nice way to manage your favorite contacts.
Hope this helps a little! also before I forget you know when looking at a contact (including in the favorites list) you can swipe to the right on the contact to call or to the left to sms. a couple other things, you can pinch inward on the home screen in Touchwiz to zoom out to tiles of your home screens and the same is true in the TW app list, zooms out too see all app pages. the swipe to call/sms works regardless of you using launcher pro though, good luck!
Good idea about the homepage dedicated for contacts. I set that up.
It seems my sim and my google contacts have duplicated many entries. Is it possible to combine the two, so I don't have a SIM entry and a Google entry?
Also, how do I associate a picture with a contact?
Thanks,
JOe K.
To join contacts go into the contact itself, hit the menu button and then join contact.
After you join the contacts you may want you can go into the contacts app, hit menu, more, then display settings. You can tell the phone what type of contacts you want displayed. The only downside is all contacts are displayed when spelling out a name using the dialer.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Perhaps I'll delete the entries out of my SIM card and then I'll be able to easily modify my G-Mail contacts list.
Do you know of anyway how to delete all the entries for a SIM card?
Also, I still don't know how to associate pictures?
The easiest way that I know the delete all of the contacts on the sim is to display only the sim contacts and hit the menu button then delete. Then click all of the contacts one at a time. Once you are done then go back and display the contacts you want active.
To add a picture go into the contact, edit, then click on the stock picture, should have a little plus in it, and this will let you either take a picture our use one from your library.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Also if you hve FaceBook and you sync it (the widget or what ever) when you set it up deselect add all conteacts and select the ones who are also in your phone contacts list. Then when you join the two contacts (your phone/google copy) with you Facebook contact of the same person it use the FB profile picture in your contacts list and will change as that person changes there FB profile picture, it will also show there current FB status. also if you go to the activities tab in contacts after syncing FB it will show all the recent wall posts ect.

App that combines dialer and contacts?

Just switched from an xperia x10i to a droid x....
Xperia had contacts, call history and DIALER all in one application...
With the droid X, unless I am missing something, contacts and dialer are separated (though dialer has contacts, you can not change or edit them)...
So a big ol... WTF mate.
Also. New to verizon, how can I get rid of the 'In case of emergency' crap?

Motorola's stupid customizations include having contacts and dialer in different apps.
Try another dialer app, like Dialer One.
Try YouLu Address Book. It's awesome.

takePhone is a great one too, and looks really sharp. Has speed dials, predictive numbers, names, or business etc.
TouchPal dialer is another good one that includes contacts, favorites, and predictive dialing. I find that it runs faster than DialerOne.

With the exception of dialer one, none of them have an option to only display contacts with numbers. And that really bothers me as my contacts list is overflowing with fb contacts I can't call.
Okay, not to highjack, but on the same stem of question:
What does your favorite dialer app have that the stock doesn't. Besides the contacts thing. I think the phone contacts are fine for the app. I like the predictive dialing they included in the new update. it syncs with facebook pictures/links contacts which is really nice and keeps things organized. And as mentioned above, it ONLY links phone contacts instead of my hundreds of random facebook friends.
And for this exercise, exclude Youlu from any possible suggestions. It isn't a dialer if it doesn't have a * or # key for god sake.
The reason I ask is because there is so many, and there must be one that just blows everything else away. But DialerOne looked really boring to me. Felt like I was just using the stock dialer.
EDIT: Just tried Takephone (had to rush because I only had 15 minutes or else I just bough a THREE DOLLAR DIALER.) I like it a lot at first, as I did most other dialer apps. But you can't edit the contacts really, and though it links to the facebook pictures, it doesn't link to facebook. The stock dialer, you click on the name, and you get birthday, facebook, phone number, websites, etc...
It also brough back some duplicates that were linked in the stock app. If I have a "Jessie" in my phone book, and her name is "Jesi" on Facebook, I can link them so I have all of the info in one place. Takephone didn't recognize that link for all of my contacts, which is annoying. I'm very anal about having detailed information about all of my contacts.
I think I'm starting to realize there isn't a dialer app that can beat stock droid x froyo.

My favourite dialer by far!
stock meant the new droidx dialer that came with this new update. they included a predictive dialer finally.
I think dialerone is the only other dialer that actually has the features dialers need, (again, still can't believe anyone would want Youlu without * and # keys and it doesn't even sync with facebook pictures) but it just seems like the exact same thing as the stock dialer.

The only time you would ever need to press * or # is when you're already in a call, presumably in one of those voice-guided menus. And when that is the case, dialerone or youlu's dial pad are not given access, but the stock Android dialer's dial pad.

Only jumping in here because I downloaded Youlu yesterday and was looking for more information. As has been said, it didn't have the * and # keys, but this morning it said 'update available' and lo and behold they've appeared! Not tested them out but I'll assume they work ....
My reason for going for Youlu over the stock people app on a Desire HD was that the people app would not just show a contacts address completely (unless the whole thing would fit on that one small line). Now some people will think that's no big deal but I use the phone as an address book and when you want to send someone a card (Xmas just gone!!) you just want a reminder of the address. What I don't want to happen by default and with no way of changing it, is to have a mapping application lauched. With Youlu you get to see the complete address and only then do you get a mapping application launched (launches Google maps on my Desire HD even after the update that means that the people app launches HTC's Locations).
I still think there's a gap for a good contact app for Android!

Going through these posts, I find 2 dialers that seem really nice. One is the Youlu and the other is the Ray Dialer.
The Youlu works really well. I only wish it had a darker theme to match the default GingerBread black for the Nexus S.
I liked the Ray Dialer a lil more, but it lacked the option of going to the favorites, contacts & log. Yes, the log appears, by default, but liked the option of those Phone/contact/log/favorites/.
What I liked about Ray Dialer is that when I type a name / partial number and then choose the name, it shows me the list of all numbers that the contact has. It also allows me to send and sms or email or whatever I choose. Basically it takes me to the default contacts.
Youlu too shows me all the numbers, but it does not show me if the number is a home, office or mobile number. Also, it does not show me options to do anything other than call.

search for Hide it Pro in the market
what does putting a dot in front of it do?
It hides it. The folder can't be accessed from the gallery app, and it's hidden in the file manager until you check "show hidden files".
This also works in Windows and Ubuntu (Ubuntu = CTRL + H)

shady SMS
it overrides all the sms system while letting everything like it should be ....
but it create a secret contact list and text or call from the people in that list get intercepted by shadysms .... call still go through though ... but the call history will not show it!
you can access your secret SMS from your hidden contact list by dialing "123" on the dialer =)
there is no icon of this app... can only be access by dialing "123" or whatever you set to after....
best app to keep your girlfriend
I tried Shady but I ended up going with My Calculator. Its actually called My Private Messages but everywhere (from the Market to your downloaded app list) it is reffered to as My Calculator as to not attract any wandering eyes. The app is nothing fancy from a UI perspective, but as far as keeping incoming and outgoing texts from others, this thing rocks.
It is a calculator that functions as a normal calculator until you type in your passcode followed by "+,=". It then takes you to a hidden inbox where messages from your selected contacts will land when they text you. You will know you have received a new text when a notification of your choice pops up in your status bar. I use the default one which reads something like, "A wireless network was found".
If you are looking for simple, tried, and true with out anything flashy, check this thing out.
One addition I would say would be useful is the ability to send all messages from unknown senders who arnt on your contact list to the hidden messages box, that way if you ever get a random text it would go straight there. Or has this already been done.
Does anyone use a Photo/Video vault that leaves the files it hides in basically the same location?
My external SD is bigger than my internal one. HideIt Pro would be just the ticket if it didn't insist on transferring my videos from the external to the internal SD when it hides them.
Encryption is preferable but not necessary. I just don't want one like GalleryLock that basically just changes the directory/file extension without even altering the filename.
I may have to go back to using my old two-app combo of Photo Vault & Video Vault, but I hate their UIs.

A capable dialer / contacts app needed!! Please help!

Hello,
I am desperately looking for a dialer / contacts app, which has the following features:
- Display the Names of contacts, TOGETHER with their phone numbers.
- Provide a detailed call summary (time of outgoing calls / incoming calls, all calls, SMS counter!)
- Has the ability to allow calls and SMS messages ONLY for certain contacts, so that only a few people can disturb me while I'm sleeping.
I don't care if this will be a paid or a free app.
I'm new to Android, my previous phone had WM 6.1 and I'm really DESPERATE how poor the contacts and dialer of Android are!!! I don't need a 4.3" screen to see the names of my contacts as HUGE banners, but to see as much info as possible on the screen (like the phone numbers of my contacts!!) Nokia had this in 1998 !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot for all your replies and I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong thread.
i don't know if this will do all that your asking but ex dialer is really good, my friend likes go dialer/contacts. i hope this helps.
Hello,
thank you VERY MUCH for your reply!! I'll give your recommendation a try!!
Meanwhile, I have tested several application and Rocket Dialer is the closest one to my expectations.
I'm using just the contacts app. For dialing/keypad, the original app is OK, I found out that it has at
least counters for outgoing and incoming calls, no SMS counter though.
For blocking calls, I've downloaded Call Blocker, which has a whitelist, this is all I needed. I can put
2 numbers on the white list and disable all other incoming calls.
Thanks again!
Hello,
I've checked this ex Dialer and it's really potatic... Again ONLY names of the contacts and no option to change this.
There is also another program - DW Contacts. This is really a high-end app with a lot of options and highly customizable. I didn't find a way to display all the letters on one side of the screen for faster index search, as Rocket Dialer has it.
So, for me, Rocket Dialer is OK.
Try "Dialer One" by Yermek Zhumagulov. It displays "contacts, TOGETHER with their phone numbers", the way you want. You can have different colors for the contact and the phone nos. Seleting two stand-out colors, I found it very easy to read them against the dark background (selectable). Pretty cool and very fast. I'd been trying many dialers and uninstalled all of them after spending half-an-hour with this one.
Thanks a lot! I have looked at the screenshots on google play. It would do, but I prefer Rocket Dialer. It has many amazing options, together with the black list Thanks anyway! Now I'm searching for a task manager to be able to list all running processes and kill them
